Thanksgiving 2010, Abraham Lincoln proclamation October 3, 1863, heal the wounds of the nation

A Thanksgiving Proclamation from Abraham Lincoln, October 3, 1863.

“By the President of the United States of America.

A Proclamation.

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consiousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the City of Washington, this Third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the Unites States the Eighty-eighth.

By the President: Abraham Lincoln

William H. Seward,
Secretary of State”

“fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.”

Amen

Ron Wyden to block COICA, Oregon senator opposes Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act

From PC World November 19, 2010.

“A U.S. senator has vowed to fight attempts to pass a controversial copyright protection bill that would allow the U.S. government to shut down websites suspected of hosting infringing materials.

Senator Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, said late Thursday that he would seek to block the Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act, or COICA, from passing through the full Senate, unless the legislation is changed. Earlier Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 19-0 to approve the bill and send it to the full Senate.

Wyden called the bill the “wrong medicine” for dealing with online copyright infringement. The bill would allow the U.S. Department of Justice to seek expedited court orders requiring U.S. domain-name registrars to shut down domestic websites suspected of hosting infringing materials. The bill would also allow the DOJ, through court orders, to order U.S. ISPs to redirect customer traffic away from infringing foreign websites.

“Deploying this statute to combat online copyright infringement seems almost like using a bunker-busting cluster bomb, when what you need is a precision-guided missile,” Wyden said during a hearing on digital trade issues. “If you don’t think this thing through carefully, the collateral damage would be American innovation, American jobs, and a secure Internet.”

Wyden’s opposition means the bill is likely dead this year. Individual senators can place holds on legislation, and there are only a few working days left in the congressional session this year. Sponsors of the legislation, including fellow Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont, would have to reintroduce the bill if it doesn’t pass this year.”

“COICA is an example of repeated efforts to fix long-time problems through Internet restrictions, said Ed Black, president and CEO of the Computer and Communications Industry Association, a tech trade group. The Judiciary Committee pushed through the bill without adequate hearings and input from the public, Black said.

“The significance and implications of the legislation I don’t think have been well thought through,” Black said during the hearing on digital trade. “Sadly, it’s an example of what not to do in an important, complicated digital ecosystem.””

I agree with senator Ron Wyden and Ed Black. This bill gives the government too much power and was not well thought out.

For starters, Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont is the sponsor. That should be red flag enough. This is the same Senator Leahy of Vermont who did not reply to my voice message or email when I was in Burlington, VT when I got the video of the Senator Bernie Sanders speech and a brief interview.

And what about these Republican Senator cosponsors?

Lamar Alexander [R-TN]
Thomas Coburn [R-OK]
Lindsey Graham [R-SC]
Charles Grassley [R-IA]
Orrin Hatch [R-UT]
James Inhofe [R-OK]
George Voinovich [R-OH]

More RINO’s? Or are they just not paying attention or listening to the public?

I am not certain if the full text of the bill is available yet. My first 2 attempts to get it failed.

The following summary was written by the Congressional Research Service, a well-respected nonpartisan arm of the Library of Congress. GovTrack did not write and has no control over these summaries.

9/20/2010–Introduced.
Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act – Amends the federal criminal code to authorize the Attorney General (AG) to commence an action for injunctive relief against a domain name used by an Internet site that is “dedicated to infringing activities,” even where such a domain name is not located in the United States. Defines an Internet site that “dedicated to infringing activities” as a site that is: (1) subject to civil forfeiture; (2) designed primarily to offer goods or services in violation of federal copyright law; or (3) selling counterfeit goods. Requires the AG to maintain a public listing of domain names that the Department of Justice (DOJ) determines are dedicated to infringing activities but for which the AG has not filed an action. Allows parties to petition the AG to remove such a domain name from the list and obtain judicial review of the final determination in a civil action.”

Greensboro ranked 2, Most religious city in US, NC, Charlotte Raleigh Durham rank high

I was born and raised in NC. I live in North Carolina now. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have lived here and been surrounded by so many good people. So many people trying to live their lives the right way and care about others. I am forever praising my home state and giving thanks for my parents, teachers and friends from church and everyday life. The following news came as no surprise to me.

From the Charlotte Observer November 11, 2010.

“Magazine ranks Greensboro as #2 most religious city in U.S.”

“A new study by Men’s Health magazine ranked Greensboro number two on the magazine’s list of America’s Most Religious Cities.

Colorado Springs, Colo. topped the list. Three other North Carolina cities ranked high on the list of 100, Charlotte was number nine, Raleigh, 13, and Durham, 14.

Men’s Health said it scoured U.S. Census Bureau data, the yellow pages and other resources to rank America’s holiest hometowns.

Among the criteria was the number of places of worship per capita. In Greensboro they abound.

“There are a lot of choices here in town. It’s a good sign,” said Clarke Martin, executive director of Guilford Interfaith Hospitality Network. “I’m encouraged by it. It did make me think about what’s going on in the rest of the country.”

The magazine looked at the number of religious organizations in each city. Martin’s is one of many in Greensboro and churches are its life blood.

“We have 59 churches that support our network,” he said. “We’re a homeless center for family. Homeless children and their parents are who we minister to.””

“”This is a good community. People like living here,” said Lana Gainey, a Network volunteer and parishioner at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. “If we are members of churches I think our pastors and our ministers reach out to us to help.”

The rankings wouldn’t likely change hearts, but Martin said it looked like Greensboro’s heart already was in the right place.

“It’s good to know in Greensboro that there are indications that God is at work,” he said.”

I have traveled over much of the country. I have found good people everywhere. I have also listened to people making disparaging remarks about the south, the bible belt and those who attend church. It is true that too many attending church are less than perfect. However, the vast majority of those I have been around who have the moral compass, and I don’t mean just protestants, who believe that there is a creator, who believe in the golden rule and who try to live their lives in  a godly manner, have made this a better world, and most definitely, a better state.

God bless NC and America.

Republicans vow to cut spending repeal health care bill, John Boehner, New Speaker of the House

From the Chicago Tribune November 5, 2010.

“Victorious at the polls, congressional Republicans asserted their newfound political strength on Thursday, vowing to seek a quick $100 billion in federal spending cuts and force repeated votes on the repeal of President Barack Obama’s prized health care overhaul.

At the White Houses, Obama said his administration was ready to work across party lines in a fresh attempt to “focus on the economy and jobs” as well as attack waste in government. In a show of bipartisanship, he invited top lawmakers to the White House at mid-month, and the nation’s newly elected governors two weeks later.

Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio, in line to become the new speaker of the House, brushed aside talk that the No. 1 GOP goal was to make sure Obama is defeated at the polls in 2012. “That’s Senator McConnell’s statement and his opinion,” he told ABC, referring to the party’s leader in the Senate and adding that his own goals included cutting spending and creating jobs.”

“Many House Republicans campaigned on a platform of cutting government spending to levels in effect in 2008, before enactment of an economic stimulus bill and other increases that Democrats passed. Rep. Jerry Lewis of California, the senior Republican on the House Appropriations Committee, notified Democrats during the day that GOP lawmakers will try and implement the cuts when Congress considers the spending bill needed to keep most agencies running for the next eight months. The estimated savings total $100 billion.

“The unmistakable message sent by the American people on Tuesday is that they are justifiably angry at Washington. They want Congress to cut spending,” wrote Lewis, who faces an internal challenge in his attempt to become chairman of the panel next year.

At a news conference on Wednesday, the president signaled he was ready to jettison his campaign-long insistence that tax cuts be extended for earners at incomes up to $250,000 but be allowed to expire for higher-income people.”

New Congress action plan, Work together, Create job creation environment, Fix health care, Citizen Wells open thread, November 4, 2010

New Congress action plan, Work together, Create job creation environment, Fix health care

As many of you know, I am not in love with either political party or party politics. Choosing to vote for the Republican Party candidates in 2010 was clearly the lesser of evils, a real no brainer. That being said, any candidate involved in the recent elections should realize that the American public is fed up with status quo from both sides. Come the next election cycle, any candidate, Republican or Democrat who has not listened to their constituents, who has not done the right things for America, who has not upheld the US Constitution, will be booted out of office.

Here is a simple emergency action plan, not a complete agenda.

  • Restore confidence in the business world. Define as soon as possible what the taxes will be and assure business that there will be no hidden health care surprises. This will begin to allow them to consider hiring and expansion.
  • Assure the country that the Tax & Spend Bill, aka Health Care Bill that was rammed down the throats of Americans will be deactivated or disarmed in it’s current state. It has too many negative connotations.
  • At the same time assure the country and reach out to the Democrat Party to achieve real health care reform. Maintain our present quality and then adjust the system beginning with a few goals such as portability and opening up health insurance across state lines.
  • Begin phasing in a series of incentives to small businesses in energy technology and practical residential applications such as passive solar and small scale wind energy. I happen to be knowledgeable in this area.
  • Restore confidence in Congress and our institutions. Begin acting more like statesmen and less like politicians.
  • Lastly, and I believe most important, acknowledge and pledge a new allegiance to the US Constitution as the supreme law of the land.

Obviously I have more to say, but will reserve those comments for the appropriate time.

We have put a bandaid on this country, now is the time to heal it.

God bless and preserve America.

Obama India trip or move, Estimated 50 jumbo jets, Cost $ 200 million per day?, Timing suspect

From The Post & Email November 3, 2010.
“Is Obama moving the White House to India? 9

AND WHERE IS HE GETTING THE $200,000,000 A DAY THAT IT WILL COST?”

“Despite yesterday’s election, it is now blatantly obvious that Obama & Co neither cares about the United States of America nor its people. Today, the US tyrant–along with an estimated 50 jumbo jets full of his 3,000- person entourage–will fly Air Force One (followed by the second AF One and Marine One copters) to Mumbai, India where he and his merry minions will take over the entire Taj Mahal and other hotels. The now fully-visible-to-the-entire-world hedonist and “Neroistic” monarch Obama will spend at least $200 Millions PER DAY of OUR money to indulge his every whim and fantasy. As members of his now wholly-owned media are traveling with him, any news about this grotesque and extreme extravagant waste of taxpayer money–especially considering the US’ current financial disaster brought on principally by this same “monarch”–is virtually, if not literally, criminal.

This sort of trip is unprecedented in US history and leads me to the question “Is The Obama planning to become a pasha-in-exile or is he essentially moving the USA Executive Branch–which was usurped in the first place–to another country, namely India?””

Nancy Pelosi, Buh Bye, Republicans take House

This is a happy day for me and millions of Americans. The Democrat Party has been dislodged from control of the House of Representatives in a huge way. Nancy Pelosi will no longer be Speaker of the House.

Buh Bye Nancy.

Election day, November 2, 2010, Today is the first day of the rest of our country

Today, Tuesday, November 2, 2010 is election day. Perhaps the most important day in the history of this country since it’s founding. If you or someone you know has not voted, make certain that you do. I pray to God that we get the results that we need and that are anticipated. This, of course, will not be the end of the struggle. We must stay engaged and motivate others to do so. This, as it should be, will be a life long endeavor.

“Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”…Winston Churchill

Taxes, Unemployment, Businesses don’t pay taxes people do, Citizen Wells open thread, October 18, 2010

The far left, in ignorance, or as part of their agenda of the end justifies the means, perpetually bashes business and the so called fat cats. They believe that anyone making more money than they should pay more taxes. They believe that corporations are evil.

Here is the truth about taxing business and increased business expenses.
Rush Limbaugh, for many years has done an excellent job of explaining the impact of tax increases on American business and ultimately the American public. He explains that corporations do not pay taxes. This also includes non corporations, all business entities. This is the huge message that you never hear from the left, the business bashers. We already have a seious unemployment situation due to Obama and his far left socialists. I am concerned that tax hikes or hidden cost increases that will begin kicking in 2011, coupled with out of control government spending , will take us over the edge. Our new Congress will have to work fast to deactivate the tax and spend Health Care Legislation, cut taxes and provide a more business and jobs friendly envioronment.

Businesses ultimately do not pay taxes. Taxes become part of the cost of doing business. They are passed on to consumers and impact employment and the overall econo. When a business incurrs higher taxes or other increased costs, some combination of the following occurs:

  • The increased costs are passed along to consumers. This could be a local family run dairy farm. The cost increases are reflected in higher milk prices. When higher inheritance taxes are in effect, the children of the dairy farmers could be forced to shut down. That would, of course, diminish supply.
  • The increased costs prevent more hiring from occuring. The spectre of tax increases is causing that now.
  • The increased costs can lead to layoffs and schedule decreases. Our high unemployment rate is witness to that.
  • The increased costs can lead to pay freezes and pay cuts.
  • The increased costs prevent bussinesses from spending money on expansion and new technology, futher putting a damper on the economy.

And don’t forget, people with money start businesses. Questions they must ask are is it feasible, will it make money and where do I locate. Taxes always influnce those decisions.

So when you are encountered by a brain dead, far left sheeple, educate them on higher taxes and business bashing.

Barbara Billingsley, Leave it to Beaver, Billingsley dead at 94, God bless Barbara Billingsley

Barbara Billingsley, Leave it to Beaver, Billingsley dead at 94, God bless Barbara Billingsley

A friend just informed me that Barbara Billingsley died. It was just a few days ago that I referred to Wally and the Beaver in an article. Such was the effect that the show, “Leave it to Beaver” had on me. But more importantly, growing up in a “Leave it to Beaver” world, where values were treasured, where you knew where you stood, where you felt safe in the United States.

From Time.com.

“Even decades after the show ended, Barbara Billingsley expressed surprise at the lasting affection people had for “Leave it to Beaver” and her role as the warm, supportive mother of a pair of precocious boys.

The actress, who gained supermom status for her gentle portrayal of June Cleaver in the 1950s television series, died Saturday after a long illness. She was 94.

“We knew we were making a good show, because it was so well written,” Billingsley said in 1994. “But we had no idea what was ahead. People still talk about it and write letters, telling how much they watch it today with their children and grandchildren.”

Billingsley, who had suffered from a rheumatoid disease, died at her home in Santa Monica, said family spokeswoman Judy Twersky.

When the show debuted in 1957, Jerry Mathers, who played Beaver, was 9, and Tony Dow, who portrayed Wally, was 12. Billingsley’s character, the perfect stay-at-home 1950s mom, was always there to gently but firmly nurture both through the ups and downs of childhood.

Beaver, meanwhile, was a typical boy whose adventures landed him in one comical crisis after another.

Billingsley’s own two sons said she was pretty much the image of June Cleaver in real life, although the actress disagreed.

“She was every bit as nurturing, classy, and lovely as ‘June Cleaver,’ and we were so proud to share her with the world,” her son Glenn Billingsley said Saturday.

She did acknowledge that she may have become more like June as the series progressed.”

“”America’s favorite mother is now gone,” Dow said in a statement Saturday. “I feel very fortunate to have been her “son” for 11 years. We were wonderful friends and I will miss her very much.””

“Leave it to Beaver” was a bit too perfect with Barbara doing housework in high heels and pearls. However, the the portrayal of people trying to do the right things and caring for each other was the world I grew up in. I hope that we can return.
