New York Reports Its First Swine Flu Death, May 17, 2009, assistant principal, New York City public school, Mitchell Wiener, experimental drug, Ribavirin, overwhelmed by the illness

From the NY Times, May 17, 2009:

“New York Reports Its First Swine Flu Death”

“An assistant principal at a New York City public school died of complications from swine flu in an intensive care unit of a Queens hospital on Sunday night, the first death in New York State of the flu strain that has swept across much of the world since it was first identified in April.”

“On Friday, Dr. Daniel Jernigan, head of flu epidemiology for the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said there had been 173 hospitalizations and 5 deaths reported to the agency. But he emphasized that most cases in the United States — possibly “upwards of 100,000” — were mild.”

““We are now seeing a rising tide of flu in many parts of New York City,” Dr. Frieden said. But he added: “Nothing we’ve seen so far suggests that it’s more dangerous to someone who gets it than the flu that comes every year. We should not forget that the flu that comes every year kills about 1,000 New Yorkers.”

Mr. Wiener, 55, had been “overwhelmed” by the illness, despite beginning a course of treatment with an experimental drug, Ribavirin, after he failed to respond to other antiviral drugs, according to Ole Pedersen, a spokesman for Flushing Hospital Medical Center, where Mr. Wiener had been a patient since Wednesday.”

“His wife, Bonnie, a reading teacher, blamed the city for failing to act sooner to close the school where she and her husband both worked. “I know we have a duty to educate the children of New York,” Ms. Wiener, who is not sick, said on Friday. But, she added, “something just doesn’t fit right.””

“A total of 105 students were documented with flulike illness at Middle School 158 in Bayside, Our Lady of Lourdes in Queens Village and a building in Flushing that houses three schools with a total of 1,320 students, including Intermediate School 25. All of the schools will be closed beginning Monday for at least five days, the department said.”

  1. Beware of Obama

How does an assistant principal die of this, if it originated in Mexico, and he never went there?

How many of his sutdents go to Mexico for spring break?

  2. I predict that this is just the warm up act. A test balloon if you will.

Kitty…..hope I wasn’t rude to you. I was having some SERIOUS hormonal issues last week.

I agree with you about some of these blogs. I posted a link to pictures of actual abortions on a site that had embedded a video of the 80 year old priest who was arrested for protesting at Notre Shame. I was shocked at how quickly I was attacked….even called an extremist by the blog owner! She brought the topic up by posting the video!

I told her that being “pro-choice” without ever having seen an actual abortion is like supporting the porkulous bill without having read it.

Needless to say that popular blog is off my favorites list now.

I have to agree with Jeff about abortion. It is evil in it’s rawest form. It’s acceptance is a sign of this country having lost it’s moral compass.

Guess waterboarding is not as palatable to these folks as abortion……WTH?

I believe the fact that people like this young man is making people jump out of their seats is a good indicator that our culture is not lost. People are not applauding some rapper with foul language; this is a sweet, innocent song , sung by an adorable happy, talented young man.

  6. Sandy…………… Read your comment ,and would like to add that over the last 30 years or more I have watched as the Christian values within the Catholic community has steadily deteriorated. This couples DIRECTLY to the deterioration of MORAL values in the US, and perhaps the world as a whole. It is a COMBINATION of factors that have caused the breakdown of our moral values. This seems to have occurred in all walks of life, and in all age groups. Sadly it is the breakdown of our moral values that WILL lead to the complete breakdown of our (alleged) society. I personally think that it might already be too late to stop the progress of this beast. After listening to the sickening speech of Father Jenkins at ND yesterday I find myself more apprehensive than ever before. I was both angered, and sickened by the words coming from someone who is supposed to be promoting the Catholic Doctrine. To me he is not worthy of the post that he occupies. It is my earnest hope that the Vatican will get involved in this. This all only adds to the already diminished position of the Catholic church resulting from the recent child molesting scandal which seriousl damaged the image of the Catholic church. Now we see others within the same entity Still doing deliberate harm to their own people in the name of PROGRESS. If this is an example of what the Catholic church is becoming then it won’t be long until it disappears completely. Secularism is getting stronger, as the strength of Christianity wanes. I personally believe that as human morality errodes, our society will deteriorate into a totally depraved, and diseased population, and will ultimately lead to the decline, and ending of our kind on Earth.

  7. So much for a massive outbreak. We should focus our efforts more on the outbreak of corruption in religions and governments.

I agree with everyone on here. Dr. Alan Keyes is the ONLY REAL candidate we have as President now. He doesn’t just talk. He ACTS!!! He is a true PATRIOT and a dead ringer for the next election!

I was hoping Dr. Keyes would have been accepted by the Constitution Party in 2008 but his belief in keeping soldiers abroad was a big rub for the party. I feel he may reconsider his idea and bring troops home. Should Alan finally be accepted into the home he belongs, the Constitution Party, we’re going to have a real Patriot and WINNER in the next election…if we have a next election.

Let’s all get behind Keyes and let him know we support him 110%. He is not alone in his endeavors.

    Oldsalt76.
    Well put.

  9. OldSalt, Years ago a friend sent me an article about the communist infiltrating the Catholic Church by means of the gay community & at the time I did not take it seriously. Now I realize there was a lot of truth to it. I actually witnessed it in the late ’60’s -a part of the Church being taken over by the left -the Berrigan Brothers & many others in the anti-war movement. But it isn’t just about infiltration -it is about others in authority who sat back & did nothing, except for Pope John Paul II.
My husband who is Jewish was completely outraged at ND having BO speak at the graduation. Many did speak out & demonstrate against this -so that is a good thing.
Do not lose hope for our culture (read my previous comment). Besides good signs in the entertainment field -I heard Judge Thomas comment on the fact that there are more Professors of Law teaching Originalism than ever before. We have more conservative talk shows than ever before. In the Fine Arts there is more classical realism as opposed to abstract(what the h… is it ?)
OldSalt speaking of art -could you recommend a good printer -a company of art prints?

  10. Old Salt…you hit the nail on the head.

Although I am not Catholic, I have always had great respect for the Catholic, what I consider our mother church. I am in awe of the beautiful services and the spirituality of the masses. That is why it’s watering down is so heartbreaking.

I remember what happened to the churches in Europe during WWII. They became arms of the state propaganda or else they were terrorized. Ministers were told what to tell their flock. They were asked to spy on them as well. Many Christians were jailed as a result, but many caved to the un-Christian government “requests.” The real church went underground.

The Catholic church today has caved to MUCH less pressure.

    Sad and shameful.

We, as Christians are supposed to be “in this world, not of this world.” SHAME on NOTRE DAME

  11. OldSalt,

I concur with your views. I might add one thing though. While it is true that secularism is rising, what is also rising is the fervor of ideologies, conveniently hiding behind traditional religious identifications.

The most worriesome of course, is the rise of Islam, not the traditional stream of course, which preaches nonviolence, but fanatic groups
    such as Hamas.

Hamas is now infiltrating Fatah for example.

That is what I keep telling you Jeff….it is about the candidate….not the party….so don’t oust out Republicans either if they are good for the country. I did vote for Keyes last time and will again no matter which party…..I just wish it was the Republican party he ran with because of the older people who vote strictly party no matter who the candidate and are ingrained with the two party system!

  13. i was able to read the article regarding the assistant principal being affected with swine flu but i didn’t realize that he ended his life quickly. i heard some of my friends not afraid of this virus, but i myself is very very scared of it so i always make sure that me and my family get the utmost protection.

  14. Sorry, off topic, but this just popped up.

I’ve been thinking for quite a while that just one little thing will bring The One down.

Could this possibly be it? It has a big mouth and its foot always seems to be firmly planted in there:

    http://hotair.com/archives/2009/05/16/good-news-genius-vp-announces-existence-of-secret-bunker/

    Let us pray….

  15. I am puzzled about the death of the Vice Principal also. Fox News today did comment
on the VP having had gout and that gout lowers
the immune system and also damages the kidneys. Other comments stated that he had
    no pre-existing conditions. Still puzzling.

  16. Hi Kitty Kat–glad to see you. What was the subject matter that kept you away? Just wondering. I had that feeling on another blog, but it was visited by too many obots who were down right nasty. I think all of us are on the edge on a daily basis due to the usurper still being in the White House—we just can’t wait for him to leave!

    PATRIOTS SHOUT OUT—NOW!

  17. Old Salt 76 —

Remember the last Chapter of Revelation —

    “Jesus Wins!”

  18. Sandy, the owner of the blog to which you refer in your comments above posted the topic of police arrests of protesters at Notre Dame, including a 78-year-old Catholic priest. She explicitly asked readers not to convert the topic into diatribes on abortion. You not only ignored her initial request, which she repeated, but you also posted what you describe are “actual” pictures of abortions. You violated the cardinal rule of blogs: stay on topic (unless the thread is open). For this reason, you were sanctioned.

Plus, on this blog, you sanctimoniously justify your misconduct by self-righteously proclaiming you violated the terms of the blog because the blog owner, avowedly pro-choice, needed to see these pictures you posted to know what she was talking about (as if she had never seen such pictures before?). But remember, she was not talking about abortion; she was talking about peaceful protesters, including an elderly priest, being arrested.

Next time you misrepresent either your motives or the response to those motives, you might keep in mind that several other people like me troll these blogs, trying to keep people like you, honest.

  19. Beware of Obama

I am not so sure about Alan Keyes as a president. He has ties to the same internationalists as Obama. We need rather a true blue American who is opposed in principle and openly to the NWO and to the trilateral council, the council of foreign relations and the bilderburgers…anyone who is not cannot be trusted and will turn out to be an enemy of American sovreignty and the people’s liberty

  20. Hi Sandy,
I hope you are watching Greta V.S. tonight–she’s
SHOWING the protesters and the commencement (inside building) protesters also.
Greta is at least better on this— 40 people were
arrested for standing up. These are the true
heroes, like we said over the weekend, Dr. Keyes
and the students and priests and protesters who
stood up should have been recognized for their
anti-abortion stance. Obama is a hypocrite–
his words do NOT match his actions.

    PATRIOTS SHOUT!!!

  21. Why is Mr. Soetoro so easily pro-abortion??
Killing babies and killing people—Does he
    have a link to both????
