“A 5-pound toy poodle named Pickle is being called a hero after jumping between its owner and a bear inside a North Carolina home Friday morning, according to TV station WLOS.
However, Pickle died as a result of his bravery, owner Tiffany Merrill said in a Facebook update. She told WNCN that the bear likely weighed 150 to 200 pounds and showed no fear of humans once it was inside her Black Mountain home.
“There was nothing I could do,” Merrill told WLOS. “I wanted to go out there and jump on the back of the bear and save my dog.”
The ordeal began just before 6 a.m. Friday, when she opened a door to let the dog out, Merrill wrote on Facebook.
“A bear come … in my house, my dog jumped in front of me to save my life,” she said in a series of posts. “The bear was right in my face…It jumped (on) my couch to try and get me.”
Merrill said she immediately began screaming for her children to close their doors, so the bear could not get into their rooms. “I thought I was going to die,” she said on Facebook.
Pickle saved her by first barking to distract the bear and then chasing it out of the house, she told WNCN.
However, once outside, the dog proved no match for the bear, she said. She says her 19-year-old son got the dog away from the bear, but it was too late.
Merrill rushed Pickle to an animal hospital for surgery, but the dog was too badly wounded, she said on Facebook. “My hero died saving me from a bear,” she wrote. “We lost a big part of our family.””

……….and that is why I still miss my little Brigett so badly. I was forced to have the little dog who I love dearly euthanized because her cancer had caused her a lot of pain. Most people have no idea the level of grief that a pet owner goes through when the animal passes. It is the same as that which you suffer when you lose a flesh and blood member of your family. Brigett was euthanized in August of 2016. I still feel it. It was the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my life…….and certainly one of the most painful.

………..the story about little Pickle was extremely saddening. This little dog went after the bear in an attempt to drive it away. Here is a 5# dog up against probably a black bear, which can be extremely aggressive. They range throughout NC, and when they invade homes are usually after food. There was once a lifetime friend of mine who moved to Ashville area to be with his ailing brother. Not long after he moved there a black bear attempted to enter the mobile home which my friend was living in with his brother. Fortunately for both the owner had recently had a security type of steel door installed, along with an exterior steel barred security type of protection. He done this because just a few months prior a black bear had tried to invade another mobile home nearby which also was equipped with a steel security entrance door. The owner of that mobile home also kept a 12 gage semi auto shotgun close at hand and loaded with Remington Express (high brass) 00 buckshot just in case a bear was successful in entering the mobile home. When I learned about what had happened there I made a suggestion that instead of a shotgun with 00 buckshot they should be looking for a 30-06 caliber rifle.instead as a stand by. I say this because the matt of fur on any bear is almost like a bullet proof vest. Shotgun pellets would not penetrate the frontal fur matt of a bear. A 30-06 high power rifle will penetrate the matted fur. In actuality I personally would probably keep a Weatherby 300 Magnum handy just for the extra ounce of protection the magnum load offers. One correctly placed round from a Weatherby 300 will kill a 900 lb Brown bear in it’s tracks. 260 grain slug moving at over 3000 FPS.
