“Higher gas prices are crimping consumer spending and slowing the already-weak U.S. economy. And they could get worse in the coming months.
The Federal Reserve this week took steps to boost economic growth. But those stimulus measures are also pushing oil prices up. If gas prices follow, consumers will have less money to spend elsewhere.
The impact of the Fed’s actions ‘‘is likely to weigh on the value of the U.S. dollar and lift commodity prices,’’ said Joseph Carson, U.S. economist at AllianceBernstein. ‘‘We would not be surprised if (it) fueled more inflation in coming months, squeezing the real income of U.S. workers.’’
Americans are already feeling pinched by high unemployment, slow wage growth and higher gas prices.
Consumers increased their spending at retail businesses by 0.9 percent in August, the Commerce Department reported Friday. But that was largely because they paid more for gas. Excluding the impact of gas prices and a sizeable increase in auto sales, retail sales rose just 0.1 percent.
Perhaps more telling is where Americans spent less. Consumers cut back on clothing, electronics and at general merchandise outlets — discretionary purchases that typically signal confidence in the economy.
Gas prices have risen more than 50 cents per gallon in the past two months. The national average was $3.87 a gallon on Friday. Most of the increase took place in August, which drove the biggest one-month increase in overall consumer prices in three years, the Labor Department said Friday in a separate report.
‘‘Consumers were not willing to spend much at the mall since they are feeling the pump price pinch,’’ said Chris Christopher, an economist at IHS Global Insight.
Weaker retail sales will likely weigh on growth in the July-September quarter. Economists at Bank of America Merrill Lynch slashed their third-quarter growth forecast to an annual rate of only 1.1 percent, down from 1.5 percent. That’s not nearly fast enough to spur more hiring, which has languished since February.
The Fed is hoping to kick-start growth with a series of bold steps announced Thursday that could make borrowing cheaper for years.
It plans to spend $40 billion a month to buy mortgage bonds to make home buying more affordable. It also pledged to keep short-term interest rates near zero through at least mid-2015.
And Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said the Fed will continue its efforts — and intensify them if necessary — until the job market improves ‘‘substantially.’’
The announcement ignited a two-day stock market rally that sent the Dow Jones industrial average to its highest level since December 2007, the first month of the Great Recession.
But the Fed’s actions also helped move oil prices briefly above $100 a barrel Friday for the first time since May. They fell back slightly, but were still up 74 cents to $99.04 a barrel in mid-afternoon trading.
Carson noted that the Fed’s previous rounds of bond-buying pushed up commodity prices and fueled greater inflation. That weakened the ability of U.S. consumers to spend and likely slowed growth, he said.
He expects the same thing to happen again.
The Fed’s moves can push up oil prices in several ways. The Fed creates new money to pay for its mortgage bond purchases. That increases the amount of dollars in circulation and can lower their value. Oil is priced in dollars, so the price tends to rise when the dollar falls. That’s because it costs more for overseas investors to purchase dollars to buy oil.
Lower interest rates also push investors out of safer assets, such as bonds, and into riskier investments, such as oil, in hopes of a greater return. And if the Fed’s moves accelerate growth, that would increase demand for oil and gas and also raise their prices.
Higher gas prices are eating up a bigger share of Americans’ incomes than in previous years. Spending at the pump accounts for 8.2 percent of the typical family’s household income, according to Fred Rozell of the Oil Price Information Service. That’s just below last year’s 8.3 percent.
Those represent the biggest slice of household income spent on gas since 1981. The typical household spends about $342 per month on gasoline. Before gasoline prices began rising in 2004, households spent less than $200 per month, Rozell said, under 5 percent of median income.”

The rest of the world wasn’t able to put it together, then. I began a blogtalk radio program against Obama towards the end of 2008 to warn America against bad Barry. It was appalling to me then that so many people were blinded to what was so obvious about this empty suit. Consequently I focused on the problem and came to these conclusions.
• The average American raising a family today is focused primarily upon his/her job to support and give what the family needs. They have little time to spend researching the news in the in depth I did. They trusted MSM which highly favoured and supported Obama.
• The strategist who had been working diligently for as many as 50 years had been succeeding in many very invisible but effective projects that prepared America to vote the way it did. Among these projects are the “dumbing down of America through a large number of Communist/Progressive teachers” and drug abuse. Another method was to place as many Progressives in politics as their money could buy. Thus the high percentage of Communists in the Democratic party.
• They capitalized on Bush’s Iraq war of which there was no smoking gun. (That one really pissed me off, too.) They were able to use America’s anger with those Bush years to vote against McCain in a similar way I hope America’s disgust with Obama will force them to vote against him.
• They played the race card big time. White America wanted to show the world how “non racist” is was by voting a pretend-to-be-black man. They kept pushing the idea it was HISTORICAL. “Historical” must have seemed glamorous to voters then. Since then the race card has been played in such a heavy handed way Americans of every color have gotten sick of it.
• The problem with arresting and bringing Obama to justice is that the very people in power to do so are complicit in Obama’s treason—Justice Roberts for starters. . . .
• Looking back, We didn’t have much choice. McCain wasn’t exactly a red hot candidate. Believe it or not I think America would not be too much better off had McCain won. In a perverse sort a way, Obama did for America what McCain would never have done—OBAMA AWAKENED AMERICA.

I find the timing of the video noteworthy and curious. Has anyone looked into who is behind the man who made it? Did anyone really look at his connections or who paid him? I would find that very interesting as this whole catastrophe has the potential of creating that ‘perfect emergency’ that Obama has been pining for. The media is claiming that Nakoula Basseley Nakoula is a Coptic Christian and has also made soft porn movies along with being a real estate agent. It is also said he has previously been convicted of bank fraud. While I have no idea if this is true, I find it convenient that a Christian is blamed for this and then further sullied by the ‘porn’ accusation. The feds are claiming he used the alias ‘Sam Bacile.’ In fact, the words ‘believed to be’ were used when he was taken into custody in an act that I can only describe as Shariah law enforcement. Did I also mention, the guy was a snitch for the feds? America, this is what electing Barack Obama has brought you. He has firmly stayed faithful to his Muslim roots.
Do you really believe this all just ‘happened’ on 9/11? Really? The United States was warned at least 3 days prior to the attack, and by some accounts it was a week. But Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and their minions did nothing. Unless of course you count drinking and partying abroad as Clinton does in excess and schmoozing with celebrities on Letterman and in Hollywood and Las Vegas as Barack Obama does. Our esteemed leader in chief could not even be bothered to stay awake when our Ambassador was being sodomized, tortured and murdered in a preplanned location where he should have been safe. Three others,including an ex-Navy SEAL were also killed. Obama went to bed and didn’t get briefed till the next day. Meanwhile, our NOC list was taken, outing all those who support America and her activities in that area. Well done. ■Barack Obama could theoretically suspend elections in war time. And then there is the oldie, but goodie martial law. I would not put it past him.

There are others out there wielding power and money behind the scenes. That’s not a conspiracy – that’s just the plain truth. It has always been that way. Each believes he will win in the end and then kill the others he joined forces with to gain power. Sadly, at this point in time, Russia and China look to be the strongest and are willing to sacrifice the most people. They are also the most brutal and the strongest militarily.
Our problem from the beginning is that we refuse to face evil. America has refused to name our enemy out of political correctness. Our enemies are radical Islam and Communism. It’s not a War on Terror – that is a symptom. Not calling our enemies out is about to get us annihilated.
I am torn as so many of you are. My heart and soul still cries out for retribution over 9/11. I have never felt that we went after the true culprit, which is Iran. We should have finished this war back in the late 70s, early 80s. Now it threatens to engulf us and the civilized world. Our weakness is apparent and our enemies smell blood in the water. But while I suppress the urge to call for the leveling of Iran and other Islamic countries, I know that once we go there, our world will fill with blood and death. It is my belief that Obama will take us to war, not to win it, but to bolster himself politically. He secretly gloats at the thought of Israel’s destruction. He wants America to fall and is helping our enemies achieve that through acts of war.

Just watched Cong. Allen West of Fla interviewed on FOX & Friends. In regards to Romney’s revelation that people will vote for Obama because they are unemployed and they want a handout, he quoted Alexis de Tocqueville’s famous quote –
“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. Good Morning All. If anyone could pass the following message to Mit Romney and Paul Ryan it would be appreciated.
Dear Mit: This morning, like most mornings because my wife is a Democrat, I was half listening to NPR and they are harping on your comments that 47% of the population are dependent on government and are highly unlikely to be persuaded to vote for you. I have a suggestion for you going forward.
You are right that there are probably 47% of population receiving government benefits. However, I would suggest that a third to half of them are the ones for whom the benefits (the safety-net) were meant to aid – the truly disabled at work, unable to work through no fault of their own, etc. Most of these folks, I would suggest, are people who would be strongly supportive of your positions because they know that the benefits they receive are being jeopardized by excessive government spending and the millions who are fraudulently signing up for benefits. If you approach the issue in terms of making programs sustainable for those who truly need the assistance it would be a stronger argument.

I wish there would be one case brought against Obama solely based on his use of a fraudulent SSN…the NBC cases, if they even get a couple of steps forward, always end up in the weeds with various claimed definitions by the clueless (including the judges). There’s just not enough time for all of that now. Rather there is real evidence of the use of the phony SSN/s to the point now that O’s number used, at least up to 2009, now has been completely scrubbed so it shows that it doesn’t even exist! Enough investigators though have saved the evidence that they found prior to that. Either way, this would point to O’s not being ANY kind of U.S. citizen and a felon to boot.
