“Millions of cretinous and amoral Americans still admire Bill and Hillary Clinton, the two foulest amoral slimebags that have ever besmirched the White House. These two foulmouthed and lying psychopaths have been, and still are, blindly supported by masses of non-clinical morons, diehard Democrats, and whorish liberal journalists and their editors.

The Clintons’ habitual lies, gutter language, anti-Semitic outbursts, and anti-black slurs have been documented by reliable writers but have been — and still are — routinely suppressed by the so-called liberal media.”…Reinhold Aman, Ph.D.

“I watched her on countless occasions blatantly lie to the American people and knowingly lie.”…Linda Tripp

“the Democratic Party overlooked the ethical red flags and made a pact with Mr. Clinton that was the equivalent of a pact with the devil. And he delivered. With Mr. Clinton at the controls, the party won the White House twice. But in the process it lost its bearings and maybe even its soul.”…Bob Herbert, NY Times February 26, 2001

Wow, from the Washington Post a scathing factual based article about Hillary Clinton.

Is this phase 1 of forcing her to bow out?

From the Washington Post July 5, 2016.

“Hillary Clinton’s email problems might be even worse than we thought

Here’s the good news for Hillary Clinton: The FBI has recommended no charges be brought followings its investigation of the former secretary of state’s private email server.

Here’s the bad news: Just about everything else.

FBI Director James Comey dismantled large portions of Clinton’s long-told story about her private server and what she sent or received on it during a stirring 15-minute news conference following which he took no questions. While Comey exonerated Clinton legally speaking, he provided huge amounts of fodder that could badly hamstring her in the court of public opinion.

Most importantly, Comey said the FBI found 110 emails on Clinton’s server that were classified at the time they were sent or received. That stands in direct contradiction to Clinton’s repeated insistence she never sent or received any classified emails. And, it even stands in contrast to her amended statement that she never knowingly sent or received any classified information.

Comey condemned Clinton and her top aides as “extremely careless” in how they handled classified information during her time as the head of the State Department, adding: “Any reasonable person … should have known that an unclassified system was no place” for that sort of information.

There was more — much more. Comey said Clinton had used not one but multiple private email servers during her time at State. He said Clinton used multiple email devices during that time. (She had offered her desire to use a single device for “convenience” as the main reason she set up the private server.) He noted that the lawyers tasked by Clinton with sorting her private emails from her professional ones never actually read all of the emails (as the FBI did in the course of its investigation). Comey said that while the FBI found no evidence that Clinton’s private server was hacked by foreign governments, it was possible that it had been. He argued that the Clinton lawyers had deleted emails they marked as personal that contained professional content, and that while the FBI found some of those emails in its investigation, it was certainly possible more existed that they were unable to track down.”

“It’s hard to read Comey’s statement as anything other than a wholesale rebuke of the story Clinton and her campaign team have been telling ever since the existence of her private email server came to light in spring 2015. She did send and receive classified emails. The setup did leave her — and the classified information on the server — subject to a possible foreign hack. She and her team did delete emails as personal that contained professional information.

Those are facts, facts delivered by the Justice Department of a Democratic administration. And those facts run absolutely counter to the narrative put forth by the Clinton operation: that this whole thing was a Republican witch-hunt pushed by a bored and adversarial media.

Now for the key question: How much do the FBI findings hurt her campaign?”

“The fact that the Secretary exclusively used and maintained a private email server, leaving her with sole and unfettered access to the complete universe of her emails, raises a number of transparency and accountability issues. The fact that the Secretary’s attorneys selfselected the emails to be shared with the State Department raises numerous questions about the completeness of the production of Secretary Clinton’s emails to the Committee, as well as more generally in response to other oversight inquiries by the House with which the Committee has been charged. These questions, which have been raised solely due to the actions of the former Secretary, necessitate a third-party review of the server to ensure that all responsive documents have been produced to the Committee.”…Trey Gowdy

“For a candidate already badly struggling on questions of whether she is honest and trustworthy enough to hold the office to which she aspires, Comey’s comments are devastating. Watching them, I could close my eyes and imagine them spliced into a bevy of 30-second ads — all of which end with the FBI director rebuking Clinton as “extremely careless.””

Comey, and the FBI find her guilty, result, no charges will be filed by the usurper.

Birds of a feather flock together… Charlotte, NC.

  5. oldsoldier80

Are you speaking about those two “do-do birds” that are stinking up the air here in Charlotte ?

  6. Like you, I’m only guessing, but to me no crime = no fatal damage to her campaign. These are the things people get fired for, not go to jail for. Incompetence is a real issue, but unfortunately she still comes out looking good compared to Trump. If she were running against any candidate with a record, it would benefit them. But it doesn’t help Trump. All the pounding on old scandals from the ’90s, Benghazi, and now this, just make him look small.

  7. citizenwells

All she has in commercials is Trump might do this or that.
    Her track record sucks.
Quoting the FBI dir will be a strong message.

What does our National Security Laws say about Hillary conducting government business over her PRIVATE server (intentionally) , resulting in bypassing any ACCOUNTABILITY to our federal government and the people for whom she worked ?

    Here is what our Laws say about that…you be the judge AND THE JURY as to the criminality of what she did ;

” Speaking to The Washington Free Beacon, Chris Farrell — a former Army counterintelligence agent and current lawyer for Judicial Watch — said Clinton and her two closest aides (Huma Abedin…THE MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD MEMBER) and Cheryl Mills) VIOLATED at least TWO federal laws.

Sending CLASSIFIED information on a PRIVATE server not covered under the umbrella of federal data security protocols “is a national security crime,” Farrell said.

While that seems like such an obvious matter of common sense, exactly how are Clinton’s server shenanigans criminal?

Farrell and the Beacon break it down:

Two laws apply to the mishandling of classified data on unsecure networks, Farrell said.

The first is 18 USC Sec. 1924,
“outlaws the unauthorized removal and storage of classified information. Penalties can include fines and imprisonment for up to one year” For 4 long years, only Hillary had access to the information on her server. She gave that job up and still maintained all the information and gave the government nothing until forced to do so under threat of jail..

That same statute was used to prosecute retired Army General David Petraeus, a former CIA director who provided classified documents to his mistress and biographer, Paula Broadwell. Petraeus was CONVICTED and sentenced to two years’ probation and a $40,000 fine as part of a plea deal in March.

A second federal statute that prosecutors could use to charge Clinton and her aides is 18 USC Sec. 793, a much more serious felony statute Farrell described as a “HAMMER.”

That law covers national defense information and people who misuse it to injure the United States or benefit a foreign power.
Those convicted of violating that law face fines and up to 10 years in prison.

Petraeus was hammered for something that, when contrasted with Clinton’s calculating behavior, seems almost inadvertent.
FIRST, IT SHOULD BE CLEAR THAT CLINTON INTENTIONALLY and on purpose, “HIDE” GOVERNMENT BUSINESS FROM BOTH THE GOVERNMENT, the PUBLIC, AND the PRESS. That is a clear violation of securities law in itself……

TWO FEDERAL LAWS have been violated…..that FACT is undeniable !

Did FBI Director Comer bother to look at those TWO laws? i don’t think so.

Now I think it has been established “beyond a reasonable doubt” that she grossly violated those two laws……the law is clear, the enforcement of those laws has been seriously flawed.

By allowing Clinton to slide on these very serious charges has intentionally endangered the security of our nation, placed our overseas embassies in danger, destroyed any confidence other nations may have had in our security,

Someone, our president, needs to explain to the public why Clinton has been allowed to avoid having to answer for her actions. But we cannot expect that to happen, because both of them have been cut from the same bolt of cloth.

If anything, FBI Director Comer displayed this morning, the depth and control that has been exerted upon our justice system by the Obama cabal.

I think the American people are madder than hell over this gross INJUSTICE of our legal system.

This story is not over till the fat lady sings…perhaps it will be delayed, and the verdict will be given in November.

But I assure you, it WILL NOT be forgotten !

  9. oldsoldier80

Now that’s pretty damn clear to this old soldier !

“Peak FBI Corruption? Meet Bryan Nishimura, Found Guilty For “Removal And Retention Of Classified Materials””

  11. What the Dems have against Trump is that he made his money hurting people, scamming, refusing to pay contractors, cheating at business, being lawsuit happy, lying about his level of wealth, lying about his charitable contributions, and refusing to release his tax returns (which would prove many of these charges). This isn’t even going into his unstable personality, just his past business behavior. They will paint him as a cheat, a deadbeat, a guy who keeps his money by refusing to pay his bills, an outsourcer, and an employer of illegals.

I really don’t know how it will all effect the outcome. But I think both sides have plenty of ammo.

  12. citizenwells

Trump looks like a saint compared to Hillary, the sociopath.

  13. oldsoldier80

Do you have any PROOF of your accusations against Trump ? If so, why haven’t they been made public ?

All I have heard is Hillary BLOWING HOT AIR about things she knows nothing about…..those who are blindly following her, are doing the same thing.

There’s a big difference in what you THINK and …what you can PROVE…..

I try very hard to not CONVICT someone on rumors and untruths…..but others are not so inclined.

  14. oldsoldier80

By the way…what would you call that gigantic SCAM that the Clinton’s are running…you know, the one they are calling…THE CLINTON FOUNDATION !…You know, the one that has received over 125 million dollars SO FAR from the Muslims….

and by the way, a very rich MUSLIM has just announced he is donating 150 million dollars toward getting CROOKED HILLARY ELECTED… much for Hillary’s character, and so much for how HONEST that bitch is…..

It’s Mikey, M-I-K-E-Y. And I didn’t make any accusations. I predicted what the Dems will say in campaigning. I’m not even a Democrat!

James Comey was previously the DA in Manhattan, and the Deputy AG under John Ashcroft. I trust that he knows what will or won’t fly IN COURT better than anyone posting here.

  18. Invisible Mikey — disappear, troll. And stay there.

  22. oldsoldier80

My dear M_I_K_E_Y (opps sorry M_I_K_E_Y)

I dont’ think too many people who post here gives a ” tinkers damn ” about what those corrupt democrats will say…I surely don’t ! The post you made sure sounded like accusations to me. You nor the democrats have provided any proof of what you are saying….so pl;ease PUT UP or SHUT UP…..

If you think James Comey is above being corrupted by Loretta Lynch and Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and CROOK HILLARY, please come to see me, I have a Bridge in Brooklyn…I want to sale you real cheap .

if you are really concerned about the national laws Clinton clearly
violated, I refer you to the post made by Citizenwells at 2:34pm… might learn something if you go to the referenced pages and the case noted……

Finally, you may trust anyone you choose to trust, that’s your right as a citizen…but don’t come in here and try to push that “trust Hillary” your selling off on the people who post here….think again.

I DID NOT COMPOSE THIS POST…but it says exactly what i have saying since 1 pm……

Federal Law: Title 18. Section 2071

    Can it be any clearer?

Former United States Attorney General Michael Mukasey tells MSNBC that not only is Hillary Clinton’s private email server illegal, it “disqualifies” her from holding any federal office.

Such as, say, President of the United States.

“If you do this, or that bad thing, you’ve essentially disqualified yourself as being the leader of the free world,” said Mukasey, referring to the illegal server and the illegal handling of classified materials.

Mukasey specifically points to one federal law, Title 18. Section 2071.
For those of us who do not have United States Code committed to memory, here’s what it says:
Whoever willfully and unlawfully conceals, removes, mutilates, obliterates, or destroys, or attempts to do so, or, with intent to do so takes and carries away any record, proceeding, map, book, paper, document, or other thing, filed or deposited with any clerk or officer of any court of the United States, or in any public office, or with any judicial or public officer of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.
Whoever, having the custody of any such record, proceeding, map, book, document, paper, or other thing, willfully and unlawfully conceals, removes, mutilates, obliterates, falsifies, or destroys the same, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both; and shall forfeit his office and be disqualified from holding any office under the United States. As used in this subsection, the term “office” does not include the office held by any person as a retired officer of the Armed Forces of the United States.”

Yes, it explicitly states “shall forfeit his office and be disqualified from holding any office under the United States.”

    Shouldn’t voters know that?
is it really necessary to debate this point any longer…CLINTON is GUILTY and our Chief Law Enforcement officer failed to do his duty !

That should tell every American exactly what kind of government we now have…a sorry bunch of Chicago bastards who deal only in criminal activity.

  25. This is good….Hillary proves she is a liar!

Rush said Comey was Hilliary’s Fitzgerald.

  27. AND………

  30. ………I BELIEVE…….

July 5, 2016 Lieutenant General William Jerry Boykin USA Ret. @ Family Research Council
    Ok I fouled up.

In case you think that I don’t read what everyone writes, I do and I have had my head handed to me over the comment that FBI – Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Comey is an honorable man.

Well you are right and I sure used a bad choice of words so I apologize.

Actually, I should have said that he previously had a reputation for being an honorable man. As it turns out, he is just another hack for the Barack Obama administration.

    Think about the following points:
    1. There are clearly two standards of conduct when it comes to handling ‪#‎classified‬ information; ‪#‎Clinton‬ standards and everyone else’s standards. A former ‪#‎CIA‬ director under President Bill Clinton, John Deutch, was guilty of mishandling classified info but ‪#‎JanetReno‬ refused to prosecute him and Slick Willy pardoned him his last day in office. The rules just do not apply to the Clintons or their cronies.

    2. Lets trace the sequence of events here:
    a. Bill and Attorney General Lynch meet in a “No photos” meeting on the tarmac in Phoenix.
    b. Hillary announces that she wants Lynch to stay as her AG a few days later.
    c. Comey does a news conference to announce that he will not recommend prosecution.
    d. One hour later the POTUS is campaigning with Hillary.

    3. We are supposed to believe that there was no ‪#‎conspiracy‬ in all this. This is total ‪#‎corruption‬ and ‪#‎government‬ abuse not to mention that it is an insult to the ‪#‎American‬ public’s intelligence.

    4. Comey said that “No reasonable prosecutor would take such a case”. Well I bet I could find one who would. He has proven that she is a liar.

Furthermore, he admitted that she was extremely negligent. Well that is prosecutable. So maybe he was really saying that The United States Department of Justice has no prosecutor who would be reasonable enough to take the case.
That point I would believe since our justice department seems to have a propensity for being very selective in what they prosecute and it rarely includes people like the leaders of the almost 300 ‪#‎Muslim‬ groups who were listed as ‘unindicted coconspirators’ from the Holy Land trial in 2008.

These groups were named in ‪#‎Federal‬ court as front groups for the ‪#‎MuslimBrotherhood‬ yet the ‪#‎DOJ‬ will not prosecute.

    5. Comey was clear that she had what is called “Special Access Program” (SAP) information in her emails.

Let me tell you that SAPs are the most sensitive Intel programs in the nation and they are oversighted by Congress with very tight controls on them. When compromised, lives are frequently endangered. This is inexcusable.

Note: I am personally angry and find myself wanting to scream at all the Hillary Clinton supporters who care not that she left 4 men to die in ‪#‎Libya‬ or that now she has potentially endangered more lives.

This has reached a point that even her supporters have to realize that she cannot be the next ‪#‎president‬.

Yea I know, that was also a stupid statement but I feel better having said it
Boykin didn’t get to be a Lt.(3 starts) General by being stupid. He writes with convictions and he writes the TRUTH.

This FBI solution to Hillary’s email situation IS NOT over by a long shot….in fact, the games have just begun, and Hillary’s going to take it up the yazzo before it’s over.

  32. oldsoldier80…….
……….this old hawk agrees with every word of your last comment. Hope you had a great 4th sir.

  33. …..YESTERDAY…….
……….the Manure hit the fan, and the repercussions are only beginning! The particular statute being used DOES NOT REQUIRE INTENT………it only expresses GROSS NEGLIGENCE as a prosecutorial base. Intent was never proven in the Petreaus case, yet he was PROSECUTED, AND CONVICTED. There is a great deal of anger brewing resultant of Comey’s decision. This decision SMACKS of collusion, and outright ignorance of the WRITTEN LAW. This is a classic representation of the WORD TWISTING, AND EQUALLY TWISTED INTERPRETATION OF EXISTING LAW.

  34. Clinton’s, ‘loophole” !!!!! So much, for equal justice, according to the article, she’s exempt from prosecution. Would have liked to see these laws cited !!!!

  35. BUT………
………it was only the little office fan that the manure hit. WAIT UNTIL the MAIN FAN is STRUCK BY THE MANURE. That could happen ANY DAY NOW! Lets not forget the Lucas Smith CERTIFIED COPY OF SOETORO’S KENYAN BIRTH CERTIFICATE! We need to keep it permanently posted!. Just because he leaves office the INVALID 8 years of his alleged administration will still remain and as a FELONY can still be prosecuted. There is no statute of limitations on FELONY CRIME. Nor is there any statute of limitations on FELONY criminal behavior of politicians. But sadly it appears that the notion of OUT OF SIGHT>>>>OUT OF MIND will most likely prevail where the BASTARD is concerned as well.

  36. oldsoldier80

    oldsailor84…good morning my friend

Indeed I did sir….next to Christmas, the most important day is July 4th… wife says I’m far to the right…way right of Aillia the Hun….she says when I’m cut, I bled Red, White, and Blue…..I’m a Patriot and proud of it…as you are too….

But I’m so damn sick of what I see happening in my country now….there is nothing wrong with the land, it’s still the most beautiful country in the world…it’s the sorry bastards that are running her into the ground that must be changed……or the FEMA camps will soon be open for business….

The FBI yesterday showed all America just how deep this corruption has penetrated into all branches of our government…and we have but one man/child to blame for this……I have lost all respect for our federal law enforcement and well as every other aspect of government….

Thomas Jefferson said it best; He said “Tyranny is defined as a government doing business they call LEGAL, but that same thing is illegal for it’s citizens”……..that pretty well explains exactly what is happening now…

Jefferson also said, ” “When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty.” ….I could not agree more with the old gentleman.

I hope the decision by comer yesterday causes a ground swell of people who finally wake up to the INJUSTICE that has taken over this nation. But, I am also rational enough to know this will never happen….we will continue to have 65% of the people who don’t give a shit what happens as long as they have their cigarettes and beer. Then of the other 35%, 20% will be nothing but functional illiterates who are easily lead by anyone with a fancy tune to play…then there is the final 15%, of which you and i are a part…..

We are the rebels…we are those citizens that don’t buy everything that politicians try to sale us. We are the problem children to that group. now, according to this government we now have, we have been declared ‘domestic terrorist’ because we love our country and we ” will not go quitely into that good night” …

We are a thorn in the ass of those tyrants and they fear our…..that is good. But, we do not fear them, we despise them.

They fear us, because we are aware of the game their play….it’s called, “bait and switch”….there has not been a ‘parasite politician’ born that does not play that game….Say one thing, do another is the norm for them…be they Republican or democrat.

I really think Donald Trump does not fit into that mold at this time….I hope and pray if he gets elected that he will keep vermin like that at arms length.

Finally, comes November; I predict that less than 35% of people who could legally vote in America will do so (the rest are those cigarette and beer crowd)….As a comparison, I was in Vietnam during the peak of that war when that war torn nation held a general election…. they had an amazing 96% of people turn out and vote…..

I guess we need a war to wake the American people up !

  37. oldsailor84, I hope your right about the law !!!! Just Breaking – Comey to testify on Thursday !!!!

  38. James………
………..she is NOT EXEMPT from prosecution as such. Mzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.Clinton IS NOT ABOVE THE LAW,…..rather it was the choice of Comey not to pursue prosecution………..BUT she is NOW IN EVEN WORSE POLITICAL TROUBLE than before Comey PUBLICALLY BLEW UP HER LIES. BTW the statute being used as the measuring stick DOES NOT SPECIFY “INTENT”…….IT MERELY STATES “GROSS NEGLIGENCE”. there IS A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE.
Yes it would seem that Mzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Clinton is EXEMPT from PROSECUTION, but when the LIBERALS behave as they are behaving they only provide Donald Trump with an additional abundance of ammunition. I have the belief that he will know how to make it turn around 180 degrees and bite the liberals right on their hemorrhoids. However it is the PUBLIC who he must conquer if he expects to win the wacky house in November. Sadly he has a LONG WAY to go. I pray that he will be successful in his efforts.

……….will NOW BE TRIED in the COURT OF PUBLIC OPINION! Only the MORONS among us, along with the PIMPLY FACED, STINKING A$$ED, CRIMINAL SLIME,AND DRUGHEADS OF AMERICA will support her……..unfortunately the criminal element in America grows exponentially as each day passes. This includes POLITICAL CRIMINALS as well. …… OPPOSITION VOTERS must outvote the liberals. Make no mistake there are going to be thousands of ILLEGALS voting as well, and NOBODY WILL STOP THEM. Their votes will be counted, along with the votes of the DECEASED……….again without intervention!

  40. bob strauss

  41. oldsoldier80……….
………..I have a gut feeling that Comey was, in addition to his statements sending a CODED MESSAGE for all Americans to comprehend. I also believe that there was a substantial restraining force applied to him. But he carefully detailed all of Mzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. POS lies, and methodically blew up every one of them…… IN PUBLIC where it counts! I believe that he did in fact squarely strike the POS exactly where she needed to be struck. I doubt that his words will be soon forgotten, and perhaps they will be expressly remembered at voting time, by all voters.

  42. citizenwells

    oldsailor, I agree.

  43. Breaking News – Romanian hacker Guccifer found dead in Virginia jail cell, apparent suicide ????

  44. James………
…………I have my doubts that any testimony by Comey will convey anything different to his statements of yesterday…….even if he is placed under oath. The obvious restraining force placed upon him is a very substantial one, and has to be coming from a paygrade far above his own…..if you get my drift! However this clearly demonstrates the level of corruption within the entire Federal Government. It even has even permeated the DOJ. I am afraid that sooner or later the mandates set out in the Declaration of Independence, will have to be applied. This was the case in 1776, which today we are seeing a near carbon copy of.

  45. bob strauss

BREAKING: Romanian hacker with access to Clinton emails found dead in jail cell

Christian Times Newspaper has learned that Guccifer, the Romanian hacker currently being held on charges for hacking Hillary Clinton’s personal email…|By admin1

  46. James………
……….I just read the account of the death of GUCCIFER, the hacker of the Clinton EMAILS. I pray to God that he had his act covered with several others, who will now make all of the hacked emails PUBLIC…….WORD FOR WORD, and ALL OF THE EMAILS!……..If as substantial as I expect her ship will soon be headed for the bottom, and she will be on board.

  47. ……….IF…….

  48. I have been expecting PUTIN to post his TWO CENTS WORTH. If he is in possession of such emails from Mzzzzzzzzzzz.POS I have a gut feeling that he would post all of them…….if only for the purpose of showing Soetoro that he DOESN’T RULE THE WORLD…….like he seems to think he does, and to show the world that Mzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.POS isn’t on his favorites list either. We all are aware of the Uranium ONE ILLEGAL transaction, and the involvement of Mzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.POS in that transaction.

  49. citizenwells

“The claim didn’t get very much traction until 5 July 2016, when FBI Director James Comey announced that the Bureau would not be pursuing charges against Hillary Clinton. That announcement kindled interest in the earlier report that Guccifer had mysteriously disappeared from his jail cell ahead of an FBI interrogation.

The rumor originated with a single source: the blogger known by the pen name “Sorcha Faal” of the political conspiracy site RationalWiki describes the outlet as “sensational” and “outrageous”:”

  50. WHETHER……….
………Guccifer is dead or alive, doesn’t make much difference in what people might now be thinking regarding Mzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.POS. I would agree that for somebody to post untrue crapola seems to tell a tale about that person as well. What HAS MADE A DIFFERENCE is Comey’s words. Now Mzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz POS will face an even more protracted crowd everywhere she goes. Comey done the only thing he could do……he hit the ball into the hands of the PUBLIC and it will re appear in November.

  51. oldsoldier80

i have not had time to go through the emails…yet

Here is but one of the 30,000 emails that WikiLeaks released concerning a message from Sidney Blumenthal to Hillary Clinton. the guest of the email is to keep Clinton informed on Bob Woodward’s writing of a book about Obama and the war in Afghanistan…..the contempt between Obama and Clinton is clear. It is quite apparent that at this time Clinton and Obama WERE NOT the best of buddies…..interesting reading, and it shows how all the ‘actors’ play their parts in this drama we are now engaged in…. they always refer to Obama as “the boss”……

There’s only one very big problem in dealing with Woodward in this manner: Once the boss opens the doors to spilling the secrets, many of his subordinates feel liberated to “tell their side of the story.” By the time each has exhausted tales of his own heroism and the shortcomings of his fellow senior officials, well, no one looks terribly heroic. Let’s start with Obama, who emerges from the pages ofObama’s Wars as he is—brilliant, emotionless, abstract, focused, and confused, a Chicago law-school professor in presidents’ clothes. He obviously wanted Woodward to portray him as a brilliant intellectual leader of a government that was not giving him too much help in solving the Afghan mystery, but that he trudged on, doing the best anyone possibly could under these terrible circumstances. The worst circumstance, as Team Obama alleged to Woodward, was that the Pentagon leadership and the U.S. generals did not give him the real choices he was asking for. He wanted options for troop increases below, even far below, what the generals were giving him. He didn’t get them. He wanted a strategy for how U.S. forces would be drawn down after they reached their projected peak of about 100,000 (more than three times the number George W. Bush left him). The military didn’t provide him with that, either. As they say in Missouri, “Give me a break.” If the commander in chief of the United States doesn’t know how to get what he wants from the U.S. military, he might want to do something about that. And some of the many generals in the White House who he picked to guide him might have told him how to go about that task. To cut to the chase: Obama didn’t understand what he had to do—tell Defense Secretary Bob Gates to tell the generals either they meet the president’s wishes or they will be fired. Republican presidents do just that. And so, as Woodward describes, Obama had to write the strategy all by himself. This was and still is an awful situation that springs from two sources. One is that the president has just not been clear enough about his thinking and objectives for Afghanistan, and the military and the rest of us must have real clarity to pursue wars. Woodward has this right. Here are a few Obama quotes that illustrate the problem. The president told Woodward that he didn’t think about the Afghan war in the “classic” terms of the U.S. winning or losing. “I think about it more in terms of: Do you successfully prosecute a strategy that results in the country being stronger rather than weaker at the end?” What on earth does that mean? Or try this one, to Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) about whether the July 2011 deadline to begin withdrawal was firm: “I have to say that. I can’t let this be a war without end, and I can’t lose the whole Democratic Party.” Does that mean Obama really believes in the war, but his party doesn’t? Or to White House aides: “This needs to be a plan about how we’re going to hand it off and get out of Afghanistan.” So, if he wanted such a plan, he should have gotten such a plan. He is president after all. Which leads to the second problem: When a president is not clear about a tough problem, the military smells vacillations. And they sure don’t like vacillation when it comes to dispatching their men and women to war. Americans don’t fathom well the military mentality. The military in most countries throughout history doesn’t like to go to war; they like to build up their arms and overall strength. But once in war, they want only more troops, fewer restrictions on their use, and above all, victory, victory, victory. Since Vietnam, they smell only vacillation among Democrats, and they don’t like it. For their part, Democrats see insubordination and worse among the military toward them, and they don’t care for the suits either. It’s not a happy circumstance. Woodward didn’t explore this underlying reality, which is critical for Americans to understand. breakAd The White House clash with the military could get worse over the latest news about Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s firing over naughty things said about the White House to a reporter. According to a preliminary Army investigation, the general—and UNCLASSIFIED U.S. Department of State Case No. F-2014-20439 Doc No. C05773961 Date: 08/31/2015 perhaps even his senior Army aides—were not the sources of those nasty quotes. It was some other guys—you know, the usual culprits, the Navy and civilians. There will be further formal inquiries on this, but nothing good will come of them. There’s another important thread running throughout the Woodward account that, I believe, he gets more wrong than right. That is, Woodward’s repeated insistence of open and bitter policy brawls in the good old Situation Room (the inner sanctum for White House meetings) over Afghan policy. Mr. Instant Historian paints a picture of a war of all against all. My information has always been that there was relative agreement on major policy. Based on my sources, there is no doubt that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Defense Secretary Bob Gates, and Joint Chiefs Chairman Mike Mullen were almost always quite cordial and in full lock step. They, along with the NSC Adviser Jim Jones and field commanders like General McChrystal and General Petraeus, are the key players. Of course, Vice President Joe Biden and Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel were the only regular critics of where policy was heading. The generals did lobby for their positions in public—in advance of presidential decisions. And that’s a big no-no. But by that standard, almost all Obama’s top advisers did as much. The day after his West Point speech last December, where he set the firm date of July 2011 to begin unspecified U.S. troop withdrawals, almost all the advisers publicly stated that maybe one didn’t have to take this date too seriously, that everything was “conditions based.” That group of rebels included Gates and Clinton. So, if anything, most of Obama’s top counselors were more or less united—sometimes against where he seemed to be going. Here is what Petraeus had to say to Woodward on the subject of goals, and it’s a stunner: “You have to recognize also that I don’t think you win this war. I think you keep fighting. It’s a little bit like Iraq, actually…. Yes, there has been enormous progress in Iraq. But there are still horrific attacks in Iraq, and you have to stay vigilant. You have to stay after it. This is the kind of fight we’re in for the rest of our lives and probably our kids’ lives.” The brilliant general said as much to others over the last year. It’s enough to knock your socks off. So far, there are no heroes to this narrative, only self-described heroic skeptics of the war and warriors who would fight on forever. Doubtless, President Obama does not want to fight an open-ended war. He’s sworn to that time and again, and I believe him, despite his history of calling for “victory” and “defeat” of the Taliban and al Qaeda. But what the Woodward book demonstrates is that Obama and his team just don’t know how to get from here to there. So far, there are no heroes to this narrative, only self-described heroic skeptics of the war and warriors who would fight on forever. Leslie H.
