HONOLULU – President Barack Obama has rejected his first piece of legislation from Congress, a stopgap spending bill that never had to take effect.
The White House on Wednesday said Obama exercised his right to send back to the Congress a temporary appropriations bill that lawmakers passed in case a winter storm about two weeks ago would have prevented them from approving a final measure to fund the Defense Department next year. The Dec. 19 blizzard didn’t keep them away from the Capitol and they approved the $626 billion defense spending bill before the previous budget expired.
The White House described the move as a technicality that the president took out of an abundance of caution, and that it was his first veto.

When I went shopping, I noticed so many products made in China. No wonder we have high employment! Its ok to buy products like Japanese Hondas if they are made in USA. Come on, people. Lets roll! Dem recruits continue to head for exits

Democrats have lost yet another touted recruit, this time in Kansas.
State Sen. Laura Kelly (D) just announced her withdrawal from the race to face Rep. Lynn Jenkins (R-Kan.). She becomes the fifth formidable recruit to bow out in recent weeks.
“I have been forced to make a decision between honoring the pledge I made to the people in my Senate district and my firm conviction that the people of the 2nd congressional district deserve a truly independent voice in Congress,” Kelly said in a statement.
“This has been a very hard decision, but it is the right one.”
Kelly joins several recent dropouts, including businessman Jack McDonald, a well-funded challenger to Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) who announced last week that he wouldn’t run. The others are Ohio state Rep. Todd Book, who was running against Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-Ohio); former Tennessee Commerce and Insurance Commissioner Paula Flowers, who was running for Rep. Zach Wamp’s (R-Tenn.) seat; and Solana Beach City Councilman Dave Roberts, who was running against Rep. Brian Bilbray (R-Calif.).
Both McDonald and Kelly were cited in a late October memo from DCCC Chairman Chris Van Hollen (Md.) that touted the committee’s recruiting successes.
On top of that, Democrats have lost four incumbents in vulnerable districts to retirement recently. It has been a distinct shift, taking five seats off the map on offense and adding four on defense.

HONOLULU — President Barack Obama’s pick to lead the Transportation Security Administration has provided Congress inconsistent reports about — and regrets for — running background checks on his then-estranged wife’s boyfriend two decades ago.
Erroll Southers, a former FBI agent whose nomination has been delayed by Republicans for unrelated concerns, wrote to senators in November to correct what he called a distortion of his record. The delayed nomination has received renewed attention since the failed Christmas Day attack on an airliner bound from Amsterdam to Detroit.
“I am distressed by the inconsistencies between my recollection and the contemporaneous documents, but I assure you that the mistake was inadvertent, and that I have at all times taken full responsibility for what I know to have been a grave error in judgment,” he wrote in a letter to Sens. Joe Lieberman and Susan Collins.
“This incident was over 20 years ago, I was distraught and concerned about my young son, and never in my career since has there been any recurrence of this sort of conduct.”
In an October affidavit for the Senate committee, he initially said he asked a San Diego police employee to run a background check on his then-estranged wife’s boyfriend and was censured by his FBI superiors 20 years ago for what he said was an isolated instance.
But a day after the committee approved his nomination and sent it to the full Senate, he wrote to the senators and told them that he was incorrect; he said he twice ran background checks himself.
In the letter correcting the record, Southers also said he downloaded law enforcement records and shared them. He said he forgot the incident in 1987 or 1988.
The letter was first reported by The Washington Post’s Web site on Thursday. The letter, which was distributed to all members of the homeland security committee and whose contents were verified to The Associated Press by a Democratic source, was dated Nov. 20.
Lieberman aide Leslie Phillips said the independent who caucuses with Democrats continues to support Southers.
“Twenty years ago, Mr. Southers committed a serious error in judgment,” Phillips said. “He admitted that error and was disciplined for it. He went on to develop broad knowledge and build an excellent reputation in the areas of security and law enforcement. Mr. Southers was forthcoming about his past censure during his nomination process and about errors he made in recalling the details.”
White House officials lined up behind Southers’ nomination to head a Department of Transportation agency that lacked a confirmed chief when a suspected terrorist failed in his attempt to destroy an airplane on Christmas Day.
“Southers has never tried to hide this incident and has expressed that these were errors he made in judgment that he deeply regretted and an error that he made in an account of events that happened over 20 years ago,” said Nick Shapiro, a White House spokesman traveling with Obama on vacation in Hawaii.
“Southers’ nomination has not been held up over this as he has been entrusted with significant and increasing responsibilities in the area of homeland security over the years since, but he is being held up by Senator DeMint over a political issue.”
Southers’ nomination was delayed by Republican Sen. Jim DeMint, who fears TSA employees would join unions with Southers support. Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid, said he would force a vote on Southers by the full Senate in the new year, his spokesman said.
Southers’ nomination secured the backing from former colleagues, including the Republican governor of California who nominated him as his No. 2 homeland security adviser and has known Southers for 30 years, back to his days as a Santa Monica police officer.
“Erroll brings vast homeland security experience at the federal, state and local levels, along with hands on airport security expertise,” Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said in a statement. “California is safer and better prepared because of his hard work and dedication. Erroll is a committed public servant and highly qualified for the role.”
“He is a man of unquestioned integrity who, for the past 30 years, has dedicated his life to public service,” wrote Ronald Iden, now chief security officer for the Walt Disney Co., who brought Southers on as his deputy at the California homeland security office in 2004. His was among the letters sent to the Senate in support of Southers’ nomination.
Southers is currently the assistant chief of the Los Angeles World Airports Police Department. He previously taught at the University of Southern California, was a security consultant and a police officer.

Lee Iacocca said years ago in his book re: saving Chrysler the first time around get out of the ivory towers and on the shop floor, that is where you need to be, otherwise you will have no idea what is going on with your company-it’s problems, issues etc. In other words you will not have a clue.

Aaron Feuerstein, an Orthodox Jew, (born 1925) was the third-generation owner[1] and CEO of Malden Mills in Lawrence, Massachusetts.
When the Malden Mills factory burnt down on December 11, 1995, Feuerstein decided not only to use his insurance money to rebuild it, but to also pay the salaries of all the now-unemployed workers while it was being rebuilt. Feuerstein spent millions keeping all 3,000 employees on the payroll with full benefits for 6 months. By going against common CEO business practices, especially at a time when most companies were downsizing and moving overseas, he achieved a small degree of fame.

QUIETLY OBAMA’S CITIZENSHIP CASE REACHES THE SUPREME COURT
AP- WASHINGTON D.C. – In a move certain to fuel the debate over Obama’s qualifications for the presidency,the group “Americans for Freedom of Information”
has Released copies of President Obama’s college transcripts from Occidental College . Released today, the transcript indicates that Obama, under the name BarrySoetoro, received financial aid as a foreign student from Indonesia as an undergraduate at the school. The transcript was released by Occidental College in compliance with a court order in a suit brought by the group in the Superior Court of California. The transcript shows that Obama (Soetoro) applied for financial aid and was awarded a fellowship for foreign students from the Fulbright Foundation Scholarship program. To qualify, for the scholarship, a student must claim foreign citizenship.
This document would seem to provide the smoking gun that many of Obama’s detractors have been seeking. Along with the evidence that he was first born in Kenya and there is no record of him ever applying for US citizenship, this is looking pretty grim. The news has created a firestorm at the White House as the release casts increasing doubt about Obama’s legitimacy and qualification to serve as President. An article titled, “Obama Eligibility Questioned,” is leading some to speculate that the story may overshadow economic issues on Obama’s first official visit to the U.K. In a related matter, under growing pressure from several groups, Justice Antonin Scalia announced that the Supreme Court agreed on Tuesday to hear arguments concerning Obama’s legal eligibility to serve as President in a case brought by Leo Donofrio of New Jersey . This lawsuit claims Obama’s dual citizenship disqualified him from serving as president. Donofrio’s case is just one of 18 suits brought by citizens demanding proof of Obama’s citizenship or qualification to serve as president.
Note: Judith Koch alleges that Occidental has not yet released any records. I don’t know, but the AP release sounds serious!
Gary Kreep of the United States Justice Foundation has released the results of their investigation of Obama’s campaign spending. This study estimates that Obama has spentupwards of $950,000 in campaign funds in the past year with eleven law firms in 12 states for legal resources to block disclosure of any of his personal records. Mr. Kreep indicated that the investigation is still ongoing but that the final report will be provided to the U.S. attorney general, Eric Holder. Mr. Holder has refused to comment on the matter.

1)like I said – I ain’t getting my hopes up. Sounds promising, but…
2)if the shiite did hit the fan, I would think that Biden, Pelosi, and Reid would fall, too, since they all signed the DNC documents that attested to his eligibility.
3)if I’m right – and I’m proabably waaaaayyy off – but that would then set up Hilary to step in (VP, Speaker, Senate Majority, Secretary of State). Could this be what she had planned all along?

Happy New Year, Michelle, and thanks for the article on Aaron Feuerstein of Malden Mills.
I remember that fire well in 1995-it was very close to home and two of my cousins, who were on the Methuen, MA Fire Dept., helped knock down that massive blaze. A lot of tears in this area.
When Mr. Feuerstein announced that employees would continue to be paid after the mill was nothing but a burned-out shell, this area was in complete disbelief; the business burns to the ground, and you’re out of a job and a paycheck, right? Wrong, according to Aaron Feuerstein.
It was truly an amazing gesture on his part, especially right before Christmas.
Is this the way it should be? Yes, however, most business are simply interested in making the Almighty Buck and to hell with the people who are the guts of any company.
Mr. Feuerstein is truly one in a million and one of the most decent human beings on the planet!
BTW, this company manufactures Polartech fleece products-lightweight and very warm in fact, I bought a Polartech jacket when I was in AK back in the 1990s for a trip up to very frigid Point Barrow. If they’re selling Polartech in AK, you bet your butt it’s warm!
Please go buy some Polartech, just in case FL dips to a chilly 50 degrees :).

I just went to Malden Mills website to check out the Polartech. I see they have North Face gear. I bought my husband a North Face jacket with fleece underneath. He can’t believe how warm it is, he loves it! It’s been so cold here, I think I may need one, too.
SueK-I saw the 60 Minutes interview with Aaron Feuerstein while still in Chicago. What a guy. This is how most Chicago guys run their businesses. The interview was so interesting, wouldn’t you just love to only shop at companies that are run like this. I was very fortunate in my work life to work for people like Mr. Fueerstein (sometimes) it is the wife.

That fire was horrible, Chicagoans can relate-we had our bad fires, I can’t remember was it in winter time. So many times in Chicago the fire fighters would be out in sub-zero weather and they would have icicles on their helmets.

Around these parts, we’ve determined that 99% of the pain of winter is dressing in multiple layers of bulky clothing (scraping off the car is the other pain). For a lightweight, warm piece of outerwear to do the job is a blessing!
And you *know* it’s made right here in Mattatusetts (as Barky said).
We got snow last night and I still have the jacket I bought in Anchorage, so it’ll be used today to clean up!

Lee Iacocca said years ago in his book re: saving Chrysler the first time around get out of the ivory towers and on the shop floor, that is where you need to be, otherwise you will have no idea what is going on with your company-it’s problems, issues etc. In other words you will not have a clue.

BUT this is not all rosie, Malden Mills has filed for Bankruptcy TWICE since that fire. It was a BAD BUSINESS DECISION for Malden Mills to dish out all that money with no return. His decision would have been better to help those employees in need with help and saved the rest of the money to return the business opreation stronger, instead he used up all his capital and after had to go bankrupt twice and still is in a very weakened position.
But what he did was honorable.

I love the jacket and it is very stylish. I remember driving in Chicago when it was so cold and you were so bulky it was hard to move.

Michelle, Chicago winters are brutal. My friend had a Volkswagon and it was so cold we used to scrape ice off of the inside of the windows. That cars heater was worthless when it was -15 or anytime for that matter.

bob strauss @ 12:15 pm We had our adventures in Chicago in winter that’s for sure. A guy I knew had an old VW that part of the floor rusted out. He called it air-conditioning. We were always rescuing somebody, you got very good a pushing and scraping or whatever needed doing.
Every year downtown where parking is so limited, someone would shovel out a space where the car would go, some idiot would try to “steal” that place-you know what they did-ran water (how I don’t know-garden hose?) all over the car-you could call it frozen in place. This starts all kinds of fights.

Every fifth grader knows the U.S. Constitution requires a separation of powers through the three branches of government, the Executive, the Legislative and the Judicial. The President has overstepped his authority. This bill is constitutional and should be thrown out.
Why is there no uproar ANYWHERE about the White House involvement in writing and passing the health care bills in the House and Senate???
Would it be appropriate if a Supreme Court Justice sat in on the writing of a bill and pressured or bribed a Senator to vote for the bill? Of course not!
Then the present administration should never have been allowed to influence the health care bill. This may have occurred in past administrations but for the sake of righteousness and adherence to the Constitution, it must stop NOW! The entire process of this bill is a violation of the Constitution and should be thrown out.
Who can stop this legislation NOW before it progresses into mayhem and revolution?
Doesn’t anyone here care that this is happening? Am i just a voice crying in the wilderness?
