“You talk o’ better food for us, an’ schools, an’ fires, an’ all:
We’ll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don’t mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow’s Uniform is not the soldier-man’s disgrace.
For it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Chuck him out, the brute!”
But it’s “Saviour of ‘is country” when the guns begin to shoot;
An’ it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ anything you please;
An’ Tommy ain’t a bloomin’ fool — you bet that Tommy sees!”…”Tommy”, Rudyard Kipling

From the Daily Mail September 24, 2013.
“British hero of the mall massacre: Ex Royal Marine with a handgun saved 100 lives as terrorists ran amok”

A former marine emerged as a hero of the Nairobi siege yesterday after he was credited with saving up to 100 lives.

The ex soldier was having coffee at the Westgate mall when it was attacked by Islamists on Saturday.

With a gun tucked into his waistband, he was pictured helping two women from the complex.

His story emerged as sporadic gunfire continued to ring out from inside the mall early today as Kenyan security forces battled Al Qaeda-linked terrorists into a fourth day.

Despite Kenyan police assurances that they had taken control of the building, a security expert with contacts inside the mall said at least 10 hostages were still being held by a band of attackers, possibly as many as 13.

The former soldier is said to have returned to the building on a dozen occasions, despite intense gunfire.

A friend in Nairobi said: ‘What he did was so heroic. He was having coffee with friends when it happened.

‘He went back in 12 times and saved 100 people. Imagine going back in when you knew what was going on inside.’

Sources said the soldier was in the Royal Marine and now lives in Kenyan. He cannot be named for security reasons.

  1. “Tommy ~ Rudyard Kipling Poem”

    At YouTube:

“Tommy Atkins (often just Tommy) is slang for a common soldier in the British Army. It was already well established in the 19th century, but is particularly associated with World War I. …”

  2. CW…..another Kipling fan heard from ……..

When I was young, wild, and a single buck sergeant stationed with the 11th Airborne Division in Munich Germany in 1956, many of my comrades and I would head for the Beerhalls down on the Strasse when the weekend came and we grew tired of jumping out of perfectly good airplanes……

We often quoted “Tommy” during out drinking bouts…..the soldier who forgot his lines had to buy the next round……

Needless to say, I bought a many rounds for my comrades…..but I also got a lot of free beer too!

After becoming an officer and getting married, my wild and youthful days were over, but I never lost my love for the poems of Kipling…….

Ah yes…”It was Tommy this and Tommy that, and “Chuck him out the brute”,
But it’s Tommy, “Savior of ‘is country” when the guns begin to shoot”…

I ain’t no Tommy anymore…..but thanks for reminding me of my Glory Days……

I salute all the past, present, and future “Tommy’s” for the bravery they must display on a daily basis……….It isn’t easy being a Tommy regardless of the branch of service you may serve in.

These aren’t Tommys’ that Charlie Waller sings about…but they will answer to the call of Doughboys….

“Dame Vera Lynn, DBE (born Vera Margaret Welch on 20 March 1917) is an English singer and actress whose musical recordings and performances were enormously popular during World War II. During the war she toured Egypt, India and Burma, giving outdoor concerts for the troops. She was called “The Forces’ Sweetheart”; the songs most associated with her are “We’ll Meet Again” and “The White Cliffs of Dover”. …”

  5. Hi All,

OldSailor phoned me today; he’s fine, but his computer has bought the farm. If it can’t be repaired, he’ll get a new one.

He sends regards to everyone and said he’ll be back as soon as he can; I’m sure he’s got a lot to say after being away for a little while :).

  6. Good morning CW et. al,

It’s simply surreal! I watched Sen. McCain throw Cruz under the bus and then the S.O.B. supported ObamaCare!!!!

  7. thanks SueK for the update on OldSailor…

Did anyone here remember the powerful 1957 Stanley Kubrick movie “Paths of Glory” with Kirk Douglas? Near the end of the movie is a scene with all the soldiers in a bar. The owner brings out a cute German girl who is told to sing for the troops. The scene will speak for itself. I just found out while searching that Stanley Kubrick MARRIED Christiane Harlan soon after finishing the movie. Lucky Boy!
PS – Glad to hear only OldSailor’s computer is down.

  12. Thanks RMinNC.

  13. No problem CW….I just hope the rest of America wakes up to this Obamacare madness…..

Reference your post on “Paths of Glory”….

War is Hell regardless if it occurs in 1917 or 2013……nothing good comes from war…only death and destruction.

  16. “Lilil Marlene” and “We’ll Meet Again” are indeed beautiful songs. My mother, who is now in a nursing home waiting to die, used to sing “Lili Marlene”, right up until she experienced a series of TIAs (mini-strokes) that eventually triggered the dementia she now suffers from.

Those songs make me cry. Not so much because they remind me of what my mother used to be, but because they bring to mind an entire bygone era that only the return of Christ will bring back.

  22. AirForceBrat,
So saddened to hear about your mother and know that this is a very hard time for you. May God bless and grant you and her His peace.

I agree about yesteryear. Being at the upper end of life, I do often think back at the way things used to be here in America and find it hard to believe what just the last five years have done to us. We must keep the faith and never, never give up.

  23. Air Force Brat

Thanks so much for your kindness, cabbyaz. It’s very, very much appreciated.

  24. There are a lot of things in life I can’t do anymore, but one that I could do was “stand with Cruz” during his marathon the other day and night. I listened to most all of it – rather like an honorary vigil, if you will – and figured that if he was willing to physically stand there, the least I could do was to thoughtfully listen and absorb what he had to say – in the comfort of my recliner. Forget all of the talk about possible ulterior political motives – Let’s stay in the here and now and seize the moment. Later I tweeted all of the GOPers whose mailboxes were full. They DO pay attention to tweets.

One thing we are so prone to do is constantly project into the future. I do it, too, but am convinced that too often we miss TODAY. TODAY we have now. Tomorrow is not here yet. I once had a physical therapist, who was putting me through the paces of regaining strength in a fractured knee, admonish to “Stay in the present”. By focusing right on “the present moment” with full intensity I was much more able to lift that weak, disabled leg.

I’m going to go out on a limb now and be bold. Frankly, at this moment I don’t care about Cruz’s possible presidential aspirations. Yes, like most of you, I am a firm NBCer, but that issue is not going to enter in NOW – at this point, not with me anyway. Consternation now over something which may never happen only serves to dilute the fervor we need TODAY to rid ourselves of the abominable O’care. Only my heart speaking.

  25. cabbyaz…..good afternoon friend.

You are so correct…..that was a good post….there is only three phases of TIME…….

The PAST is history and there is nothing we can do about it now. We like to think back to how things were, and wish we could relive them, but we know we can’t and it’s only ‘wishful” thinking.

Then we have our FUTURE…. all of our tomorrows….but tomorrow never seem to come…there will always be a tomorrow, but we may not be here to enjoy it.

Then we have our NOWs…..this is all we have. It is all anyone has.. We all live in the HERE and NOW….

However, I will admit some of us, at times, like t relive our past, and others seem to want to live in the future.

But in reality,in everyone’s reality, all we have is the NOW.

Enjoy every moment of this time in life…it could be our last..

  26. Thanks, RM, for your good response. You bring so much to the table here, and in your post you round out the three phases of TIME. Very good! Thanks!

  27. AFB @ 11:52 am,

Bless your heart. It is so very difficult to watch a loved one fade…… and to add insult to injury, to watch your country fade as well. May God comfort you.

  28. Air Force Brat

Thanks, SueQ. The contrast of how she used to be, versus how she is now, is so sad to contemplate. Especially since there’s no history at all of dementia, Alzheimer’s, etc., on either side of her family. Those mini-strokes can do so much damage, yet most of the time, people aren’t even aware that they’re having them. One day, though, she’ll be well and whole again, and will be raising roses and cooking magnificent food, just as she did here on Earth.

  29. Remember this next time you go to the grocery store…….

Barilla: ‘Gays can eat someone else’s pasta’

Anger is boiling over at the chairman of the Barilla pasta company after he vowed to only feature heterosexual couples in commercials — and added that anyone offended by his anti-gay stance could buy a different brand of noodles.
Guido Barilla told Italian radio on Wednesday that he would never use a gay family to promote the world’s leading brand of pasta, according to The Guardian.
“For us the concept of the sacred family remains one of the basic values of the company,” Barilla said. ”I would not do it but not out of a lack of respect for homosexuals who have the right to do what they want without bothering others…[but] I don’t see things like they do and I think the family that we speak to is a classic family.”
When asked if he was worried about a possible backlash from the gay community, he said: “Well, if they like our pasta and our message they will eat it; if they don’t like it and they don’t like what we say they will…eat another.”
His remarks immediately led Aurelio Mancuso, chairman of the gay-rights group Equality Italia, to say: “Accepting the invitation of Barilla’s owner to not eat his pasta, we are launching a boycott campaign against all his products.”

    “Obama’s ‘Fake’ Twitter Followers Explained”

“Barack Obama has 36.9 million Twitter followers, 19.5 million of whom, it turns out, are fake. This is a very disturbing sign for Obama’s opponents, as it demonstrates just how much appeal the president still has with his key support base, namely those who identify most closely with him on a personal level — fake people.

That’s right: Barack Obama and his millions of Twitter followers, more than half of whom are “his people,” namely fakes. You are living through something rarely seen on this Earth. This is the age of the Void: we are under the global control of a fake philosophy, ruled by fake leaders who give fake “great orations,” and justify their actions with fake histories and fake science. There is no place for reality here — for the true, the good, and the beautiful. Lies, consciencelessness, and the aesthetic of ugliness have won the day. In short, Being is on the wane. If you don’t exist, this is your moment.”

Make a suspicious transaction or can’t account for your money as a private citizen, however, and they will seize everything you own and treat you like a financial terrorist.

There are no warrants, no charges, no court proceedings. They just take it. And if you don’t comply, they’ll send an IRS SWAT team through your front door and imprison you.

What’s frightening about the experience of Terry and Sandy Dehko is that just months prior to their seizure of their assets the Internal Revenue Service completed an audit indicating that all of their records were legitimate, and their small business was operating within the guidelines of Federal tax law.

    No matter.

When surveillance state flagging algorithms spotted them depositing suspicious amounts of money just below the $10,000 required federal reporting limit into their bank account, a necessity for the Dehkos because their insurance only covered up to $10,000 in losses, they were red flagged by automated monitoring systems as possible money launderers.

Their $35,000 was subsequently seized after the IRS filed a secret warrant (a lot of that going around these days) accusing them of “structuring.” Because of the nature of civil forfeiture laws they now have to fight for their own money and prove their activities were legal. The IRS required no proof whatsoever.

    An accusation was enough.

These heavy handed practices will not get any better going forward, especially considering the fiscal state of our nation.

The IRS and other government agencies are booming, hiring on thousands of new employees for enforcement, and arming them with assault weapons and ammunitionfor those who reuse to comply.

Last year the government took in over $4 billion in forfeiture money. How much of that was from Americans like the Dehkos, who did nothing wrong?

One day soon, they will come for your money, too – and probably a whole lot more.

Home Visits per Obamacare ! Get Ready,.. Nurse Rachet Comes Calling

It’s in the bill. Health and Human Services is making grants to states and agencies who are willing to perform “evidence-based home visits” connected to ObamaCare. What is the purpose of these visits? The grant guidelines don’t exactly say, but they do spell out in detail who might receive them: ( after the visits are made, I guess we will be told the purpose, however, I have a real good idea already )

    a) Eligible families who reside in communities in need of such services, as identified in the statewide needs assessment required under subsection (b)(1)(A).

    b) Low-income eligible families.

    c) Eligible families who are pregnant women who have not attained age 21.

    d) Eligible families that have a history of child abuse or neglect or have had interactions with child welfare services.

    e) Eligible families that have a history of substance abuse or need substance abuse treatment.

    f) Eligible families that have users of tobacco products in the home.

    g) Eligible families that are or have children with low student achievement.

    h) Eligible families with children with developmental delays or disabilities.

    i) Eligible families who, or that include individuals who, are serving or formerly served in the Armed Forces, including such families that have members of the Armed Forces who have had multiple deployments outside of the United States.

You realize what this is, right? Once the government (or “society” as liberals are fond of saying these days) is responsible for subsidizing your health care, they’ve got an inherent interest in your lifestyle. They’ve got a financial stake. If you were just paying the bills yourself, it would affect no one but you. But now that we’ve got a system of third-party payers mandated and subsidized by the government, it’s no longer just your business if you smoke or, I guess, if your kid gets poor grades.

    You will get a visit!….

Obamacare now owns your body and the personal conduct of you and your family….isn’t that nice…Uncle Sam cares !!!

    Taken from Canada Free Press…9-27-2013.

  34. Who was it that said; If you like your Insurance provider, You can keep your Insurance provided under Obamacare?…….Why that would be Mr. Obama.

Who was it that said; If you like your Doctor, you will be able to keep your Doctor?…Why that is also Mr. Obama.

Who is the biggest damn lier to ever hold public office…..Bingo, Mr. Obama
Just discovered this a.m.concerning insurance providers for the state of North Carolina.

Beginning October 1 under Obamacare, Blue Cross Blue Shield will be the ONLY health insurance provider serving the entire state of North Carolina in the new Obamacare exchanges, serving all 100 of the state’s counties. Its competitor Coventry Health Care, which is owned by Aetna, will only reach 39 counties.

That leaves 61 counties, or 61 percent of all the state’s counties, in a Blue Cross Blue Shield-only zone.

The battle between Blue Cross and Aetna is waging across the country, and Blue Cross is winning.

Aetna has opted not to participate in Obamacare exchanges in numerous states including New York, Connecticut, Ohio, Maryland, Tennessee, and Texas. …
    So…If you don’t like Blue Cross or Blue Shield, I guess your just S O O L
(need I spell that out ?)

  35. RM @ 12:02,

Thanks for posting that. I linked an article from The American Spectator back in August………….

The HHS defines an “at risk” child as one who resides in a family that includes people who have served in the Armed Forces, pregnant women under the age of 21 (regardless of marital status), users of tobacco products, children with low student achievement, and a long list of other such miscreants. The formal name of this boondoggle is the Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) Program, and it was created as part of the train wreck that President Obama, congressional Democrats and the legacy “news” media insist on calling the “Affordable Care Act.”

  36. SUEQ……..

You are welcome…….Our communist controlled government is not satisfied with just taking all of our money…they now want our body and soul too……

It looks like with this “Affordable Health Care Act” they will be taking our bodies……..but they WILL NEVER, NEVER HAVE OUR SOULS.

And that is what these bastards want most of all……our souls

  37. RM,

….Our communist controlled government is not satisfied with just taking all of our money…they now want our body and soul too……

If these articles are true, then they want our children’s and grandchildren’s bodies and souls as well. This will only happen over my dead body! I still have a lot of “Mama Bear” in me. Ain’t gonna happen. Period!
