“An Obama-Santorum matchup would be good for the country
Obama vs. Santorum is the only contest where real issues would be the focus”

“Mitt Romney was the inevitable nominee — until he wasn’t.

In order to sustain a lead, a candidate’s message must resonate with the heart and the mind. Mr. Romney’s cakewalk to the nomination has been stymied by the inability to get anyone excited about his campaign. He has supporters but not believers.

Rick Santorum’s message resonates with voters’ hearts and minds (this week at least), because he is a true believer. He believes in his message, and his message is consistent with core Republican values. What gave Mr. Santorum the edge in Iowa, Minnesota, Colorado and Missouri can give him an edge in the general election against President Barack Obama.

Mr. Santorum speaks directly to issues that are most relevant to core Republicans. He focuses on social and cultural issues that evoke emotions, and emotions move people to vote, especially those who align themselves with a particular party. This has helped him do well in primaries and caucuses when core conservatives turn out to vote in greater numbers than independents.

Conventional wisdom states a candidate must win independents to win an election. But this is only true if independents show up to vote in large numbers.

Generally, independents are less likely to vote than party-identifiers. In 2008, Mr. Obama’s message and charisma evoked an emotional response from independents. But with the president failing to meet the expectations of many whom he energized in 2008, turnout among this bloc of voters is expected to be small in 2012, which means winning independents will be less important.

When independents stay at home, getting the party base to turn out becomes more important. Mr. Santorum has been able to do this, and Mr. Romney has not.

What pushed Mr. Santorum to the front in the most recent contests — and vaulted him into a tie with Mr. Romney in at least one national poll — was his ability to stay above the bickering and negativity that took place between Mr. Romney and Newt Gingrich. Mr. Santorum is not as susceptible to personal attacks, as he seems to have a clean personal life, as far as we know. This means to attack Mr. Santorum, one must attack his policy positions. This cannot be done in the GOP nomination process because to attack Mr. Santorum’s policy positions would be to attack the Republican platform.

This wouldn’t stop the president from criticizing Mr. Santorum’s policy positions in the general election, but it also means we would see a campaign in which policy would have to be discussed in a meaningful way. Could we be so lucky?

If Mr. Gingrich wins the nomination, the Obama campaign will go after his personal life and his over-the-top persona. If Mr. Romney wins the right to go up against the president, the focus will be on his tax returns, flip-flopping and his work at Bain Capital.

But if Mr. Santorum wins the nomination, he and the president will be forced to defend their respective parties’ views of what good government entails and which policies are best for the country. In other words, an Obama-Santorum matchup will focus on things that actually matter.

An election about issues is what this country needs. It may be too much to hope for, but it is a prospect we should all get excited about. To win the GOP nomination, Mr. Santorum must find a way to keep his campaign positive and issue-focused. Not only will it help him win the nomination, but it is the right thing to do.”

  1. Very good article, CW. BTW, I cast my vote for Santorum in our recent AZ primary. There is not one of the four who doesn’t have some negative(s), but Santorum has tried to be a good legislator and he is certainly not a phony.

I fully agree with your comment.

We are at war with those who hate the traditional principles, values and morals which have made America an extraordinarily successful unique experiment. We are at war with those who deny America’s Christian roots and seek a godless society. …..

  14. Cabby,
I agree that is an excellent article.

It brings to mind what we all learned in school that the U.S. Constitution requires the separation of powers. That there are three branches of government, The Executive, The Judicial and the Legislative and each branch has different power. Congress, the Legislative Branch, makes the laws and controls the purse strings.

So my question to you all is this.
By what authority does Barack Obama have the power to tell insurance companies that they are required to provide a specified medical coverage? Isn’t he overstepping into an area that is designated to Members of Congress? Congress has oversight over of the Executive Branch. Right? Then they need to get off their duffs and tell Obama to get the hell out of their business. Maybe we need to remind them of their oath to uphold the Constiution………..

Off topic, but I heard a viewpoint the other day about the gas prices and thought I would share it with you.

The oil companies are extremely ticked off at obama. What is the one thing they can do that would put a crimp in his re-election? Raise the price of gas and blame obama!

Could this be a part of the gas problem?

Just the opinion of a dumb ole (Natural Born Citizen) country boy.

  19. It is putting the cart in front of the horse to get into long-winded discusion on natural born whatever. There is not one vetted legal document that supports the belief that Obama,Sr. is the father of Obama and that Stanley Ann Dunham is the mother of Obama. Using Dunham’s high school signatures Polarik debunked the Soetoro Dunham divorce papers. Same can be said for the Obama Dunham divorce papers. The WH Obama birth certificate has the same bad signature. That BC, both divorce papers, and the alleged Kenya BC were forged with the same Royal Standard manual typewriter circa 1961 manufacture. It had no No. 1 key so a small L key had to be used. Dunham passport records have the same bad signatures and use of the circa 1961 Royal typewriter. If you are going to prevail use facts. Just because a fact is missing doesn’t allow you skip over it or to make an assumption.

“ObamaCollegeGate on the way? Yesterday during his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference, Andrew Breitbart gave the audience and C-SPAN viewers a preview of what’s to come during the 2012 general election against Barack Obama. He said the mainstream media refused to vet Obama in 2008 and that he will not go unvetted in 2012. Breitbart says he has videos of Obama in college that nobody has seen. Considering he’s the man who took down ACORN and Anthony Weiner, this could be good.”

    Hey All,

If I may just opine for a second:

This article is a perfect example of what I commented the other day about how Ron Paul is simply “ignored” by the media and that is why his supporters feel they need to remind people that there is another candidate in the race.

The author suggests that INDEPENDENTS elected the last President, and then goes on to suggest that because Obama hasn’t fulfilled his promises to those INDEPENDENTS, they will likely stay home come election day.

The author opines that Romney, Santorum and Gingrich do NOT appeal to those INDEPENDENTS, because they speak the Republican “line” on every issue.

I would submit that Ron Paul DOES apeal to INDEPENDENTS, and maybe the Republican Party should realize that it is the INDEPENDENTS who decide winners in elections, and at least TRY to sway them to the Republican ticket.

So Gingrich get two mentions in the article and Romney receives five mentions, and Ron Paul receives ZERO mentions in this article.

And another thing, Paul polls near Santorum in National Polls against Obama, and ABOVE Gingrich.

Just think where he’d be polling if the media actually REPORTED on Paul, like the military rally the other day in Washington DC. Even with the letter warning Active Military NOT to attend, there looked to be 500 or so that marched to the White House to show solidarity for the Doctor.

And one more thing the author misses, and that’s Santorum’s voting RECORD. Voting to pass No Child Left Behind when it wasn’t funded, voting to expand medicare with the perscription “add on”, voting FOR earmarks for his State (you see folks this is the difference between Santorum and Paul, Santorum puts earmarks in bills and then votes FOR them. Paul puts earmarks in bills and votes AGAINST them, knowing of course they will still pass, but still doing the RIGHT thing, it’s called playing the game).

Oh Santorum has plenty of “baggage”.

And just wait until the media starts spinning him taking his son home after he was born dead. They’ll spin it as some “ritual” or something, just wait.

Obama’s personal life is off limits, but Santorum’s won’t be.

As I stated early on in my comment, this article is exactly why Paul’s supporter feel they need to keep his name out there.

ALL media, this author included, sure shows DISRESPECT for Paul by not even mentioning his name, at least in my opinion.

    ***********************************
IB, I understand that you are using the above example as to how the media MIGHT attack Santorum, but I hope that readers here understand that what the Santorums did was perfectly legal and just. This was THEIR son, and just because the baby was delivered at the hospital did not change that fact one iota.

For people that may not have lived long enough, it used to be common for the bereaved to have their deceased loved one in a casket right at home for several days before the funeral. It was a time for gathering of loved ones and friends and a blessing to them as they said their goodbyes.

What would we have expected the Santorums to do? Have the hospital throw the baby in the trash? This was a deeply personal decision that was made for personal reasons. To color this as gross or bizarre is absolutely despicable and unforgivable, imho, as some are doing.

What has happened to us as a nation? Oh, I remember that every day about 4,000 innocent unborn babies are killed.
The conscience of this country has become warped and calloused.

    “Why anti-journalists savaged Tim Adams”

“The 10 days that shook Adams’ world began with his decision to attend a conference of the Council of Conservative Citizens, a paleo-conservative political action committee meeting in nearby Nashville, Tenn.

A fan of gonzo journalist Hunter Thompson, Adams hoped to have some fun with the paleos. He thought they might make a good “fear and loathing”-style subject about which to write for his summer program at WKU.

On lunch break of the second day, Adams found himself at a table with a few young couples. More interested in meeting new people than talking politics, the tablemates discussed careers and exchanged personal stories.

When Adams mentioned that he graduated from the University of Hawaii, the topic turned to the 2008 presidential campaign.

“You were in Hawaii. What did you think of the election?” asked one of Adams’ new acquaintances.

“What do people in Hawaii say about Obama’s birth certificate?” someone asked.

    “There isn’t one,” Adams answered.

Adams stuck to what he knew. “There is no hospital record of his birth in Honolulu,” he answered, “and the Hawaii Department of Health told us in the Elections Office that there was no birth certificate.”

“From all I have seen,” Adams continued, “he’s lied about being born in hospital in Hawaii. It simply didn’t happen.””

Yes the man is fired up! Please pass it on to all who will listen. His message is not just a Catholic thing. It’s about disregard for the Constitution. By what authority does Barack Obama DEMAND that all insurance companies provide a specified medical coverage? Will the next step be denial of medical procedures because you’re old? Or forced sterilization after giving birth to one child, as they do in China? Think about it.

    Jonah,
The answer to the first question is not by anything within the Constitution, and in fact probably violates the 10th Amendment as well as the 1st. The answer to the second question is YES, and it will begin shortly. The third, forced sterilization, I seriously doubt unless it could be applied to a political party only (say forced sterilization of conservatives). Obama doesn’t want to force sterilization of people receiving welfare, or say other federal aid, as it would cut down on future democratic party voters.

  53. I see the local morning news channels are carrying both local and national reports on the price of gasoline now spiking over $5.00 per gallon in many parts of the country.
I remember seeing a report during the previous heavy spike in gasoline prices reaching what was deemed a “tipping point” at $3.50 per gallon. This was when raising the price of fuel began to become counter productive in terms of profit, as it caused wide-spread curtailment of discretionary driving thereby driving demand down to the point of causing major losses to the oil companies. (law of large numbers)
I’m really beginning to wonder what will be happening this time around as it doesn’t appear that the economy, in terms of gasoline consumers, is in any better shape. It is, in fact, in significantly worse shape.

  55. I certainly don’t know the gas prices around the country in fluctuation, but I will say that in my area, it has risen over .20 cents in two days.

Of course, this has a tremendous affect due to supply and demand, as well as U.S. foreign policy; but I foresee a “spin” of the media and the Obama Administration claiming “Capital Greed” as the culprit, not policy.

    Just my future thought,

  56. William
The implications of $5.00 gas are huge. Now we are talking not just about “tipping points”, or travel as it pertains to consumerism, but consumerism in general. This will include internet consumerism as well.
What I believe will happen, in the interim, is a false consumerism based upon credit, but at this rate, credit will soon be exhausted.
