UNCG more college graduates will boost economy, UNCG UNC schools increased tuition and health care, Other people’s money mentality, College graduates cannot find jobs

“Guilford (Large NC County) appears on it’s way to a third consecutive year with annual jobless rates in double digits. Economists say that likely hasn’t happened since the Great Depression.”…Greensboro News Record December 2, 2011

“…and Socialist governments traditionally do make a financial mess. They [socialists] always run out of other people’s money. It’s quite a characteristic of them.”…Margaret Thatcher

“The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command. His heart sank as he thought of the enormous power arrayed against him, the ease with which any Party intellectual would overthrow him in debate, the subtle arguments which he would not be able to understand, much less answer. And yet he was in the right! They were wrong and he was right. The obvious, the silly, and the true had got to be defended. Truisms are true, hold on to that! The solid world exists, its laws do not change. Stones are hard, water is wet, objects unsupported fall towards the earth’s centre. With the feeling that he was speaking to O’Brien, and also that he was setting forth an important axiom, he wrote:

Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows.”…George Orwell, “1984”

More PP, pedagogy platitudes from the Obama crowd, the folks who thrive on spending other people’s money.

From the Greensboro News Record July 8, 2012.

“Success comes down to a matter of degrees”

“UNCG officials say helping more people finish college will boost area’s economic vitality”

“Guilford County needs more people like Greta Germino . Lots of them.

Next spring, Germino — a 33-year-old single mom who dropped out of college at 19 — will finally graduate.

Getting a nutrition degree should help Germino financially.

“I decided to go back because I value education and I know you need a degree in this economy,” she said. “I could always make more money. Who couldn’t?”

Germino’s return to college also will help the local economy, provided that thousands of other Guilford residents join her in completing degrees they started but never finished.

Increasingly, economists, educators and business leaders have focused on the link between a community’s economic vitality and its college attainment rate.

Research shows that for every 1 percent a region improves its attainment rate, its per capita income jumps $763.

“It’s all about skills — who has them and who doesn’t,” said Dewayne Matthews , a vice president at the Lumina Foundation for Education in Indianapolis. “A lot of people knew that skills mattered, but it was not something that people focused on.”

Since the onset of the recession, that has changed.

And now that focus has come to Guilford County.

A group of UNCG officials want to significantly boost the county’s college attainment level in the coming years, a move they believe will significantly help the area’s struggling economy.

On Sept. 11 , they will call together 40 to 50 government, education and foundation leaders to look for ways to encourage people like Germino to go back to school and get their degrees.

“This is an economic thrust to help this community thrive,” said Steve Roberson , UNCG’s dean of undergraduate studies , who pushed the idea of the gathering. “We have to become known as a destination city for economic development. I don’t know any better way to do it.””

“Winners include such places as the Raleigh metro area, where 41 percent of residents have a college degree. The Charlotte region has a rate of 32.2 percent , which is about the national average for all metros.

But the Greensboro-High Point metro area, a three-county area that includes Guilford, Rockingham and Randolph counties, comes in at just 25.6 percent , well behind the rate for the nation and its two largest neighbors.”

“Initially, UNCG officials want local leaders to focus their efforts on Guilford County, which has a college attainment rate of nearly 42 percent , slightly above the national average.

Guilford’s rate far outpaces those of its metro partners, Randolph (22.3 percent) and Rockingham (21.8 percent).”

“Currently, Guilford has more than 67,000  people who started degrees but never finished college. That’s about 21 percent  of the work force.”

More college graduates will boost the economy of UNCG & other colleges. I am in favor of reality based education with real world based goals. However we are fundamentally funding college degree, ideological indoctrination mills.

What we need is less government and more entrepreneurs to create jobs.

The argument put forward in this article is flawed on several levels. First, and most hypocritical is their concern for people getting an education while they have spent like drunken sailors in recent years and raised both tuition and healthcare costs. I spoke to a UNCG student this morning who was just hit with the large healthcare cost increase on top of the tuition increase. He works and uses student loans to support his family. This is creating a hardship.

From Citizen Wells February 12, 2012.

“Amid chants of protest from about 100 students, the UNC Board of Governors this morning approved President Tom Ross’ proposal for tuition and
fee hikes over the next two years.

Ross’ plan would raise tuition by an average of 8.8 percent across the system and keeps increases below 10 percent on every campus.

UNCG’s in-state undergraduates would see a $423, or 7.5 percent, increase in tuition and fees under Ross’ plan. Trustees had sought an increase of 7.8
percent.”

“The state mandates that at least 25 percent of the money from the tuition dollars go toward financial aid for needy students. Some board members recently have spoken out about that requirement, saying it essentially calls for students, who themselves may be struggling, to subsidize the education of other students.”

“Welcome to the world of socialism, redistribution of wealth. In a way I am glad this is happening. A real world example of taking from the “rich” and giving to the “poor.””

From Citizen Wells May 2, 2012.

“Obama spoke recently at UNC, The University of NC, and presented more of his Orwellian lies about education costs and helping students.

Obama and the Democrats have a problem in NC.

UNC system schools recently announced tuition increases.

The unemployment rate in NC is among the highest in the nation. Those about to  graduate face bleak prospects.

And despite Obama’s lies about Obama Care reducing the cost of health care, UNC students just found out that their health care insurance is increasing significantly.”

“On top of rising tuition and fees, those UNC system students who buy the university-sponsored health insurance plan will face steep premium increases in the next academic year.

The cost of health insurance will climb from a range of $61 to $77 monthly to a range of $118 to $133 monthly, according to a memo sent from UNC President Tom Ross to the UNC Board of Governors. On an annual basis, most students will pay about $500 to $700 more in 2012-13, depending on the campus.”

https://citizenwells.wordpress.com/2012/05/02/obama-lies-work-on-unc-students-unc-student-health-care-increase-tuition-increase-high-unemployment-obama-uses-orwellian-language-to-sway-students-occupy-white-house/

UNCG officials are urging people to graduate from college to boost the local economy. How does that square with the following.

From the Greensboro News Record June 18, 2012.

“It’s not often that our part of the world comes in first in anything . But economist Don Jud has found an example. And it’s a biggie.

In recent months, Jud says, the Greensboro-High Point metro area has far outpaced state and national averages for employment growth in goods production.

That means companies in Guilford, Rockingham and Randolph counties, which make up the local metro area, are hiring people to make stuff.

“That’s the best news I know,” Jud said.

But there’s just one problem: Jud and others can’t say with any certainty why we’re doing so much better than everyone else.

“I think I have spotted a trend,” said Jud, who defined goods-producing jobs as those in construction and manufacturing. “Why it is ongoing and how likely it is to continue, I really don’t know.”

Jud said that from April 2011 to April 2012, goods-producing employment in the area increased 6 percent. That compares to a 1.8 percent growth rate nationally and just 0.2 percent for North Carolina.

During those 12 months, Jud said, employment in the local metro has grown by 5,200 jobs, with more than 75 percent of that coming from the goods-producing sector.

Area people involved in economic development welcomed the surge.”

there are a number of argument styles of which the “ad hominem” (personal attack) is one. Ad hominem attacks the person, or takes a personal tone , as opposed to using reason or logic. It is priimarily a distraction from the issue as opposed to having any factual basis.
It is commonly used by lawyers, in courtrooms, when they have no case.
Ad Hominem can be either “direct” against another person or, passively, by using inference, as I have seen here many times. Inference is even more destructive in that it can easily be misconstrued as to it’s intent, thereby landing on an innocent party thus allowing them to think that it is them who is under attack.
There are many forms of argument of which this is only one. Beware also of misinformation, as I’m certain you all are.
Enough of the inflamatory language and name calling…it accomplishes nothing aside from calling attention to your own ignorance.
    —————————————-
OK coldwarvet2, you’re right. I imagine you to be a gentleman. And personal attacks are indeed a distraction, whether direct or passive. Lesson learned.

Nevertheless, a few (not many) people post the most outrageous stuff OR they post something that could be accepted as reasonable except for the tone in which they present it, meaning with pure arrogance! I for one tend to push back against those people, as they are so irritating. The outrageous stuff … I just try to scroll through.

But your advice is sound, and much appreciated. And BTW, I’m sure my ignorance shows every time I log on. But that’s why I’m here… I’m trying to correct that.

I’m not saying that the things said here are not correct necessarily. Some of it is quite correct. All I was attempting to do is to give some here, those who care, another tool by which they might maintain a viable position in an argument or debate. Everyone has a perspective on every subject. It is exceedingly difficult to pass along that perspective if the other party/parties has/have been shut down by an attack.
There are folks in this world that actually have gotten along by using flawed logic or techniques to win arguments. If we were to be the mouse in the corner, we would likely see those qualities in their personal lives also. Some call this power and control.
As I said in my post, and the ignorance I refered to, is particularized to this subject alone and was in no way directed at you. You have always had a positive offering as far as I can tell. I can’t even say really that, if it were directed someone, they would even know it, because some actually don’t know.
A thought occurred to me later also, that I think would be appropriate at least for some of the info I see posted. If some thing is really really far off the known or accepted norms for a particular subject, it would be entirely appropriate (if one were that interested), to require verification from a number of independent sources to test the veracity of that information.
Thanks for your posts, by the way, I read them all.

    Hi William
I believe the jury is till out on Romney, but I think personally that he is doing a lot better that I initially thought he would by this stage of the game. It might be well to remember also that he has had a lot to overcome within his own party to get to where he is. All the knowingly skewed polls show him always in contention. They don’t like to show that. Additionally, there are a lot of numbers we can’t see. Through his most recent actions, I see also that bo has actually galvanized segments of the populace that will begin to change things as election day draws near.

This is the kind of positive endorsement that can definitely make a difference.

  14. coldwarvet2 ,

I tend to analyze this situation a wee bit differently, I don’t have much time to write tonight therefore I will make this brief. America needs someone that will stand-up to Obama, call him out on his own failed policies, use his own media words against him, and Romney’s campaign is not doing that.

Romney has a choice. Either play yours competitors game at their level, or elevate to your own. Currently, Romney is playing theirs. Never scoop down to your competitors ideology for an allurement, ever.

Romney needs to get out of bumper sticker mentality and catch phase speeches which tend to be weekly. Whomever is his staff, needs to be terminated. All Romney Campaign can quote is things like “Obama Lies, freedom dies? And ever week, a new bite for some weird catchphrase?

    Is that all’s he got?

  15. What a riot….look who it is:

    Congressional bully pushes anti-bullying legislation

The congresswoman known for giving her staffers profanity-laced nicknames, throwing temper tantrums and, at times, throwing objects, has introduced anti-bullying legislation.

In March 2011, The Daily Caller ran an expose of Texas Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee’s treatment of her staff, complete with tears, shouting, waiting, cursing and quitting (Jackson Lee has one of the highest turnovers on Capitol Hill).

“‘You stupid mother-effer’ was like a constant,” one former staffer told TheDC. “Like, all the time. But the interesting thing is she would really project that behavior more towards her African-American staffers.

    william
I don’t really disagree with you all that much, especially in your first paragraph. Romney is running against a failed incumbent in many areas.
Why he doesn’t attack is anybody’s guess. There is certainly ample fodder there.
It could be thet Romney has spent a good deal of his life in the business community where, although a tough arena to survive in, requiring good instincts and intelligence, it rarely requires one to go toe to toe with an opponent. In fact, as one climbs the ladder in business, more and more of the dirty work is done for him/her. This could be, I just won’t speculate.
I still belive that we were never going to get anything like a Reagan this time around, but maybe someone from the good ol’ boys club up in DC, which is exactly what we got. Which is why, along with the foregoing, I cut the man any slack at all.
Additionally, it is rather frustrating to watch all these opportunities slip by, but, that is more or less the type of candidate I was expecting. I didn’t, however, expect him to be doing even this well. kind of a conundrum in a platform so to speak. You know well how I feel by now in that, whatever this guy turns out to be, he must succeed under any and all cicumstances. Meaning, even if we have to carry his water for the whole 9 yards. Some things ya just gotta do. Because he is the way he is, makes it doubly hard to speculate very far into the future , so there is that element also to consider.

  18. William | July 9, 2012 at 9:18 pm |

    *********************************
William, repeatedly those are my sentiments, too; however, today it occurred to me that political campaigns have cycles – peaks and valleys, if you will. It just MAY be that Romney is sort of coasting right now and running out the clock for Obama until the end of the vacation period. If Romney forces the apex too soon, his campaign could feel that there will be little further ground to achieve and Obama will have too much time left to recoil.

This is all speculation on my part, but I will say affirmatively that if by September Romney hasn’t taken the initiative, removed the gloves, and developed some terrific passion, he could end up being toast. Obama has a seasoned, crooked, scandalous bunch of handlers that are well-versed in the Chicago way.

The problem we face is not just the fools in government but the uninformed, unwashed bunch of voters who are acting the part of fools themselves. Tonight O’Reilly’s producer aired his experience interviewing younger folks at a beach. He said that 55 percent of them did not have a clue as to what July 4th was all about. Our country is in deep trouble.

  19. coldwarvet2 | July 9, 2012 at 10:46 pm |

You make good points, especially about Romney’s business career and aptitudes. We all want him to get going and hate to see his rather laid-back attitude.

Could it be likened to a horse race where the winner often holds back until the last big burst of strength puts him over the finish line? I just don’t know if he has that kind of drive. So far………not, but the race is not near the finish line yet.

  20. Here is a very good site – Publius Huldah’s Blog – which I ran into tonight.

Although her treatise is dated 10/09 and concerns the U.N. Climate Change Treaty, it is exceptionally applicable to the U.N. Small Arms Treaty which is going to be signed by Hillary Clinton and Obama on July 27 in NYC.

She writes very well, is exceptionally knowledgeable and legally trained.
We need to know that not just any old treaty signed on behalf of the U.S., even if ratified by 2/3 of the Senate, becomes the law of the land, as so many think. She uses the Federalist Papers as well as the Constitution to prove her position, which is very compelling.

If Romney is elected, and tries to run our country as he would a state, he will fail miserably. Running a state is NOT the same as running the United States. First of all the CONSTRAINTS of the POTUS office are not the same, nor is anything else. In addition to run a state he doesn’t need to know anything about FOREIGN POLICY, but he damn well better have some idea as how to pursue Foreign Policy if he is elected, because if he doesn’t know how he will be nothing more than a carbon copy of what we now have for a potus. A pendulum swings two directions.

PROTECTING THE CIVIL RIGHTS OF CONSCIENCE

Conscience Cause – Protecting The Civil Rights Of Conscience

    * Petition *

“Our petition calls on Congress to take action against HHS’ employer mandate.”

    * Petition Text: *

“Dear Speaker Boehner & Leader Reid,

The First Amendment to our Constitution begins “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” This explicit protection of rights of conscience is as fundamental to us as our unalienable Rights to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

“A rule enacted by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) forces individual and institutional employers to purchase health insurance for employees which provides free abortion-inducing drugs, sterilization procedures and contraceptive medications. Acknowledging that this mandate burdens the free exercise of religion of many Americans, the rule contains a limited accommodation for “houses of worship” but which is defined so narrowly as to exclude many employers with religious or moral objections, including religious hospitals, schools and charities.

Because the rule compels such employers (whether they be individuals, institutions or corporations) to violate deeply-held tenets of faith and conscience, it is in direct violation of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. We fervently petition Congress to act immediately to repeal or amend this rule to protect the free exercise of religion and the rights of conscience of all Americans.

As signers of this petition, we do not represent any particular religious faith or political party. We are people of many faiths, and some of no particular faith. We have no uniform view on contraception. We are, however, unified as Americans in our support of the primacy of rights of religion and conscience. We affix our names here because we believe the mandate represents an unprecedented and unnecessary intrusion into the civic and economic life of people of faith and conscience and sets a dangerous precedent that undermines the freedoms enjoyed by all Americans.

We respectfully request the United States House of Representatives to take immediate action to preserve “rights of conscience against the enterprises of civil authority.” After such a protection passes the U.S. House, we respectfully request its approval by the United States Senate.”

“The First Amendment to our Constitution begins “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Reducing opposition to the so called contraception mandate to a discussion on the cost of birth control is akin to believing a block of ice floating in the ocean is of no consequence to passing ships.

This rule represents not the tip of the iceberg but rather, a lethal mass hidden, in this case, under reams of legislative legalese and bureaucratic red tape.

Requiring religious institutions to act against their faith or face punitive penalties is unconstitutional. Denying a centuries-old definition of what is a religious institution in service to the whims of a temporary administration is unconscionable.”

    What is the HHS mandate?

“The mandate of the Department of Health and Human Services has received wide attention and has been met with vigorous and united opposition from people of all faiths. In an unprecedented way, the federal government will both force religious institutions to facilitate and fund a product contrary to their own moral teaching and purport to define which religious institutions are “religious enough” to merit protection of their religious liberty. These features of the “preventive services” mandate amount to an unjust law.”

Last week, the bloggers who first exposed Operation Fast and Furious, Mike Vanderboegh and David Codrea, filed a formal complaint with the Washington, D.C. Office of Bar Counsel alleging that Holder committed “professional misconduct” during the congressional investigation into the scandal.

Because Holder was found in contempt of Congress for his “refusal to comply with a subpoena duly issued by the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform,” Vanderboegh and Codrea contend, “[i]t would appear that several, if not all of these rules [the D.C. Bar’s rules of professional conduct], have been violated.”

    snip….

Vanderboegh and Codrea each published the complaint they jointly registered on their individual blogs “[b]ecause of the serious political ramifications involved, and because some on the Board may be sympathetic to AG Holder’s positions and hostile to those of the House contempt charges, and in order to ensure that this complaint receives proper attention and is not ignored through deliberate indifference.”

WASHINGTON DC – Jubilant scientists at the DNC’s High Speed Word Collider (HSWC) announced today they have conclusively disproven the existence of Roberts’ Taxon, the theoretical radioactive Facton particle that some had worried would lead to the implosion of the entire Universal Health Care System.
“I think it’s time to pop the champagne corks,” said HSWC Director David Plouffe. “Then blaze some choom.”

The landmark experiment in Quantum Rhetoric began early this week after legal particle cosmologist John Roberts published a paper in the Quarterly Journal of Tortured Logic that solved the long-debated Pelosi’s Paradox in Universal Health Care Theory.
