The MA Republican Party has a new video out accusing Martha Coakley of taking money from health insurance lobbyists.
“Martha Coakley says she holds health insurers accountable, then one day later, takes money from the very same health insurance lobbyists at a Washington fundraiser.”
Was this a fair portrayal of Coakley’s ties to lobbyists and drug companies?
You decide.
From the Washington Examiner, January 8, 2010.
“Coakley in trouble? Pharma and HMO lobbyists to the rescue”
“With Democrat Martha Coakley in trouble in the Massachusetts special election to fill Ted Kennedy’s seat, Democrats could lose vote No. 60 for President Obama’s health-care bill. In response, an army of lobbyists for drug companies, health insurance companies, and hospitals has teamed up to throw a high-dollar Capitol Hill fundraiser for Coakley next Tuesday night. The invitation is here.
Of the 22 names on the host committee–meaning they raised $10,000 or more for Coakley–17 are federally registered lobbyists, 15 of whom have health-care clients. Of the other five hosts, one is married to a lobbyist, one was a lobbyist in Pennsylvania, another is a lawyer at a lobbying firm, and another is a corporate CEO. Oh, and of course, there’s also the political action commitee for Boston Scientific Corporation.
All the leading drug companies have lobbyists on Coakley’s host committee: Pfizer, Merck, Amgen, Sanofi-Aventis, Eli Lilly, Novartis, Astra-Zeneca, and more. On the insurance side of things, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Cigna, Humana, HealthSouth, and United Health all are represented on the host committee.”
“Here are some of Coakley fundraiser hosts with some of their current health care clients:
Thomas Boggs, Patton Boggs: Bristol-Myers Squibb
Chuck Brain, Capitol Hill Strategies: Amgen, BIO, Merck, PhRMA
Susan Brophy, Glover Park Group: Blue Cross, Pfizer
Steven Champlin, Duberstein Group: AHIP, Novartis, Sanofi-Aventis
Licy Do Canto, Raben Group: Amgen
Gerald Cassidy, Cassidy & Associates: U. Mass Memorial Health Care
David Castagnetti, Mehlman, Vogel, Castagnetti: Abbot Labs, AHIP, Astra-Zenaca, General Electric, Humana, Merck, PhRMA.
Steven Elmendorf, Elmendorf Strategies: Medicines Company, PhRMA, United Health
Shannon Finley, Capitol Counsel: Amgen, Astra-Zeneca, Blue Cross, GE, PhRMA, Sanofi-Aventis.
Heather Podesta, Heather Podesta & Partners: Cigna, Eli Lilly, HealthSouth
Tony Podesta, Podesta Group: Amgen, GE, Merck, Novartis.
Robert Raben, Raben Group: Amgen, GE. ”

“Fox News Reports On Martha Coakley’s “Controversial” DC Fundraiser With Health Care Lobbyists”
“It won’t be the first time but Martha Coakley smeared Scott Brown tonight outside of her big Washington DC lobbyist fundraiser.
Martha Coakley is a smear merchant.
She already tried to tie Republican Scott Brown to Rush Limbaugh even though the two have never met.
Now tonight Martha Coakley tried to tie Scott Brown to “extreme right groups” who she says are pouring money into Massachusetts. She says this despite the fact that Brown raised over $1.3 million, mostly in small donations, in an online money bomb yesterday. And, she had the gall to say this outside of her Washington DC lobbyist fundraiser where 22 big-time lobbyists from drug, health care and insurance companies met tonight to help bail her campaign out.
Brian Maloney has more on Coakley’s big money fundraiser tonight.
As if Martha Coakleys support from the corrupt establishment wasnt already clear enough, now comes word that a coalition of sleazebag industry lobbyists have teamed up with Bay State Democrats for an eleventh-hour bailout of her faltering campaign.
Many of those involved in this hastily-organized rescue attempt have no Bay State ties, their only allegiance is to piggish K Street – Beltway lobbying firms.”

Even my left wing sister in Brookline is voting for Brown. ILMAO when we chatted about the election and HER perspective that the dems are being colossally arrogant.
It has been 36 years since a republican, the esteemed Edward Brooke, the first african american popularly elected to a senate seat, won a Senate election in Massachusetts. Brown has picked up 8 points in the Rasmussen in a week.
For ANY republican to come within 7-10 points of the democratic nominee is considered a moral victory in one of the bluest of states.
If Brown wins it is a huge political game changer and an absolute catatstrophe for Obama and his radical agenda.
I can only hope…….

Update from the field:
Scott is all over the talk shows this week and was on with Tom and Todd (680AM, WRKO, Boston) this morning. He said he ‘has his team of poll-watchers ready to go on Tuesday.’ He knows what the moonbats are capable of and he’s ready.
Lots of talk about Meehan’s manhandling of McCormack in D.C., and they’re no longer calling it a ‘trip and fall.’ The fact that Maatha just stood there and looked on is coming back to bite her in the butt.
Although some union leaderships are endorsing Maatha, union members are on the record saying they’re voting for Scott, regardless of what their unions say (still not a peep from mine).
Daughters Ayla and Arianna have a radio spot supporting their Dad, and pretty much calling Coakley a liar for her negative campaigning, and distorting their Dad’s beliefs. It’s extremely effective!
A guy called in this morning, saying that his 67 year-old Mom, a lifelong Dem, was in the ICU but wanted him to pick up an absentee ballot and bring it to the hospital. Her son asked why, and she said that she had to vote for Scott-that it was important. The son was stunned that she wasn’t voting for the Dem and she said: ‘Back in the day, the Dems were for the working man; now, they’re for the man not working.’
She hit the nail on the head!

Brown’s glossy veneer conceals misleading campaign

MASSACHUSETTS VOTERS have a serious choice to make.
They can fall for the frisky, truck-driving guy in a TV commercial – and end up electing a US senator who blocks much of President Obama’s domestic agenda.
Appalled at arrogant Democrats, Wall Street bankers, and terrorists who sport attack underwear, voters can turn their anger into an excuse for replacing Ted Kennedy with a state senator who is running a clever, but ultimately dishonest campaign.

Continued Sunstein: “We suggest a distinctive tactic for breaking up the hard core of extremists who supply conspiracy theories: cognitive infiltration of extremist groups, whereby government agents or their allies (acting either virtually or in real space, and either openly or anonymously) will undermine the crippled epistemology of believers by planting doubts about the theories and stylized facts that circulate within such groups, thereby introducing beneficial cognitive diversity.”

Sunstein said government agents “might enter chat rooms, online social networks, or even real-space groups and attempt to undermine percolating conspiracy theories by raising doubts about their factual premises, causal logic or implications for political action.”

OT – Haiti – Amazing Speech
I watched the Obamessiah’s speech this AM. I was impressed, overall, that it seems his best speech yet. It is the first time that I felt real sentiment and a “soul” – not just an empty Sack of S___ reading some one elses fancy words. But having said that, I was dumbfounded at his most egregious Messianic statement yet – quoting directly:
“I want to speak directly to the people of Haiti. Few in the world have endured the hardships that you have known. Long before this tragedy, daily life itself was often a bitter struggle. And after suffering so much for so long, to face this new horror must cause some to look up and ask, have we somehow been forsaken? To the people of Haiti, we say clearly, and with conviction, you will not be forsaken; you will not be forgotten.”
What? Is he now responding to people LOOKING UP and asking questions of God? Is he speaking for God? Is he God? What a frightening buffoon. He started out so well, but couldn’t even get all the way through what should have been an easy straightforward speech.

House subpoenas Geithner’s AIG e-mails, phone logs

WASHINGTON (AP) – A House committee probing bailout deals has subpoenaed the Federal Reserve Bank of New York for correspondence from Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and other officials.
The House Oversight and Government Affairs Committee is examining New York Fed decisions that funneled billions of dollars to big banks including Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Morgan Stanley.
Geithner was president of the New York Fed at the time. He approved decisions involving the money from the bailout of failed insurer American International Group Inc., according to an earlier watchdog audit.
In a statement Wednesday, committee chairman Rep. Edolphus Towns, D-N.Y., said he had subpoenaed the New York Fed for documents about the decision to pay off AIG’s business partners and keep their names secret.
The subpoena demands e-mails, phone logs and meeting notes from Geithner; Stephen Friedman, who succeeded him as New York Fed president; New York Fed general counsel Thomas Baxter; and Sarah Dahlgren,
SueK-check this out to see if you or anyone you know is involved in this suit.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/01/08/goldman-sachs-shareholder_n_415986.html
Two new lawsuits accuse Goldman Sachs, now the most profitable securities firm in Wall Street history, of wasting shareholder money by paying out huge bonuses to its employees.
Both suits pose an intriguing question: considering the billions in government assistance offered to the financial sector, are the bank’s hugely lucrative bonuses actually good for shareholders? Or, better yet, are they truly reflective of performance?
The lawsuits, both filed in Manhattan’s New York State Supreme Court, were brought by Illinois’ Central Laborers’ Pension Fund and Illinois shareholder Ken Brown. Each suit alleges that the bank’s much-criticized compensation plan is not structured in the best interest of shareholders. Recently, the Security Police and Fire Professionals of America Retirement Fund filed a similar suit against the company.

2) In the video above Coakley when asked why she was in Washington she claims that Brown is being supported by extreme right wing “Republican” groups and continues in that same sentence that she is working with “Democrats” both here and in Massachusetts that will support her.

California ACORN breaks off into new nonprofit group
The community organization group will keep the same mission and many of the same staffers, but will not belong to the troubled national alliance.
By Kate Linthicum
January 13, 2010 | 5:09 a.m
California ACORN has broken away from its embattled parent organization to form a new nonprofit group, a move that observers say might foreshadow other defections that would seriously undermine one of the nation’s largest and most politically powerful community organizations.
The new group will have the same mission, will be staffed by many of the same employees who worked for ACORN, and will be funded by most of the same donors, said Amy Schur, the former head organizer for California ACORN.
Schur sits on the interim board of directors for the new group, the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, which was incorporated in California on Monday. ACCE is seeking federal nonprofit status.
A spokesman for ACORN declined to comment.
Schur said ACCE plans changes, including outsourcing accounting and forming an advisory council of 22 community leaders, in order to avoid the problems with finances and management that made ACORN vulnerable to conservative attacks.
The news comes four months after Congress voted to cut federal funding for ACORN, which advocates for higher minimum wages, access to affordable housing and increased voter registration in low-income communities.
Congress was under pressure to strip funding from the organization after two undercover activists posing as a pimp and prostitute released secretly recorded videotapes in which they appear to receive advice on tax evasion, human smuggling and child prostitution from ACORN employees in several states.
ACORN, or the Assn. of Community Organizations for Reform Now, has also been accused of voter registration fraud in several states.
Although a federal judge ruled in December that the funding cut was unconstitutional, and a Congressional Research Service report found that ACORN had not broken any laws in the last five years, the scandal so tarnished ACORN’s reputation that the California branch, which boasted 48,000 members and an annual operating budget of $3.5 million, decided to break off, Schur said.
“The level of controversy had become a significant distraction for us,” said Schur, who said members raised the idea of forming a new organization at a statewide board meeting in Oakland in October.
Schur said California members were looking for local control and were frustrated by a lack of transparency. In 2008, it was revealed that top ACORN leaders had tried to hide the embezzlement of nearly $1 million from the organization nine years ago by the brother of ACORN founder Wade Rathke.
