“North Carolina’s unemployment rate fell for the fourth consecutive month in May to 8.8 percent, but the slight drop was largely due to a shrinking labor force rather than the creation of new jobs, economists said.”…Raleigh News Observer June 21, 2013

We celebrated the birthday of George Orwell last week.

How fitting.

Even though the unemployment data was accurately reported at Citizen Wells this past week it is important to reveal how bad the employment situation is in NC.

The stated unemployment rate was announced as 8.8 percent.

The Raleigh News Observer reported in the first paragraph.

“North Carolina’s unemployment rate fell for the fourth consecutive month in May to 8.8 percent, but the slight drop was largely due to a shrinking labor force rather than the creation of new jobs, economists said.”

http://www.newsobserver.com/2013/06/21/2979886/nc-jobless-rate-falls-slightly.html

The Raleigh News Observer was the only major Newspaper in NC that I found reported the truth.

The labor force participation rate in NC fell .1 percent in May. That fully accounted for the .1 percent drop in the unemployment rate.

It gets worse.

The NC Labor Force Participation Rate dropped 1 percent from January to May 2013.

It gets worse.

The NC Labor Force Participation Rate dropped 3.7 percent since the Democrats took control of both US houses of congress in 2007.

It gets worse.

The NC Employment to population rate dropped 6.1 percent since the Democrats took control of both US houses of congress in 2007.

“Due to the federal sequester legislation, the Mass Layoff Statistics program, funded by the US Department of Labor, has been eliminated. In addition, North Carolina’s Department of Commerce will no longer support the collection and publication of Announced Business Closings and Layoffs effective May 1, 2013. How convenient!

No sign liberals targeted by IRS, US tax investigator, Russell George inspector general for tax administration, June 27, 2013, Associated Press letter

“The past, he reflected, had not merely been altered, it had
actually been destroyed. For how could you establish, even
the most obvious fact when there existed no record outside
your own memory?”…George Orwell, “1984″

From Florida Today June 27, 2013.

“US tax investigator: No sign liberals targeted by IRS”
“A government inspector who detailed the U.S. federal tax agency’s tough treatment of conservative groups says he has no evidence that liberal groups were similarly targeted, according to a letter obtained by The Associated Press on Thursday.

Russell George, the inspector general for tax administration, addressed the letter to a top Democratic lawmaker who has complained that George unfairly focused on tea party and other conservative groups in a report released last month, while omitting mention of liberals.

George’s report became a major scandal for the Obama administration and led to the removal of at least five top officials at the Internal Revenue Service, including former acting Commissioner Steven Miller. It revealed that the IRS targeted conservative groups for extra scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status.

Democrats seem determined to shift the focus to this week’s disclosure that “Progressive” was also on a list of terms used by IRS screeners from 2010 to 2012 to look for applicants with potential problems that would merit close scrutiny.

In a letter obtained Thursday by The Associated Press, George acknowledged that “Progressives” appeared on the list. But he said there was no evidence the IRS set aside progressive groups’ applications for tax-exempt status because they appeared on that list.

George said his investigators have “multiple sources of information corroborating,” including interviews with IRS employees, emails and other documents, that tea party groups’ applications were set aside for close examinations.”

“If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without bloodshed,
If you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly,
You may come to the moment when you will have to fight
with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival.”…Winston Churchill

“A Party member lives from birth to death under the eye of the Thought Police. Even when he is alone he can never be sure that he is alone. Wherever he may be, asleep or awake, working or resting, in his bath or in bed, he can be inspected without warning and without knowing that he is being inspected. Nothing that he does is indifferent. His friendships, his relaxations, his behaviour towards his wife and children, the expression of his face when he is alone, the words he mutters in sleep, even the characteristic movements of his body, are all jealously scrutinized. Not only any actual misdemeanour, but any eccentricity, however small, any change of habits, any nervous mannerism that could possibly be the symptom of an inner struggle, is certain to be detected. He has no freedom of choice in any direction whatever. On the other hand his actions are not regulated by law or by any clearly formulated code of behaviour. In Oceania there is no law. Thoughts and actions which, when detected, mean certain death are not formally forbidden, and the endless purges, arrests, tortures, imprisonments, and vaporizations are not inflicted as punishment for crimes which have actually been committed, but are merely the wiping-out of persons who might perhaps commit a crime at some time in the future.”…George Orwell, “1984”

From The Daily Beast June 25, 2013.

“Greenwald: Snowden’s Files Are Out There if ‘Anything Happens’ to Him”

“Snowden has shared encoded copies of all the documents he took so that they won’t disappear if he does, Glenn Greenwald tells Eli Lake.”

“As the U.S. government presses Moscow to extradite former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden, America’s most wanted leaker has a plan B. The former NSA systems administrator has already given encoded files containing an archive of the secrets he lifted from his old employer to several people. If anything happens to Snowden, the files will be unlocked.

Glenn Greenwald, the Guardian journalist who Snowden first contacted in February, told The Daily Beast on Tuesday that Snowden “has taken extreme precautions to make sure many different people around the world have these archives to insure the stories will inevitably be published.” Greenwald added that the people in possession of these files “cannot access them yet because they are highly encrypted and they do not have the passwords.” But, Greenwald said, “if anything happens at all to Edward Snowden, he told me he has arranged for them to get access to the full archives.”

The fact that Snowden has made digital copies of the documents he accessed while working at the NSA poses a new challenge to the U.S. intelligence community that has scrambled in recent days to recover them and assess the full damage of the breach. Even if U.S. authorities catch up with Snowden and the four classified laptops the Guardian reported he brought with him to Hong Kong the secrets Snowden hopes to expose will still likely be published.

A former U.S. counterintelligence officer following the Snowden saga closely said his contacts inside the U.S. intelligence community “think Snowden has been planning this for years and has stashed files all over the Internet.” This source added, “At this point there is very little anyone can do about this.”

The arrangement to entrust encrypted archives of his files with others also sheds light on a cryptic statement Snowden made on June 17 during a live chat with The Guardian. In the online session he said, “All I can say right now is the U.S. government is not going to be able to cover this up by jailing or murdering me. Truth is coming, and it cannot be stopped.””

Obama climate change initiative, Obama et al play God, Obama placates left for 2014 elections, We need jobs and an honest energy independence strategy

“if they want to build [coal plants], they can, but it will bankrupt them”…Barack Obama

“Because I’m capping greenhouse gases, coal power plants, you know, natural gas, you name it — whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, uh, they would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that money on to consumers.”…Barack Obama

“For all its soaring rhetoric, President Obama’s “jobs speech” last week didn’t demonstrate a lick of insight into why economies grow or how wealth is created. It was merely trademark Obamanomics: using government diktat to move money that’s over here, over there.

Having spent an hour the day before with Ron Liepert, the energy minister from the Canadian province of Alberta, I found it especially disturbing to hear nothing in the speech about reversing the administration’s anti-fossil-fuels agenda. Canada has recovered all the jobs it lost in the 2009 recession, and Alberta’s oil sands are no small part of that. The province is on track to become the world’s second-largest oil producer, after Saudi Arabia, within 10 years. Meanwhile Mr. Obama clings to his subsidies for solar panels and his religious faith in green jobs.”…Wall Street Journal September 12, 2011

When a person does not follow and obey God, they often take on the role themselves.

If you think about it, you will be reminded of people you know or have read about.

Such is the mentality of Barack Obama and his core supporters, the left.

Imagine, the mentality and spiritual void of changing the climate.

Of course this is another repackaging of “climate cooling” and “global warming.”

A more honest, more team like and more productive approach to our energy use, pollution issues and jobs dilemna is to work together, not use Orwellian, dishonest terminology and science, and take a balanced approach to real issues.

Our biggest problem is jobs followed by a need for energy independence.

We need team players not demigods.

An email sent from the Obama camp.

“Friend —

Today, President Obama announced the biggest steps to fight climate change that any president has ever taken — including the first-ever EPA limits on how much carbon pollution existing U.S. power plants can create.

Change can only happen when ordinary people join in and say we’ll do our part.

President Obama is doing his part — will you do yours?

You don’t have to consider yourself an environmentalist to care about this. If you care about leaving our planet in a better place for our kids and grandkids, then you’ve got skin in the game.

So right now, answer President Obama’s question: Say you’ll do your part to fight climate change:

Subject: Today: What I need from you

Friend —

I told Congress in February that if they didn’t take action to fight climate change, then I would.

Today, I announced a plan of action to make good on that promise.

My administration is taking steps to cut carbon pollution, prepare our nation for the unavoidable impact of climate change, and put America’s best and brightest to work to solve this issue on a global scale.

One thing we know is we’ll face a well-organized and well-financed opposition by the special interests that profit from keeping things the way they are — and there are members of Congress who fundamentally deny the science on this issue.

But we cannot stand by any longer.

I need to know you’ll fight alongside me. Say you will.

Over the next few months and years, I’m going to need the millions of OFA supporters who understand that we have a responsibility to future generations to fight climate change to join me, and be a force of change in your communities.

We owe it to our children and grandchildren to take action — and now is the time.

Today, I’m here to tell you I am committed to doing my part.

Say you’ll do yours:

“All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others.”…George Orwell, “Animal Farm”

“And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed
–if all records told the same tale–then the lie passed into
history and became truth. “Who controls the past,” ran the
Party slogan, “controls the future: who controls the present
controls the past.”…George Orwell, “1984″

“History has taught you nothing if you think you can kill ideas. Tyrants have tried to do that before, and the ideas have risen up in their might and destroyed them. You can burn my books and the books of the best minds in Europe, but the ideas in them have seeped through a million channels and will continue to quicken other minds.”…Helen Keller

Today, June 25, 2013, is George Orwell, Eric Blair’s, birthday.

Orwell was the author of “1984”, “Animal Farm” and other books and essays.

From Citizen Wells June 25, 2012.

Big Brother is alive and thriving.

From Citizen Wells June 25, 2011.

One of the highest honors I ever received was when the Post & Email placed the photo of George Orwell in the article they did on the Citizen Wells blog on May 25, 2010. I am also honored to present the following on George Orwell and 1984.

From The Complete works of George Orwell.

“Eric Blair was born in 1903 in Motihari, Bengal, in the then British colony of India, where his father, Richard, worked for the Opium Department of the Civil Service. His mother, Ida, brought him to England at the age of one. He did not see his father again until 1907, when Richard visited England for three months before leaving again until 1912. Eric had an older sister named Marjorie and a younger sister named Avril. With his characteristic humour, he would later describe his family’s background as “lower-upper-middle class.” “

“In 1944 Orwell finished his anti-Stalinist allegory Animal Farm, which was published the following year with great critical and popular success. The royalties from Animal Farm provided Orwell with a comfortable income for the first time in his adult life. From 1945 Orwell was the Observer’s war correspondent and later contributed regularly to the Manchester Evening News. He was a close friend of the Observer’s editor/owner, David Astor and his ideas had a strong influence on Astor’s editorial policies. In 1949 his best-known work, the dystopian Nineteen Eighty-Four, was published. He wrote the novel during his stay on the island of Jura, off the coast of Scotland.”

“During most of his career Orwell was best known for his journalism, both in the British press and in books of reportage such as Homage to Catalonia (describing his experiences during the Spanish Civil War), Down and Out in Paris and London (describing a period of poverty in these cities), and The Road to Wigan Pier (which described the living conditions of poor miners in northern England). According to Newsweek, Orwell “was the finest journalist of his day and the foremost architect of the English essay since Hazlitt.”

Contemporary readers are more often introduced to Orwell as a novelist, particularly through his enormously successful titles Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four. The former is considered an allegory of the corruption of the socialist ideals of the Russian Revolution by Stalinism, and the latter is Orwell’s prophetic vision of the results of totalitarianism. Orwell denied that Animal Farm was a reference to Stalinism. Orwell had returned from Catalonia a staunch anti-Stalinist and anti-Communist, but he remained to the end a man of the left and, in his own words, a ‘democratic socialist’.

Orwell is also known for his insights about the political implications of the use of language. In the essay “Politics and the English Language”, he decries the effects of cliche, bureaucratic euphemism, and academic jargon on literary styles, and ultimately on thought itself. Orwell’s concern over the power of language to shape reality is also reflected in his invention of Newspeak, the official language of the imaginary country of Oceania in his novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. Newspeak is a variant of English in which vocabulary is strictly limited by government fiat. The goal is to make it increasingly difficult to express ideas that contradict the official line – with the final aim of making it impossible even to conceive such ideas. (cf. Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis). A number of words and phrases that Orwell coined in Nineteen Eighty-Four have entered the standard vocabularly, such as “memory hole,” “Big Brother,” “Room 101,” “doublethink,” “thought police,” and “newspeak.” ”

“We control life, Winston, at all its levels. You are imagining that there is something called human nature which will be outraged by what we do and will turn against us. But we create human nature. Men are infinitely malleable.”

THANK GOD FOR THE LIFE OF GEORGE ORWELL.

It is fitting that WND just presented the following:

“EX-SPY CHIEF: OBAMA THRIVES ON ‘DISINFORMATION'”
“The highest-ranking Soviet bloc intelligence official ever to defect to the West, Lt. Gen. Ion Mihai Pacepa is at it again.

A quarter century ago, in his international bestseller “Red Horizons,” Pacepa exposed the massive crimes and corruption of his former boss, Romanian President Nicolae Ceausescu, giving the dictator a nervous breakdown and inspiring him to send assassination squads to the U.S. to find his former spy chief and kill him. They failed. On Christmas Day 1989, Ceausescu was executed by his own people at the end of a trial whose accusations came almost word-for-word out of “Red Horizons.”

After courageously defecting to the United States, which he now proudly calls home, Pacepa became a major asset to the Central Intelligence Agency’s efforts to deal with the “evil empire” of the Soviet Union. The CIA has praised Pacepa’s cooperation for providing “an important and unique contribution to the United States,” and President Ronald Reagan (seen below holding Pacepa’s “Red Horizons”) reportedly referred to it as “my bible for dealing with dictators.””
“In “Disinformation,” Pacepa and Rychlak reveal that the Soviet Union’s immense intelligence apparatus, unlike other nations’ spy establishments, was not primarily focused on spying and gathering intel on other nations. Instead, reveal the authors, the communist bloc intelligence services, including the Russian KGB and the Romanian DIE headed by Pacepa, were much more preoccupied with rewriting history, with manufacturing lies, deception and false documents, with turning one religion against another, with defaming the noblest people and glorifying the worst, and – perhaps most importantly – with planting an endless barrage of false, perverse, anti-American disinformation into the liberal Western news media.”
“By its very nature, a disinformation campaign can work only if the seemingly independent Western press accepts intentionally fabricated lies and presents them to the public as truth. Thus, Pacepa and Rychlak also document how the U.S. “mainstream media’s” enduring sympathy for all things liberal-left has made it vulnerable to – indeed, the prime carrier of – civilization-transforming campaigns of lying, defamation and historical revisionism that turn reality on its head.”

NC May unemployment rate worse than reported by North Carolina newspapers, June 21, 2013 articles, Drop in labor force not stated, 1 percent labor force drop in 4 months

“the Times of the nineteenth of December had published the official forecasts of the output of various classes of consumption goods in the fourth quarter of 1983, which was also the sixth quarter of the Ninth Three-Year Plan. Today’s issue contained a statement of the actual output, from which it appeared that the forecasts were in every instance grossly wrong. Winston’s job was to rectify the original figures by making them agree with the later ones.”…George Orwell, “1984”

To fix a problem you must:

Be aware of the problem.

Understand the problem.

That is why the underreporting and misrepresentation of the unemployment rate in the US and NC must be exposed.

The NC Labor Force Participation Rate dropped 1 percent from January to May 2013.

From Citizen Wells June 23, 2013.

“The Greensboro News Record on Friday June 21, 2013 regurgitated an AP report about the May unemployment rate in NC. The report was misleading and dishonest.

“NC jobless rate falls to 8.8 percent in May”

“North Carolina’s unemployment rate dropped to 8.8 percent in May from April’s revised rate of 8.9 percent, marking the fourth straight month of slow improvement in the measure of economic health for workers, the state Commerce Department said Friday.”

“Now I’m not a rocket scientist, but I can read.

So I went to the NC labor data website and found that the labor force participation rate in NC fell .1 percent in May. That fully accounted for the .1 percent drop in the unemployment rate.

Can’t the folks at the News Record or the AP read?”

From Citizen Wells May 19, 2013.

“The Associated Press has always been a problem. A member “news” organization creates a report and it is regurgitated across the nation & world, in most cases without fact checking.

We have another example recently from the Greensboro News Record.

Is this because the Rhino Times just shut down?

Or because John Coleman, an economics professor at the Duke University Fuqua School of Business was quoted?

From the Greensboro News Record May 17, 2013.

“North Carolina unemployment rate drops 8.9 percent”

“North Carolina’s unemployment rate fell to 8.9 percent in April _ the lowest in the state in four years.

The state’s unemployment rate was 9.2 percent in March.

“This is very encouraging for North Carolina,” said John Coleman, economics professor at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business.”

I decided to check the reporting of the NC unemployment rate for May in other NC newspapers.

The Raleigh News Observer had the most accurate report.

“North Carolina’s unemployment rate fell for the fourth consecutive month in May to 8.8 percent, but the slight drop was largely due to a shrinking labor force rather than the creation of new jobs, economists said.”

Most of the other newspapers that I checked regurgitated the same AP article.
The 1 percent drop in the Labor Force Participation Rate in NC essentially means that the unemployment rate is 9.8 and not 8.8 percent. That also is an increase of .3 from the January 2013 rate of 9.5 percent.

across much of North Carolina began 2013 no differently than they

The Greensboro News Record on Friday June 21, 2013 regurgitated an AP report about the May unemployment rate in NC. The report was misleading and dishonest.

“NC jobless rate falls to 8.8 percent in May”

“North Carolina’s unemployment rate dropped to 8.8 percent in May from April’s revised rate of 8.9 percent, marking the fourth straight month of slow improvement in the measure of economic health for workers, the state Commerce Department said Friday.

“The headline is going to say that unemployment goes down a notch,” said Robert Whaples, chairman of the economics department at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem. “But it’s not really that beautiful of a change from a month ago.”

North Carolina remains stuck with the country’s fifth-highest unemployment rate behind Nevada, Illinois, Mississippi and Rhode Island. The national rate rose from 7.5 percent in April to 7.6 percent in May.

The numbers show the total number of employed in North Carolina rose by about 1,000 people between April and May, while the total number of unemployed workers dropped by nearly 2,500, Whaples said. Equally meaningful is that even as the state’s population continues to grow, the number of people in the labor force _ people who are of working age who have a job or are looking for one _ dropped in May by about 1,400, signaling people are still dropping out and ending their job search, Whaples said.

The number of people employed in North Carolina has increased by more than 37,000 in the past year, but there are still more than 416,000 people listed as unemployed.”

“”That’s the good news. Our employment in this state has not fallen since the beginning of the recession. It hasn’t gotten better. It went down. It came back up. so we’re sort of back where we started,” he said. “The last few months haven’t been much. The last year, it’s been enough to keep up with population growth. But it could be worse.””

Can’t the folks at the News Record or the AP read?

Don’t they care?

Or is this part of an agenda?

And what about Ben Bernanke stating that the US unemployment rate could fall to 6.5 percent in 2014.

That sounds dishonest to me.

Especially when the current US unemployment rate is 11.4 percent based on 2008 labor rates.

And when you use the May 2008 labor force rate for NC the current NC unemployment rate is 11.5 percent.

Don’t take my word for it.

Check it for yourself.
