Unemployment rate 10.1 percent, Gallup report, October 7, 2010, Government report Friday will understate

From Gallup October 7, 2010.

“Unemployment, as measured by Gallup without seasonal adjustment, increased to 10.1% in September — up sharply from 9.3% in August and 8.9% in July. Much of this increase came during the second half of the month — the unemployment rate was 9.4% in mid-September — and therefore is unlikely to be picked up in the government’s unemployment report on Friday.
Certain groups continue to fare worse than the national average. For example, 15.8% of Americans aged 18 to 29 and 13.9% of those with no college education were unemployed in September.

The increase in the unemployment rate component of Gallup’s underemployment measure is partially offset by fewer part-time workers, 8.7%, now wanting full-time work, down from 9.3% in August and 9.5% at the end of July.

As a result, underemployment shows a more modest increase to 18.8% in September from 18.6% in August, though it is up from 18.4% in July. Underemployment peaked at 20.4% in April and has yet to fall below 18.3% this year.
Friday’s Unemployment Rate Report Likely to Understate

The government’s final unemployment report before the midterm elections is based on job market conditions around mid-September. Gallup’s modeling of the unemployment rate is consistent with Tuesday’s ADP report of a decline of 39,000 private-sector jobs, and indicates that the government’s national unemployment rate in September will be in the 9.6% to 9.8% range. This is based on Gallup’s mid-September measurements and the continuing decline Gallup is seeing in the U.S. workforce during 2010.

However, Gallup’s monitoring of job market conditions suggests that there was a sharp increase in the unemployment rate during the last couple of weeks of September. It could be that the anticipated slowdown of the overall economy has potential employers even more cautious about hiring. Some of the increase could also be seasonal or temporary.”

Mr. Smith goes to Washington, 2010 elections, People not platitudes, Citizen Wells open thread, October 4, 2010

Mr. Smith goes to Washington, 2010 elections, People not platitudes

I had already generally decided what I was going to write this morning by late afternoon yesterday. Later I discovered that TCM was playing “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” starring Jimmy Stewart. Of course I had to watch it again. Perhaps the movie is a bit sentimental, a bit schmaltzy. Well, I like it and I like what the movie and Jimmy Stewart stand for. I am also reminded of another favorite of mine, “It’s a Wonderful Life” also starring Jimmy Stewart where Stewart speaks of all the everyday people who do the living and the dying.

We often speak in platitudes that involve patriotism, the flag, the US Constitution and lofty ideals, but what does this really mean? Jimmy Stewart, in the movie speaks of being free when his ancestors were not. We certainly should never take our freedom for granted. But it also means justice for all and a level playing field of opportunity. In simple terms it means working together for our common safety and prosperity.

When I began covering the issues surrounding Obama, the 2008 elections and the takeover of this country by un American elements, many people in my life questioned my zeal. I explained to them that I had never experienced or read about anything so radical, so drastic happening in this country before. And when  I say that, I include the American Civil War. Many people I talked to could not understand my motives. Of course, they were not really paying attention. They were lulled into a false sense of security. Many were fooled by a promise of change, a sense of a better world, a better life, not unlike the surreal world that played out for the German people in the early 1930’s.

I was concerned then as I am now that the world that I grew up in, where there were people like “Mr. Smith” who believed in what this country stood for and were willing to sacrifice all to defend it was disappearing. That we were entering a world more like that of “1984” by George Orwell where people are not free to live and think and speak out.

Over the past several years I have been watching the economy falter and our Justice system decline. I have watched the news of the housing market and jobs data go from bad to worse. This has been troubling on the macro level. The big picture. But what does all of this really mean?

Here is where this really hits home. This is why I and so many of you have been fighting to save this country. In my daily life I have watched as those around me have lost faith in the institutions of our country. As they have lost faith in obtaining jobs and in supporting their family and most importantly in the future of this country.

It really hits you in the face in the despair you see in the countenance of a friend, who is fighting depression from struggles on many fronts. The economy is not helping. In the checkout line yesterday at the grocery store, the lady who took my money seemed frazzled. She told me that she was working 3 jobs and about to divorce her husband. God bless her.

It really hits home when you hear of a real tragedy. A lady I know recently lost her son in law. He committed suicide. He was around 40, had 3 children and had been out of work for over a year and a half.

This is what the platitudes are all about. People. People with a common bond to live free, raise their families in a safe environment with hope for the future. This is why we must continue to fight to save this country. That is what it is all about.

The 2010 elections are less than a month away. We must do everything in our power to change Congress.

November 2, 2010, Buh bye congress, Vote jackasses out

We can do it. We must do it.

From Citizen Wells March 23, 2010.

“We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution.”…Abraham Lincoln

Buh

Bye

Congress

Obama and the Democrat controlled congress have won a skirmish or battle. They will  not win the war. Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are liars and hypocrites. We now know that Bart Stupak and many other Democrats in Congress are also liars and hypocrites as well as being un American. They have made it easy to identify who to vote out in November.

Nancy Pelosi may not be voted out anytime soon, but her power as Speaker of the House is coming to an end.

It’s The People’s House, Not Pelosi’s House

“Republicans in Congress have listened to your concerns in the debate over health care.  They’ve fought hard to make the voices of the people who opposed this bill heard in the halls of Washington, D.C.  In fact, by any objective account, they won the debate.   Unfortunately, the only side of the debate that matters to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is her own.
After all her wrong-headed policies and failed promises, we know she isn’t listening to the people’s voice and isn’t doing the People’s business.  It’s her business, her agenda that she fights for – and a radically flawed agenda it is.
Over the last year, Pelosi promised to preside over the most open and transparent government, yet even her own Democrats admit they simply “aren’t transparent;”she promised to create jobs, yet America has lost 3.3 million since the passage of her maligned stimulus bill; she promised to legislate with a spirit of bipartisanship, yet Democrats say “they have been explicitly told not to work with Republicans.”  Now, despite overwhelming opposition from the American people, she’s forced her health care bill through the House Chamber, after calling opponents of government-run health care “un-American.”
This is exactly why, in the few hours since Madam Speaker passed her government-run health care bill, Americans have donated more than $600,000 (far exceeding our original goal of $402010) to fire Speaker Pelosi and help Republicans regain the majority in 2010 to reverse the damage she has done.”

Missouri voters reject Obamacare, Over 70 percent, Proposition C, Citizen Wells open thread, August 4, 2010

Missouri voters reject Obamacare, Over 70 percent, Proposition C

From Fox News Kansas City Missouri August 3, 2010.

“Missouri Voters Approve Measure to Ban Mandated Health Insurance”

“The nation is watching Missouri on Tuesday night, as voters approved a proposal that asks voters to ban federally-mandated health insurance.

Proposition C would also disallow punishments for not buying health insurance, and prohibit the government from forcing citizens and businesses to buy health insurance, which will be required under federal law beginning in 2014.

The measure won with over 70 percent of the vote with 65 percent of all precincts reporting.

It is unclear if the measure would be enforceable, as federal law typically supersedes state law under the U.S. Constitution. But supporters say that the measure would send a message to Democrats in Washington and across the nation.

“I think this is an exciting time for Missourians because we are really the first state to vote on the individual mandate, and I think what happens in Missouri tonight will command headlines around the country for the next few days if not months,” said Prop C supporter Patrick Tuohey of Missourians for Health Care Freedom.”

2010 commitment and beyond, 2010 elections beginning not end, Citizen Wells open thread, July 30, 2010

2010 commitment and beyond, 2010 elections beginning not end

Phil, from The Right Side of Life, and I have been in regular contact for several years. He has done a great job of covering eligibility lawsuits and other topics. He has a new article up about commitment.

“The question: Do you really want change? As in, honest-to-goodness change towards freedom and liberty for individual rights?

To be perfectly honest, through the end of 2009 and the first part of 2010, while I have supported the proposition of the Tea Party movement, I questioned its ability (and presently still do) to truly effect change in the body politic. Granted, when the likes of Senator Arlen Specter got “primaried” in Pennsylvania’s voting (there have been other poignant examples; this just happens to be the key point I could think of at the moment), I began to realize that this Tea Party thing truly meant business and wasn’t a huge fad; but can it keep it up?”

“Are you really ready to make that kind of commitment to America? It’s not just about one election; after all, modern liberalism in all of its forms has been building the welfare/nanny state over the past several decades. You do realize that it’s going to take more than one election to turn things back towards individual freedom and liberty for the American society, yes?”
“Oh, you thought that politics and religion were mutually exclusive? Then you’ll have to ask yourself why the American founding fathers decided to invoke the Creator in the Declaration of Independence.”

“Please realize that this year’s election is but one step on the journey of a thousand miles. And those with whom we disagree are not going to go away silently into the proverbial night. They are going to fight at least as strongly against those who believe in individual freedom and liberty as we (hopefully) will be fighting towards that end.

Are you willing to make that kind of commitment beyond 2010?”

Judge Susan Bolton may enjoin Arizona Law in part, SB 1070, Section by section, Citizen Wells open thread, July 24, 2010

Judge Susan Bolton may enjoin Arizona Law in part, SB 1070, Section by section

From The Phoenix New Times July 23, 2010.

“In a day filled with protests, arrests, legal arguments, an appearance by the governor, and at least one certified neo-Nazi, the most significant developments in the SB 1070 saga happened within the Sandra Day O’Connor U.S. Courthouse in Phoenix, not without.

There, Judge Susan R. Bolton oversaw two hearings Thursday where the plaintiffs sought to have her enjoin SB 1070, Arizona’s new “papers, please” legislation. But Bolton, without indicating when she would make a decision, signaled that if she enjoins SB 1070, she will do so in part, perhaps gutting significant portions of the law while leaving the remainder ready to go into effect July 29.

Whatever her decision, legal experts anticipate that her ruling will be appealed to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, which would likely put the law on hold.

Although lawyers for the ACLU, MALDEF, and finally the U.S. Department of Justice argued in separate hearings that the law must be taken as a whole, Bolton kept directing them to the specifics of certain provisions.

“You’re not asking me to do that?” Bolton asked ACLU attorney Omar Jadwat at one point in the morning hearing on the ACLU/MALDEF suit about his request that she enjoin 1070 in its entirety.

“Shouldn’t we be talking about it section by section?” she continued. “And talk about what you want me to enjoin?”

She cited the severability clause in the statute, which would allow her to partially enjoin, while leaving the rest of the statute in force.

Jadwat contended that the law’s stated intent, to make “attrition through enforcement” the policy of Arizona, indicated that all parts of SB 1070 were meant to work together toward this goal.

However, Bolton declared that, “I cannot enjoin the [law’s] intent.””

“”Why can’t Arizona be as inhospitable as they wish to [illegal immigrants]?” wondered Bolton at one point.”
“Playing devil’s advocate, Bolton observed that not a day goes by without the news reporting on a drop house being busted by authorities. Didn’t Arizona have a legitimate concern with “public safety” and the “dangerous situation” that harboring illegal aliens causes?”

“Bolton does not have to issue a decision on an injunction before July 29, the date 1070 is scheduled to go into effect, but most observers believed she will.

It’s worth remembering that an injunction would not overturn the law, just place all or part of it on hold until the various lawsuits play themselves out. The question remaining seems to be how much of the law Bolton will allow to go into effect come the 29th.”

Blagojevich trial, Justice Dept, Obama eligibility, World turned upside down, Citizen Wells open thread, July 23, 2010

Blagojevich trial, Justice Dept, Obama eligibility, World turned upside down

We truly do live in a “World Turned Upside Down.”

The ballad  “The world turned upside down” was first published in 1643.

In 1649 after King Charles the First was beheaded, people declared “the world turned upside down.”

It is believed that the British played this tune when they surrendered at Yorktown.

From American Thinker.

“We truly do live in a world upside-down — whether we see it in the world of science, on the airwaves of Britain, or in the streets of America. An inversion has occurred: Ideology takes precedence over facts and lies trump truth. Even religion has undergone a radical change — and Phillips takes a brief foray into the world of “exotic” religions that seem to be proliferating at a rapid clip. But this points out the fundamental cause, as Ms. Phillips sees it, of why the world flipped around.
Judeo-Christian religions, based on the core values of Judaism, have been downgraded in our lives. The precepts that other generations have lived by have been cast aside, or perhaps cast onto the junk heap. These values are what provided a foundation for the scientific method and of rationality. Now they are disparaged by many (church attendance is almost non-existent in England). When that foundation was removed, what moved into the moral vacuum? Feelings and ideology, with a big slug of irrationality.
Paul Johnson, the English historian, wrote a fine epitaph of the final years of the 20th century that also served as a prophecy for how the 21st century would devolve:
One of the keys to understanding the twentieth century is to identify the beneficiaries of the decline in formal religion. The religious impulse — with all the excesses of zealotry and intolerance it can produce — remains powerful, but expresses itself in secular substitutes.
These are the zealots who control much of our world now and who are driving us down very perilous roads. These are the zealots that Melanie Phillips has done a superb job identifying and battling in her superb new book.”
