“Those who do not learn from history are bound to repeat it”…George Santayana?

“[I]n the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying. These people know only too well how to use falsehood for the basest purposes.”…Adolf Hitler Mein Kampf

“And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed
–if all records told the same tale–then the lie passed into
history and became truth. “Who controls the past,” ran the
Party slogan, “controls the future: who controls the present
controls the past.”…George Orwell, “1984″

A few moments ago I was discussing current events with one of my good friends. This friend is an avid reader and taught college level literature years ago. I explained to him that a lie does not have to be intentional to be a lie. I then used the unemployment rate example. I next explained that there were 2 broad categories of lies. Intentional and unintentional.

A few moments later, a friend/acquaintance walked in. A chap from England who works at the university. He believed that a statement had to be intentional to be called a lie. I disagreed and pointed to a nearby dictionary.

I was shocked but not surprised.

Welcome to the age of Big Brother.

Websters New World College Dictionary

“The official dictionary of the Associated Press”
Lie definition (noun)

“anything that gives or is meant to give a false impression.”

Reported at Citizen Wells March 9, 2015.

From Fortune.com February 4, 2015.

“Is the unemployment rate really just a ‘Big Lie’?””Clifton explains, accurately, that the Labor Department counts someone as employed even if they are working part time but want a full time job. It also considers people who have no job and haven’t looked for one in the past four weeks as “not in the labor force,” rather than unemployed. Clifton continues:There’s no other way to say this. The official unemployment rate, which cruelly overlooks the suffering of the long-term and often permanently unemployed as well as the depressingly underemployed, amounts to a Big Lie.”

“The unemployment rate isn’t a “Big Lie.” It’s simply one statistic among many that we use to judge the health of the economy.”

Clearly, since the unemployment rate gives a false impression, it is a lie according to the dictionary.

You have seen these quotes.

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it”…Joseph Goebbels

“Propaganda must not serve the truth, especially not insofar
as it might bring out something favorable for the opponent.”
… Adolf Hitler

Were these lies?

Jews in the Lodz Ghetto were told they were being resettled.

They were, right?

“In fact it was a all a complete lie, designed to facilitate the conduct of the deportations with as little trouble as possible. So far in 1942 over 44,000 people had been deported – see Lodz statistics – and every single one of them had made the 60km railway trip to Chelmno and been gassed the next day, bar the very few who were needed in the work groups to bury the dead.”

They were given a false impression.

Do you believe that was not a lie?
