Hurricane Irene floodwaters, Kill Devil Hills and Manteo, Sound side flooding, Four feet of floodwaters, North Carolina

Hurricane Irene floodwaters, Kill Devil Hills and Manteo, Sound side flooding, Four feet of floodwaters, North Carolina

From the LA Times August 28, 2011.

“North Carolina assesses Irene damage, begins cleanup”

“By dawn Sunday, the four feet of Hurricane Irene floodwaters that had suddenly inundated downtown Manteo, N.C., on Saturday night had drained off to an ankle-deep trickle. Dirty brown waterlines left on the sides of coffee shops and bookstores were waist high. Tod Clissold, owner of Poor Richard’s Sandwich Shop on Queen Elizabeth Street, arrived to find an awful mess. The murky floodwaters left a trail of sludge on his shop’s floor and his food stocks were spoiled.

“It was a foot deep inside,” he said. “The worst flooding I’ve ever seen.”

Along North Carolina’s Outer Banks on Sunday, residents awoke to flotsam and debris, downed trees, beach erosion and flooded yards (even a beached dolphin, which was saved) — but no structural damage. Flooding from the Roanoke and Croatan sounds that bracket Roanoke Island inundated some homes, closed roads and knocked out power, but it could have been a lot worse.

No deaths or serious injuries were reported on the Outer Banks from what Warren Judge, chairman of the Dare County commissioners, called “epic sound-side flooding.”

“People who have never had sound-side flooding got it,” Judge said. “People who have never had flooding in their house got it.”

Ray Sturza, mayor of the beach town of Kill Devil Hills, has lived there 25 years, through five major hurricanes. “I’ve never seen water come in the way it did last night,” he said. Kermit Skinner, the Manteo town manager, said no previous storm had ever dumped water into the living areas of his home.

But Irene did.”

“”We’re thankful,” said Bobby Outten, manager of Dare County, population 35,000, which includes most of the Outer Banks.

Assessment teams fanned out across Roanoke Island and the beaches, preparing damage reports to be sent to state and federal emergency officials. Shannon Twiddy and Becky Breiholz were out at first light, wearing waterproof boots (Breiholz’s were bright pink) and sloshing through the muck left by floodwaters.

Breiholz, who braved the storm at her home in Kill Devil Hills, said she’d never such severe sound-side flooding in her 30 years there. But for hurricane damage, she said, “I’ve seen a lot worse.”

The two women –- Twiddy is Manteo’s finance officer and Breiholz the town clerk -– snapped digital photographs of the damage. They took note of every shop, awning, bench, light pole and sidewalk fixture damaged in the storm. They were surprised it wasn’t worse, given the dire warnings of a possibly catastrophic storm.

“I have to admit, I was getting a little scared early on and thinking, you know, maybe I should leave,” Breiholz said. As hurricanes go, Breiholz said, Irene was memorable for its sound-side flooding. But for property damage, it was just another storm.

“We were blessed,” she said.”

Muslim Brotherhood penetrates Obama administration, FBI special agent John Guandolo, Muslim reformer Tarek Fatah confirms

Muslim Brotherhood penetrates Obama administration, FBI special agent John Guandolo, Muslim reformer Tarek Fatah confirms

From World Net Daily August 27, 2011.

“Underpublicized threat deep in White House
FBI: Penetration by radical agents worse than thought”

“Infiltration of the federal government by members of the radical Muslim Brotherhood is worse than some have warned recently, says a former FBI special agent in Washington.

The agent confirmed that at least three operatives of the Egypt-based Brotherhood – whose credo is “Jihad is our way and death in the cause of Allah is our dream” – have penetrated the Obama administration.

The shocking charge was first leveled by Muslim reformer Tarek Fatah during a recent speech in Toronto.

“When someone says that there is penetration of jihadi Islamists within society, do not dismiss it as some right-wing, xenophobic, racist rant,” warned Fatah, a Canadian journalist.
“Today in the White House, there are three members of the Muslim Brotherhood that influence Obama’s policy,” he told the audience gathered for an IdeaCity conference. “One is Rashad Hassan, who is the American ambassador to the 52-nation Organization of Islamic (Conference).”
Fatah also named “Dalia Mogahed, who writes (Obama’s) speeches, who comes from the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt; and another woman, an academic, (who) was appointed in that circle.”

Former FBI special agent John Guandolo says Obama’s ties to agents for the Muslim Brotherhood are even more extensive.

“The level of penetration in the last three administrations is deep,” he said. “For this president, it even goes back to his campaign with Muslim Brotherhood folks working with him then.”

Equally alarming, the Brotherhood also has placed several operatives and sympathizers within key positions in Homeland Security and the U.S. military, notes Guandolo, a former Marine Corps officer.

The veteran federal agent says such infiltration threatens national security, because the U.S. leadership of the international Brotherhood has outlined a secret plan to “destroy” the U.S. and other Western governments “from within.”

After the 9/11 attacks, he says the FBI discovered the plan written in Arabic among documents seized from the basement of a prominent Brotherhood leader living in a Washington suburb.

Guandolo says the stated Muslim Brotherhood strategy for change “from within” includes the installation of loyal Brothers into political office.

President Obama’s top Muslim ambassador, Rashad Hussain, has raised suspicions. He is U.S. special envoy to the Organization of the Islamic Conference, a powerful international group headquartered in Saudi Arabia and closely aligned with the Muslim Brotherhood.

Before first joining the White House as a lawyer, Hussain regularly spoke to Brotherhood front groups and defended Brotherhood leaders like Sami al-Arian. Hussain at first denied defending the convicted terrorist, claiming he was misquoted, but then recanted after Politico.com produced a tape-recording of his remarks.

Recently, he has been overseas encouraging devotion to Islam, including in terror hotspots like Afghanistan.

In fact, Hussain has told Afghans the antidote to Islamic violence “is Islam itself.”

“I am of the opinion that one of the strongest tools that you can use to counter radicalization and violent extremism is Islam itself, because Islam rejects violent extremism,” he said during a recent speech in Kabul.

Hussain, a devout Muslim, says promotion of the Muslim faith is “key” to the administration’s strategy to turn Muslims away from violence.

“We see that as one of the key elements of a strategy to address this type of violence,” he said.

The strategy is at odds with what the co-chairmen of the 9/11 Commission recently recommended in their follow-up report on homegrown terror, “Assessing the Terrorist Threat: A Report of the Bipartisan Policy Center’s National Security Preparedness Group.”

The study found that Islam was motivating terrorists not just abroad, but inside America’s Muslim community. And it scolded U.S. leaders for pretending religion is not a factor in growing violence.

Still, Hussain insists: “When it comes to the problem of violent extremism, Islam is not the problem.””

Hurricane Irene and Earthquake, Washington’s Apocalypse This Time, King memorial dedication postponed, Congressman Goodlatte investigations?

Hurricane Irene and Earthquake, Washington’s Apocalypse This Time, King memorial dedication postponed, Congressman Goodlatte investigations?

From Time Aug. 26, 2011.

“The Storm After the Earthquake: Washington’s Apocalypse This Time”

“Washington is accustomed to turmoil (debt ceiling, health care reform, the occasional Supreme Court nomination) but rarely has a week here seemed so apocalyptic. First came Tuesday’s 5.8-magnitude earthquake, the first in more than a century, which cracked the Washington Monument’s top and sent the tip of one of the National Cathedral’s spires to the ground. Then, there were the aftershocks. Now comes Hurricane Irene.

The authorities expected Irene to arrive between North Carolina and the tidewater region of southern Virginia Friday night, with winds up to 110 miles-per-hour, before barreling up the Eastern Seaboard, toward Washington and New York, one of the continent’s most populous corridors. President Obama on Friday predicted the storm will be “extremely dangerous and costly,” and abruptly ended his family’s vacation on Martha’s Vineyard to return to the White House. In New York City, Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered the evacuation of some 270,000 residents of low-lying neighborhoods, and ordered the city’s public transportation system closed Saturday. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie urged residents along the Atlantic Coast to flee. Back in Washington, where Mayor Vincent Gray had yet to decide whether to declare a state of emergency Friday afternoon, the officials postponed Sunday’s scheduled dedication of the memorial to Martin Luther King Jr.

The authorities predicted floods exceeding four feet in low-lying tidal areas, particularly in Virginia, and they expect the evacuation routes to many coastal areas of North Carolina to be cut off. Janet Napolitano, the homeland security secretary, said Friday that officials had issue this ominous warning: “The window of preparation is quickly closing.””

“This weekend was to be celebratory, attracting thousands of people from across the country for concerts and a King memorial dedication speech by President Obama on Sunday, the 48th anniversary of the March on Washington. Late Thursday, the King memorial’s organizers announced they would postpone the dedication until September, or October.”

“He may have geography and physics to back him up, a bit. Washington is relatively far inland, and sits along the Potomac River, not the Atlantic Ocean where the risk of a storm surge is much higher. But the authorities say the risk of severe flooding within capital city is minimal. The greater threat is of wind uprooting trees from soil saturated by weeks of heavy rain.

Nevertheless, even in the marbled capital of the mighty United States of America, nothing quite puts fear in man as much as an act of God — especially if you think you can see it coming.”

Does Obama see this coming?

Congressman Bob Goodlatte has stated that Barack Obama will be investigated if enough evidence surfaces.

“As you know, President Obama recently released to the public the long-form version of his birth certificate. Since then, concerns have been raised about the validity of the birth certificate as well as the claim that the President has been using a Social Security Number previously issued to another person. These concerns have been raised with the relevant oversight committees in the Congress and if there is enough evidence and more experts reach the same conclusions then these claims will lead to an investigation.”

We have the evidence.

Hurricane Irene Outer Banks warning, 6 to 11 feet surge, Ocean Sound and Rain Water, Beach road and highway 158 will be under water

Hurricane Irene Outer Banks warning, 6 to 11 feet surge, Ocean Sound and Rain Water, Beach road and highway 158 will be under water

Hurricane Irene is headed straight for the Outer Banks of NC. The populated areas there are Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Duck and Corolla. I have been there many times during the past 15 years and I know the area well. Some stretches of this area, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and large sounds are approximately 1 and a half miles wide. None of this stretch is very wide.

I just checked the latest storm surge data from The Weather Channel. They are predicting a 6 to 11 foot storm surge for this area. I next went to Google Earth to confirm my memory of the elevations. I chose a spot in front of the Wright Brothers Memorial in Kill Devil Hills. I verified the elevation of the beach road, one block back from the ocean, and Highway 158 which runs parallel to the ocean several blocks from the ocean. Here are the elevations.

Beach Road    3 feet

Highway 158   6 feet

As you can see, a 11 foot storm surge will cover these roads. If you are in a cottage between highway 158 and the ocean, you could easily be in jeopardy. One large wave could wipe out your dwelling.

I have a family member at the Outer Banks and a friend who has a family member there indicated they are going to ride it out. I hear comments from people that they have always weathered the storms. This is a once in a lifetime event. You have never experienced a hurricane like this one going directly over the Outer Banks.

Kill Devil Hills is enacting a 10PM curfew beginning tonight until whenever.

Take this storm seriously!

Hurricane Irene projected path Friday August 26, 2011, Category 3, NC coast, Norfolk, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City, Hartford,  Boston

***  UPDATE BELOW  ***

From the Weather Channel August 26, 2011.

“Hurricane Irene, a large, powerful Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale, continues to plow through the northwest Bahamas, with the U.S. in its sights.

As you can see on our projected path map below, Hurricane Irene will be a very dangerous hurricane as it tracks along the East Coast this weekend. Anyone in the corridor from eastern North Carolina to the Northeast U.S. should be preparing for a hurricane!”

  • We’ve added an “EXTREME” threat level category from eastern North Carolina to southern New England. According to Hurricane Expert, Dr. Rick Knabb and Sr. Meteorologist, Stu Ostro, “this is a particularly threatening situation and it’s best for people to be on alert.
  • Computer models are currently trending toward a forecast solution of rare potency for portions of the Northeast.
  • Irene will be a serious and multi-hazard threat for the major metropolitan areas of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. This includes Norfolk, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City, Hartford, and Boston. This hurricane has the potential to produce flooding rains, high winds, downed trees (on houses, cars, power lines) and widespread power outages. Significant impacts along the immediate coast include high waves, surge and beach erosion.
  • For North Carolina, the main impacts of damaging winds and storm surge flooding will be confined to the far eastern portions of the state. In addition to the Outer Banks, this potentially includes Morehead City and Atlantic Beach.
  • Timing: Irene will make its closest approach to North Carolina late Friday night through Saturday. Northeast U.S. impacts would be Saturday night through early Monday.

We remain a couple of days away from Irene’s direct impacts along the US East Coast and critical uncertainties related to Irene’s exact track and intensity remain. Stay tuned to The Weather Channel and right here on weather.com for further updates.

The projected path of Hurricane Irene is more westerly than believed yesterday and is aimed right at Washington, DC.

Congressman Bob Goodlatte has stated that Barack Obama will be investigated if enough evidence surfaces.

“As you know, President Obama recently released to the public the long-form version of his birth certificate. We have the evidence.

Illinois July Job Losses leads nation, Obama cronies raise taxes and government spending, IL unemployment rate 9.5 percent

Illinois July Job Losses leads nation, Obama cronies raise taxes and government spending,  IL unemployment rate 9.5 percent

As Obama formulates another award winning solution for creating jobs, you know like the Stimulus Bill, Illinois, Obama’s home state, gained recognition recently for having the highest job losses in the nation.

From the Chicago Daily Observer August 23, 2011.

“Illinois Leads Nation in Jobs Losses”

“Nationally, lawmakers and economists are debating what policy changes will help the U.S. progress toward economic recovery. Here in Illinois, residents are getting a harsh lesson of what happens when taxes go up, government spending isn’t reformed and past-due bills continue to go unpaid.

Last week the Bureau of Labor Statistics delivered three pieces of bad news to Illinois:

The number of Illinoisans employed continues to fall.

Illinois lost more jobs during the month of July than any other state in the nation. After losing 7,200 jobs in June, Illinois lost an additional 24,900 non-farm payroll jobs in July.

The Illinois unemployment rate, which rose to 9.5 percent, now exceeds the national rate.
“The policies currently in place – higher taxes, more spending, and unreformed liabilities – are clearly not working for those who are struggling to make ends meet,” said Kristina Rasmussen, executive vice president at the Illinois Policy Institute. “A great starting place for lawmakers eager to create an atmosphere of job growth would be to repeal the recent income tax increase, which robs families and businesses of resources they could put to better use.””
