From the Greensboro News Record November 3, 2014.

“Two under voluntary quarantine in Guilford County

Two people in Guilford County are under voluntary quarantine while county health officials monitor them for symptoms of Ebola. The individuals have not come in contact with other people who have the disease or demonstrated any symptoms of Ebola. They are being monitored because the federal government mandates the oversight for those who arrive in the United States from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, County Medical Director Laura Bachmann said Monday.

“I think it’s good for people to remember that this is not an easy virus to get,” Bachmann said. “It takes direct contact with infected blood or other bodily fluids.”

Health workers are contacting the two people daily, Bachmann said.

The news comes a day after state health officials announced that Duke University Hospital had admitted a patient who showed Ebola symptoms. On Monday morning, health officials released results of an Ebola test that showed the patient at Duke did not have Ebola.

That patient will undergo another test Wednesday morning, officials said during a conference call Monday. Duke University Hospital doctors will determine when the patient might be released.

Three family members are serving a voluntary 21-day quarantine in the Person County home that the patient traveled to on Saturday.”

“County health officials have the authority to quarantine patients, Ellington said, but prefer to ask patients to quarantine themselves by choosing not to go out in public or taking public transportation.

The two people whom Guilford County is monitoring are cooperating fully with the voluntary quarantine, Guilford County Public Health Director Merle Green said.”

“National Nurse Survey Shows Hospitals Still Not Prepared for U.S. Ebola Patients

RNRN Press Release, 10/3/14

Contact Information | Media Center

80% SAY THEIR HOSPITAL HAS NOT PROVIDED POLICY FOR ADMISSION OF POTENTIAL INFECTED PATIENTS

Following reports that a Dallas hospital failed to hospitalize a patient infected with the Ebola virus and failed to properly communicate essential information to caregivers about his health status, National Nurses United is stepping up the call on U.S. hospitals to immediately upgrade emergency preparations for Ebola in the U.S.

Several weeks ago, National Nurses United began surveying registered nurses across the U.S. about emergency preparedness.  Most of the nurses are telling NNU that their hospital is not prepared for the Ebola virus.

In updated preliminary results from nearly 700 RNs at over 250 hospitals in 31 states released Friday:

  • 80 percent say their hospital has not communicated to them any policy regarding potential admission of patients infected by Ebola
  • 87 percent say their hospital has not provided education on Ebola with the ability for the nurses to interact and ask questions
  • One-third say their hospital has insufficient supplies of eye protection (face shields or side shields with goggles) and fluid resistant/impermeable gowns
  • Nearly 40 percent say their hospital does not have plans to equip isolation rooms with plastic covered mattresses and pillows and discard all linens after use, less than 10 percent said they were aware their hospital does have such a plan in place
  • More than 60 percent say their hospital fails to reduce the number of patients they must care for to accommodate caring for an “isolation” patient

NNU is calling for all U.S. hospitals to immediately implement a full emergency preparedness plan for Ebola, or other disease outbreaks. That includes:

  • Full training of hospital personnel along with proper protocols and training materials for responding to outbreaks,
  • Adequate supplies of Hazmat suits and other personal protective equipment
  • Properly equipped isolation rooms to assure patient, visitor and staff safety,
  • Sufficient staffing to supplement nurses and other health workers who need to care for patients in isolation.

At a rally of 1,000 nurses last week in Las Vegas, “we warned that it was just a matter of time in an interconnected world that we would see Ebola in the U.S. Now, everyone should recognize that Texas is not an island either, and as we’ve heard from nurses across the U.S., hospitals here are not ready to confront this deadly disease,” said NNU executive director RoseAnn DeMoro.”

“Ebola in the U.S.: Stricter travel quarantine practices dropped by Obama admin. in 2010

Many health and transportation officials are calling for stricter quarantine practices in response to the growing threat of the deadly Ebola virus being carried in by travelers from West Africa, but in 2010 the Obama Administration scrapped a set of regulations that might have prevented the disease from entering the U.S.

Bush administration proposals in response to the avian flu crisis in 2005 would have granted the federal government the power to detain sick airline passengers, USA Today reported in 2010.

The regulations also would have required airlines to report sick passengers to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and mandated that airlines collect passenger contact information in case flyers needed to be tracked down as part of an outbreak investigation.”

“Now the threat of Ebola has prompted lawmakers and transportation officials to call for travel bans on flights coming in from West African countries stricken by the disease.

“We should stop accepting flights from countries that are Ebola stricken,” Louisiana Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal said in a statement Friday. “Even countries in Africa have cut back on or stopped accepting flights from countries with Ebola outbreaks.””

“Miles: 5 DISD students possibly exposed to Ebola”

“The sister of the first Ebola patient diagnosed in the United States says her brother told relatives that he had notified officials the first time he went to the hospital that he was visiting from Liberia.

Mai Wureh says her brother, Thomas Eric Duncan, went to a Dallas emergency room on Friday and they sent him home with antibiotics. He told his sister hospital officials asked for his Social Security number and he said that he didn’t have one because he was visiting from Liberia.

In a news conference Wednesday, Dr. Mark Lester confirmed that a nurse asked Duncan on his first visit whether he had been in an area affected by the Ebola outbreak that has killed thousands in West Africa.

“A checklist was in place for Ebola in this hospital for several weeks. That checklist was utilized by the nurse, who did ask [the] question [if the patient had been to Africa,]” Lester said. “[…] Regretfully, that information [was not shared] with the full team.”

As the medical team assessed Duncan on his first visit, they thought it was a low-grade viral disease. Dr. Edward Goodman, a Texas Health Presbyterian infectious disease specialist, said when Duncan went to the emergency room Friday he was not vomiting or having diarrhea, but he did have a fever and some abdominal pain.”

“Dallas ISD superintendent Mike Miles also revealed that five children from four of the district’s campuses were possibly exposed to the virus.

Miles identified the schools as:

Conrad High School
Tasby Middle School
Hotchkiss Elementary School
Dan D. Rogers Elementary School
Tasby Middle School shares a campus with Jack Lowe Sr. Elementary School, but DISD officials say there are no students at Lowe Elementary who were directly exposed to Duncan.”

From The Daily Beast October 1, 2014.

“The CDC Was Wrong About How to Stop Ebola”

“News that a man has been diagnosed with the virus in Dallas days after arriving from Liberia is alarming—and to prevent more U.S. cases, certain rules must never be broken.

The announcement that a case of Ebola virus has been diagnosed in a Dallas hospital sent a chill through the medical, public health, and basic citizen communities. I know my jaw surely dropped as far as it has dropped since 2001, when the word of the first anthrax case in New York appeared in my email. As the details have begun to emerge, many people are wondering the same thing: Will this happen in my city?

The answer is quite clear: Maybe.

The facts are straightforward, at least in the version that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention laid out: A man of uncertain age flew from Liberia, where the disease remains uncontrolled, to Dallas to visit family. When checked for illness on departure, he had no fever. Upon landing in Texas on September 20, he was fine. Within four days, though, he began to feel ill—sufficiently so that he sought medical attention on September 26. That evaluation apparently failed to provide clues to the diagnosis, but two days later his symptoms had progressed enough that he again sought medical attention and this time was hospitalized, placed immediately into isolation, and diagnosed on September 30.

The timeline as presented raises countless questions. First: Was he contagious when boarding the plane and are his plane-mates therefore at risk? Surely not—the most compelling epidemiological fact in the entire tragic seven month outbreak has been the story of Patrick Sawyer, the Minnesotan who after traveling from Liberia to Nigeria, developed symptoms of overwhelming Ebola and died soon thereafter. Although few details have been revealed, none of those who traveled with Sawyer developed the disease despite the fact that he, unlike the Dallas case, was ill with the infection while traveling. And it is axiomatic (and hopefully true) that a person is contagious only when they are sick, not when they are brewing the infection.

Second: What about others? Surely others in Texas were exposed and are at risk—specifically those the new case spent time with from September 26, when he first felt ill, until September 28, when he was hospitalized and placed promptly into isolation. Here is where the CDC’s calm and forceful “Nothing to See Here” message cracks a bit around the edges.”

“‘About 20′ cases of polio-like illness found in California”

“About 20″ cases of a polio-like syndrome have been identified in California children over the past 18 months, a Stanford University researcher says.
Dr. Keith Van Haren, a pediatric neurologist at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, has written a report about five of the early cases.

In that report, which will be presented in April at the American Academy of Neurology’s annual meeting, neurologists said they had identified five patients who developed paralysis in one or more of their limbs between August 2012 and July 2013. All five children had been vaccinated against the poliovirus. Treatment did not seem to help the children regain their motor function.

Samples from two of those children tested positive for enterovirus 68, a rare virus that has been linked to severe respiratory illness in the past.”

From CNN September 29, 2014.

“CDC investigates kids’ limb paralysis; is enterovirus to blame?”

” Health officials are looking for the cause of a neurologic illness that’s affected 10 children in Colorado.
The children were hospitalized between August 9 and September 28 with muscle weakness in their limbs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Something is affecting the children’s motor nerves, causing weakness primarily in their shoulders, triceps, biceps and hips, says Dr. Joyce Oleszek, a pediatric rehabilitation specialist at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Doctors are also seeing some weakness in the neck and facial muscles in these patients.

“It seems to be attacking the spinal cord and brain stem,” Oleszek said at a press conference Monday.

MRI tests spotted abnormalities in the children’s spinal gray matter. Most of the children experienced a respiratory illness before being admitted to the hospital, although only two had a history of asthma.

The latest case was a girl who arrived at Children’s Hospital Colorado over the weekend. She and three of the other patients are still at the hospital. The rest have been discharged, said Dr. Sam Dominguez, a microbial epidemiologist at the hospital. Doctors do not know if the neurological damage will be permanent.

The CDC is investigating the cause of these symptoms. Health officials do not believe that the cases were caused by polio, as at least eight of the 10 children are up to date on their polio vaccinations.

“We don’t know, at this point, if there is any association between the enterovirus EV-D68 that’s circulating and the paralytic conditions some of the children in Colorado are experiencing,” CDC spokesman Tom Skinner said.

Tests of the children’s cerebrospinal fluid came back negative for enteroviruses and West Nile virus. But a test of their nasal passages found enterovirus in six out of eight patients who were tested.

Of those six, four tested positive for enterovirus D68, which has been sending children across North America to the hospital with severe respiratory illnesses. The other two test results are pending.”

From the NY Times September 22, 2014.

“New figures published Monday by the World Health Organization reveal a far worse outlook than it had previously anticipated for the Ebola epidemic in West Africa.

In addition to predicting many more cases and deaths, the new report for the first time raises the possibility that the epidemic will not be brought under control and that the disease will become endemic in West Africa, meaning that it could reach a steady state and become a constant presence there.

“The epidemiologic outlook is bleak,” the report said.

If control does not improve now, there will be more than 20,000 cases by Nov. 2, and the numbers of cases and deaths will continue increasing from hundreds to thousands per week for months to come, according to the report. The death rate is about 70 percent in each of the heavily affected countries, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The new estimates were published online in The New England Journal of Medicine by a team of more than 50 scientists. An earlier prediction by the health organization was far less dire, saying there might be 20,000 cases in nine months.”

“So far, there have been 5,843 cases, including 2,803 deaths, with the most cases, 3,022, reported by Liberia. But the scientists say it is likely that many cases have not been detected.

Although researchers are scrambling to produce and test drugs to treat the disease and vaccines to prevent it, the report says they are unlikely to be available for months — and have not yet been fully tested in humans.

An editorial in the same journal called the epidemic “an avoidable crisis,” and faulted a “highly inadequate and late global response” for letting it surge out of control. It was written by Dr. Jeremy J. Farrar of the Wellcome Trust, and Dr. Peter Piot of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Dr. Piot helped discover the Ebola virus in 1976.”

From ABC News September 15, 2014.

“Respiratory Virus, Enterovirus D68, Likely Infected Thousands But Just Tip of Iceberg

The respiratory virus that’s been sweeping the nation and sending asthmatic children to the hospital may have only been officially reported in 97 children, but experts say that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Dr. Claudia Hoyen said the virus, called enterovirus D68, probably affected thousands of children — and that’s just in Cleveland, where she works. The virus has been reported in 21 states, according to state health departments.

At UH Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, about 20 children normally go to the intensive care unit each month with respiratory symptoms, said Hoyen, who heads the hospital’s pediatric infection control program. But for the last two months, the hospital’s intensive care unit has treated 80 children per month, she said.

“That’s fourfold over what we would normally get,” Hoyen said.”

“The rare enterovirus starts out like the common cold but can quickly turn more serious — especially in children with asthma. Enteroviruses often appear in the summer and fall, but an outbreak like this hasn’t occurred since the 1960s, Hoyen said.”

Obama opened the floodgates on thousands of illegal aliens and ignored the warnings from healthcare professionals to screen them for disease.

Now he is going to expose thousands of of US soldiers to the Ebola virus which has the potential to expose millions of American civilians to it.

So this is the plan for FEMA camps and Obama martial law.

Sounds more possible now doesn’t it.

Hand, foot and mouth disease is a common malady in the US.

Is it more common now with the spread of illegal alien children in this country?

Lest you believe that the disease is not serious.

From the CDC.

“Individual cases and outbreaks of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) occur around the world. In countries with temperate (varying) climates, cases occur more often in the spring to fall.

Since 1997, large outbreaks of HFMD caused by enterovirus 71 have been reported mostly in children in east and Southeast Asia. In these outbreaks, most children have typical symptoms of HFMD and recover without health complications. However, a small number of people with this disease develop severe complications requiring hospitalization or even causing death.”

From The Disease Daily April 17, 2009.

“Over 125,000 cases, and 57 fatalities of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) have been reported by China’s Ministry of Health so far this year. It is estimated that 95% of cases of HFMD have been in children less than 5 years old living in the most rural parts of the country. Regions reporting the greatest number of cases include Henan, Shandong, Jiangsu, Guangxi, Anhui, Guangdong, Hebei, Hubei, Hunan, and Zhejiang, all within China’s agricultural belt where healthcare is minimal. Continuing problems, such as the lack of HFMD prevention training for rural doctors, and the existing fear that government officials are hiding the problem and number of deaths, plague the provinces most severely affected. In addition, with the outbreak not expected to peak until May-July, it is likely that the number of cases and fatalities will rise.”

This is the first time it’s caused such widespread misery, and it seems to be particularly hard on the lungs.”
“What’s unusual about this one is that it’s a virus that hasn’t widely spread through the U.S. before.”

“From AliPac September 4, 2014.
“Three months ago, people like Dr. Jane Orient, myself and anonymous Border Patrol agents began to call for quarantine, for the purpose of health screening all immigrants. Many people laughed and said there was no real threat. The invasion of our country, the very invasion that people said was not real, has just endangered the entire country. We are sitting on the beginning of a series of pandemic outbreaks.

Prominent Health Officials Have Called for Quarantining All Illegal Immigrants for Health Reasons

In June, one of Arizona’s most prominent physicians, Dr. Jane Orient, called for proper health screening as she thought the unbridled and unconditioned entry of illegal immigrants into the country was problematic.

Dr. Austin King, head of the Texas Medical Association, is now calling out Texas Governor Rick Perry and President Barrack Obama to allow doctors to screen all of the unaccompanied children who have been coming across the border from Honduras and El Salvador. The President has remained silent with regard to the request.

Dr. King expressed the view that in order for more doctors to go down to the border, emergency funding would likely need to be approved, and ICE would have to change some policies in order to allow everyone coming across to be screened.

Dr. Elizabeth Lee Vliet, a prominent preventive medicine physician, who previously served as the former Director of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, stated that “Legal immigrants are required to pay for medical exams and screening tests conducted by approved physicians before they arrive here. They’re not arriving in the U.S. carrying diseases, and then being dispersed into cities across the nation.” The CDC acknowledges this very fact on their website. Vliet further stated that the CDC’s own guidelines are clearly being violated with regards to the illegal immigrants currently crossing the border.”

Enterovirus D68 is supposedly a non polio form of enterovirus.

However

From CNN February 25, 2014.

“‘About 20’ cases of polio-like illness found in California”

“About 20” cases of a polio-like syndrome have been identified in California children over the past 18 months, a Stanford University researcher says.

Samples from two of those children tested positive for enterovirus 68, a rare virus that has been linked to severe respiratory illness in the past. Samples from the other three children were not collected or tested soon enough to yield conclusive results, said Dr. Emmanuelle Waubant, a neurologist at the University of California, San Francisco.

“About 20 cases have been identified in the U.S. so far, all in California, and all occurring in the past 18 months,” Van Haren said in an online posting Monday on the hospital’s website.

Sofia Jarvis is one of the children affected. Her mother, Jessica Tomei, told reporters Monday night the family is speaking out to raise awareness of the condition.
Sofia experienced what doctors thought was asthma and spent four days in the hospital, her mother said. As the family was leaving a follow-up pediatrician visit, Sofia reached for a toy out of the doctor’s “treasure box.” “I saw her left hand, mid-grasp, stop working,” her mother said.

“We did not realize what we were in store for,” Tomei said. Sofia, who had received a polio vaccination, had spinal cord inflammation, and her left arm is permanently paralyzed.

The paralysis surfaced at age 2, according to Stanford. Sofia is now 4.”

“The department “is taking these reports very seriously,” Van Haren said.

The phenomenon, he added, is not entirely new, as similar outbreaks have been seen across the world.

The poliovirus has been eradicated in the United States for more than 30 years. Only three countries in the world are not yet free of the disease: Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria, according to the World Health Organization.

Why polio hasn’t gone away yet

Poliovirus is part of the Picornaviridae family, which also includes enteroviruses and rhinoviruses (better known as the common cold). There are more than 100 types of enterovirus that cause 10 million to 15 million infections in the United States each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Most people who become infected with an enterovirus do not get sick or experience only mild symptoms, said Dr. Steven Oberste, chief of the Polio and Picornavirus Laboratory Branch at the CDC. Common symptoms include fever, runny nose, cough, skin rash and body aches.

Enterovirus is often the cause of “summer colds,” whose cases spike in July, August and September. Children and teens are more likely to fall ill because they have not yet built up immunity to these common viruses.

However, some types of enterovirus are more serious. These can cause hand, foot and mouth disease; viral meningitis; encephalitis (inflammation of the brain); an infection of the heart; and paralysis in some patients.

Enterovirus 68 was first identified in a California lab in 1962 after four children came down with a severe respiratory illness. Between 1970 and 2005, only 26 cases of enterovirus 68 in the United States were reported to the CDC. Since 2000, the government agency has kept a closer watch and has seen 47 cases, Oberste said. Outbreaks have occurred over the years in Asia and Europe, but it’s still one of the rarest types of enterovirus.”

“Was Loretta Fuddy’s plane fueled or fuel tainted in Molokai?”…Citizen Wells

“Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows.”…George Orwell, “1984″

From the Honolulu Star Advertiser June 9, 2014.
“Loretta Fuddy’s brother sues over fatal crash”
“An engine manufacturer in Canada is to blame for a small plane’s ocean landing and the death of Hawaii’s former health director, her brother said in a lawsuit filed Monday.

Lewis Fuddy Jr. is suing Pratt & Whitney Canada Corp. and Makani Kai Air Charters over the Dec. 11 crash-landing. His 65-year-old sister Loretta Fuddy was a passenger on the flight and died of an irregular heartbeat, police said, that was triggered when the plane lost power and crash-landed off the Hawaiian island of Molokai in December.

The pilot and seven other passengers on the Makani Kai Air flight survived without major injuries.

Pratt & Whitney knew about a tendency of turbine blades to stretch when heated, which causes the engine to lose power, the lawsuit says. “This created an unreasonable risk that the turbine blades would come into contact with the engine shroud and cause the engine to seize,” the lawsuit says.

A spokeswoman for Pratt & Whitney said she would refer The Associated Press’ request for comment to the appropriate company officials. Makani Kai owner Richard Schuman said he wasn’t aware of the lawsuit.

Schuman has said previously that he has no idea why the engine failed. The plane had no previous problems, he said.

The National Transportation Safety Board has yet to release its full report on the crash, with probable cause and recommendations. A preliminary NTSB report largely confirmed previous accounts by passengers and the plane’s pilot that they heard a loud bang, then the plane lost power. Pilot Clyde Kawasaki glided the single-engine Cessna into the water.”

Will the Will Pratt & Whitney defense team allege tainted fuel?

Water in the fuel tank?

I would.

It has happened before.

From Citizen Wells January 14, 2014.

“The easiest way to sabotage the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan that Loretta Fuddy was traveling in or any other plane is to taint the fuel. Intentially or unintentially.

It has happened before.

This can cause a crash without tampering with the engine.

Consider the following case from 1985.

“A single-engine plane whose crash killed the pilot and 16 skydivers carried contaminated fuel and may have been overloaded, the federal aviation investigators said Monday.

A black discoloration was found in the right fuel tank of the Cessna 208 Caravan, said Jim Burnett, chairman of the National Transportation safety Board. Investigators did not know what had contaminated the fuel, or its source, he said.”

From the AOPA, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, 1996.

“Aircraft misfueled in Fayetteville, North Carolina

Seventy-seven aircraft were fueled with 100LL that was tainted with jet fuel at Metro Air Center at North Carolina’s Fayetteville Regional Airport between February 10 and 15. Local police and FBI officials were investigating to determine whether the mixing of the two fuels was accidental or intentional.

At least one pilot was forced to return to the airport with engine trouble after refueling from a fuel truck, the Fayetteville Observer-Times reported.

The contamination was traced to a single fuel truck at Metro Air Center, the only refueling operation at the airport. It did not appear that the fuel farm was contaminated. Airport commissioners were told recently that Metro Air Center has now changed fuel ports on the top of its refueling trucks so that they will accept only a certain size nozzle, and the company is now locking openings on fuel trucks.”
