Janet Yellen employment concerns, NY Times protects Obama, Chicago Suntimes Philadelphia Fed and Duke Fuqua School of Business blame Obamacare for unemployment and part time jobs

“Over the last six months, of the net job creation, 97 percent of that is part-time work,”…Keith Hall, former BLS chief

“Nearly half of U.S. companies are reluctant to hire full-time employees because of the ACA. One in five firms indicates they are likely to hire fewer employees, and another one in 10 may lay off current employees in response to the law.

Other firms will shift toward part-time workers. More than 40 percent of CFOs say their companies will consider switching some jobs to less than 30 hours per week or targeting part-time workers for future employment.”…Duke University Fuqua School of Business December 11, 2013

“Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows.”…George Orwell, “1984″

Janet Yellen, despite the fact she has tap danced around the real employment problems in this county, today in Jackson Hole did address some of the problems with employment in this country.

“Consider first the behavior of the labor force participation rate, which has declined substantially since the end of the recession even as the unemployment rate has fallen. As a consequence, the employment-to-population ratio has increased far less over the past several years than the unemployment rate alone would indicate, based on past experience. For policymakers, the key question is: What portion of the decline in labor force participation reflects structural shifts and what portion reflects cyclical weakness in the labor market? If the cyclical component is abnormally large, relative to the unemployment rate, then it might be seen as an additional contributor to labor market slack.

Labor force participation peaked in early 2000, so its decline began well before the Great Recession. A portion of that decline clearly relates to the aging of the baby boom generation. But the pace of decline accelerated with the recession. As an accounting matter, the drop in the participation rate since 2008 can be attributed to increases in four factors: retirement, disability, school enrollment, and other reasons, including worker discouragement.8 Of these, greater worker discouragement is most directly the result of a weak labor market, so we could reasonably expect further increases in labor demand to pull a sizable share of discouraged workers back into the workforce.”

The NY Times, as it often has, reports on the Yellen speech and quotes one of the most ludicrous papers as an excuse for the lack of employment.

I was just going to pull up the NY Times Yellen article from this afternoon and got this message:

“The requested URL “http://www.nytimes.com/” cannot be found or is not available. Please check the spelling or try again later.”

I will try again later.

***  Update 7:03 PM article back up ***

“Ms. Yellen’s optimism that Fed policy can increase employment and wages is also challenged by a growing body of economic literature purporting to show that the decline of employment is caused largely by factors that predate the recession, and that cannot be addressed by continuing to hold down interest rates.

The economists Stephen J. Davis, of the University of Chicago, and John Haltiwanger, of the University of Maryland, argued in a paper presented Friday at the conference that employment had declined because the labor market has stagnated in recent decades. Fewer people are leaving or losing jobs, and fewer are taking new ones.

“These results,” they wrote, “suggest the U.S. economy faced serious impediments to high employment rates well before the Great Recession, and that sustained high employment is unlikely to return without restoring labor market fluidity.”

DURHAM, N.C. — A significant percentage of U.S. chief financial officers indicate that because of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), they may reduce employment growth at their firms and shift toward part-time workers.

A majority of finance chiefs also believe the full Social Security retirement age should be raised to help close the budget shortfall.

Despite these issues, underlying economic conditions are expected to improve in 2014 and, except in Europe, corporate charitable giving remains strong

These are some of the findings from the latest Duke University/CFO Magazine Global Business Outlook Survey, which concluded Dec. 5. The survey has been conducted for 71 consecutive quarters and spans the globe, making it the world’s longest running and most comprehensive research on senior finance executives. Presented results are for U.S. firms unless otherwise noted.

Nearly half of U.S. companies are reluctant to hire full-time employees because of the ACA.
One in five firms indicates they are likely to hire fewer employees, and another one in 10 may lay off current employees in response to the law.

Other firms will shift toward part-time workers. More than 40 percent of CFOs say their companies will consider switching some jobs to less than 30 hours per week or targeting part-time workers for future employment.”

From the Philadelphia Fed August 2014.

“In special questions this month, firms were asked qualitative questions about the effects of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and how, if at all, they are making changes to their employment and compensation, including benefits (see Special Questions). Over 18 percent of the firms indicated that the number of workers they employ was lower because of the ACA; 3 percent indicated higher levels. The same percentage (18 percent) indicated that the proportion of part-time workers had increased. Regarding health insurance benefit coverage, 41 percent said their coverage was unchanged, but 52 percent indicated modifications to their offerings. Among those modifying their health insurance coverage, higher deductibles (91 percent), higher worker contributed premiums (88 percent), and higher out-of-pocket maximums (77 percent) were the most cited changes.”

From the Chicago SunTimes August 21, 2014.

“Thanks a lot, Obama.

Add the Affordable Care Act – or, specifically, the big-business Cubs’ response to it – to the causes behind Tuesday night’s tarp fiasco and rare successful protest by the San Francisco Giants.

The staffing issues that hamstrung the grounds crew Tuesday during a mad dash with the tarp under a sudden rainstorm were created in part by a wide-ranging reorganization last winter of game-day personnel, job descriptions and work limits designed to keep the seasonal workers – including much of the grounds crew – under 130 hours per month, according to numerous sources with direct knowledge.

That’s the full-time worker definition under “Obamacare,” which requires employer-provided healthcare benefits for “big businesses” such as a major league team.”

  1. So much for counting on any cooperation of “moderate” Sunnis:

Horror! 70 Sunnis Shot Dead During Iraqi Mosque Attack

Shiite militiamen gunned down 70 people in an apparent revenge attack at an Iraqi Sunni mosque Friday, dealing a blow to government efforts to regain territory seized by jihadist-led militants.

The shooting in Diyala province will increase already significant anger among Iraq’s Sunni Arab minority with the Shiite-led government, undermining an anti-militant drive that ultimately requires Sunni cooperation to succeed.

Gowdy hires retired Army 3-star for Benghazi probe
The former top lawyer for the Army will be chief counsel for Republicans on the House committee investigating the 2012 terrorist attacks in Benghazi, Libya.
This is great news and in line with Gowdy’s quality and reputation.
I know it’s wishful thinking, but I wonder if the usurpers’ ID has anything to do with the choice of a military man as chief counsel in the Benghazi investigation.

  3. Observer……..
The Sunnis don’t want the US in IRAQ,yet they want our help in stopping the SHI# Muslims. So I would say to them Then fight your own battles BYE BYE. I think the only reason why the US IS doing some of the fighting from the air,is that the INSANE JIHADI GOAT LOVERS will soon be attempting to do the same thing in the US,and we have a hell of a lot of SHI# muslims right in Dearborn ,Mich. I have a gut feeling that eventually we will see the bastards in Dearborn turn into an ARMY of JIHADIS………LOCK, LOAD, AND PREPARE TO FIRE! One round one kill!

  4. Once again Al DULL-TON was being televised as he tried to verbally stir up more problems in Ferguson. I think that if Dull-ton thought he could get away with it he would have the officer, and his family, dragged from their home, and MURDERED without trial. The fund for the officer is really growing now very close to $250,000.00. Michael’s buddy has still again changed his story, and the TWISTED eye witnesses are trying to say that the officer was NOT INJURED at all. They think that they know more than the doctors, and the xray technicians. This is being said by people many of whom tried to say they were EYE WITNESSES. Several have been proven to have been over 25 miles away. There are not many living HUMANKIND who can see over the horizon.(Horizon in flat ground=5 mile radius.)

  5. Bob Strauss……..
In reading between the lines of the stuff coming from the Pentagon, there is an increasing anger with the WACKEY HOUSE. Soetoro is now out on a really flimsey limb.It is PLAIN that he is SUPPORTING the SHI# muslims. Remember his words.” when the political winds shift in an ugly direction I will stand with the Muslims”. Allegedly Soetoro’s own words.

“Lack of mobility key to labor market woes: Jackson Hole paper”

“A key reason that the labor market is weak is that Americans are not moving as much as they used to in order to find work, according to a paper presented at the Federal Reserve’s Jackson Hole summit.

The thesis, presented by Steven Davis, a professor at the University of Chicago, supports the view of hawks on the Fed who argue that remaining weakness in U.S. labor markets is due to factors out of the control of monetary policy.”

I’m back in Tennessee as of last week due to job cuts. Back on the market – again.

  11. WILLIAM……

Sorry to hear that William…I hope you search isn’t a long one….

  12. I lifted this from the Norwood Tea Party sight this am………

“Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.”
    –John F. Kennedy
    How true John…how true.
I feel that John Kennedy is somewhere (upstairs or downstairs) laughing his a$$ off at “just how dumb” the American people have become in the last 50 years.

It only take ONE generation of people to change a country from one form of government to another.

  13. Good morning CW and all….a little humor to start the day…..

that bra can’t support this and neither can I

  14. RMINNC…….
John Kennedy was the VERY LAST DEMOCRAT that I voted for. Sadly niow if you vote Republican you are still voting for the same DUMB policies.

Could that be the “YO MAMA” we keep hearing about everytime a black punk opens his mouth. “F— YO MAMA” could that actually be her name?. If she is who they are referring to I think their choice of amorous behavior could be a bit better. Of course I keep in mind that many of those who make the verbal reference have in the past actually F-ed their OWN MAMA.anyway. Does that qualify them as MOTHERTRUCKERS?

  16. William……
Good morning, saddened to hear about your vacation. I am looking for continued deterioration in American business. The left LOONIES think the economy is really improving……how disconnected from reality can people get? Well sir here is the classic example……. No market for a product,no production,no production NO JOBS. Yet the NITWITS among us think jobs just materialise out of thin air, when a button is pushed, and VOILA……instant job, doing NOTHING,and collecting a CEOs salary, while so doing. It would probably take another WW to end the mess we now have…..just as WW2 ended the mess of the 1930s. Sadly it cost a hell of a lot of lives. But the GAME OF WAR is all about ATTRITION,and before a war of attrition can move forward there must be production of war materials. WW2 was kept alive by the WIVES and mothers of the fighting men. They worked in defense plants, and grew victory gardens, and bought Defense bonds. Further we and the Allies were victorous, because we UNITED and became the MAJORITY,with SUPERIORITY on the battlefield. Once the German retreat began it never stopped.

  17. OLDSAILOR82…..good morning my friend….

All of this brought to you this morning by your neighborhood Walmart.

Yes that could be the “YO MAMA” they all want to talk about……I really don’t know…for some reason, they all look and LOOT (that is not misspelled) the same too me….Just look at all the LOOT she is carting out of our favorite store.

As for her being a ‘MOTHERTRUCKER” that’s a 10-4 good buddy, keep trucking….she sure has a big set of headlights too….or are they FOG lights?…they seem to be adjusted too low to the ground to be headlights.

This YO MAMA would put a Wisconsin dairy cow to shame.

YO MAMA’s are real big MOTHERTRUCKER’s when it comes to fog lights..

However, she looks like she got her FOG lights stuck in a 220 electrical outlet from the looks of her beautiful black hairy mop !

That’s a real cute star she’s wearing though…..the kind Madonna would just love to wear.

  18. Is it possible that Obama could suffer a nervous breakdown?
Lot’s of pressure on him right now……

Following was reported last year False or True?

On 20 September 2013, the National Report published an article (“President Obama Reported Sedated Following Emotional Breakdown”) positing that President Obama had been sedated by doctors following a “mental breakdown”:
Late this afternoon White House insiders leaked information stating the president has suffered a mental breakdown and is presently resting and under a doctors care. This afternoon the National Report received three calls on our nationwide hot tip line (206) 222-1975. Two of the three callers are insiders known to the National Report to be reliable confidential informants.

The caller unknown to this publication is a low level employee who could only state that there was some kind of a medical emergency involving President Obama. The other two callers known to us are both support personnel within the Obama administration. Both confirmed this week has been a political disaster for the president and this has taken a tremendous toll on him.

By the following day links and excerpts referencing this article were being circulated via social media, with many of those who encountered the item mistaking it for a genuine news article. However, the article was just a bit of satire from the National Report, a web site that publishes outrageous fictional stories such as “IRS Plans to Target Leprechauns Next,” “Boy Scouts Announce Boobs Merit Badge,” and “New CDC Study Indicates Pets of Gay Couples Worse at Sports, Better at Fashion Than Pets of Straight Couples.”

The National Report’s (since removed) disclaimer page notes that:
National Report is a news and political satire web publication, which may or may not use real names, often in semi-real or mostly fictitious ways. All news articles contained within National Report are fiction, and presumably fake news. Any resemblance to the truth is purely coincidental.

  19. The SNOT NOSED PIECES of FECES, who call themselves ISIS try very hard to show everybody that they know how to cut off people’s heads. Really such behavior doesn’t require any real skills,or brainpower. We must keep in mind that a very big percentage of the GOAT lovers, don’t possess an education. If their leader gets knocked off they have nobody to tell them what to do, We send people who have brainpower to fight wars because if their leader gets knocked off at least they can still use their gourds to continue the fight. Intelligence will always whip the a$$ of stupidity.

  20. HapnHal……..
Such satire requires a little imagination along with the ability to TWIST words in JEST. I think the MORON who calls himself the CINC has little character,or demonstrable mentality of his own. Instead he reads other people’s wit from a teleprompter. As the leader of America he is in WAY OVER HIS HEAD,and hasn’t the slightest idea how to behave in the circumstances that are now upon him. As for a mental breakdown, I believe that his alleged mental breakdown occurred LONG AGO.

“With regards to the statement, on full employment there is really only one type of employment that ultimately matters which is full-time. Part-time and temporary employment do not foster household formation, higher levels of consumer spending or increased tax revenues. The issue is that even though the unemployment rate is approaching levels of “full-employment,” it has been primarily a function of the shrinking of the labor force. As shown in the chart below, full-time employment is basically at the same level as it has been since the financial crisis as “real employment” has primarily been a function of population growth and little else.”

  23. CW…….
Do you have any information from the 1930s to compare against? Might prove interesting.

  24. citizenwells

I have had this discussion many times.
    30’s vs now.
Most people then lived on farms or knew farming & were able to survive the depression.
Fewer people now know how to survive & produce food.

  25. Cw…….
I would disagree that most people lived on farms, but I would agree that most people had upbringing that included some level of gardening, and survival. I know that yes as a youth we lived just outside of the city. But when WW2 began my mother went to work at a local defense plant (GE) to augment my father’s income. He operated his own business, which during the war came perilously close to no earnings at all. Yet he,and my mother together kept us kids fed, clothed, well and schooled. In addition my mother grew a fairly large garden, and canned much of what she grew, kept the house clean, and worked swing shift at GE. To this day I have difficulty figuring out when she slept. I think you are right when you say that people today have little training regarding survival. Art Linkletter once said that his family never really knew there was a depression because they had always lived as though there was one. Then there was the WPA,and CCC. Both were involved with infrastructer. Our water filtration plant which is still in service was built using labor supplied by WPA. A typical hourly earning was any where from .35 cents per hour, up as high as .75cents per hour for SKILLED construction workers. Often several generations of a family lived in one house, and most done whatever they could to contribute to staying alive.

Hamas is attacking. Israel is defending. Russia is invading. The Middle East is smoldering. Boko Haram is massacring. ISIS is marching and murdering, Iran, N Korea and China are threatening. American cities are crumbling. Our southern border is dissolving. Our debt is skyrocketing. Obamacare is falling apart. The VA is showing us how Obamacare will wind up. The IRS is violating the law. Americans are hurting. Our enemies are laughing.

You pretty well covered all the bases…….you ask “How many balls can Obama keep in the air?…..depends on who’s balls you are talking about.

The only ones he seems to take an interest in are all his male companions…like Reggie, his chef, and all the faggots he has surrounding him….

Obama doesn’t really give a tinkers damn about what’s going on in the world…as long as he doesn’t have to take any action against his Muslim brothers, or the Rainbow coalition..

Remember he did say that he would STAND with the Muslims when an ill wind blows…or something like that.

Well when he said that……he didn’t have to draw me a map !!!

It’s not that Democrats can’t understand how ObamaCare is killing jobs. They can (and it’s obvious to everyone else). The problem is that they just don’t want to see it, so they refuse. This is what we call denial.

  38. CW,,,,,,,,
YA got me on that one. Somehow I didn’t see the MOST IMPORTANT 2 letter word of all. Interestingly today only 25% of our County (Allen) remains in agricultural status. About 45% is a combination of metropolitan, business, and industrial status. About 1% is flood plain, and the balance is a combination of residential, office, and whatever. In the 1930s we had only about a third of the population we have today.Wages during the depression was NOT very great even for skilled workers. In those days a skilled construction worker could earn up to about .75 cents, and MAYBE $1.00 per hour. Until a couple of years ago we were slightly over 200,000. Now we are back down to about 160,000, and we no longer have any HEAVY industry like we had in the 40s. IHC had an assembly plant here. Today we have a GM assembly plant, GE had THREE plants here. Dana axle was here, and Zollner Piston Co was here, and Arco transformer was here, and Pennsylvania Railroad had a car, and engine repair facility here. Then we had Magnavox which as a defense plant supplied electronic goods to the government. We even had a steel rolling mill. At the outset of WW2 all of these companies became defense plants. What is now our International Airport, was built in 1943. It was then an Army Air Corp dispersal point. Most of the B24 Liberators, and the B-17s coming out of Willow Run Michigan where they were built received their permanent crews here. When those bombers left Fort Wayne, they stopped only long enough to refuel, and they went directly overseas. A lot of people came from a radius of over a hundred miles to work at the defense plants that were here. In those days many defense plants worked a swing shift. Not long after the war started it was nearly impossible to find a place to live in Fort Wayne. Virtually all building came to a halt when the war began. Many large houses were turned into apartments. When ever an old commercial building was demolished the floor joists and anything else that was salvageable was removed and REUSED. Many of the old buildings of the day used full 2″x 14″ solid wood, for floor joists, and it was very often either locust, oak,or ash. There was also some Southern yellow pine. I personally know of some houses that were framed with 2x4s,2x8s,and 2x10s resawn from the old floor joists. Most of the houses still stand today. In the late 1950s you could buy a resawn 2x4x16′ for .75 cents, and they were just as straight as any new whitewood studs are today, and in addition most were a full 2″ instead of 1 and 1/2″ like today. If you can still find any of the old commercial floor joists now you will pay huge PREMIUM prices for every one you buy. The old red bricks are also cleaned and reused today. Intelligent design and professional bricklaying can produce some really attractive architecture.

    What’s going on??
Drudge was reporting at 5:36 pm (PT) that ISIS rebels over took a Syrian base and was in the process of doing a head cutting mission on the Syrians. The next post line was asking if Putin was right. Now the stories have disappeared?
    Found this about Putin

I don’t know who is on first anymore….

Think I will take up golfing!

  40. Bob Strauss………
I have a gut feeling that one of these days many Democratic alleged leaders could find themselves in a whole lot worse situation than DENIAL………..more like the SLAMMER, for very extended vacations. Every few weeks we see another Liberal receive an invitation to appear in court ,and not long thereafter he /she disappears. Several from Indiana are now looking at the inside of a cell. One by one two by two they are being caught up with. Does my heart a lot of good, when I see the dumb expressions on their faces when their pictures appear in our local scandal sheets. I am waiting to see the look on Mzzzzzzzzzzz,Limberger’s face, when Perry is acquitted of any wrong doing. Strangely she does look a lot like Mzzzzzzzzzzzz.Blanco in the face. Both have the same STUPID expressions on their faces.

  41. I am wondering if Mzzzzzzzzzzzzz.IMPORTANT’S windows rattled from the 6.0 shock in SFarea. In California the expression “SHAKE AND BAKE” has an entirely different meaning than anywhere else in USA.
