“I have read many obituaries. I always look for the ones of Word War II veterans. It is my way of thanking them for their sacrifices. Today I was presented an obituary that left me in awe and with respect for a shining example from the Greatest Generation. It is fitting that the world celebrate and give thanks for the life of Pastor Gerald C. Primm, a war hero and man of God.

“Gerald joined the Army Air Force during WWII to fight for his country. He became a Fighter Pilot flying the P-38 Lightning. During the war years he flew 56 combat missions (Note: only had to fly 50 but volunteered for 6 more). His exploits as a fighter pilot ranged from starting his European service in Casablanca, to starting his combat missions in Mateur, Tunisia in Northern Africa and in escorting bombers to Sardinia. After Sardinia was liberated by the Allies, he was stationed at Sardinia where he suffered from a bout of yellow jaundice. From Sardinia Gerald was stationed at Gioia del Colle on Italy proper.
He flew six combat missions out of Gioia del Colle – the most harrowing was the mission to escort bombers to bomb a ball-bearing plant in Wiener-Neustadt, Austria. When the bombers arrived at Wiener-Neustadt they had to abort their mission due to weather, but this just started the travails of Gerald as bandits (enemy) were spotted and Gerald counted about 25 of them and then another 35 were spotted for a total of 60. Outnumbered by 60 to 16, Gerald’s plane was fixed upon and a bullet knocked out his hydraulic system and one engine, thus his wing flaps were not maneuverable and his landing gear would not deploy. Gerald dismissed bailing out over Yugoslavia and decided to skim the mountain tops and glide over the Adriatic Sea. To compound Gerald’s problems a German plane was coming in for the kill and one of Gerald’s fellow pilots, Jim Advey, came to the rescue and drove the enemy fighter away. They remained life-long friends after the war. Gerald’s Wiener-Neustadt escapade ended as he spotted an airfield north of Foggia, Italy and Gerald crash landed at 130 miles an hour without the plane somersaulting down the runway.
The remaining number of his 50 missions would be flown out of Foggia airfields which included escorting bombers to bomb the infamous Ploesti oil refineries in Rumania. Other exploits included flying from England to Algiers and having to emergency land on Gibraltar because one engine had failed. But the most noteworthy assignment of the war came about after Gerald had received the promotion to captain and volunteered for more missions (6) beyond his obligatory requirement of 50. At this time he was called into the office of Lt. General Ira Eaker, Mediterranean Commander, USAAF at King Victor Emmanuel’s Palace where he was asked if he knew about the upcoming invasion of Southern France. Once Gerald said no, Eaker informed him that he had been selected to fly Lt. General Jacob Devers, Supreme Allied Commander of the Mediterranean, in a specially modified P-38 to view the invasion on August 15, 1944, called Operation Dragoon. This Gerald did as he and the General, as well as 7 other Generals flew out of Corsica to view the invasion of Southern France by the Allies.
For his exploits in WWII Gerald received the Distinguished Flying Cross awarded for “Heroism or Extraordinary Achievement” and the Air Medal with nine oak leaf clusters. In addition he received the Asian-Pacific Theatre Ribbon, Europe-Africa-Mediterranean Theater Ribbon with three battle stars and Distinguished Unit Citation.
After the war Gerald attempted to pick up his college education that had been interrupted by the war years by attending the UNC-Chapel Hill and moving to Texas to attend Baylor University. But a higher calling was in the offing for Gerald as he felt led to enter the Christian ministry as a Southern Baptist Preacher/Pastor. At about the same time he met the love of his life Ethel Brown at the First Baptist Church in Sanford where Ethel was Educational Director. Their marriage on December 28, 1948 formed a magnificent partnership in serving their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ until Ethel’s death on January 10, 2006. “
“Gerald also took a stand for Civil Rights as evidenced by his bold and heroic actions in the 1950′s at his church in Raleigh which was located beside Shaw University, a black college. Some of the leaders of the church told Gerald that four Shaw University Students (African American) were attempting to enter the church to worship and these officials would not let them. Gerald rebuked them and told the officials to let them come in to worship. The next week Gerald, from the pulpit, resigned as pastor saying the courageous and truthful words to some members of the congregation that “their hearts were blacker than the faces of the students they barred from the place of worship”. This incident made statewide, national, and international news and brought Gerald great admiration from the African-American communities in Raleigh and threats from others. To the church’s credit they received the rebuke from their pastor and voted to rescind his resignation.
Gerald Primm was a war hero and a hero of the faith, but to the ones who loved him and knew him the most he was a loving friend, pastor, mentor, husband, brother, son and father. “

All of those who flew our fighters and our fighter bombers were a very special breed of people. These birds were somewhat primitive when measured by todays standards, and a couple of them were outright dangerous to fly, because they had some unsavory flight characteristics,when certain types of maneuvers was attempted. Most of our fighter pilots were of a cut of cloth who learned quickly,and they learned how to get around the quirks of their airplanes quickly as well. A few didn’t learn and did not live to think again.Even the early P-51 Mustangs had their quirks.The early versions were equipped with Allison engines and were severely under powered. It wasn’t until a flight mechanic advised a General who he had been talking with that there was a dire need for a much more powerful engine if the aircraft was to be used in combat. So the general started sniffing around,and he happened upon the engine characteristics,and power specifications of the Rolls Royce Merlin engine. With even low level boost it developed nearly a third again the HP of the Allison, and allowed a much greater service altitude. It did not take the General long to produce a frontline prototype equipped with a Merlin. One of the line officers volunteered to be the first person to take the bird up and WRING IT OUT. When he returned he climbed out of the aircraft and proclaimed it a REAL WINNER. From that time on the North American P-51 Mustangs were equipped with the Merlin engine from the factory. Not long thereafter the P-51 was equipped with the 4 bladed fan propeller.After these two retrofits the top speed of the P-51 went well over 550 knots.The Merlin engine was built in America by license to Packard Motor Company. The Merlin was so successful in the P-51 that the same exact engine configuration was eventually used in the P-38 as well. The P-38 used 2 engines. Needless to say that the Lockheed P-38 Lightning,enjoyed a new life,and pilots assigned to them LOVED them. Also by equiping the P-38 with two Merlins it’s performance was also enhanced,and its top speed increased by nearly 180knots. This aircraft was used in both Europe and the Pacific. Sadly the Bell P-39 Aircobra, was never retro fitted with the Merlin engine. I have heard that the venerable Curtis P-40 was fitted with the merlin engine,but the war was nearly over and the prototype was never really tested in combat. Interestingly it was a P-38 which,was so equipped that shot the Japanese bomber out of the air in which Admiral Yamamoto was riding. The remains of the aircraft was found a few years ago, and the aircraft contained both a skeleton,and a Samurai sword. This certified that Yamamoto had actually died in the crash of that bomber.

At the outset of WW2 there was a hell of a lot of people still out of a job because of the depression which extended clear up to the war. Therefore there was also a hell of a lot of people who were at the RIGHT PLACE, at the RIGHT TIME………….we call it AVAILABLE these days. Thousands joined the Army Air Corp ( as it was then called),thousands joined the MARINE Corps, thousands joined the Navy,athousands joind the Army,and thousands joined the Coast Guard. There was also our civilian Navy,the US Maritime service as it was then called. Today it is known as the US Merchant Marine.

The U.S. has been unable to secure thousands of potentially dangerous shoulder-fired missiles known as “MANPADS” that were leftover from the Qaddafi regime in Libya, CBS News has learned.
MANPADS stands for “Man-portable air-defense systems.” According to a well-placed source, hundreds of the missiles have been tracked as having gone to Al Qaeda Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), an Algeria-based Sunni Muslim terrorist group fighting for control in Mali.
“I would imagine they’re trying to get their hands on as many weapons such as MANPADS as they can,” says CBS News national security consultant Juan Zarate. “It’s a danger both to the military conflict underway in Mali and a real threat to civilian aircraft if, in fact, terrorists have their hands on these MANPADS.”

What you are aluding to is the North American P51 Mustangs which were retro fitted with the advanced FAN 4 bladed prop,and the Merlin engine they often flew over 550 knots (airspeed) in flat and level flight. In a relatively shallow dive angle they were able to approach the speed of sound,but in so doing they also encountered some control difficulties. They were subsequently red lined at 550. It is particularly interesting to note that some P-51`pilots successfully chased down, and destroyed many Nazi V-1 pulse jet propelled (BUZZ BOMBS) which flew close to 600 MPH. I have also read that the Lockheed P-38 accomplished the same fete, after they were retrofitted with the Merlin engine. Unfortunately they experienced control problems early on and like the P-51 were red lined around 500 knots.(airspeed).At the time this rendered our two main fighters able to outperform all enemy aircraft both Japanese and Nazi. Interestingly a Nazi pilot tried to do a straight up maneuver against a very late P-51. Because of the added HP and the fan propeller the P-51 continued straight up after the Nazi fell off. The P51`pilot counted to 5 then broke off the climb also and he executed the maneuver so well that he was exactly where he need to be for his gunnery convergence. He said he yawed the aircraft slightly and opened up on the Nazi whose airplane began to come apart. I read once a long time ago where the gunnery convergence occurred …..I believe that it was around quarter of a mile or so.When you are being hit with six .50 caliber lines of fire it literally chews the enemy aircraft to pieces. That was then…..today the pursuing pilot simply fires an air to air missile and immediately turns away because the missile is designed to keep the target in sight,overtake, it and destroy it. When a pilot attempts to fly tight circles in an attempt to confuse the missile direction control, our newer missiles can fly even tighter circles,and still overtake and destroy the enemy aircraft. For a short period of time our F4 pilots could out run many of the North Vietnamese SAM 1 missiles. It wasn’t long until the improved SAM 2 missiles started coming up against them. That is when they discovered that they could evade the Sam2 missiles by flying real tight circles. The sam 2 used an infrared device (HEAT SEEKING) guidance by flying tight circles the device locked onto it’s own heat trail and kept going around and around in circles until it ran out of fuel. Of course the intended victim had long since departed from the looney chase. The manpads are the same thing as the STINGER airdefense system.

For ANYONE to return psychologically from such greivous injuries requires a very special sort of person. During one deployment in the Korean war we was assigned to the area in the Sea of Japan,which is where many of the pilots who flew the AD1 Skyradiers which had sufferred ground fire hits upon their oil coolers,usually were able to fly their aircraft to before the engines locked up from lack of lubrication. I remember one of these pilots being horribly shot up,and it became necessary for the UDT pilot retrievers to get him out before the airplane sunk. Much of the time these aircraft only remained on the surface for a few minutes,and if the pilot was not out of the airplane he went to the bottom of the ocean with his airplane. That is why the UDT group trained people to get a pilot out of a sinking aircraft really fast. I remember one pilot who was really shot up. He screamed in pain as he was extracted. Immediately after his extraction he was given a huge shot of morphine. The sight and sound of it caused many of us to almost cry. Thanks to the UDT he is alive today.

The link you provided was that of Wikipedia,and the Rolls Royce Merlin engine. They show the many variants,and design changes of the engine and the subsequent uses of the variations. I have to admit that there was a few airplanes listed that I was unaware even used a Merlin at all. Always interesting to me. I had never looked it up at Wikipedia. Once you have heard a Merlin engine in operation you never forget the sound. They all produced a unique sound that no other aircraft engine produced. Similary when you have heard a radial engine you never forget the unmistakeable THUMP of that configuration either. In the old days of piston engine airliners, the airplanes were referred to as VIBRATORS, if they used radial engines.
The Douglas AD`1 Skyraider was initially used during WW2 for the exact same purpose that it was used during the Korean war,which began only 6 years after WW2 ended. It was used almost exclusively for ground forces support. They were referred to as “SPADS”……..and so nicknamed after a WW`1 airplane which was also big, and awkward. The Korean war variant used an R33 engine which was a 2 row radial engine and each row containing 9 cylinders, for a total of 18 cylinders. These engines were veritable BEASTS,and often difficult to start. The airplane was not much different. It flew at only 180 knots, and could often be severly damaged by rifle fire from the ground.

Being present when such terrible wartime suffering took place would be a memory that never fades. Often I reflect upon the numbers of injured U.S. military in Iraq and Afghanistan and can’t help but wonder if the numbers exceed the deaths simply because of better methods of treating the casualties. Then these precious vets have to go through life with such horrible disabilities. During the world wars and Korean I believe that death took a lot of our best and we didn’t have as many survivors accordingly. Of course, life is very precious even if it has to be lived under severe circumstances. Then suicide becomes more common. War is hell.

I just heard Charles Krauthammer on Bill O’Reilly refer to a meeting held at Blair House with the pResident a few years ago in which it was fully discussed that there would be ObamaCare problems re. keeping your doctor, etc. Then Charles goes on to point out that it was after that meeting when the pResident continued to make his lies repeatedly about being able to keep your doctor and plan. Period.
O’Reilly acts truly shocked and challenges Charles by saying something to the effect, “This is very serious. You are accusing him of being a dishonest man….” He repeated it a couple of times. It is unbelievable to me that O’Reilly continues to drink the kool aid. WHY does he refuse to see what we all have known for years? Charles replied, “I call it like I see ’em.” I hope the exchange makes it to a video.
I saw it too, CabbyAZ. Hillary and OB lied about the Benghazi video too. If it were anyone else, this President would have been impeached, but OB can lie repeatedly and everyone looks the other way. It is amazing. I just don’t get it.

Charles Krauthammer was on “The O’Reilly Factor” tonight to respond to Bill O’Reilly’s Talking Points Memo.
In the Memo tonight, O’Reilly discussed the five big controversies plaguing the Obama administration. He said we can expect a bunch of “embarrassing hearings” on the VA scandal, but little else. O’Reilly predicted that Lois Lerner will never be indicted, we likely won’t get to the bottom of the Benghazi attacks, and that nothing will come out of the botched Fast and Furious operation.
Obama’s biggest problem though, O’Reilly said, is ObamaCare. He said that unions and employers are now arguing over who will pick up the tab for costs associated with ObamaCare, and that nobody is happy, except for those who are getting free insurance. Anger is likely to grow over the summer and fall, he said.
Krauthammer agreed with O’Reilly that ObamaCare is the scandal that will hurt the president the most, likely to affect Democrats in November and again in 2016.
“It’s the embodiment and sort of the symbol of this kind of Obama hyper-liberalism, an intrusiveness, and because it affects people where they live,” he said, adding that millions of Americans will be directly and negatively affected by the law.
Krauthammer stressed the president’s initial promise that if you like your plan, you can keep your plan, calling it a deliberate lie.
“You are indicting the president of the United States as essentially being a dishonest person,” O’Reilly said.
“I call ‘em like I see ‘em,” Krauthammer responded.

You, and I have been on earth for over 3/4 of a century. We both know what hard work is all about,and we both know left from right…..yet virtually everywhere we go,and anybody we try to talk with,don’t even seem to understand BASIC LANGUAGE. You ask them a simple question,and their only response is often only a blank look on their faces. When I go to our local hardware store and ask where I will find a certain product,and even after a lengthy description of what I am looking for he/she STILL DOESN’T HAVE A CLUE what the hell I am looking for. Either they are complete MORONS,or I am speaking in some other language. If the problem is with them how the sam hill did that person even get a job involving customer contact. Their bosses must also be numbskulls.
…………if that is the case then it is very likely that anybody who goes to the Birther Report aren’t even going to understand the Soetoro message at the beginning…which is followed by a CLICK. If 50% of those who go to the birther report can’t even understand simple english how the hell are they even graduating from GRADE SCHOOL? I saw that portion of the O’Reilly show tonight with Charles Krauthammer. Bill was trying to give Charles a hard time by saying he would have stated something more succinctly, but Charles gave it right back to him several times. It was funny, and went right over O’Reilly’s head. There’s a reason Rush calls him Ted Baxter.
In my opinion, Bill is playing dumb. He knows who Ozero is, but for some reason won’t admit it. Fox won’t let him or he is being threatened. I don’t know. It is strange, but Bill lets Charles tell some of the truth. Thank God for Charles.
