Texas Gov. Rick Perry received an injection of his own stem cells during spinal fusion surgery last month and wants his state to be a leader in the use of adult stem cells in medical treatment.
But using a concentrated mixture of adult stem cells to fuse bone hasn’t been tested in any major U.S. trials, raising questions of whether a governor (and reportedly a potential Republican presidential candidate) should be advocating an unproven medical procedure.
Perry and a state representative who has multiple sclerosis championed a healthcare bill that created an adult stem cell bank in Texas. A month after Perry signed that bill into law, his friend, Stanley Jones, MD, a Houston-based orthopedist, performed spinal fusion surgery on the governor using Perry’s own stem cells to treat a recurring spinal injury, according to an article in the Texas Tribune.
There have not been any phase III clinical trials that tested the utility and safety of stem cell spinal fusion procedures, nor have there been any published trials of the procedure in the U.S.
Bryon Petersen, PhD, a stem cell researcher at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, in Winston-Salem, N.C., said that culturing cells in a lab for a long period of time could potentially have a “deleterious” effect on the cells and transform them into potentially cancer-causing cells. Those cells must be carefully weeded out before being injected into a patient, he said in an email to MedPage Today and ABC News.
George Daley, MD, PhD, a professor of biological chemistry and molecular pharmacology at Harvard Medical School, pointed to the dearth of evidence on the value of injecting mesenchymal stem cells, and said he worries that the procedure is being done based on anecdotes or observational trials.
“I suspect that what is going on here is part of the world-wide rush to commercialize stem cells prematurely, to capitalize on the hype and [make] a buck, long before the treatments have been proven safe and effective,” Daley said in an email.
Richard Fessler, MD, professor of neurological surgery at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, echoed Daley’s sentiments.
“Although this is a promising technology for the future, at this point there is minimal evidence that it is effective in humans,” he said in an email.
Jonathan Moreno, PhD, professor of biomedical ethics at the University of Pennsylvania, was harsher in his assessment:
“The medical claims being made for this ‘treatment’ are nonsense,” he said, also in an email.
Moreno dismissed the science of the procedure, but said the political ramifications of the Perry situation are especially interesting: “Namely, how talk of a stem cell industry in Texas would cause anxiety among cultural conservatives that such an effort could involve more controversial forms of research, like embryonic stem cells,” he said.
Adult stem cells are not the same as embryonic stem cells. Perry — and many conservatives — oppose using cells from human embryos for research.
Daley pointed to another political issue: A governor using his power to promote a procedure that hasn’t been proven.
“It’s sad when someone in such a powerful position like the governor of a major state can act without the benefit of evidence-based medicine,” he said.
Our Country can not survive 4 more years of the boHillary regime. The Republicans have a great opportunity to defeat boHillary in 2012, it must not be wasted on a Candidate who may not be able to go the distance.
I defer to my Wife’s Professional Judgment on Medical Issues and she thinks it was ill-advised for Perry to have experimental back surgery on July 1 and then attempt to wage a Presidential Campaign in less than a month.
Let’s be honest. If Perry’s pain was so bad that he felt the need for surgery, then it is foolish to think that he can recover from that surgery in less than a month. Neither my Wife or I know of a single case where back surgery was successful in preventing back pain long term. Yes, back surgery is necessary in cases of paralysis or nerve impingement where there is no other option. But again, we know of no cases where back surgery has cured back pain long term. After a long recovery process (far more than 1 month) patients may have short term relief from back pain but the back pain invariably recurs to some extent and more often than not the pain is worse as a result of scar tissue.
I pray that Gov Perry has a full recovery, but I doubt that he will be able to hold up to the rigors of a Presidential Campaign.

I would like to see a Jewish president one day, and would not have a problem with a Hindu president. I could even accept a Muslim president. JFK was not a healthy man….He suffered early on with colitis, had 2 failed back surgeries for compression fractures. Then in 1947, he was officially diagnosed with addison’s disease. He was treated with corticosteriods daily. He was prone to UTI’s and URI’s. Took tons of antibiotics. Most people never knew how sick he truly was.
FDR another example, but remarkable president’s in their own way.
Abe Lincoln sure looked like he had Marfan syndrome..but.I don’t think that has ever been proven.

Sure, if you read the links they go back as early as the 90’s. In their (Muslim’s) own words after translation tell why they hate the the U.S.
It’s exactly as Ron Paul had quoted them stating. U.S. Occupation,

Other than Gov Perry there is very little enthusiasm for this field of candidates. I still may vote for Perry in the Republican Primary if he is healthy even if Gov Bush enters the race but it is clearly time for Bush to enter the field considering Gov Perry’s questionable health.
The worst thing that could happen to the Republican Party and to the Nation would be for romney to win the Republican Primary by default because romney would surely lose to boHillary.
I heard Perry on a local Boston talk station interview this afternoon. Here’s why he doesn’t have my vote:
1. Supports instate tuition for illegal aliens; even had the stones to try to justify it, citing ‘education above all else’, and
2. He’s another literary scholar who pronounces ‘nuclear,’ ‘nucular.’ It would scare the hell out of me if Perry won the Presidency and had his finger on the red ‘nucular’ button.

I heard Perry on a local Boston talk station interview this afternoon. Here’s why he doesn’t have my vote:
1. Supports instate tuition for illegal aliens; even had the stones to try to justify it, citing ‘education above all else’, and
2. He’s another literary scholar who pronounces ‘nuclear,’ ‘nucular.’ It would scare the hell out of me if Perry won the Presidency and had his finger on the red ‘nucular’ button.

Let me get this straight. Are you saying that you agree with the demRat Moron’s paxson allegation that Gov Perry had experimental back surgery for no reason? Do you honestly believe that anyone would have back surgery it they had no back pain and no reason to have surgery?
I keep hearing that OB wants to run against Perry and fears Romney more, at least, that is what the Fox pundits say. Who knows? If the economy is bad, which it will be, OB will be in lots of trouble anyway. I will back Romney, if Perry is out, but I don’t see that on any other blog. Where is that info coming from? I think Romney’s debate skills have really improved to go against Obama. Perry still needs to improve in that area.

Talk to any health care professional knowledgeable about back surgery and you will find that it is questionable that Perry could fully recover from back surgery in less than a month.
IMHO it is time for Jeb Bush or another prominent republican enters the race because it would be a disaster if romney got the nomination by default.

First of all, if the surgery was July 1st this is 2 1/2 months. Second of all, who says he has to be “fully recovered”. He isn’t an athlete, he’s a politician. A wealthy one at that whom I imagine has the proper people around him to provide any relief that he may need.

At yesterday’s Energy and Commerce Committee hearing, DOE loan chief Jonathan Silver argued that the Solyndra loan initiative was begun by the Bush administration. In fact, less than two weeks before Bush left office, the Energy Department’s credit committee unanimously decided not to fund Solyndra. By the way, the Energy Department announced another $1.2 billion in solar-firm loans this week. It appears the only way to end this fraud on the taxpayers is to vote Obama out of office.

Turner won by eight points in a district where Democrats have a 3-to-1 voting edge and Obama secured 55 percent of the vote in 2008. Silent Cal was in the White House the last time a Republican carried the district.

Nonsense! Gardasil is an effective vaccination for HPV which prevents cervical cancer. It was thoroughly tested by the FDA and is prescribed by Pediatricians every day throughout the US. Gov Perry did a good thing in providing the vaccination. He just went about it in the wrong way and he admitted that. The only candidates who have been hurt by this controversy are bachmann, palin and santorum for lying about Gardasil. I hope they are get sued by Merck and Perry’s former chief of staff.

Romney should be the overwhelming frontrunner, given the hierarchical nature of Republican presidential politics. Historically, the party has nominated the logical next in line — Bob Dole, George H.W. Bush, John McCain.
That would be Romney in 2012, but it’s striking how much skepticism surrounds Romney’s expected 2012 run.

Already, I hear conservative talk show hosts wishing they could build a Frankenstein monster — taking a part from each of the candidates to build the perfect and unbeatable candidate.
Mitt Romney’s resume and business experience. Sarah Palin’s electricity and ability to relate to everyday Americans. Michele Bachmann’s plainspoken passion for conservatism. Newt Gingrich’s intelligence and debate skills, and so on.
But there’s no need to build that person. He already exists. And he’s the one Republican who could shake up this race and put Obama’s reelection in jeopardy: Jeb Bush.
Here’s a bigger problem. No matter what name you throw out there, the result is an enthusiasm gap. Even those who say they would support Romney, Palin, or another GOP hopeful aren’t excited about the possibility that their choice could be elected president. That could be a recipe for low voter turnout.
All the more reason that Jeb Bush should reconsider his decision to stay out of the fray next year, and jump in.
Just two and a half years ago, the conventional thinking was that the Bush brand had been tarnished by George W.’s less-than-stellar second term. But something has happened since then: The Obama administration. And now the hot items at political novelty stores are cups and t-shirts with pictures of a smiling “W” asking: “Miss Me Yet?”
Some Republicans might be ready for a Bush do-over, and Jeb Bush could benefit from that. He is a unifier who knows how to work with Democrats, a pragmatist who is not afraid to try new approaches to tackling stubborn policy issues, and a brainy student of politics who does his homework.
And there’s one more thing — which happens to be no small item at a time when many Republicans are repelling Latino voters by word and deed: Jeb Bush has mastered the art of reaching out to Latinos. A fluent Spanish speaker who is married to a Latina, Bush received — in his 1998 election and 2004 re-election as Florida governor — as much as 60 percent of the Hispanic vote. That was better than big brother did with Hispanic voters while running for governor of Texas. That could be a game changer in 2012, if Bush were the GOP presidential nominee, especially since Obama is hemorrhaging Latino support due to his clumsy handling of the immigration issue.

In upholding the first-ever court defeat handed to the 87-year-old ADL, U.S. District Judge Edward Nottingham said the organization had endorsed and publicized the bigotry accusations of a Jewish couple against its neighbors without either investigating the case or weighing the consequences. How many times is the ADL refered to as a “civil rights organization”? Perhaps they should ask people from the organizations found in ADL files. ADL functions more like an agency of the national security state. They follow people and attempt to demonize people they don’t approve of. When that doesn’t work – they either coerce/spin reporters (and their bosses) into furthering their agenda. In addition chiropractic adjustments being done to a DETERIORATING vertabrae can lead to the necessity for vertabrae fusion surgery. If you are having back pain it is often the result of a herniated disc which in turn is pressing on a close proximity nerve. Surgery to trim off the disc is sometimes very helpful. But it could return as the disc continues to deteriorate. At which point anterior fusion might be in order.
The LAST place that you want to have anterior fusion is in the CERVICAL spine. It can really impede the flexibility of your upper body. Fusion surgery anywhere in either the cervical,or thoriac spine is debillitating,and will impede physical flexibility to a small extent. However it either removes the pain completely or reduces it to a point where pain medication is needed only occasionally.

my guess is that it is either some kind of late filing or some kind of additional info regarding something about indonesia that is in the file. or maybe both.
given that the haw doh seems to be playing right along with this whole thing, though, it could also be that all that’s in the file is stuff that obama and his crew started putting in there once he started running for public office in illinois.

Some people here who think they know it all and say so need to research the facts re Gardisil. It is of limited value in the whold scheme of treating and preventing CC. It only addresses one facet of the total picture and most cases of the infection will resolve themselves. Seems there are some pharma clones posting here. I could link, but there are so many that talk of this being an unnecessary for everyone and optional vaccine that they are easy to research on one’s own. So for the Mr./Ms. Know Everything and My Opinion is the Right One—go look for yourself and get educated. In the end it just is really one issue anyway—the govt., of any level, has no right to mandate medical treatment that at best is unproven and at worst harms more than it helps.
Most everyone knows at least one key family member or close personal friend that has had major back problems resulting in surgery. This is no easy task to overcome, if ever. In most cases, alleviation of “some” pain diminishes, but it does not eliminate pain altogether. Least no one I personally know.
My father-in-law worked for the State County and severally injured his back while he and 6 other workers attempted to remove one of the large Air condition units on the top of a high school. Someone lost balance and fell, leaving the other workers losing balance as well. In the end, my father-in-law broke 2 vertebrates in his lower back, completely ruptured 3 disks beyond repair and required major surgery. 2 permanent titanium rods, 5 fused vertebrates, a wire mesh surrounding it all, not including 50% of his hip bone they cut off to use his own bone marrow for the fusion itself.
After a year of excruciating pain, the constant “shakes” from the same, the doctors could only give him massive amount of daily pain killers and continue to increase them over the same time-frame. For a man that does not drink or smoke, he quickly realized he was becoming addicted to the pain medication and dropped them all together.
Today, 9 years later and 69 years old, he still shakes and deals with the pain. In order to pick up an object off the floor, it requires a difficult lengthy task. Having to hold on to something with one hand, squat to one knee carefully, then the other, he can eventually get to all fours and pick up the small object. The same difficult task is required to stand back up.
No, I don’t know of anyone that has had such major back surgery and recovered. Better maybe, after many years, but not cured by far. The largest hurdle is for those that take the massive pain killers to assist the pain. That in itself is dangerous, not only to the body and mind, but becoming a “quite addict”. My father-in-law had the self courage to recognize this, but many do not.
Just thought I would share that personal knowledge.

The primary problem with Gardisil is it’s ineffective if your child (Boy or Girl) has already been exposed to, and ever contracted quite a few types of common childhood warts (aka. HPV) before the age of 12 years old.
Granted there are over 130 variants of HPV, however if your child has been exposed to/contracted any of the following variants of HPV, the vaccine is useless. If you have a good Pediatrician they will inform you of this before they offer to give the vaccination. Like all vaccines, it only works if given before one has been exposed to/contracted the virus.
These common childhood warts (HPV types) include –
HPV types 2 and 4 (most common); also types 1, 3, 26, 29, and 57.
Plantar warts (myrmecia) – HPV types 1, 2, 3, 4, 27, 28, and 58.
Anogenital warts (condylomata acuminata or venereal warts) – HPV types 6,11, 42, 44.
Flat warts – HPV types 3, 10, and 28
Butcher’s warts – HPV type 7.
Heck’s disease (Focal epithelial hyperplasia) – HPV types 13 and 32.
