Occasionally I watch 60 Minutes.

I am glad I did so last night.

“60 Minutes” investigates how some businesses have fired American workers and replaced them with cheaper labor: temporary, foreign workers with H-1B visas”

“Protecting American jobs was a signature theme of President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” campaign. A frequent target of candidate Trump was the H-1B visa program. The program, created more than 25 years ago, allows American companies to fill gaps in the workforce from overseas with highly skilled employees, who can’t be found in the U.S. Many businesses use the program as intended, but we discovered more and more are taking advantage of loopholes in the law to fire American workers and replace them with younger, cheaper, temporary foreign workers with H-1B visas. But before the American workers walk out the door they often face the humiliating prospect of having to train the people taking their jobs.

Last October, Robert Harrison, a senior telecom engineer at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center, was called to a meeting at the university with about 80 of his IT co-workers.

Robert Harrison: We are sorry to inform you that as of Feb. 28, you’ll no longer have a job. We’re going to outsource your position to this company in India.

Bill Whitaker: To a company in India.

Robert Harrison: Yes, sir.

Harrison was told he could stay on the job, get paid for four more months, and get a bonus if he trained his replacement.

Robert Harrison: And now I’m being told that I h– not only gonna lose my job, but also have to train these people to take my job.

Bill Whitaker: Are you angry?

Robert Harrison: Pissed. That exceeds angry. I’m really not a violent guy. I love people. But I’ve envisioned myself just backhanding the guy as he’s sitting next to me, trying to learn what I know. And I was like, God, please don’t let them send anybody to sit next to me, to shadow me. I don’t want to do this. I really don’t.

Harrison and his colleagues staged a protest outside the Medical Center. His fellow worker, senior systems administrator Kurt Ho is losing his job too. He had just trained his replacement from India.

Kurt Ho: I think, for once, we’re gonna stand up as Americans and say enough is enough. We’re not gonna take it anymore.

Sara Blackwell: Thank you for standing up for what you believe in.

Their rally was organized by this woman: Florida attorney Sara Blackwell.

Sara Blackwell: This is about the companies making the decision that you are worthless to them.

She represents hundreds of U.S. workers who were fired and replaced by foreign workers with H-1B visas.

Sara Blackwell: When you tell someone their real reason for getting rid of these jobs is for cheap foreign labor that should offend everyone.

Bill Whitaker: They have to train the worker who’s going to take their job?

Sara Blackwell: Right. They are told by their company: if you don’t train this person in a way that we approve of them being trained, then you don’t get your severance.

The UCSF Medical Center is a highly regarded state-run institution. Administrators say outsourcing the IT jobs could save $30 million taxpayer over the next five years. That’s a fraction of the university’s $5.8 billion annual budget, but to Robert Harrison, it’s his job.

Robert Harrison: I can’t wrap my mind around training somebody to take my position. You know, it’s my livelihood. How am I supposed to feel?

Bill Whitaker: I’ve heard some workers say this is like digging your own grave. Is that what it feels like?

Robert Harrison: It feels worse than that. It feels like not only am I digging the grave, but I’m getting ready to stab myself in the gut and fall into the grave.”

I do not get to listen to Sean Hannity as much as I would like but I do respect his opinion.

I caught a few minutes of his radio show yesterday as he was voicing his concerns about the way the Republicans were rolling out their healthcare proposal.

“I want to start with this health care debate and the frustration that I feel, and that I have, and why I believe this rollout was not handled properly.

“And look, at the end of the day, do I think it’s all going to probably work out? Are we going to get a repeal and replace? Are we going to get a better health care system? Are we going to undo the mess of Obamacare? None of the promises kept: keep your doctor; keep your plans; save $2,500 a year.

“Yeah, I do believe that we’re going to get there. But in the lead up to all of this – this is one of the most important pieces of legislation.

“And here’s what I don’t understand – and I’ll say this respectfully, but I’m really annoyed about it. Respectfully, the fact that eight years later, that this has been their rallying cry to win the 2010 – win control of the House in 2010 – and then moving further and getting control of the Senate in 2014. And getting the presidency in 2016. And that there’s not a consensus bill. And that—

Maybe all of the people in the Freedom Caucus, the study group, the people now that are angry, these conservative groups like Club for Growth and Americans for Prosperity and Freedom Works and Heritage Foundation and the Heritage Action group, and then you have Senator Rand Paul and Ted Cruz and Mike Lee, and then you have Congressman Louie Gohmert and Congressman Mark Meadows and Dave Brat and Jim Jordan and so many others – they were all saying what they were going to disagree with before the bill ever got released.

“And I remember, and I won’t tell everybody who I talked to, but I told a lot of people, I said, ‘You need to get everybody in a room.’

“And wouldn’t it have been better – instead of having a public fight among Republicans over the repealing and replacing of this bill – if they had gotten together, worked out their differences and maybe the way it was rolled out would be a big monumental ceremony with every Republican in the House and every Republican in the Senate. The president gives a speech. He outlines what’s in the consensus bill of Republicans, how they are going to do it and how it’s going to benefit you, the American people.

There has been a distinct shift in the composition of job gains in the first full job report under Donald Trump: whereas in the recent past, jobs under Obama were mainly focused in low-paying, minimum-wage categories, such as retail, hospitality, education and, of course, food service and drinking places, in February there was a notable change with some of Trump’s favorite sectors, such as manufacturing and construction posting dramatic gains.

While all sectors of the economy, with the exception of retail and utilities, expanded payrolls in February, it was the jump in manufacturing employment, which increased 28,000, and the largest increase since August 2013, that caught analysts’ attention. Employment rose in food manufacturing (+9,000) and machinery (+7,000) but fell in transportation equipment (-6,000). Over the past 3 months, manufacturing has added 57,000 jobs.”

“NC teen accused of beheading his mother is in country illegally and wanted by ICE

A North Carolina teen who made international headlines Monday for allegedly beheading his mother with a knife is in the country illegally and is now wanted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deportation.

Bryan Cox, a spokesman for ICE in the southern region, said the agency has filed a detainer for 18-year-old Oliver Funes-Machado, who is charged with first-degree murder for allegedly cutting off the head of his mother, Yesenia Funes Beatriz Machado. The suspect was originally identified by local authorities with the last name spelled Funez.

An ICE detainer means Funes-Machado would enter ICE custody if he bonds out of local criminal custody in the murder case. The Associated Press was reporting late Tuesday that Funes-Machado was transferred to Central Prison in Raleigh under a safekeeping order.

“Given the charge,” Cox said, “the detainer would also apply at whatever point if/when he gets out of prison down the road. So either avenue. But the detainer does not preclude any criminal prosecution.”

Funes-Machado is originally from Honduras, ICE officials said.”

“DURHAM POLICE ENDING TRAFFIC CHECKPOINTS BECAUSE OF IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT CONCERNS
The Durham Police Department is suspending traffic checkpoints in the city in an effort to build better community relations.

“Because of the climate and the pulse of the community and the fear that exists, I did send a directive out,” said Chief C.J. Davis. “This was done to dispel fears that have currently arisen and to further encourage sustainable relationships with the diverse community we serve.”

The directive was issued last week.

Officers will continue to participate in multi-jurisdictional highway safety campaigns, such as Booze It & Lose It and Click It or Ticket.

“When planned and executed appropriately, these operations are very effective. However, in recent weeks there has been national and local concern regarding the role of local law enforcement officers in federal immigration enforcement,” said Davis.”

William Binney, a former highly placed NSA official turned whistleblower, contended in an exclusive interview today that the National Security Agency (NSA) is “absolutely” monitoring the phone calls of President Donald Trump.

Binney was an architect of the NSA’s surveillance program. He became a famed whistleblower when he resigned on October 31, 2001 after spending more than 30 years with the agency.”

If they weren’t behind it, they certainly had the data. Now the difference here is that FBI and CIA have direct access inside the NSA databases. NBC News keeps harping on Donald Trump not being honest or exagerating.

They keep mentioning Trump’s involvement in the “birther” movement.

I am calling for a Justice Department investigation into Barack Obama’s records including but not limited to.

  • His birth certificate and proof of US birth.
  • His passport (which John Brennan’s company may have cauterized).
  • His Selective Service application.
  • His college records.
  • Other records that may relate to immigration.

Time for NBC News and the other fake news sites to put up or shut up.

The so called birth certificate placed on WhiteHouse.gov was not a certified copy of an original.

Birth certificates did not look like that in 1961!

If the image is not a forgery, Hawaii may consider it a birth certificate as an abstract, since there were 4 ways to get one in 1961, but it does not prove US birth!

Obama stated that he personally did not order a wiretap of Donald Trump.

“I spoke with the President twice yesterday about the wiretap story. I haven’t seen him this pissed off in a long time. When I mentioned Obama “denials” about the wiretaps, he shot back: “This will be investigated, it will all come out. I will be proven right.”

The big news Saturday after Trump’s disclosure was the fact that neither Obama nor any Obama administration officials actually denied that Trump’s offices were ever wire tapped.

Instead the press focused on the rather narrow denial that Obama himself never ordered such a wiretap. [Wouldn’t it strain belief that a major presidential candidate’s offices were wiretapped and the president was never informed?]

Today on the “Meet the Press” James Clapper, Obama’s Director of National Intelligence, denied any agency that operated under him, including the FBI, ever wiretapped the Trump offices. “To my knowledge,” he added. [Wasn’t Clapper the same man who testified under oath that the NSA never collected phone data on millions of Americans — a fact proven untrue by the Snowden revelations?]

But the most important Clapper revelation from “Meet the Press” was this: He empathically told Todd the Obama intelligence agencies found “no evidence” of collusion between Trump’s campaign and the Russians. Nothing. Nada.

If that is true, and Trump is right he was indeed wiretapped, it will only fuel his argument that Obama administration officials improperly eavesdropped on his offices.

Trump will be justified when he claimed in tweets yesterday that this was Nixon-style “Watergate” activities.

There are number of couple things to remember here as this story unfolds:”

“Clearly, the Democrats aren’t interested in a fair process. They are on a mission: torpedo Trump early.

This week, President Trump gave a bold and inclusive speech to Congress. It won wide praise. The Democrats don’t want Trump to succeed. Hence, all the smokescreens.”

Following a series of better than expected GDP-feeding prints, consensus had expected Q4 GDP to tick higher in the first revision released today, rising from 1.9% to 2.1%. However, that did not happen and instead, the revised print came in unchanged at 1.9%. Notable underlying revisions include: an upward revision in consumer spending, both in services and goods; a downward revision to business investment, mostly in intellectual property products and equipment; and a downward revision to state and local government spending, primarily in structures.”

The increase in real GDP in 2016 reflected increases in consumer spending, residential investment, state and local government spending, exports, and federal government spending. And, we are confident, it will come as no surprise that in Q1, when real GDP grew by $44 billion in real terms, or 1.1% annualized, from $16.471 trillion to $16.515 trillion, Healthcare was responsible for $26 billion (rising from $1,896 billion to $1,929 billion annualized) or a whopping 58.4% of the total.”

“Fast forward 6 years, when a report by Harvard and Princeton economists Lawrence Katz and Alan Krueger, confirms exactly what we warned. In their study, the duo show that from 2005 to 2015, the proportion of Americans workers engaged in what they refer to as “alternative work” soared during the Obama era, from 10.7% in 2005 to 15.8% in 2015. Alternative, or “gig” work is defined as “temporary help agency workers, on-call workers, contract company workers, independent contractors or freelancers”, and is generally unsteady, without a fixed paycheck and with virtually no benefits.

The two economists also found that each of the common types of alternative work increased from 2005 to 2015—with the largest changes in the number of independent contractors and workers provided by contract firms, such as janitors that work full-time at a particular office, but are paid by a janitorial services firm.

Krueger, who until 2013 was also the top White House economist serving as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers under Obama, was “surprised” by the finding.

Quoted by quartz, he said “We find that 94% of net job growth in the past decade was in the alternative work category,” said Krueger. “And over 60% was due to the [the rise] of independent contractors, freelancers and contract company workers.” In other words, nearly all of the 10 million jobs created between 2005 and 2015 were not traditional nine-to-five employment.”

“More than 200 people are closer to having ID cards Friday night. The cards are not government issued, but some local law enforcement agencies support giving them out. This is happening even in time when the Trump administration is talking tough about any help for people who are in the country illegally.

FaithAction is a group that supports immigrants, legal or illegal, and it has the support of law enforcement agencies like Greensboro police.

“When someone gets pulled over the first thing police asked for is identification and if they’re not able to provide that, they could potentially take that person to jail,” said David Fraccaro, the executive director of FaithAction. “That would mean taking our law-enforcement off the street and into a magistrate’s office for hours, when we have bigger fish to fry.”

Greensboro police say the IDs have worked well in the three years since FaithAction started this. To get the cards people must pay $10, go to an orientation, provide a different form of ID, like a passport, and have proof of their address.

Tough talk on immigration from the Trump administration has them organization wondering about the ID card program’s future.

“Don’t feel positive about the executive orders but we are feeling positive about the tremendous support from local law enforcement, who want the same thing we do… a safer and inclusive more united community,” Fraccaro said.

The Greensboro Police Department says it will continue to accept the IDs because its goal is to create a safer community and the IDs help.”

 “§ 15A-306. Consulate documents not acceptable as identification.
(a) The following documents are not acceptable for use in determining a person’s actual identity or residency by a justice, judge, clerk, magistrate, law enforcement officer, or other government official:
 (1) A matricula consular or other similar document, other than a valid passport, issued by a consulate or embassy of another country.
(2) An identity document issued or created by any person, organization, county, city, or other local authority, except where expressly authorized to be used for this purpose by the General Assembly.
(b) No local government or law enforcement agency may establish, by policy or ordinance, the acceptability of any of the documents described in subsection (a) of this section as a form of identification to be used to determine the identity or residency of any person. Any local government policy or ordinance that contradicts this section is hereby repealed.”
This was widely reported.
However, the statute reads:
Article 18. Identification Documents.

 (a) The following documents are not acceptable for use in determining a person’s actual identity or residency by a justice, judge, clerk, magistrate, law enforcement officer, or other government official:

Where did (c) come from?
The only reference to it that I found was from the Elon News Network.

“My question to you is, why do you believe that you can accept Faith Action or other non govt. approved IDs since (c) does not supercede (b)?”
A new bill HB100 is currently before the legislature.

c has been stricken through for removal.
There is also much added about municipal accountability.
And BTW, not only is the City of Greensboro violating the law, they are contributing money to Faith Action.
