Justice Department and Obama indictment, Opening statement, Blagojevich Rezko Obama corruption, Evidentiary Proffer, Protecting Obama

“Why did the Illinois Senate Health & Human Services Committee, with Obama as chairman, create and push Bill 1332, “Illinois Health Facilities Planning Act,” early in 2003, which reduced the number of members on the Board from 15 to 9, just prior to rigging by Tony Rezko and Rod Blagojevich?”…Citizen Wells

“I believe I’m more pristine on Rezko than him.”…Rod Blagojevich

U.S. Citizens

V.

U.S. Justice Department,

Barack Hussein Obama

Opening Statement

In a simpler, more sincere world, in a world of justice and fairness envisioned by our founding fathers, I would just ask that the evidentiary proffer be read, a few questions be asked and a grand jury convened to indict Patrick Fitzgerald and Barack Obama. The indictment of Fitzgerald would naturally lead to further indictments in the US Justice Department. This is not the world we live in today. Sadly, we live in an Orwellian world with no regard for the US Constitution and rule of law. A world where the end justifies the means.

We now know for a fact that there has been corruption and bias in the US Justice Department for years. Whistleblowers such as J. Christian Adams, a former Justice Department employee, and long time Democrat, civil rights attorney, Bartle Bull, have corroborated our suspicions. Judges, including Supreme Court Justices, a crucial part of our checks and balances within the Judicial Branch as well as the larger checks and balances of the executive and legislative branches, have acted in a manner that if not conspiratorial, certainly biased or apathetic. And now, one of the chief players in this chicanery, Barack Obama, is in control of Eric Holder, the Attorney General.

A cursory reading of this evidentiary proffer reveals a completed puzzle picture, a large billboard that reads:

  • Barack Obama was enmeshed in the Chicago corruption of Rod Blagojevich and Tony Rezko and was a participant in the rigging of the IL Health Planning Facilities Board. This well planned board rigging, which took place over many months, was a large part of the indictment and trial of Tony Rezko and the early legal charges against Rod Blagojevich.
  • The facts and reference to this rigging have diminished over time in the Justice Department legal documents and prosecution pleadings.
  • The prosecution of Rod Blagojevich has been repeatedly delayed.
  • Why was Tony Rezko, a businessman, prosecuted first instead of Blagojevich, the governor?
  • Why was the first Blagojevich trial so short?
  • Why were neither Tony Rezko or Stuart Levine called as witnesses?
  • Why was Rod Blagojevich arrested after the 2008 election?

The questions go on and on, but the answer is simple.
To protect Barack Obama.

  5. It is obvious from the failed 2010 elections, none of the politicians are even willing to take the basic steps necessary to clean up corruption in Washington because the politicians profit from the corruption in DC.

The mandate of We the People could not have been clearer. We have demanded that BHO’s background be thoroughly investigated. Yet, not one congressman has called for an investigation of whether BHO is constitutionally qualified to be President.

Clearly no political solution by our politicians will be forthcoming from this congress.

It is time for We the People to use the power of the 4th Branch of Government and issue State Grand Jury Indictments of all the politicians who are obstructing justice. Then, and only then, will the politicians take the demands of We the People seriously.

“In my opinion the Republican leadership of the states are caving in to pressure from Republican leaders in Washington DC and the national RNC leadership which is still trying to keep a lid and cone of silence on the complicity of both political parties in the fraudulent 2008 presidential election cycle. They are protecting their anointed one John McCain who also had his natural born Citizenship issues. Who knows, maybe they secretly want to run McCain again as a last minute white knight candidate. Or maybe they want to run Jindall of Louisianna who is also not an NBC. Read this article I wrote about why the RNC is blocking the investigation of Obama as much or more so than the DNC is: The Fix was in for the 2008 Presidential Election. All three political candidates … DNC, RNC, and Socialist Party had issues with the Article II, Section 1, natural born Citizenship status and the coverup was put in place. The Perfect Storm for a Constitutional Crisis:

    http://puzo1.blogspot.com/2010/01/i-believe-fix-was-in-for-2008-election.html

So the short answer is the the Republican leadership does not want to go there because they know if they out Obama … he will out McCain and the RNC complicity in the 2008 cover up and fraudulent election.”

Europe’s energy commissioner Guenther Oettinger dubbed the nuclear disaster an “apocalypse”, saying Tokyo had almost lost control of events at the Fukushima power plant.

“There is talk of an apocalypse and I think the word is particularly well chosen,” he said in remarks to the European Parliament.

The disaster prompted France, Russia and Germany to order immediate reviews of their atomic energy sectors, with Berlin saying it would provisionally shut down seven nuclear reactors for three months pending a safety assessment.

the buying of stocks of idonine is indeed appropriate. It is the obvious thing when there is a risk of over-exposure to radiation.

Right now though, the idonine is most needed by the Japanese who live in the region most affection by the release of radiation… but only if they have been fully exposed.

Soetoro is at some sort of event. He is being filmed. During his speech he was apparently talking about Chicago. He then went into a list of things that he thought was done for him……One of these he said that “Al Capone was killed for him”. Apparently somewhere in his sick little mind he fancies himself as some sort of god. Everybody knows that Al Capone died under house arrest in his Florida home. He was released to this sort of incarceration because the prison system did NOT have the resources necessary to take care of him resultant of his late stage syphilis. I am trying to determine where Soetoro was at when he said this. I would also like to find the video,or if anybody knows about it maybe you can post it here. It will absolutely floor you.

  18. Aussie, but look at this in the comments section:

“As a doctor, I find the surgeon general’s comments utterly irresponsible and potentially dangerous.

Potassium iodide (KI) is not a general purpose treatment for radiation exposure. No one should take potassium iodide without being instructed to do so. Allergic reactions are possible.

Further, there are a limited number of KI tablets available and those tablets should be provided only to those who are most likely to be exposed to highly elevated levels of radiation. Otherwise many who might benefit will not have access to KI while many who are nowhere near being exposed have the tablets.

I’m astounded that surgeon general, especially a Naval doctor, would be so unthinkingly irresponsible as to indicate that everyone in CA should get the tablets. She should be relieved of duty and a replacement found that is responsible, knowledgeable and understands the gravity of the situation. Just digusting.”

    And theres this one:

“How UTTERLY irresponsible. Potassium Iodide is dangerous in its own right, and should not be taken unless there is a clear and present threat of radioactive iodine exposure. (which there isn’t, by the way)

It should not be taken, (or even handled), by those with thyroid problems, and can cause death in those with undiagnosed thyroid conditions.

The incompetency in urging people to buy it at a time when a supply may actually be needed elsewhere in the world is on par with what i have come to expect from this administration.”

If there is a severe blast at the reactor, the radioactive material could spew high into the atmosphere where it can be swept out to sea by the jet stream. Traveling at around 50 mph, the material would take four days to reach the United States.

    Honor First……………
Much of radiological contaminants that are ingested are picked up by the THYROID gland, which is considered to be our body’s vacuum cleaner. Sadly not ALL of the half life products flush themselves out of the body befor they do serious damage to many of our glands and organs. There is and has for many years been solid evidence produced that our IMMUNE systems are often severely effected by IONISING RADIATION. T cells become erratic and begin working overtime. This can produce illnesses like severe psoriasis. Johns Hopkins University has spent a great deal of money and time in researching the T cell angle as it relates to a radiation damaged immune system.. I respectfully invite you to go to their searcheable database and read some of the research results that have been posted. Much can be downloaded, and printed off.
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Hi Old Salt, I think you misunderstood what I was saying. The point I was trying to make, was that even if a radionuclide has a certain physical half life, as it enters the body, the biologic effects kick in, shortening the time of exposure. In otherwords, while CS-137 has a physical half life of 30 years, once it enters the body, the biologic half life is 110 days. They call that the effective half lie.
That is NOT to minimize the damaging effects on the body while it is there.. Cs-137 decays by Beta decay…Outside of the body Beta can be shielded with paper, wood, water (unlike gamma which requires lead shielding)..but if it is inhaled or ingested, it is very penetrative. It also decays to a radioactive Barium which emits gamma radiation. The gamma is more ionizing than beta. As Cesium enters the body, it acts similarly to potassium so it is distributed evenly throughout the body. I am well aware of the ionizing damage to the body. Also, the thyroid (if memory serves me correctly) has the only tissue in the body that absorbs iodine. That is why they try to block the gland with stable iodine before contamination. The three ways to minimize radiation effects is time, distance and shielding. So, they try to prevent absorption of radioactive iodine localizing in the thyroid gland and doing most of the ionizing damage to that one area of the body specifically. After Hiroshima and Nagasaki, those that survived the blast and the immediate deaths of extreme radiation poisoning, years later were developing thyroid cancer as one the most prevalent forms of cancer. (which, by the way is one of the more curable types. Oddly enough I 131 is one of the treatments of choice for thyroid cancer. I have worked with a lot of it. Since I handled so much radiation in the medical setting, I have been involved in an ongoing radiation health survey for many years now. I used to be current with most of that stuff, but have been away from my field for awhile now. Hope this helps.

  45. I am having a difficult time finding updated information out of Japan. However, I did find this article which covers the fire at reactor 4:

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1366670/A-nation-grip-nuclear-panic-Japans-nuclear-disaster-spiral-s-control-amid-warnings-end-apocalypse-.html?ITO=1490

This reactor was not operating when the earthquake hit. The real problem is the rod holding pool that is on the roof.
At the end of the article it states that the fire broke out a second time because the first fire had not been properly extinguished. This fire in this particular causes me to feel a lot of concern. Of all the situations this one is the most dangerous. However, without further details being available it is really difficult to know exactly what is happening.

According to the reports that I have read, the first two reactors that exploded are supposed to be stable. I have seen nothing that contradicts these reports… and yes I discount any of the so called experts that are in any way associated with Greenpeace.

  46. HonorFirst | March 15, 2011 at 10:11 pm |

After Hiroshima and Nagasaki, those that survived the blast and the immediate deaths of extreme radiation poisoning, years later were developing thyroid cancer as one the most prevalent forms of cancer.

    ==================================
Reports are that the radiation released from a nuclear meltdown is hundreds of times greater than the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs. That is the real problem that most people won’t show effects of the radiation poisoning until years later when the get cancer or have children with birth defects.

  47. Jonah | March 15, 2011 at 9:59 pm |

    Hi Jonah,

Good article-thanks! At least it gives some practical information rather than hitting the panic button, as so many other articles are doing; I do not consider ‘Infowars’ a source for anything reputable.

I think we can understand why the workers were evacuated; if the radiation levels are high and/or fluctuating, no one can be there, regardless of their dedication to the job. This scenario, however, leaves the reactors to continue to heat with more damage to the fuel rods if efforts are not maintained to try to cool them.

We heard that helicopters were being considered today however, they can’t get close enough and don’t have the capacity to dump the amount of water needed to cool the fuel. Now, damage to the fuel rods *is not* a meltdown but left unchecked and uncooled yes, it could lead to a meltdown. We’re also concerned about the cooling water ‘boiling’ because as you know, boiling water does tend to evaporate. If that happens, the rods would be exposed to the air with no cooling mechanism, and that’s real trouble.

My boss and the rest of the team were talking about the very thing this article mentions this morning: Boron. That’d stop it BUT, the reactors would be a total loss. He was saying that at this point, ‘to hell with the loss of the reactors. They need to do it!’

I think we’ll all continue to monitor the situation.

  48. Old Salt and Honor First. Thank you for sharing that valuable information.

  49. SueK. Thanks for your valuable perspective.

  50. Aussie | March 15, 2011 at 10:15 pm |

There have been several reports from Nuclear Scientists not a associated with greenpeace that 3 reactors are in meltdown.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1365781/Japan-earthquake-tsunami-All-3-Fukushima-nuclear-plant-reactors-meltdown.html?ITO=1490

  51. taken from link provided by jonah:

Japanese officials told the IAEA that the reactor fire was in a storage pond and that “radioactivity is being released directly into the atmosphere.” Long after the fire was extinguished, a Japanese official said the pool, where used nuclear fuel is kept cool, might be boiling.

“We cannot deny the possibility of water boiling” in the pool, said Hidehiko Nishiyama, an official with the economy ministry, which oversees nuclear safety.

The IAEA’s head, Yukoiya Amano, urged the Japanese government to provide better information to the agency about the situation.

Experts monitoring the troubles at the plant say a lot of the radiation that’s been emitted has apparently come in steam from boiling water — instead of directly from fuel rods, which would be much more dangerous

Kyodo News reports that the plant was unable to pump water into Unit 4 reactor’s storage pool for spent fuel. That reactor had been shut down before the quake for maintenance.

    ==========================================

It appears that they are saying that the radiation release in the steam is a lot less dangerous than if it was released from the fuel rods.

What is of concern to me about reactor no. 4 is that the water is not pumping. This is probably due to the lack of electricity, which is of course essential in keeping the water cooled and flowing.

I am hoping that one of the more reliable news sites, (not Yahoo news) will have more detailed information without the attached hysteria. At the moment the news seems to be very limited, with most of it being out of date.

    No, Leo, I don’t.

    ‘Presumably.’

No one knows for sure what’s happening; they are ‘assuming.’

We need to remember that a ‘partial meltdown’ is entirely different than a ‘total meltdown.’ Three Mile Island partially melted down and you know the result of that: The world didn’t end.

We all need to keep cool heads (especially those in the thick of this) and be very careful about totally believing every piece of info that comes from any source. There’s a lot of conjecture out there and fear mongering but again, let’s choose the information we pay attention to wisely. No sense making a bad situation worse.

Everything we read in newspapers and on the internet isn’t necessarily true in fact, a lot of it is pure bull.

    G’night.

Japan suspends work at nuclear plant because of dangerous conditions

Workers could not continue to douse reactors with water due to the need to withdraw.

YAMAGATA, Japan — Conditions at a stricken nuclear power plant in Japan got so dangerous Wednesday that operations intended to prevent a nuclear meltdown were suspended.

A surge in radiation at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant made conditions for workers there too dangerous for them to remain at the facility, Toronto’s Globe and Mail reports.

The New York Times reports that authorities are particularly worried about pools for spent fuel rods at several reactors at the plant. The rods are radioactive and “potentially as hot and dangerous as the fuel rods inside the reactors,” it states. The No. 4 reactor’s pool has lost some of the water needed to keep the rods stable.

Do you know who from the NRC is en route to Japan? I know the team leader and he’s the best in the business as far as boiling water reactors is concerned.

These folks from the NRC have years of experience and were in place long before Barky was even a blip on the radar.

TOKYO — Japan’s nuclear crisis verged toward catastrophe on Tuesday after an explosion damaged the vessel containing the nuclear core at one reactor and a fire at another spewed large amounts of radioactive material into the air, according to statements from Japanese government and industry officials.

  71. CW, you have me curious as to why you asked for anyone in the Houston area. What gives?

  72. Hillary Clinton, Hillary Clinton’s chances poll, over for Hillary Clinton, poll results

While Japanese officials made no comparisons to past accidents, the release of an unknown quantity of radioactive gases and particles — all signs that the reactor cores were damaged from at least partial melting of fuel — added considerable tension to the effort to cool the reactors.

“It’s way past Three Mile Island already,” said Frank von Hippel, a physicist and professor at Princeton. “The biggest risk now is that the core really melts down and you have a steam explosion.”

While you reincorced at least one of my suspicions. I read a few years back that i131 was being used as a treatment for thyroid cancer. I found this quite interesting. I am hopeful that someday medical science will find a way to keep the radiation from effecting our DNA strand. The US Government has confirmed that 23 forms of cancer are possible resultant of low dose exposures. I have long ago concluded that much of this is dependent upon the state of health of the victim. The USS Bairoko CVE 115 then had a ship’s company in excess of 800 persons. Nearly all had been deployed to scrub down her flight deck which was literally plastered by Cs 137, after the BRAVO test which went incredibly sour. It was calculated to yeild approx 7 megaton. Because of a collection of poor communication, and plain out and out mistakes by weather people the detonation produced over 15 megaton, and the resulting radioactive fallout heavily contaminated several ships which unfortunately were not where they needed to be for a 15 megaton blast. They were on station for a 7 megaton yeild. Interestingly while nearly all the crew members of the USS Bairoko were put to work scrubbing down the flight deck only two eventually succumbed to early deaths. The BRAVO test contaminated over 7000 square miles of the South Pacific Micronesia, Marshall Islands Etc. The US Government still pays for the native Polynesians’ health care. The Bairoko was so heavily plastered that the ship was cold ironed, the crew removed and was towed back to Bremerton, where it became necessary to sandblast the entire ship, down to bare metal and repaint it completely. This reduced the radiation down to acceptable levels. I personally received a level of approx 375 milliroengtens, while investigating various points of the ship for radiation. We had a real hotspot on our after decks. Fortunately the total time was about a 1 hour exposure. I was suited up, but the suits we used would not totally stop gamma. Fortunately we had showers available and we used them quickly. I am now 79 years of age and have no signs of any cancers. But I do have severe psoriasis, and related joint pain. At this point I cannot say for certain that the exposure was the root cause of the wacky T cells.

The level of radiation at the plant surged to 1,000 millisieverts early Wednesday before coming down to 800-600 millisieverts. Still, that was far more than the average

“So the workers cannot carry out even minimal work at the plant now,” Edano said. “Because of the radiation risk, we are on standby.”

Experts say exposure of around 1,000 millisieverts is enough to cause radiation sickness

The staff of Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power plant has been evacuated as a fire broke out in it early Wednesday, and amidst rising fears that will start emitting large amounts of radiation.

  79. I am personally having some doubts that Tepco had any people who were specifically trained in DAMAGE CONTROL. But given the magnitude of the total effect of first the 9.0 earthquake compounded by the tsunami it is doubtful that anybody would have been able to do anything at all to minimise damage. It all seemed like something right out of a horror movie. The best minds on earth can design, and build things that they think are indestructable, but mother nature proves almost everytime that she can destroy ANYTHING that is built by man. Sadly such natural disasters always seem to take a lot of innocent lives. In this case it is even probable that the whole area will not be habitable for many decades perhaps not even then. The islanders of the Marshall islands have NOT YET returned to their original home islands either. The radiation is still there. Though somewhat diminished it is still not down to a safe level. The interim period has been over 50 years.

  80. http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/fukushima-mark-nuclear-reactor-design-caused-ge-scientist/story?id=13141287

Thirty-five years ago, Dale G. Bridenbaugh and two of his colleagues at General Electric resigned from their jobs after becoming increasingly convinced that the nuclear reactor design they were reviewing — the Mark 1 — was so flawed it could lead to a devastating accident.

Questions persisted for decades about the ability of the Mark 1 to handle the immense pressures that would result if the reactor lost cooling power, and today that design is being put to the ultimate test in Japan. Five of the six reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, which has been wracked since Friday’s earthquake with explosions and radiation leaks, are Mark 1s.

“The problems we identified in 1975 were that, in doing the design of the containment, they did not take into account the dynamic loads that could be experienced with a loss of coolant,” Bridenbaugh told ABC News in an interview. “The impact loads the containment would receive by this very rapid release of energy could tear the containment apart and create an uncontrolled release.”

  81. from the Australian ABC news:
    http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/03/16/3165601.htm
It seems that the workers were evacuated for a short period time.

As previously commented, reactor 1 and 2 remain stable. However reactor 3 appears to be damaged in the suppression chamber. This is the most likely explanation for the release of radioactive steam from the plant.

At the same time reactor 4, which was shut down at the time that the earthquake hit appears to be having a few problems with the holding pool that is on the roof of that reactor. It is the one where there have been 2 fires spotted.

All of the problems are associated with being able to keep up the cooling water inside of the reactors. The issue for reactor 3 appears to be damage that was done to the valves during the tsunami.

Once again I reiterate that when the quake struck the 3 operating reactors immediately went into shut down mode. At this point the generators were required to provide the electricity that was supposed to keep the water circulating. However, the generators were placed on land that was too low due to the size of the tsunami. The first failure was the wall that was built which was supposed to protect the plant and the generators. The wall of water from the tsunami crashed through the wall. The next failure was due to the generators being damaged by the tsunami.
When the generators failed the battery operated generators were used. These had a life of 8 hours. New generators were trucked in, but some of the valves in the reactors were damaged.
The lack of circulating water caused the build up of pressure, which in turn caused the first two explosions.
The errors relating to reactor 3 were somewhat different. In this case there was an exposure of the rods for 140 minutes. There was some human error involved with this exposure. The build up of pressure, as well as the explosion appears to have caused a problem with the suppression pool.

On top of this a few days later, there was a fire spotted in the cooling pool for reactor 4. In this case it seems that there was a problem with the level of water in the pool that was cooling the spent rods. It also appears that there was a 2nd fire, which was probably the igniting of the first fire.

  95. Scientists have been warning since 1972 that the GE nuke designs were susceptible to meltdown. Yet bo is promoting GE and giving them our money to build more dangerous reactors in US.

The warnings were stark and issued repeatedly as far back as 1972: If the cooling systems ever failed at a “Mark 1” nuclear reactor, the primary containment vessel surrounding the reactor would probably burst as the fuel rods inside overheated. Dangerous radiation would spew into the environment.

Japan’s nuclear crisis deepens, emperor addresses nation

  97. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp_asiapacific/view/1116886/1/.html

France’s Nuclear Safety Authority said the disaster now equated to a six on the seven-point international scale for nuclear accidents, ranking the crisis second only in gravity to the level-seven Chernobyl disaster in 1986.

But Yukiya Amano, the Japanese chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency, insisted on Tuesday there was no comparison to the Chernobyl crisis, when radiation spewed across Europe.

Aside from the nuclear threat, the full scale of the quake and tsunami disaster was becoming clear as more details emerged of the staggering death and devastation in the worst-hit northeast.

“The number of people killed is increasing day by day and we do not know how many people have fallen victim,” said the emperor, who is held in deep respect by many Japanese.

“I pray for the safety of as many people as possible. People are being forced to evacuate in such severe conditions of bitter cold, with shortages of water and fuel…”

Millions of Japanese have been left without water, electricity, fuel or enough food and hundreds of thousands more are homeless, stoically coping with freezing cold and wet conditions in the northeast.

Aomori governor Shingo Mimura said he desperately needed central government assistance to get hold of oil and relief supplies.

“We cannot possibly get out to rescue survivors nor reconstruct the devastated areas without oil,” he said.

The governor of Fukushima prefecture, home to the crippled nuclear plant, said people were at breaking point.

“The worry and anger of the people of Fukushima has been pushed to the limit,” Yuhei Sato told public broadcaster NHK.

With nerves on edge across the world’s third-biggest economy and beyond, people across Asia have been stripping shelves of essentials for fear of a major emission of radiation from the power plant on the east coast.

TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan put its top priority on Wednesday on efforts to cool down a plutonium-fueled nuclear reactor, attempting at one stage to water-bomb the facility without success amid fears that authorities were running out of options to avert disaster.

The No.3 reactor is the only one of the quake-stricken Fukushima Daiichi plant’s six reactor units to be powered with plutonium, which is far more hazardous to health than uranium, which is used to power the other five reactors.

  101. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20110316/ts_nm/us_japan_quake_nuclear_radiation_1

High radiation levels had stopped a military helicopter from dumping water on the No.3 reactor, local media said. The plant’s owner, Tokyo Electric Power, declined to comment.

On Tuesday, an explosion blew two holes in the wall of a building housing the No.4 reactor unit’s spent-fuel pool, exposing it to the atmosphere.

Tokyo Electric also said it was not sure what was happening at the No.2 reactor, which saw a sudden drop in pressure.

The company said this might indicate it was being cooled or it could also be an ominous sign that there was a hole in the core container…

“We cannot with certainty say whether or not the core container is airtight,” the company official said.

‘They’ve lost control’: French claim Japan is hiding full scale of nuclear disaster as emergency teams desperately fire water cannon at reactors from long range

Fears of ‘an apocalypse’ were raised by European officials as radiation levels soared. In another attack, French Industry Minister Eric Besson said: ‘Let’s not beat about the bush. They have visibly lost the essential of control (of the situation). That is our analysis, in any case, it’s not what they are saying.’
In a sign of mounting panic, Cabinet Secretary Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano has already warned that the long-range cooling efforts may not work.

He said: ‘It’s not so simple that everything will be resolved by pouring in water. We are trying to avoid creating other problems.’

‘This is a slow-moving nightmare,’ said Dr Thomas Neff, a physicist and uranium-industry analyst at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The biggest concerns centre around the four over-heating reactors, and in particular radioactive steam pouring out of the plutonium-fuelled reactor number three which exploded on Monday.

Plutonium is far more hazardous to health than uranium, which is used to power the other five reactors on the site.

“Unfortunately, the situation is developing under the worst scenario,” Sergei Kiriyenko, who presides over the bulk of the former Soviet Union’s military and civilian nuclear facilities, told Reuters.

Last night Col. Ralph Peters was on Bill O’Reilly’s show, talking about Libya. Peters thinks we should act on behalf of the rebels there, but he expressed skepticism that President Obama will ever do anything. “Obama loves the idea of being President,” Peters said, “but he can’t make a decision.”
I think there is a lot of truth to that, even in domestic policy, where Obama has passively deferred to Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi on all legislative matters. One can debate whether action is appropriate in Libya or not, but Peters is certainly right when it comes to foreign policy–it is a safe bet that Obama will do nothing, because doing something would require a decision.

March 16 (Bloomberg) — The European Union’s energy chief said Japan’s crippled Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear power plant risks provoking a “major disaster.”

“The site is effectively out of control,” EU Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger told a European Parliament committee today in Brussels. “In the coming hours, there could be further catastrophic events.”

mid escalating fears of a catastrophe at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in northern Japan, China became the first nation to begin evacuating its citizens from the country, saying the “seriousness and uncertainty” of the damaged reactors caused it to be “very concerned” about the safety of its nationals. Foreign companies, too, have begun flying nonessential expatriate staff out of the capital, Tokyo. But other countries, including the U.S. and Canada, have adopted a wait-and-see attitude before ordering costly and logistically challenging evacuations, only advising their citizens at home to avoid travel to Japan.

While protests and civil wars rage in Libya and Bahrain, Obama is keeping himself busy by videotaping his NCAA tournament picks, hitting the golf course for the 61st time in his presidency, and partying with lawmakers during a Chicago Bulls vs. Charlotte Bobcats game.

While Japan begs the United States for help to rescue the dire situation at Fukushima, Obama seems more concerned about dressing up nicely to please the media elite at the annual Gridiron Dinner.

Even as the planet faces the threat of a “new Chernobyl on steroids,” Obama has chosen to prioritize a speech about “Women’s History Month,” a White House get-together on “bullying” and a meeting with the Chicago Blackhawks instead of offering any kind of leadership.

But forget Japan, it’s not as if Obama hasn’t got any matters to attend to on the home front, with gas prices surging as a result of an oil spike driven by turmoil in the middle east, as well as a massive budget crisis, not to mention the perilous state of the US dollar and the stuttering economy.

“But the fun stuff won’t end anytime soon,” writes veteran White House reporter Keith Koffler, who accuses the President of succumbing to “childish distractions” while the world is afire. “On Thursday, the Taoiseach of Ireland will be in town to help the president celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. And then Friday it’s off to Brazil for the start of a three-country Latin American tour.

Lest we forget that during the course of the devastating BP oil spill crisis, Obama took no less than three vacations, disappearing from public view at the very height of the drama when Americans were desperate for a leader.

Nothing against left handers but it is fitting that the musbro marxist is a leftie.

  134. One of the most dangerous factors in the entire nuclear event is HOW LONG IT CONTINUES. The longer it continues to emit even low level radiation , the greater is the liklihood of the nuclear occlusion becoming so immense that the entire Northern Japan will no longer be habitable. If any heavy rain occurs during this event,it will bring down with it a lot of elements that have half lives of over 2000 years. If it permeates the soil then it will require a skimming off of the top layer of soil, which proved to be such a monstrous task after Hiroshima.and Nagasaki.bombs were detonated. If nothing is done then very much like the bottom of the lagoon at Bikini atoll the long term radioactive elements will permeate to unimagineable depths in the soil. The bottom of the lagoon at Bikini Atoll is STILL quite ….HOT. It was tested again last year, and found to have diminished only slightly. But we must also temper this with the knowledge that SUCCESSIVE tests were executed at Bikini and Eniwetok over a lot of years, which has directly contributed to the extended duration of the radiation at the bottom of the Bikini lagoon. This is why I say that the longer this goes on the greater, and more PERMANENT will be the damage to the entire northern portion of Japan. Permanent damage could eventually extend in an outward radius of up to 50 miles. This of course is subject to variants in the prevailing weather patterns. I seriously doubt that the US will see any dangerous level of fallout. We might eventually see an increase in our atmospheric radiation level, but in my own personal opinion it would not be anything that would be life threatening. In fact if our normal atmospheric radiation even gets to 15 milliroentgen, it would surprise me. Just my opinion everyone. But once again I hasten to suggest that if you are concernesd then by all means purchase a good quality Geiger-Fuller counter, and learn how to use it. Then learn what to do if you should ever become contaminated. We live in a ongoing serial threat of nuclear injury, from any number of possible sources, which includes the MANIACAL ISLAMIC JIHADISTS among us. So I would suggest to everyone that he/she obtain as much understanding, and knowledge as you can about survival of nuclear disaster, or attack. It is SURVIVEABLE. Knowledge is your greatest asset in such quarters. Learn it well! You don’t have to be a Nuclear Physicist you only need to learn SURVIVAL.

    Hi Zach,

    Interesting article-thanks for posting.

The scientific community has been kicking earthquake prediction around for years. If, let’s say, an 8.7 was predicted to hit L.A. on Friday. Then what? The general consensus is that sure, it’d be nice to know, but how in heaven’s name are you gonna evacuate L.A. and surrounding areas in 36 hours? Even if you could do it, where would you send them and what kind of emergency effort could you possibly mount to move millions of people during a very narrow window of time?

Do you shelter in place with your (already purchased) supplies, or do you clog up the interstates like residents fleeing south Florida in advance of a hurricane?

    What do you do?

The jury’s still out on this one.

    On all 10 toes, indy.

I deal with Pilgrim, Seabrook and Vermont Yankee every day. Entergy (the utility) does a very good job with Pilgrim and samples are collected for water, soil, wild vegetation, seafood, fish, crops and milk surrounding the plant.

Vermont Yankee has had a continuing issue with tritium and I understand that Entergy is trying to sell the facility.

Seabrook sampling is ramping up again, but they’ve been doing a good job thus far.

I think we need to keep in mind that our situation here is completely different than Japan’s. And that’s a very good thing.

I’m not getting any (more) gray hair with our nuclear setup here….

  165. http://www.boston.com/news/world/asia/articles/2011/03/16/warning_was_issued_in_70s_on_ge_designed_reactors/
Warning was issued in ’70s on GE-designed reactors

NEW YORK — The warnings were stark and issued repeatedly as far back as 1972: If the cooling systems ever failed at a Mark 1 nuclear reactor, the primary containment vessel surrounding the reactor would probably burst as the fuel rods inside overheated. Dangerous radiation would spew into the environment.

Now, with one Mark 1 containment vessel damaged at the embattled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant and other vessels there under severe strain, the weaknesses of the design — developed in the 1960s by General Electric — could be contributing to the unfolding catastrophe in Japan.

Obama’s energy plan relies heavily on nuclear power to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions harmful to the climate as well as to reduce dependence on imported oil. The president proposed tripling federal loan guarantees to $54.5 billion to help build new reactors in the 2012 budget plan he sent to Congress.

  168. Sue, that’s good to hear and it’s great to have someone who works in the industry to keep us better informed.

The part of the article that makes me wonder is this: “but Pilgrim Watch, a local nonprofit activist group, has opposed the Pilgrim relicensing at every turn, arguing that the plant is at the end of its safety widow. It also argues that Pilgrim is riddled with design flaws and defective parts and has been subject to lax safety oversight.”

I guess that one could read this and discount the activist group as being an unreliable source of info due to an extremist agenda. I’m wondering if you could give further insight into their claims.

Finally, though the odds are very small, there is the chance for earthquake in the area. I think the last major quake around these parts was in 1755 off Cape Ann. It’s probably more likely that I will win the lottery but it’s still something that’s crossed my mind. Do you know if this is an issue that is even considered with regard to Pilgrim?

  169. http://www.boston.com/news/world/asia/articles/2011/03/13/nuclear_industry_expects_scrutiny_after_leaks_reactor_blast/

US Representative Edward Markey of Massachusetts said yesterday that the nuclear problems in Japan “could very easily occur here,’’ noting that 23 US nuclear power plants — including Pilgrim and Vermont Yankee — have the same type of containment design.

Markey, a longtime critic of the nuclear industry, said the United States should place a moratorium on locating new nuclear reactors in seismically active areas until there is a comprehensive analysis of their earthquake and tsunami resiliency, emergency response, and evacuation plans.

I am getting frustrated with journalists who are peddling a certain stance. It got ridiculous over here when our clueless PM gave a presser because some Aussie rescue workers had a bit of radioactive material on their boots. It was an overblown situation.

  175. Hi Old Salt, I am sorry for the physical ailments you are suffering with. I was not aware of the psoriasis connection to radiation exposure. As more and more research goes on with the long term side effects, who knows what they will find. As you so correctly stated before, there is no safe low-level of radiation exposure…the prudent point is to minimize as best we can. Once again, I want to thank you for your service to our country. I was wondering, if you can connect the problems to the radiation, would you be eligible for service connected disability. If so, that might help at least defray some of costs incurred. Just a thought.

This is just more nonsense from the scaremongers.

I am surprised to learn that the official toll of the dead and missing is just over the 10,000 mark.

There will certainly be no deaths attributed to the small releases of radiation to date – just like in Chernobyl where the real toll was very low.

CARNEY, WH Press Secretary: “Well, it is clearly a crisis. There is clearly –”

TAPPER: “– what is specifically going on?”

CARNEY: “Again, I am standing here at the White House, I think you have reporters in Japan, you have reporters including ones here that could get the technical detailed information on what we know from the NRC, from the Department of Energy –”

“It’s up to the media, not the government?” Tapper asked in response to Carney dismissing his question.

“There will certainly be no deaths attributed to the small releases of radiation to date.”

    ====================

    Aussie,

Could you please explain how you arrived at your conclusions that “The reactor is not harmed” “The reactor is quite safe” ” “My understanding is that the radiation levels are still very low” ???

Pardon me, but your conclusions don’t seem to match up with reality, Aussie.

  183. I come from a country that has coal powered coal stations. Where I grew up, in Victoria we had the LaTrobe Valley, which included the power station at Yallourn (sp – hey over time I have forgotten!!). Recently the watermelons have been attacking these coal power fire stations. There is plenty of coal in the LaTrobe valley.

My husband grew up in the Hunter Valley in New South Wales. This is a coal mining area.
There are vast coal deposits in Australia. At the same time Australia has a vast supply of uranium.

The electricity needs of a nation can be best served by a mixture of resources: coal, nuclear, gas etc. Of these resources wind is the most expensive, solar is not really proven to provide much, thermonuclear is kinda dangerous to tap, and that leaves nuclear and coal power stations as being the most efficient in producing electricity.

The coal mining accidents have cost a lot of lives in the United States, Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere. One of the most recent disasters was at Pike River NZ where 29 miners lost their lives and remain entombed in the mine. It is always sad to hear about these mining disasters.

There is one other form of generating electricity – this is hydropwer. Here in Australia we have the Snowy River hydroelectric scheme. I know that you have hydroelectricity in New York at Niagara Falls (I have seen the power substation that has been built there).

I believe that all of these resources should be utilised. The situation in Japan has damaged the possibility of Australia moving towards the building of nuclear power in the near future.

Despite what has been claimed by the scaremongers, the nuclear reactors did not fail because of the earthquake. Their systems did shut down as soon as the quake hit. This was good news. The metal shells of the reactors were not damaged because of the earthquakes.

However, there were not enough contingency plans in place to counter the effect of a massive tsunami which was experienced along the Japanese coast. In terms of lives lost, they are still counting – it is more than 3000 and expected to rise to 10000 which seems low to me (compared to the numbers due to the earthquake and tsunami in Aceh). Who knows how far it will rise, because it is still unknown how many were on the missing trains.

The crisis at the nuclear reactors has come about because of the loss of the emergency generators due to the damage done by the tsunami. The back-up battery generators provided 8 hours of time to keep the water pumping. When these ran out the problems began.

It has been the loss and damage of the pumps that has caused most of the problems. The first two explosions appear to have been due to the release of hydrogen. There was minimal radioactivity after the first two explosions. However, that was not the case after the 3rd explosion or after the fire.

The difference betwen Chernobyl and Fukushima appears to be the fact that the reactors at Fukushima had shut down, and another difference is the fact that Fukushima is water based whereas Chernobyl used carbon (which was spewed into the air when the reactor went into melt down).

There is no nuclear blizzard as has been claimed. Yes there is radiation but the levels are still relatively low if I am reading the information correctly.

If the water canon is deployed, and they get the electrity attached again, then the pumps will be able to do their work and get the water flowing again.

The exposure of the rods to the air will have caused deterioration and some melting of the rods, but whether or not there will be the big melt down is debatable at this point in time.

Yup, indy…I’m right in your back yard 🙂

Do you know who ‘Pilgrim Watch’ is? It’s one woman. My boss knows her. While it’s nice that there are ‘watchdogs’ out there, she has a voice in the local paper and she’s in the loop regarding all testing, sampling, and goings-on at Pilgrim. While I do understand her concern, it’s really unwarranted and just like some are doing with the Japan tragedy, hit the panic button for no reason at all.

Every nuclear facility has its own ‘groups’ and every structure ever built has flaws. Even though we have a series of aging nuclear power plants in the U.S., most are safe and operating well; those that aren’t are not re-licensed, and decommissioned.

I can tell you that I talked to the engineers at Pilgrim yesterday and while they’re certainly watching events in Japan, there’s no concern here at all. These are some of the best structural, mechanical and nuclear engineers I’ve met in my 25+ years in the sciences.

Earthquakes herel yes, they’re possible. As you may know, we get a few minor quakes each year, most of them centered in the White Mountains in NH. Believe it or not, we’re actually in a *moderate* earthquake zone and we have the Clinton-Newbury fault running through Chelmsford and out to the Atlantic. It’s currently dormant, and there is no mechanism to jolt it to life right now.

What we need to realize, indy, is that this area was formed by a glacier 14,000 years ago. Most of New England was under **2 miles of ice!** When that glacier retreated, Cape Cod and the harbor islands were formed. We’re built on a rock called ‘basalt’ which formed our bedrock via ancient volcanoes hundreds of thousands of years ago. Now, volcano ‘waves’ travel through the basalt much differently than they do in CA or Japan; their subsurface makeup is much different.

Also, we’re not on a tectonic plate boundary; Japan is at the intersection of *4* tectonic plates and CA is at the junction of two, so when the plates move laterally or dive beneath each other, they get rocked!

Do we have the potential for a good-sized quake? Sure. Do I lose sleep over it? Nah.

  196. Aussie | March 16, 2011 at 4:43 pm |

    Hi Aussie,

Trouble getting info all around however, I’m thinking that they want to update when they actually have something concrete to share. Not sure if no news is good news, but I do know that they’re working feverishly over there to try to get a handle on it. I understand that the new power lines are nearing completion so if that’s the case, let’s hope it’s not too little, too late.

This is a tough situation because unlike a beam falling to the floor in a building, they can’t get where they need to be to see what’s actually happening inside those reactors. Conjecture is the order of the day and they can only give a best guess as to what’s occurring.

So, please don’t feel as though you’re out of the loop; not much info going anywhere at this point.

    We wait.

  206. WASHINGTON – Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Wednesday she does not want to stay in her job if President Barack Obama wins a second term in 2012.

The nation’s top diplomat also firmly said she neither has plans to mount another White House bid nor interest in other posts, such as vice president or defense secretary.

Clinton, visiting Cairo, was asked whether she would stay on in a second Obama term. She also was asked if she would like the jobs of president, vice president or defense secretary. She offered single word responses to each: “No.”

Speculation about Clinton’s future is always high and she has been mentioned as a possible successor to Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who has told Obama he is stepping down. In an interview with CNN, Clinton made clear she has no interest in running the Pentagon or repeating her 2008 presidential run.

“You know, I had a wonderful experience running and I am very proud of the support I had and very grateful for the opportunity, but I’m going to be, you know, moving on,” Clinton said.

“I am doing what I want to do right now and I have no intention or any idea even of running again. I’m going to do the best I can at this job for the next two years,” she said.

Clinton and Obama competed in 2008 for the Democratic presidential nomination. Obama bested her, won the White House and then named his one-time rival his top diplomat. Clinton immediately became one of the highest profile members of Obama’s Cabinet. She has kept a busy international schedule and has been mentioned as a possibly candidate in 2016.

“There isn’t anything that I can imagine doing after this that would be as demanding, as challenging or rewarding,” Clinton said.

We have a similar situation in Australia. The dormant volcanoes are towards the centre of Australia. We have lots of earth tremors and big earthquakes such as the one at Newcastle are rare.

One thing to note is that the shallow earthquake in Christchurch that did all of the damage and caused such a big loss of life, and the shallow earthquake in Newcastle had some similarities. One of the similarities has to do with the town being built upon the bed of sand. I do not fully understand the situation but I remember quite clearly that the sand had something to do with the severity of the Newcastle quake.

However, where I grew up in Melbourne, we were on a fault line (the Flinders I think) and there was a tremor that I experienced :).

    News & Developments

•3 reactors have suffered partial meltdowns.
•These three reactors also suffered hydrogen gas explosions
•A fourth unit has a nuclear waste storage site on fire (which can in principle release more radiation than in a standard reactor core).
•Almost all workers, except for 50, have been evacuated. Once all the workers are evacuated, full scale melting is inevitable.
•Unit 2 actually had 100% of its core fully exposed, for about 2 hours. Worse, cracks seem to have formed in the containment vessel, which may be the source of the very high radiation levels.
•Unit 3 uses MOX fuel, which contains some deadly plutonium, one of the most dangerous substances on earth. The utility keeps saying that things are stable, only to see things worsen. This “stability” is the stability of hanging by your fingernails.
If I had the ear of the Prime Minister, I would recommend the “Chernobyl Option.”

•Put the Japanese Air Force on alert
•Assemble a huge fleet of helicopters. Put shielding underneath them.
•Accumulate enough sand, boric acid, and concrete to smother these reactors, to entomb them forever.
This is what the Soviets did in 1986, calling out the Red Air Force and sandbagging the reactor with over 5,000 tons of concrete and sand.

No, CW did not ban us. We are on a self-imposed ban because we throw up all over our computers every time we come to this blog lately.

Apparently JS, was banned – that is a GOOD THING. But that only solves half the problem.

We had this exact same problem during the height of the Gulf Oil Spill. The same hyperbole, same hysteria, and same handwringing. “You know who” was wrong then and he’s wrong now. He adds no information or analysis or expertise of his own. He just surfs for the most outrageous tabloid muckraking “sensationalist” stuff he can find and posts it over and over and over and over and over.

Just like JS who shot herself in the foot credibility-wise with chasing after the RAP nitwits, “you know who” totally lost credibility over his fear mongering during the Gulf Oil Crisis. I doubt if CW will ban him just for being a “never let a crisis go to waste” jackass, but you and other smart people can just know that you see thru this charade.

BTW – you all know that Obama is not really for Nuclear Power, right? It’s all a feint. A sleight of hand. A misdirection. His goal seems to be to shut down ALL good energy sources so that the US can suck teat on the Moslem/Jihad/Caliphate nipple. He will end up being the “good cop” while his minions and the EPA and the Greenpeace and Econutsie crowd will all kill any chance at clean Nuclear Energy. We The People are being “played”. And certain people here, like “you know who” are sucked right into that whirlpool – just where Obama wants him. Sad.

In the meantime – Listen to Aussie and SueK and other long-term denizens here who seem to make sense and who’s work feels like objective reporting. People who are doing good and honest reporting don’t have to substitute quantity (repetition) for quality!

Long before Japan’s nuclear crisis or even the 1979 Three Mile Island accident, U.S. regulators had strong reservations about the design of boiling water reactors and considered banning such units over fears about their vulnerability to radioactive leaks, documents show. An industry study also noted that the reactors had less ability to withstand earthquakes than other models.

In the early 1970s, just as a number of reactors were about to be licensed, Stephen Hanauer, a senior member of the Atomic Energy Commission staff, suggested banning “pressure suppression” methods to contain radiation in the event of a meltdown — methods built into General Electric’s Mark I and Mark II containment designs as well as Westinghouse’s ice condenser design. The advice was considered and disregarded.

This design has been criticized by nuclear experts and Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff for decades as being susceptible to explosion and containment failure.

Coincidentally, also on Friday, President Obama made a statement supporting nuclear power as a “clean energy source” which would “secure America’s energy future”.

Is nuclear power a good idea? Previous nuclear accidents (Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, etc) caused many to fear nuclear power. And, with good reason. Nuclear technology is potentially very dangerous, producing highly radioactive waste and can lead to nuclear weapons proliferation. Nuclear power is “clean” only if you define “clean” as “low carbon emissions”. The output from a nuclear plant smokestack is clean (water vapor), but that’s not the only result of nuclear power. What about the radioactive waste? What about the risk of a nuclear plants going into “unchartered territory” as the ones in Japan are doing today?

But safety issues have come under scrutiny as workers in Japan try to fend off a nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, whose reactors were designed by General Electric in the 1960s. Over the years, some experts have pointed out flaws in two critical components unique to GE’s design: the placement of spent fuel rods above the reactor and the strength of the reactor’s containment vessel. These issues, some experts worry, could now be creating problems for the Japanese.

  252. http://www.lutins.org/nukes.html#power

    Power Plants
    3 January 1961
The world’s first nuclear-related fatalities occurred following a reactor explosion at the National Reactor Testing Station in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Three technicians, were killed, with radioactivity “largely confined” (words of John A. McCone, Director of the Atomic Energy Commission) to the reactor building. The men were killed as they moved fuel rods in a “routine” preparation for the reactor start-up. One technician was blown to the ceiling of the containment dome and impaled on a control rod. His body remained there until it was taken down six days later. The men were so heavily exposed to radiation that their hands had to be buried separately with other radioactive waste, and their bodies were interred in lead coffins. Another incident three weeks later (on 25 January) resulted in a release of radiation into the atmosphere.
    24 July 1964
Robert Peabody, 37, died at the United Nuclear Corp. fuel facility in Charlestown, Rhode Island, when liquid uranium he was pouring went critical, starting a reaction that exposed him to a lethal dose of radiation.

    19 November 1971
The water storage space at the Northern States Power Company’s reactor in Monticello, Minnesota filled to capacity and spilled over, dumping about 50,000 gallons of radioactive waste water into the Mississippi River. Some was taken into the St. Paul water system.

    March 1972
Senator Mike Gravel of Alaska submitted to the Congressional Record facts surrounding a routine check in a nuclear power plant which indicated abnormal radioactivity in the building’s water system. Radioactivity was confirmed in the plant drinking fountain. Apparently there was an inappropriate cross-connection between a 3,000 gallon radioactive tank and the water system.

    27 July 1972
Two workers at the Surry Unit 2 facility in Virginia were fatally scalded after a routine valve adjustment led to a steam release in a gap in a vent line. [See also 9 December 1986]

    28 May 1974
The Atomic Energy Commission reported that 861 “abnormal events” had occurred in 1973 in the nation’s 42 operative nuclear power plants. Twelve involved the release of radioactivity “above permissible levels.”

    22 March 1975
A technician checking for air leaks with a lighted candle caused $100 million in damage when insulation caught fire at the Browns Ferry reactor in Decatur, Alabama. The fire burned out electrical controls, lowering the cooling water to dangerous levels, before the plant could be shut down.

    28 March 1979
A major accident at the Three Mile Island nuclear plant near Middletown, Pennsylvania. At 4:00 a.m. a series of human and mechanical failures nearly triggered a nuclear disaster. By 8:00 a.m., after cooling water was lost and temperatures soared above 5,000 degrees, the top portion of the reactor’s 150-ton core melted. Contaminated coolant water escaped into a nearby building, releasing radioactive gasses, leading as many as 200,000 people to flee the region. Despite claims by the nuclear industry that “no one died at Three Mile Island,” a study by Dr. Ernest J. Sternglass, professor of radiation physics at the University of Pittsburgh, showed that the accident led to a minimum of 430 infant deaths.

    1981
The Critical Mass Energy Project of Public Citizen, Inc. reported that there were 4,060 mishaps and 140 serious events at nuclear power plants in 1981, up from 3,804 mishaps and 104 serious events the previous year.

    11 February 1981
An Auxiliary Unit Operator, working his first day on the new job without proper training, inadvertently opened a valve which led to the contamination of eight men by 110,000 gallons of radioactive coolant sprayed into the containment building of the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Sequoyah I plant in Tennessee.

    July 1981
A flood of low-level radioactive wastewater in the sub-basement at Nine Mile Point’s Unit 1 (in New York state) caused approximately 150 55-gallon drums of high-level waste to overturn, some of which released their highly radioactive contents. Some 50,000 gallons of low-level radioactive water were subsequently dumped into Lake Ontario to make room for the cleanup. The discharge was reported to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, but the sub-basement contamination was not. A report leaked to the press 8 years later resulted in a study which found that high levels of radiation persisted in the still flooded facility.

    1982
The Critical Mass Energy Project of Public Citizen, Inc. reported that 84,322 power plant workers were exposed to radiation in 1982, up from 82,183 the previous year.

    25 January 1982
A steam generator pipe broke at the Rochester Gas & Electric Company’s Ginna plant near Rochester, New York. Fifteen thousand gallons of radioactive coolant spilled onto the plant floor, and small amounts of radioactive steam escaped into the air.

    15-16 January 1983
Nearly 208,000 gallons of water with low-level radioactive contamination was accidentally dumped into the Tennesee River at the Browns Ferry power plant.

    25 February 1983
A catastrophe at the Salem 1 reactor in New Jersey was averted by just 90 seconds when the plant was shut down manually, following the failure of automatic shutdown systems to act properly. The same automatic systems had failed to respond in an incident three days before, and other problems plagued this plant as well, such as a 3,000 gallon leak of radioactive water in June 1981 at the Salem 2 reactor, a 23,000 gallon leak of “mildly” radioactive water (which splashed onto 16 workers) in February 1982, and radioactive gas leaks in March 1981 and September 1982 from Salem 1.

    9 December 1986
A feedwater pipe ruptured at the Surry Unit 2 facility in Virginia, causing 8 workers to be scalded by a release of hot water and steam. Four of the workers later died from their injuries. In addition, water from the sprinkler systems caused a malfunction of the security system, preventing personnel from entering the facility. This was the second time that an incident at the Surry 2 unit resulted in fatal injuries due to scalding [see also 27 July 1972].

    1988
It was reported that there were 2,810 accidents in U.S. commercial nuclear power plants in 1987, down slightly from the 2,836 accidents reported in 1986, according to a report issued by the Critical Mass Energy Project of Public Citizen, Inc.

    28 May 1993
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission released a warning to the operators of 34 nuclear reactors around the country that the instruments used to measure levels of water in the reactor could give false readings during routine shutdowns and fail to detect important leaks. The problem was first bought to light by an engineer at Northeast Utilities in Connecticut who had been harassed for raising safety questions. The flawed instruments at boiling-water reactors designed by General Electric utilize pipes which were prone to being blocked by gas bubbles; a failure to detect falling water levels could have resulted, potentially leading to a meltdown.

    15 February 2000
New York’s Indian Point II power plant vented a small amount of radioactive steam when a an aging steam generator ruptured. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission initially reported that no radioactive material was released, but later changed their report to say that there was a leak, but not of a sufficient amount to threaten public safety.

    6 March 2002
Workers discovered a foot-long cavity eaten into the reactor vessel head at the Davis-Besse nuclear plant in Ohio. Borated water had corroded the metal to a 3/16 inch stainless steel liner which held back over 80,000 gallons of highly pressurized radioactive water. In April 2005 the Nuclear Regulatory Commission proposed fining plant owner First Energy 5.4 million dollars for their failure to uncover the problem sooner (similar problems plaguing other plants were already known within the industry), and also proposed banning System Engineer Andrew Siemaszko from working in the industry for five years due to his falsifying reactor vessel logs. As of this writing the fine and suspension were under appeal.

    Nov 2005
High tritium levels, the result of leaking pipes, were discovered to have contaminated groundwater immediately adjacent to the Braidwood Generating Station in Braceville, Illinois.

  254. Aussie | March 16, 2011 at 8:42 pm

    Hi Aussie,

Ya know, not much wakes me up, but a 6.0 may very well do that…

Right, a shallow-focus quake (< 80 km deep) will certainly do all the damage. The 'substrate' is important, as I mentioned to indy.

Many areas that get completely blown apart in a quake are built on sandy material, or some other loose material, not bedrock. There is a phenomenon called 'liquefaction' and it's an incredible thing to witness. This occurs when the sandy material below the surface receives the earthquake waves and actually behaves like a liquid. If you take a small child's toy, put it in a container of sand (or other loose material) shake it back and forth and up and down (to simulate the 'P' and 'S' earthquake waves), watch what happens to the toy. Imagine this on a larger scale; buildings literally sink and topple over.

Unfortunately, many areas aroud the world are built on this type of substrate (especially islands) so this is why you see the damage you do when a large magnitude quake hits.

Gotta go check a subsurface map of Australia, now :).

Still no news from Japan….just speculation.

  255. http://www.prisonplanet.com/u-s-government-cannot-be-trusted-on-radiation-plume.html

The same people telling us that the levels are miniscule and the radiation “harmless,” are from the same organizations who assured us that the Chernobyl disaster only killed 9,000 people, when in reality it exposed 550 million Europeans, and 150 to 230 million others in the Northern Hemisphere to notable contamination and led to nearly a million deaths.

  256. http://www.prisonplanet.com/u-s-government-cannot-be-trusted-on-radiation-plume.html

The history surrounding both 3 Mile Island and Chernobyl give us a clear warning that governments and “trusted” authorities habitually lie about the threat posed by radiation as part of their supposed effort to “prevent mass panic” amongst the population.

The false claim that there were no “deaths or long-term health effects connected to the accident,” at the Three Mile Island nuclear plant, which is again being parroted by the corporate media, is based on deceptive assurances made at the time by authorities that levels of radiation emitted were harmless.

In reality, cancer rates in children and infants living Dauphin County, where Three Mile Island is located, are significantly higher than the national average.

Huge, obsolete reactors assure disasters like Japan’s.

If anything is to blame for what’s happening in Japan, it’s the arrogant decision to build 55 huge, dangerous reactors at sea level in a seismically active region, where they could be destroyed by tsunamis. These sites, chosen because of the plants’ need for cooling water, effectively guaranteed that a major nuclear accident would occur in the long run.

And let’s not forget that 23 of America’s approximately 100 nuclear plants use boiling-water reactors identical to the troubled Japanese installations.

All our plans for inherently unsafe, 1,000-megawatt nuclear reactors should be immediately scrapped, and they should be replaced with a Manhattan Project-style effort to build 100-megawatt mini-reactors. These would safely and cheaply take up the slack in our energy production when we finally abandon fossil fuels – along with the terrifying nuclear mammoths we can neither afford nor control.

..US nuclear plants located near geologic faults

LOS ANGELES – Two years before an immense coastal earthquake plunged Japan into a nuclear crisis, a geologic fault was discovered about a half-mile from a California seaside reactor — alarming regulators who say not enough has been done to gauge the threat to the nation’s most populous state.

The situation of the Diablo Canyon plant is not unique. Across the country, a spider’s web of faults in the Earth’s crust raises questions about earthquakes and safety at aging nuclear plants, amplified by horrific images from Japan, where nuclear reactors were crippled by a tsunami caused by a 9-magnitude quake.

The Indian Point Energy Center, for example, lies near a fault line 35 miles north of Manhattan; on Wednesday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered a safety review at the plant.

To University of Southern California professor Naj Meshkati, an expert on earthquakes and nuclear power plants, the risk is not the massive plant structures but the reliability of backup systems that failed in the Japanese tsunami.

While such a large quake and killer wave is unlikely in California, the plants face similar dangers in backup equipment.

“If someone says this cannot happen here, they should really … take a very hard look at some of their assumptions,” Meshkati said.

  267. Morning, All,

This web site was sent to me from my headquarters and it seems to be one of the most accurate and objective out there; it’s a far cry from the sites with ‘experts’ promoting the ‘OMG mentality’ and hype.

The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) is completely independent and not affiliated with any gub’mint agency:

The graphic on the right is a good explanation of the ‘guts’ of the Fukushima reactors.

Do you know NEI and the work they do? Do you?

I’m sure your PrisonPlanet, Alex Jones, Yahoo, and (P)MSNBC are THE sources that have all the correct info.

    Right?

All you do is post panic information and have no clue what’s real and what isn’t. Delusions, delusions.

    Pathetic.

Are you employed by this blog?

  273. Even bo’s and GE’s nuke PIMP are now admitting that the GE designed reactors are in danger of catastrophic meltdown.

    http://www.nytimes.com/cwire/2011/03/17/17climatewire-fukushima-crisis-worsens-as-us-warns-of-a-lar-9187.html

The top U.S. nuclear regulator, Gregory Jaczko, gave a dire assessment of Japan’s nuclear crisis yesterday, saying that lethal radiation from uncovered spent fuel above one of the reactors could force emergency workers to abandon their fight to prevent meltdowns of damaged reactor cores at the Fukushima Daiichi plant.

His comments to a House committee were disputed but not explicitly denied by Japanese authorities, exposing an apparently major communications issue between the United States and Japan. If Jaczko’s information was correct, the plant’s owner, Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) may have withheld information about the gravity of the crisis. If not, then a senior U.S. official may have wrongly inflamed fears in a country wracked by tragedy following last Friday’s earthquake and tsunami.

  274. GRRRReat stuff SueK! Thanks.

Also, after living through several So Ca earthquakes, I became fascinated with liquefaction many years ago. Thanks for addressing it. I know the PE’s there must know seismic engineering unlike some other States.

  275. bo is sending his nuke PIMPS out to spread DISINFORMATION in a futile effort to try and distance himself from the Tragedy in Japan but the FACT is that bo’s Cohort GE designed the TEPCO reactors that are in CATASTROPHIC MELTDOWN and despite pleas by the Japanese Government for help in stopping the meltdown of the GE designed reactors, bo and GE have done NOTHING to help.

  277. Despite Warnings, Obama Administration Does Nothing

Even the nuclear crisis enveloping Japan isn’t enough to wake up an indifferent Obama Administration.
The massive earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan on Friday also created a crisis at the country’s nuclear power plants. Damage at the sites was extensive, and repair work was impeded by at least one massive explosion. Radioactive gas leaks have been reported, with radiation 1,000 times higher than normal levels. In response, the Japanese government has imposed a massive, military-led evacuation, clearing people away from at least two of the plants.

Despite the tragedy unfolding in Japan, the United States remains unprepared. The country does not have enough of even the most basic countermeasures, such as potassium iodide or KI, which would be needed to protect the general population from a nuclear emergency.

  278. http://www.prisonplanet.com/harmless-chernobyl-radiation-killed-nearly-one-million-people.html

The authors said, “For the past 23 years, it has been clear that there is a danger greater than nuclear weapons concealed within nuclear power. Emissions from this one reactor exceeded a hundred-fold the radioactive contamination of the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.”

“No citizen of any country can be assured that he or she can be protected from radioactive contamination. One nuclear reactor can pollute half the globe,” they said. “Chernobyl fallout covers the entire Northern Hemisphere.”

  279. This is a very serious situation. We need to draw from ALL available resources to determine what is actually happening over there. It serves no purpose to say that “those guys are stooges for this or these guys are stooges for that”.

Gather information from all available sources, do contemplate their agenda but don’t completely discount their reporting, and cross reference the information with other sources.

Those that do Not listen to other perspectives are as stupid as those on the left that discount everything that FOX says (even with all evidence that FOX may be right )..

Also, Just because a presented theory may contradict your perspective it does not mean that the other person is personally against you or may agree with you on a multitude of other subjects.

Without Nuke power energy prices would be un affordable to the average working family. If you want to get rid of Nukes than you have to replace with something else. And the only way to build enough of these in the private sector is to eliminate the EPA , and back down Air Permit regulations, and that ain’t going to happen.

The US-made reactors at Fukushima are coming under close scrutiny as experts point to flaws in their original design and the lack of a safety feature that the nuclear industry is only now starting to address.

Five of the six reactors at Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant are so-called Mark 1 boiling water reactor (BWR) models, developed by General Electric in the 1960s and installed in Japan in the 1970s.

  303. http://www.newstrackindia.com/newsdetails/210328

New York, Mar. 16 (ANI): The nuclear reactor design at Japan’s Fukushima-Daiichi plant has been deemed controversial for more than 35 years.

So much so, that it led to Dale G. Bridenbaugh and two of his colleagues resigning their General Electric (GE) jobs, as they were convinced that the design-the Mark 1 — was so flawed it could lead to a devastating accident.

Japan nuclear crisis: Seven reasons why we should abandon nuclear power

The disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station in Japan underscores – yet again – the need to abandon nuclear power as a panacea for energy independence. Experts may never determine what caused all of the emergency cooling safety systems at Daiichi to fail completely. But they have learned that they are nearly powerless to bring the smoldering units under control. In the meantime, significant amounts of radioactive gas have vented, and partial meltdowns of at least two reactors have occurred. Indeed, nuclear power will never live up to industry promises. As a whole it is ultimately unsafe, an accident waiting to happen, and far more expensive than proponents admit.

  308. http://www.prisonplanet.com/pentagon%e2%80%99s-actions-suggest-nuclear-disaster-is-much-worse-than-feared.html

The Pentagon’s actions regarding the nuclear crisis in Japan reveal that the true scale of the disaster is being withheld from the public.

The US military has begun full scale evacuation of US personnel and citizens within a 50 mile radius of the Fukushima power plant in Japan, a distance that does not tally with the Japanese government’s 12 mile evacuation zone.

The Pentagon has also authorized US military personnel to leave the main Japanese island of Honshu, a further indication that the scale of the crisis is much worse than the Japanese government is admitting to.

The Pentagon is also sending a nine-member team to Japan that specializes in biological and nuclear hazards.

In Washington, Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Gregory Jaczko said at a congressional hearing that all of the water had evaporated from the spent-fuel pool at the No 4 reactor.

However, Japanese officials still contend that there is water in the pool, which contains an estimated 125 tonnes of uranium fuel pellets.

As our report over at Infowars.com details today, the US military has a variety of ways of conducting air sampling missions at any given time in any location without delay.

The idea that the military waited to be asked to asses the situation by Japanese officials is unrealistic at best.

Does the Pentagon have intelligence that it is not sharing with the Japanese government? Or does it simply believe that the Japanese government is not being truthful about the extent of the threat posed by the Fukushima plant?

Either way the public in both the US and Japan are being kept in the dark.

The British government and other international governments, Such as New Zealand’s leaders, have also now advised anyone within 80km of the scene to immediately leave the area.

Yesterday the French government publicly accused the Japanese government of intentionally playing down the crisis. French Industry Minister Eric Besson said: ‘Let’s not beat about the bush. They have visibly lost the essential of control (of the situation). That is our analysis, in any case, it’s not what they are saying.’

British and American Search and Rescue teams are also scheduled to completely pull out of Japan tomorrow, it has been announced.

Barack Obama, who has been busy meeting hockey teams, playing golf and celebrating St Patrick’s Day, is due to make a statement about the situation in Japan at 7.30pm this evening, the White House has confirmed.

However, at least the Swedes can be trusted to know a thing or two about detecting radiation. While the Soviets were furiously engaged in a cover-up of the Chernobyl disaster which occurred on April 26 1986, Swedish workers at the Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant were the first ones to detect the fallout from the accident two days later on April 28.

It was only after the workers failed to find the source of any radioactive leak at their own plant that the true horror of what had happened 1,100 km (680 miles) away in the western Soviet Union began to unravel.

The whole planet is united in hoping that Japanese technicians find some way to restore power and water cooling system to the Fukushima plant before that terrible scenario has any chance of repeating.

The video below shows how far the radiation clouds from Chernobyl spread across Europe, smothering virtually the entire continent within 7 days.

  316. @Sue K

I saw your comments about earthquakes and liquefaction. The last Christchurch earthquake was a real study in liquefaction. As I read the articles on the quake I saw lots of examples of how that works. Oddly enough I do not remember liquefaction being an issue in Newcastle. (Yes I was in Newcastle a few days after the quake).

When the Newcastle earthquake hit we were in Townsville, Qld, and we were in the process of what is known as an uplift of our furniture and effects. In fact at the time it hit, I was on my way to take my cat to the boarding kennels (for cats) so that he could be popped on an aircraft to Canberra. We were due to take off and spend the following week driving back to Canberra. We spent time in Newcastle visiting my husband’s family and we drove through the area that had been damaged. It was nothing when compared to Christchurch.

Also we were in Christchurch for a day last December. There was a lot of evidence of damage from the previous quake but everything looked quite normal. The Cathedral had a wire fence around it, to protect the pedestrians because the building was unsafe.

I do laugh every time I remember my own experience with earth tremors especially when I thought that perhaps the water heater had blown up and had caused the loud noise and rattling of the windows. What is hilarious is that other members of my family did not feel a think whilst I was shaking in bed!! Then there was the fear that the chemistry laboratory at school had blown up but instead it was another tremor – oh well, just hilarious.

  317. Okay, for all the doomsday advocates, here’s one for ya.

    I don’t believe in this but anyway……………………………………………………….
If you add together 9/11/2001 and 3/10/2011….you get………………..

12/21/2012. I had to remind the person that told me this that the Japanese quake happened on 3/11/2011, but they responded it depends on which time zone you are in. So I guess, here’s more play on numbers to freak some out.

  319. @ Cabby,
please be aware that I am totally ignoring the twisting of my words and the taunts plus the stupid questions.

When I first wrote, and based on the earliest information what I said was correct. This applied to the first days when there was the first explosion. In fact I maintain what I stated, that the inner steel building of the first reactor was not damaged from the explosion. Also there was NO DAMAGE from the actual earthquake. The reactors behaved the correct way and all three immediately went into shut down.

After that point the situation has been very fluid, and the reason for the escalation was the loss of the generators, which was due to the height of the water of the tsunami.

The earthquake and the tsunami are two separate events, even though the earthquake started the tsunami. Some people died as a result of the earthquake because rubble fell on top of them, but those deaths were minimal. However, thousands have died as a result of the tsunami that followed. As such I treated the situation at the reactors in Fukushima as damage caused by the tsunami and not from the earthquake, since if the tsunami had not been as severe with such high waters, the generators might have been ok.

Since I wrote my first comments though, much has happened, and even this morning as I read the update from Professor Brook, I am led to revise some of my own thoughts on the severity of the matter. This relates to reactor 4 which is probably the one in most trouble because of the level in the pool of water. I have just noted that Professor Brook mentions that it is probable that the pool lost some water with the shaking of the earthquake.

The loss of water would not have been a problem if they had no problem keeping the pumps working. However, with the generators being knocked out and the electricity to the plant not restored, the situation has become very serious.

In Professor Brook’s opinion the event is more serious than the event at Three Mile Island where there was a partial meltdown. This partial meltdown is due to the exposure of the rods to the air, especially the 140 minute exposure in reactor nr. 2 which in part was due to human error at the time.

New information received suggests that there was rod damage in all three reactors, but this does not mean that the situation is on the same level as Chernobyl. What is now critical is restoring the electricity so that the pumps are working.

    RE: LAKIN, CAO, USURPATION…TREASON!”

    by Debbie St. Jean

    Excerpt:

“One of the complaints against King George III cited in The Declaration of Independence states, “He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.”

“Mar. 17, 2011) — In December of last year, a highly-decorated, 18-year U.S. Army medical doctor was sentenced to six months in prison at Ft. Leavenworth for disobeying orders due to questions surrounding the legitimacy of Barack Hussein Obama to serve as President and Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. military. Lt. Col. Terrence Lakin was denied discovery of any kind regarding Obama’s eligibility to serve, was denigrated, ridiculed and insulted on the stand during his court-martial, and refused an answer to his question which had been asked of his U.S. representatives and Army personnel more than two years prior.

This is the United States of America, where one’s constitutional rights are always expected to be protected. Or is it? What happened in the case of Lakin? Why was he denied his due process, inalienable rights to know whether or not Obama is a “natural born Citizen” and therefore eligible to order him and others into combat, possibly to lose their lives? Lakin was upholding his oath to the U.S. Constitution, but what were Maj. Gen. Hawley-Bowland, Maj. Gen. Matthew Kemkes, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mullen, and Col. Denise Lind doing? By denying Terry Lakin his right to a fair trial which would have included discovery, they violated their oaths to the Constitution and therefore committed treason against it. (snip).

The entire military establishment knows that Obama is not eligible to be president, yet they covered for him and send an innocent man to prison.” (skip).

“So what will We the People do?

Alan Keyes, a former presidential candidate who should have had “standing” in the courts to challenge Obama’s legitimacy, was denied a hearing on the merits of his case, which has now gone to appeal. But why?

If the courts, Congress, state legislators, members of the Electoral College, governors, attorneys general, U.S. attorneys, members of the FBI and Secret Service were doing their jobs, wouldn’t they have looked into Obama’s obscured history before allowing him entry into the White House? And what about the U.S. Supreme Court? Having all sworn an oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution and done nothing about Obama, are they not all guilty of treason?”

Allen said the situation was likely to play out for a long period of time: “These things could go on for months. You could lose all six of the reactors.” If workers are unable to get cooling water into the reactor vessel, as they’re trying to do with helicopters and water cannons, heat from the decaying fuel would boil away any water. If that happens, Allen says, “It’ll melt through it like butter.”

The effect of that would be a “high-pressure melt injection” into the water-filled concrete cavity below the reactor. The sudden injection of the ultrahot contents of the reactor into cold concrete would be “like somebody dropped a bomb, and there’ll be a big cloud of very, very radioactive material above the ground,” Allen said.

If… the radioactive cloud moves toward Tokyo and other cities, the result would be worse than Chernobyl.

The movement to impeach Barack Obama for his crimes and misdemeanors is moving forward, gaining followers from all political persuasions. Americans are fed up with the way our president spends his time picking NCAA brackets while gas prices skyrocket, the national debt multiplies, and unemployment numbers won’t budge. More average Americans are taking action by telling their friends, neighbors, and political leaders impeachment is the solution for our national ills. The Craig (Colorado) Daily Press on Friday printed a model example of citizen activism:

Rush is saying to stay calm. It’s going to be OK. Leo keeps saying “the sky is falling”! To say the least….I find Rush more credible.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — The safety of America’s nuclear reactors is being questioned as Japanese engineers scramble to avert a total meltdown at two of that country’s quake-stricken power plants.

Like in Japan, some of the 104 nuclear reactors in the United States are situated along the ocean — some in earthquake-prone areas.

The reactors are designed to withstand earthquakes, sabotage and other disasters. But the difficulty the Japanese are facing in controlling their plants is raising red flags about the safety of U.S. facilities.

“The tragic events now unfolding in Japan could very easily occur in the United States,” Rep. Ed Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat who sits on the House committee overseeing nuclear power, said in a statement.

Japan nuclear crisis sparks calls for IAEA reform

The Japan nuclear crisis has exposed an industry that lacks sufficient oversight, say some scientists, leading for renewed calls to redefine the mandate of the UN nuclear watchdog so that it can better police nuclear power plants worldwide.

It’s something that Najmedin Meshkati has highlighted for more than two decades. Now, his call to reform the United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to better monitor nuclear power worldwide is getting new attention.

“We need to overhaul IAEA,” says Dr. Meshkati of University of Southern California, Los Angeles, who has visited Chernobyl’s nuclear accident site and studied nuclear plants and emergency responses worldwide, including in Japan.

PARIS – Japan’s nuclear crisis reverberated in atomic power-friendly countries Wednesday, with China saying it would hold off on approving new nuclear plants and French lawmakers questioning top energy executives about the safety of their reactors.

Some governments have put their nuclear future on hold, at least for now, as concerns grow even among pro-nuclear governments about the safety of the 442 reactors operating around the world. Japanese emergency workers are desperately struggling to cool overheating reactors after a series of explosions at a nuclear plant crippled after last week’s earthquake and tsunami.

China’s Cabinet said Wednesday the government will suspend approvals for nuclear power stations to allow for a revision in safety standards. The State Council said it has ordered the relevant departments to conduct safety checks at existing plants and at those under construction.

Clinton’s position was vindicated early Thursday evening when the United Nations Security Council – at the urging of the United States – approved a resolution authorizing “all necessary measures” to protect Libyan civilians, including a no-fly zone. U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice told reporters that such a move could involve direct attacks on pro-Qadhafi forces now bearing down on the rebel stronghold of Benghazi in eastern Libya.

DAVID Cameron risked opening a deep rift with the United States yesterday by criticising President Barack Obama’s lack of leadership on Libya.

The Prime Minister lashed out as Colonel Gaddafi last night issued a 10pm deadline for pro-democracy rebels to clear out of their last stronghold Benghazi. His son Saif boasted that his troops would see to it that “everything will be over in 48 hours”.

As Britain and France demand a United Nations resolution for a no-fly zone over Libya, the PM criticised other countries – including the US – for failing to get behind the plan.

    Link

Where is the president? The world is beset. Moammar Khadafy is moving relentlessly to crush the Libyan revolt that once promised the overthrow of one of the world’s most despicable regimes.

    So where is the president?

Japan may be on the verge of a disaster that dwarfs any we have yet seen. A self-governing nation like the United States needs its leader to take full measure of his position at times of crises when the path forward is no longer clear.

This is not a time for leadership; this is the time for leadership.

    So where is Barack Obama?

The moment demands that he rise to the challenge of showing America and the world that he is taking the reins. How leaders act in times of unanticipated crisis, in which they do not have a formulated game plan and must instead navigate in treacherous waters, defines them.

Obama is defining himself in a way that will destroy him.

Has it come to this again? The president is meeting with his oil spill experts, he crudely tells us, so that he knows “whose ass to kick.” We have become accustomed to his management style — target a scapegoat, assign blame and go on the attack. To win health care legislation, he vilified insurance executives; to escape bankruptcy law for General Motors, he demonized senior lenders; to take the focus from the excesses of government, he castigated business meetings in Las Vegas; and to deflect responsibility for the deepening and lengthening downturn, he blames Wall Street and George W. Bush. But what may make good politics does not make good leadership. And when a crisis is upon us, America wants a leader, not a politician.

  383. http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2011/03/14/karl-rove-3-disturbing-images-obama/

First, there was the president on Libya — dithering, indecisive, unreliable, and weak.

Then there was the on-going budget battle. The failure of Mr. Obama,

Then there were the president’s remarks to members of the National Governors Association on Wisconsin, last month, where he cautioned, “I don’t think it does anybody any good when public employees are denigrated or vilified.”

This was a classic Obama straw man. Who exactly is “vilifying” or “denigrating” whom? The president’s intimation was that it was Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, but Mr. Walker’s tone has been mild, even-tempered, restrained and entirely appropriate.

When Mr. Obama was in the Illinois State Senate, he had the annoying habit of voting “present” on controversial issues he felt might damage his future political ambitions. But at least Mr. Obama showed up then. The president’s refusal now to provide leadership on Libya or the budget and his readiness to score cheap political points with straw man attacks makes his days in the State Senate look like an era of true statesmanship.

  384. http://www.redstate.com/erick/2011/02/02/barack-obamas-egypt-failure-hes-becoming-carter-faster-than-carter-became-carter/

We can however blame Barack Obama for failing to mitigate and control the impact of the collapse.

Like when a demolition team sets about bringing down a crumbling building — and we now know Obama collaborated to help bring down Egypt — the demolition team must make sure the building, as it implodes, does not throw debris and carnage all over the place. If that happens, the demolition team is liable.

Regardless, the worst case scenario remains highly unlikely and this is despite the damage from the melted rods. The indication seems to be that the radiation levels have continued to drop and I hope that this is correct and remains that way.

With nuclear for all intents and purposes frozen in amber — as if it wasn’t already, talk of a ‘renaissance’ notwithstanding — this, combined with the Left’s war on energy that works now places us on the precipice, as well.

However, seldom is one poster so prominent on a blog as FS is here. He not only dominates this forum – that is one aspect – but he is really showing himself to be very questionable as to his true motives for being here.

It is one thing to have a strong opinion about a matter, e.g., antinuclear power, but it is another to push it and shove it relentlessly. Furthermore, to take that position to the extent that he ridicules and puts down anyone who disagrees with him is patently unfair and destructive. It IS a time-waster, that’s for sure. Clinton has made similar “I’m not here forever” comments before – but it was the timing of her remarks to CNN on Wednesday that raised eyebrows, coming at a critical moment in her fierce internal battle to push President Barack Obama to join the fight to liberate Libya from Muammar Qadhafi.

Sure the best and easiest thing to do for any individual is to take no notice and take no action. But we think the responsible thing to do for all of us is to stomp on flaming bags of dog poo when we encounter them..

The few of us flying under the FOS ALERT flag, are probably not enough critical mass to cause this problem to get fixed permanently. But if more of you more frequently expressed your outrage, then that might work.

Radiation levels have declined to safe levels for workers, Japanese government spokesman Yukio Edano said.

    Advertisement: Story continues below
The U.S. military, which is flying unmanned surveillance drones over the 40-year-old power station about 220 kilometres north of Tokyo at Japan’s request, said it is ‘‘cautiously optimistic’’ that the damage to the reactors can be contained.

The risk of a meltdown has lessened after water was dumped on the site, said Thomas Graham, chairman of Lightbridge Corp., a McLean, Va.-based nuclear fuel developer and consultant, said in a Bloomberg Television interview.

‘‘We’re optimistic that we’ll continue to progress in this, and that worst-case scenario will never be encountered,’’ Admiral Robert Willard, head of the U.S. Pacific Command, told reporters by telephone from Hawaii.

The worst-case scenario would be if the effort to keep the cores of the reactors covered were abandoned, he said.

‘‘We believe that that can’t happen, that we must do everything required in order to keep water and cooling affecting these reactors,’’ he said.

  410. FOS Alert | March 17, 2011 at 11:12 pm |

All of your points are being taken to heart. When I saw the attack barrage I was irritated, expecially when, yet again my words were being twsted. Rather than respond to the garbage and the baiting I chose to respond by providing link that give a far better picture of what is happening in Fukushima, especially when the situation has been so very fluid.

The main differences seem to be that I consider that the earthquake and the tsunami are two events rather than a single event. Many of the nuclear experts think the same thing. My reasoning is based upon experience, since not every tremor or quake ends up having a tsunami attached, even when a tsunami warning is given.
It is only by giving the sequence of events that one can see that my earliest statement which was stated to try and quell the rising hysteria regarding the remote possibility of radiation reaching the USA was in fact based upon the earliest of the reports after the first two reactor explosions, and especially the first explosion. These were caused by hydrogen build-up due to the increase in pressure caused by the loss of power to keep the water pumps working.
Yes, there was damage to the outer building, but the steel building was not damaged, and I stand by that statement until someone is able to do more thorough checking. From what I understand reactor 1 has remained stable.

Being a fluid situation meant that things could change rapidly, which is what we witness, with explosion nr. 3 and then the fire and explosion in the 4th reactor.

All of the reactors have been shut down. Three of them, 4, 5&6 had been shut down for servicing. The rods in the holding pool of the 4th reactor were not totally discharged and they were waiting to be used again. It appears that a problem arose because the pumps were not working. However, even in my ignorance I was shocked when that Gary J made the extraordinary claim that the water in pool nr. 4 was gone…holy Moley if that was really true. However, the disturbance within the tank would indicate that the rods had become exposed and that some radiation had escaped, which explains the higher radiation readings after the explosion and fire.
There has been talk of the suppression tank in the nr 2 reactor being damaged but others have contradicted this finding.

The hype that was presented here was not helpful. One of the maps has been totally discredited. The anti-nuclear lobby has been trying to talk this up as if it was another Chernobyl, even though there is no evidence to support such a conclusion. Even worse my PM got on TV to announce that a couple of volunteers had detected radiation on their boots!!! It was hype and she is an outright idiot.

Anyway I have provided some reliable links from people who have dealt with nuclear reactors. Some of them are Navy engineers who dealt with nuclear energy on their subs. They do know the water system. One of my sources is from the University of Adelaide and he seems to be a climate change believer, yet one who believes in clean energy sources such as nuclear, rather than the expensive wind farms.

It really disappoints that you won’t be honest and simply say that you were wrong when you made the EXACT STATEMENTS posted above. All one has to do to see that you are being dishonest when you say you were misquoted is to click on the links to your original posts.

Your statements that “The reactor is not harmed” “The reactor is quite safe” ” “My understanding is that the radiation levels are still very low”
    are obviously FALSE.

At this point it is obvious that your disinformation is willfully dishonest and you have lost all credibility.

‘What can go wrong has gone wrong’

The outcome of the Fukushima catastrophe will not be clear for some time, but if this week’s revelations about the culture of cover-up in the Japanese industry are accurate, the true number of deaths could be understated.

  422. The following article is important for those interested in cutting though all the information/misinformation looking for the ‘truth’. Unfortunately, what the article clearly illustrates is that one cannot rely on those quoting history to quote it accurately. I learned early in my working life that I could believe little to nothing in print and about half of what I actually saw. There’s always missing context and undisclosed agenda.

    From Leo Donofrio, Esq.:

IRLI Got Some ‘Splainin To Do.
Last week, a reader of this blog tipped me off to an incredible misquote of Representative John Bingham which appears in an amicus brief filed with the US Supreme Court by the Immigration Reform Law Institute – aka IRLI – for the Flores-Villar case. Here is that tip in full:

    “Sallyven Says:
    March 9, 2011 at 4:54 PM e
In the Flores-Villar citizenship case currently being decided by SCOTUS, the Immigration Reform Law Institute submitted an amicus brief which included the Bingham quote from the 37 Congressional Globe. On page 34 of the brief, it includes the same section you quoted, indented and appearing to be the complete word-for-word quote, although the critical words: “of parents” are missing. More scrubbing?
    http://www.scotusblog.com/case-files/cases/flores-villar-v-united-states/
    http://www.americanbar.org/content/dam/aba/publishing/preview/publiced_preview_briefs_pdfs_09_10_09_5801_RespondentAmCuIRLI.authcheckd

The comment was in response to articles I wrote – one which argued that the House of Representatives definition of “natural born citizen” requires a person to be born in the US to “parents” who are citizens – and the other highlighting the scrubbing of a Michigan Law Review article by a well known law professor which stated the same, but then was changed after the dual citizen issue began to haunt Obama.

My article concerning Rep. Bingham (aka father of the 14th Amendment) highlighted three statements made on the floor of the House which were not challenged by other Representatives. One of the Bingham quotes from 1862 was this:

“All from other lands, who by the terms of [congressional] laws and a compliance with their provisions become naturalized, are adopted citizens of the United States; all other persons born within the Republic, of parents owing allegiance to no other sovereignty, are natural born citizens. Gentleman can find no exception to this statement touching natural-born citizens except what is said in the Constitution relating to Indians.” (Cong. Globe, 37th, 2nd Sess., 1639 (1862))

But the amicus brief filed by IRLI misquotes Bingham as follows:

The words “of parents” are mysteriously missing from the quote. I held back on posting Sallyven’s comment until today because I wanted to contact IRLI and question them about the error….

  423. http://blogs.forbes.com/williampentland/2011/03/11/risk-of-nuclear-catastrophe-escalates-in-japan-worse-than-chernobyl/

The Institute for Public Accuracy issued the following statement by nuclear expert, Kevin Kamp, about the risk of nuclear disaster in post-Earthquake Japan: “The electrical grid is down. The emergency diesel generators have been damaged. The multi-reactor Fukushima atomic power plant is now relying on battery power, which will only last around eight hours. The danger is, the very thermally hot reactor cores at the plant must be continuously cooled for 24 to 48 hours. Without any electricity, the pumps won’t be able to pump water through the hot reactor cores to cool them. Once electricity is lost, the irradiated nuclear fuel could begin to melt down. If the containment systems fail, a catastrophic radioactivity release to the environment could occur.”

“In addition to the reactor cores, the storage pool for highly radioactive irradiated nuclear fuel is also at risk. The pool cooling water must be continuously circulated. Without circulation, the still thermally hot irradiated nuclear fuel in the storage pools will begin to boil off the cooling water. Within a day or two, the pool’s water could completely boil away. Without cooling water, the irradiated nuclear fuel could spontaneously combust in an exothermic reaction. Since the storage pools are not located within containment, a catastrophic radioactivity release to the environment could occur. Up to 100 percent of the volatile radioactive Cesium-137 content of the pools could go up in flames and smoke, to blow downwind over large distances. Given the large quantity of irradiated nuclear fuel in the pool, the radioactivity release could be worse than the Chernobyl nuclear reactor catastrophe of 25 years ago.”

TOKYO, March 18 (Reuters) – A “Chernobyl solution” may be the last resort for dealing with Japan’s stricken nuclear plant, but burying it in sand and concrete is a messy fix that might leave part of the country as an off-limits radioactive sore for decades.

“It’s just not that easy,” Murray Jennex, a professor at San Diego State University in California, said when asked about the so-called Chernobyl option for dealing with damaged reactors, named after the Ukrainian nuclear plant that exploded in 1986.

“They (reactors) are kind of like a coffee maker. If you leave it on the heat, they boil dry and then they crack,” he said.

“Putting concrete on that wouldn’t help keep your coffee maker safe. But eventually, yes, you could build a concrete shield and be done with it.”

MOX plutonium fuel used in Fukushima’s Unit 3 reactor two million times more deadly than enriched uranium

If even a couple milligrams of MOX were released during this explosion — or if other explosions at the plant inflict any damage on the MOX-filled rods — then the consequences could be exponentially more devastating than the mere leakage of enriched uranium. And since nobody knows for sure exactly which rods have been damaged, and whether or not the situation can actually be contained, it is only a matter of time before the world finds out for sure.

In other words, Americans should do nothing other than listen to their government. Don’t buy potassium iodide pills (even though the U.S. Surgeon General has already urged people to do so), don’t fuel up your automobiles in case you need to evacuate California, don’t store some extra food and water… basically, don’t worry! Of course it is going to kill some people. Only a moron would think otherwise and none of us sane people have ever said otherwise. But so what? It is not the worldwide catastrophe you keep hoping for.

Cars kill people, airplanes kill people, heck, some little kid probably choked to death on a Cheerio someplace in the world today.

The point is that the reactors and safety systems are working pretty well under the circumstances and there is no need for a global panic. And in particular there is no need to stand down any and all Nuclear Energy plans in the USA.

You sound just like Obama wanting to shut down all drilling forever because of an oil well accident. Are you sure you and the Obamaniac aren’t reading off the same teleprompter?

When can we expect the SHAMEFUL “LPH” panic and bare-face fearmongering to begin to subside?

By all indications the Nuclear Reactor problems are headed in the right direction. In a few weeks we will learn that the damage and deaths caused by the reactors is a tiny microscopic pimple compared to the HUGE damage caused by the Earthquake and especially the Tsunami.

Overfocus on the reactors is geared directly and on purpose to destroy Nuclear Energy as a viable resource in our country. Thereby singing Obama’s song that we be slaves to Muslims forever.

  452. this is the updated information from Professor Barry Brook of Adelaide University:

Fukushima March 18 evening update, Barry Brook on the future of nuclear energy

There is a lot of detail in the update, but not a lot of news. I note that he says the radiation levels have fallen at the plant. This is due to the fire trucks continuing to spray water at both reactors 3 & 4 with water being delivered to the spent rod tanks and that has helped to bring down the radiation levels.
The effort to hook up the plants to the cables so that the pumps can be started again in reactors 1 and 2 continues.

This is not a doomsday scenario which is indicated by blogs that are anti-nuclear and indulge in scare mongering of an extreme order.

You got that right. Hey, what’s that on the ground? OMG it’s the sky!!

  456. The alert level has been changed to the same as the Three Mile Island incident.
What this means (without the hype and scaremongering from the anti-nuclear lobby) is that there is danger of radiation for a wider area.

There is NO spewing out of radioactivity. However, there has been releases of radioactivity of small amounts through to some larger amounts that have decreased rapidly. This is not Chernobyl.

Who is in danger? So far it is the workers at the plant who are facing the biggest risks. For other people, where minor amounts of radioactivity are detected, a shower and a change of clothes does the trick.

Yesterday there was no increase in the level of radiation as the battle to control the situation continues. The measures taken have kept the radiation levels low.

Whilst the explosions at the first two reactors to explode were from hydrogen and caused no damage to the steel container, the third explosion was more serious. There are conflicting reports about damage to the suppression chamber. It also appears that the rods at the three working reactors (when the quake hit) were exposed to the air, and that there has been a PARTIAL meltdown.

The word MELTDOWN seems to cause some people to go into a hissy fit. Yes the rods are damaged, and that happened when the pumps failed because the emergency generators were knocked out.

One thing is certain to me, and that is the American Greg J was talking through his backside when he claimed that the spent rod pool in reactor 4 was empty of water. It was not the case.

The good news is that the Government and TEPCO have finally admitted that they have to bury the reactors in concrete as was done at Chenobyl. So hopefully they can contain the radiation before more of it spreads to Tokyo and Los Angeles.

The really scary prospect is that plutonium which is millions of times more deadly than uranian will get into the atmosphere in strong concentrations. No telling how many people will die if that happens.

President Barack Obama has cancelled a public speech he was scheduled to deliver Sunday in a Rio square during his upcoming visit to Brazil, the
    US embassy in Brasilia said.

The speech in the historic plaza known as Cinelandia, in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, “is cancelled,” an embassy spokeswoman told AFP.

Obama instead will deliver remarks at Rio’s Municipal Theatre, the official said, without specifying whether it would be open to the public or exclusively for invited guests.

No explanation for the change of venue was given by the embassy. Brazilian authorities have laid out a heavy security presence for Obama’s two-day visit to South America’s largest nation, and police in Rio had closed numerous streets from midnight Thursday in preparation.

On Thursday, members of an advance US security team were seen inspecting the surroundings of Cinelandia, where anti-US banners could be seen hanging from a road-side fence.

    I agree with your analysis.

  461. What has not been stated above is that a concrete pouring option is not on the cards at this point in time. It was a question that was asked but it is a question that is getting a lot of negative reaction as far as the situation is concerned.

You will find an informed discussion on the subject in the comments field at this blog:

Fukushima March 18 evening update, Barry Brook on the future of nuclear energy

In each of the responses that I have read so far you will see that there is a lot of negativity about the suggestion and is considered as a bad option.

  462. As we see by the failed 2010 elections, none of the politicians are even willing to take the basic steps necessary to clean up corruption in Washington because the politicians profit from the corruption in DC.

The mandate of We the People could not have been clearer. We have demanded that BHO’s background be thoroughly investigated.Clearly no political solution by our politicians will be forthcoming from this congress.

It is time for We the People to use the power of the 4th Branch of Government and issue State Grand Jury Indictments of all the politicians who are obstructing justice. Then, and only then, will the politicians take the demands of We the People seriously.

It should be noted that the situation is not deteriorating and that the radiation detected is at a level not dangerous to human health.

    =============================

It is shameful and despicable beyond the pale that you would stoop so low. This is disinformation of the first order and created explicitly and specifically to discredit Nuclear Energy as a viable and necessary source of energy.

This is a new low EVEN FOR YOU.
