Flight 93 stewardess Sandy Bradshaw, Greensboro NC mother of 2 9/11 victim, Memories of Sandy Bradshaw live in abundance

From the Greensboro News Record September 11, 2011.

“Jeri Rowe: Memories of Sandy Bradshaw live in abundance”
“Turn the corner too quick, and you’ll miss the flight handbook behind the glass.

It’s 2,000 pages or so of print and diagrams, with only small notations of dates and two initials, written in cursive, near the front. The last notation: 9-01-01 . The two initials: SB.

But stop. See the cover, stained brown and wrinkled. Then read. It’ll sink in. This is — was — Sandy’s handbook. She carried it on her last flight, United Flight 93 , the plane that’s become one of America’s symbols of sacrifice.

We all know the story. Four terrorists hijacked the plane exactly 10 years ago today and turned it into a flying bomb bound for the White House or the U.S. Capitol.

They didn’t make it. The passengers and the crew fought back. That includes Sandy.

The Boeing 757 plowed into a field beside a grove of hemlocks, nearly two miles north of the tiny town of Shanksville, population 219 . The plane’s impact caused a crater 40 feet deep.

Only a few things survived. And some of those things belonged to Sandra Bradshaw, flight attendant, married mother of two.

Her Greensboro Public Library card.

Her family photos.

Her discount cards from Harris Teeter, Toys & Co. and The Fresh Market.

And her flight handbook.

It’s on permanent display at the Greensboro Historical Museum, in one of its newest exhibits, The Service and Sacrifice Gallery. In the gallery, beside a big photo of Sandy, smiling in a cockpit, are words written by museum archivist Stephen Catlett.

He calls the handbook “one of the museum’s most prized possessions,’’ and “one of the most emotionally charged and poignant artifacts I have ever handled.’’

During his 34 years of library and museum work in Philadelphia and Greensboro, Catlett has handled everything from the letters of American patriot Benjamin Franklin to the original manuscript of the Declaration of Independence, penned by Thomas Jefferson himself.

Yet, the handbook carried by Sandy — the chicken farmer’s daughter, the scrappy basketball player from Grays Chapel School, the 1981 grad of Eastern Randolph High — equals them in historical importance.

It’s a gift from Sandy’s husband, Phil. It came to the museum packed in three plastic bags. It wreaked of jet fuel. Catlett and his volunteers fumigated 21 pages at a time every day. It took months.

Today Sandy’s handbook carries the tell-tale sign of what happened.

It’s the brown stain, the stain of jet fuel. See it, and all you do is stare.

“It’s the closest someone can get to the real event,’’ Catlett says. “Listen to the stories, and they’re powerful, incredibly emotional. But a real artifact, even for a moment, it gives you that emotional connection to an event that no third-person account — no matter how well written — can do.

“This is a great treasure of American history. A sad treasure.’’

Sandy’s family doesn’t go see the flight handbook very often. For them, it’s too painful.

They remember Sandy in their own way — with pictures, memory boxes, special flags, roses and a garden, full of small concrete bunnies, at her old school.”

“Pat Waugh will always see the garden. She’s Sandy’s mom. In December, she lost John Waugh, her husband of 50 years . So, when she goes to the garden, she often goes alone.

It’s just a few miles south of her house. When she went one time, a big yellow butterfly flew around her four times, landed on the flowers and stayed. Waugh nearly lost it.

On Sandy’s headstone at Greensboro’s Forest Lawn Cemetery is a smooth rock painted with turquoise butterflies. The butterflies were painted by Sandy’s oldest child, Alex . She’s now 12.

On Friday, Waugh traveled to Shanksville along with 10 family members — that includes her granddaughter, Christi Ulander and Peele, one of her five children.

They expected to see big-time politicians during the dedication of the Flight 93 National Memorial. And a marble wall, with 40 panels.

Each panel will bear the name of a crew member or passenger who died in that field at 10:03 a.m. 10 years ago today.

And like the garden at Grays Chapel, like Sandy’s flight handbook in Greensboro, the marble wall will be poignant, too.

It shows Flight 93’s direction of travel in its final seconds, and a walkway rims the spot where the plane hit and disintegrated.

Pat needs to go. Since 9/11, she travels several times a year to Shanksville. She knows why.

“She came to me in a dream once,’’ says Waugh, now 68 . “She was standing with all these animals — you know she loved animals — and I ran over and hugged her. Just hugged her hard because I knew she came to say good-bye.”

  1. This story about Sandy Bradshaw still gets to me. It was very emotional preparing to post it.
    I did not know Sandy, but would have liked to. She is representative of the good people of NC
    and this nation.
    The criminal fanatics revealed their character, and we as a nation revealed ours.

  5. THANK GOD we did not have to listen to the muslim communist PERVERT bo and his LOVER-GAL hillary giving disgusting speeches on this SOLEMN DAY!

    It is disgusting that the PERVERT bill clinton was allowed to speak at the Memorial in Pennslyvannia after he was primarily responsible for the Trajedies on 9/11 because of his FAILURE to protect America from muslim TERRORISTS!

    AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry took a break from campaigning for president to return home to memorialize 9/11 victims Sunday morning

    “There is power in those sacrifices,” Perry said. “If our enemies’ goal was to demoralize Americans and paralyze us with fear, they failed miserably.”

    Prediction: Sarah Palin Will Not Run, Will Endorse Rick Perry

  11. http://www.libertarianrepublican.net/2011/09/sarah-palin-will-back-rick-perry-and.html

    Sarah Palin will back Rick Perry; and you can take that to the bank says Fund

    Libertarian Republican columnist for the WSJ John Fund goes down a laundry list of reasons why Sarah Palin will not be running for president, and will ultimately endorse her friend Rick Perry in his latest, “Why Sarah Palin Is Not Running.”

  12. http://www.newsmax.com/Newsfront/fund-sarah-palin-/2011/09/02/id/409556

    So if Sarah Palin isn’t running for president, what will she do in 2012? Even as a non-candidate, she has the potential to shake up the GOP race. In a recent slickly produced video producer by Team Palin that chronicles her bus tour of Iowa, Palin shakes hands with a girl in an “Americans for Rick Perry” T-shirt and then poses for a photo with the girl and her fellow Perry supporters.

    Prediction: Sarah Palin Will Not Run, Will Endorse Rick Perry

    A HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

    That’s funny!

    She’ll clean the floor with him. You can take THAT to the bank!!!

  14. http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2011/09/02/sarah-palin-may-endorse-rick-perry-why-she-could-be-a-2012-spoiler.html

    Sarah Palin endorses Rick Perry. The political marriage makes sense—they are fellow conservative populist governors. This endorsement would solidify Perry’s frontrunner status, especially with activists, and put him on a path toward winning the Iowa Caucus and quite possibly the nomination. Palin still has great sway among her fans, even if more and more conclude that she’s not serious about running for president. The Palin seal of approval for Rick Perry would be the kiss of death for Mitt Romney.

  15. http://activistsandairplanes.com/2011/09/02/prediction-sarah-palin-will-not-run-will-endorse-rick-perry/

    As far as predictions go, I’m at 100% so far. I predicted Mike Huckabee wouldn’t run about a month before his announcement. I don’t think I ever believed Donald Trump would run. I was saying Rick Perry would run a few weeks before he did and I called it on Bachmann long before she made the announcement.

    To be fair, it didn’t require a rocket scientist to make those predictions, but at least I’m part of the small crowd that was right on all of them. Will my prediction record end with Sarah Palin? And what is my prediction?

    My prediction with Sarah Palin is that she does not run and endorses Rick Perry. There are multiple reasons for this, none of which have not already been covered by others, but all of which play a role in me throwing my opinion of the scenario out there in the form of a prediction.

    1) The RGA Relationship With Rick Perry – Governor Palin, through the Republican Governor’s Association, has a relationship with Rick Perry. I can’t find any big evidence suggesting they’re “good” friends, but it’s clear they know each other and have never really been at odds. In fact, all evidence (and there isn’t a lot of it) suggests they strongly support each other and always have.

    2) Palin Endorsed Rick Perry’s Re-Election Campaign – Rick Perry faced a fairly tough primary challenge last time around. For a while it looked as if he might have actually been toppled by the more libertarian candidate in the primary. After a comment about “trutherism” on the Glenn Beck show knocked that candidate out, Perry pulled out ahead and won.

    That victory didn’t come without the help of Sarah Palin. In fact, Pain endorsed Rick Perry and hit the campaign trail for his re-election efforts. Now this doesn’t mean she can’t now oppose him, but doing so would be much tougher and call into question her own decision making in candidates she supports.

    3) The Tea Party Showdown – I keep asking myself “does Sarah Palin really want to go to political war with Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, Ron Paul and Rick Perry?” You have to keep in mind that all of these candidates have tea party support. Tea partiers have contributed to and volunteered for these campaigns, and running against them would mean running against factions of the movement.

    I could be wrong, but I just don’t think Palin wants to engage in that war.

    4) Campaign Infrastructure – I know Palin likes to “go rogue” in the way she does things, but even as a rogue candidate you have to have infrastructure of some sort. Media is great, but media alone does not turn out voters.

    Palin has almost ZERO campaign infrastructure in place in battleground states. Furthermore, there aren’t many folks with experience left and hiring a competent team this late in the game would be very difficult.

    5) Filing Deadlines – While no state ballot deadline has been crossed as of yet, there are a few on the horizon and Palin has to announce either way within the next few weeks.

    6) Continued Relevance – This one is vital. Palin is a media machine and few in politics are able to drive narratives like she can. Plus, Palin is a MAJOR figure in the modern day tea party movement. If Palin isn’t going to run, she’ll have to do something big to remain relevant. She’ll also need to do something with her active and eager support base.

    If Palin endorses Perry, it would seal the deal on giving Perry an almost overwhelming amount of tea party support. It would also keep Palin in a key position as an important player in the POTUS race. Palin would essentially become a king-maker in some ways, and would still be just as valuable int he eyes of the media.

    7) The Romney Death Blow – A few months back Sarah Palin turned up in New Hampshire on the same day as Romney and robbed him of headlines across the nation. Palin knows New Hampshire is Romney’s ticket and she needs to hammer him down regardless of whether or not she runs.

    If Palin were to endorse Rick Perry at a tea party event in New Hampshire, she would essentially deliver a death blow to Romney in his strongest state.

    In Iowa, Democrat leaning PPP reports that Rick Perry is now in first place with 22% with Romney at 19%. More surprisingly, PPP polled on Sarah Palin’s effects in the race. Surprisingly, for both Romney and Perry a Palin candidacy was statistically meaningless — both only dropping a single point. Palin herself came in below Ron Paul.

    Comments 25 Reprints & PermissionsWASHINGTON – Texas Gov. Rick Perry is peeling away endorsements from Republican members of Congress from Mitt Romney,

  18. It’s the 10th anniversary of 9/11; the last few threads have reflected this fact.

    Leo, could you give it a break with effing Perry for just one damned day?

    This day is not about him. Or you!

  19. A thought on today’s ceremonies:

    In his speech tonight at the Kennedy center, Obama points out again that America is not perfect.

    How often is he going to do this and why does he keep doing it? We are the country that does the most good on earth to help the most amount of people.

    AMEN.

  21. http://www.tampabay.com/news/politics/national/gop-candidates-debate-monday-in-tampa-ramps-up-florida-offensive-against/1191085

    Perry announced last week that he was “fully committed” to the straw poll and debate. Florida’s primary election will probably be in mid February. That vote could well decide the Republican nominee — especially if Perry wins earlier in Iowa or South Carolina, or both.

    Along with his surging poll numbers nationwide, Perry looks likely to be the Republican nominee when the party holds its convention next year in Tampa.

  22. http://washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/columnists/2011/09/they-said-reagan-was-too-blunt-too

    Texas Gov. Rick Perry has gotten all kinds of grief from the smartest guys in the room crowd in New York and Washington for calling Social Security “a Ponzi Scheme,” and “a monstrous lie to our kids.”

    I can’t think of a more fitting place to demonstrate a Reaganesque honesty than the Reagan Library, with former First Lady Nancy Reagan looking on benignly as a couple of her crisply-coiffed Liberal Mainstream Media friends do their best to discredit the heirs to her husband’s political legacy.

    Reagan himself often spoke just as bluntly about liberalism’s many sacred cows, and he invariably got the same sort of outraged responses from the smartest guys in the room crowd.

    Like when he said “government isn’t the solution, government is the problem.” They were scandalized when he called the Soviet Union an “evil empire,” too. And who can forget “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” Some of his own advisors were aghast that he was going to say that one.

    Now Perry is getting the business from the same crowd. And it started with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney – who knows a thing or two about appealing to the smartest guys.

    Of course Perry did NOT say he wanted to “abolish” Social Security, he simply called it what it is. It’s a classic Ponzi Scheme because money from the last investors must be used to pay the first investors. The fact Social Security is compulsory while a Ponzi Scheme is voluntary is beside the point.

    And it’s a monstrous lie to tell anybody under age 50 because everybody knows and has known for decades that the Ponzi Scheme’s days are numbered by the reality that too few new workers are paying into the system to fund payments to current and projected beneficiaries.

    You’ve heard of being “upside down” on a car loan? That’s when you keep trading in for a new model before paying off the old one. You transfer the outstanding balance on the old loan to the new loan. That’s just the way Social Security “works.”

    Like Reagan said in 1964, the only thing that “saves” Social Security is that Washington can always raise taxes.

    Except that it can’t. Only three workers pay in to Social Security now for every one beneficiary. The day is coming soon when it will only be two workers. Can you say “ruinous taxation?”

    And that’s why Perry is way ahead of the smartest guys in the crowd on this issue.

    Sure, the politically shrewd thing to say is to we have to “save” Social Security. It reassures the old folks without threatening the younger workers who must pay the taxes that fund the benefits.

    What the smartest guys in the room crowd apparently missed is that Perry also said this:

    “And people who are on Social Security today, men and women who are receiving those benefits today, are individuals at my age that are in line pretty quick to get them, they don’t need to worry about anything. But I think the Republican candidates are talking about ways to transition this program …”

    Perry appears to understand something Reagan knew very well: The smartest guys in the room crowd are slaves to conventional liberal wisdom and they are out-of-touch with the values and views of most Americans.

    Our political elites in New York and Washington are far more attuned to that conventional wisdom than to everyday Americans. If you don’t grasp that fact, you will never understand why three-fourths of the voters trust the people more than professional politicians.

    And that is why Perry’s candor may well prove to be his greatest asset in the months ahead.

  23. Tina | September 11, 2011 at 12:04 am |
    Agreed, FS. I think when you listen to everything Perry has to say, he concludes with the system needs to be reformed.
    ————————————————-
    Yes, if SS is not reformed then it will go bankrupt and none of the people who depend upon it will get anything. It will not be an easy fix and frankly I have doubts that SS can be saved but I appreciate that Perry is willing to try and I appreciate the fact that he has not come up with some simplistic approach like following the Chilean Plan which has resulted in extreme austerity measures and hardship in Chile.

    RUSH: They’re scared of Perry. They are scared to death of Perry. They’re petrified of Perry. They’ll always tell us who they fear. They’re not worried about Romney. They think they can beat Romney. They also think that they can scare Romney into being a little bit more compliant and less combative with Obama. I don’t think they think that about Perry. I think they are very much concerned about Perry, just as they are very much concerned about Sarah Palin. That’s what they’re telling us here.

    RUSH: Your buddy Stephanopoulos, transparent as he can be if he’s sidling up to Romney right now. Your interpretation that’s right on the money, you know exactly what that’s about.

    CALLER: The images, the guns and the, “Move to California if you support gay marriage,” and all the other things that, you know, Georgie put on last night was just amazing how much he loves Mitt now.

    RUSH: Well, they’ve got the same hair. You know, Romney and Perry have the same hair.

    CALLER: They’re truly showing who’s really gonna scare ‘em.

    RUSH: I think so. I think so. Since you say you’re watching “Georgie,” I haven’t watched a network nightly newscast I can’t tell you how long. It’s been years since I actually saw one. So I have to listen to your report to find out what happened. I didn’t know. I’m not afraid to admit this. I did not know that Stephanopoulos, all of a sudden, fell in love with Mitt Romney, but it doesn’t surprise me. It makes total sense. It’s totally understandable, given who they’re really afraid of out there.

    http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_051811/content/01125109.guest.html

    RUSH: Now, Rick Perry used to be soft on immigration, now he’s not. There’s no way you’re gonna hear Rick Perry supporting amnesty in any way, shape, manner, or form. He’s solid on that, plus pro-life. Rick Perry stands in opposition to inside the Beltway Washington elites, I don’t care what party they are.

    LIMBAUGH: If Social Security Isn’t A Ponzi Scheme Then What Is It?

    Limbaugh: “I Want To Applaud” Perry’s Claim That Social Security Is A Ponzi Scheme

    http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_081511/content/01125114.guest.html

    PERRY: What makes our nation exceptional is that anyone, from any background, can climb to the highest of heights. As Americans, we don’t see the role of government as guaranteeing outcomes, but allowing free men and women to flourish based on their own vision, their hard work, and their personal responsibility. We reject this president’s unbridled fixation on taking more money out of wallets and pocketbooks of American families and employers and given it to a central government. Spreading the wealth punishes success while setting America on course for greater dependency on government.

    RUSH: And here he hammers Obama on the recovery.

    PERRY: Now we’re told we’re in recovery. (laughter) Yeah. But this sure doesn’t feel like a recovery to more than 9% of the Americans out there who are unemployed. Or the 16% of the African-Americans, 11% of the Hispanics in the same position, or the millions who can only find part-time work, or those who have even stopped looking for a job. One in six work-eligible Americans cannot find a full-time job. That is not a recovery; that is an economic disaster.

    RUSH: Right on. Right on. Right on. Now, we edited the applause. The applause went on and on and on. We edited it of course for brevity.

    PERRY: For nearly three years President Obama has been downgrading American jobs; he’s been downgrading our standing in the world; he’s been downgrading our financial stability; he’s been downgrading our confidence, and downgrading the hope for a better future for our children. That’s a fact. It’s time to get America working again. (applause) So get our citizens working in good jobs and getting the government to working for the people again. You know, page one of any economic plan to get America working is to give a pink slip to the current residents in the White House.

    RUSH: Right on, right on, right on, right on. Here’s the final bite that we have.

    PERRY: America is not broken; Washington, DC, is broken. (applause)

    RUSH: Right on, right on.

    PERRY: I will not sit back and accept the path that America is on, because a great country requires a better direction; because a renewed nation —

    RUSH: Right on

    the most important information should be directed at discovering what it is that Obama and his puppet master have been up to. Anybody notice egypt yesterday?

    http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_062011/content/01125107.guest.html

    Rush:…comments by Rick Perry, and we have edited the applause. It was substantial. But we’ve edited the applause in the interests of time.

    GOV. PERRY: We need to stop apologizing for celebrating life.

    RUSH: Right on.

    GOV. PERRY: We need to stop apologizing –

    RUSH: Right on.

    GOV. PERRY: — for wanting to protect an individual’s right to build a business.

    RUSH: Right on.

    GOV. PERRY: We need to stop apologizing about stemming the tide of entitlement mind-set that’s out there. We ought to be proud of our efforts to give local parents and communities a say on how their children are educated, protecting that fundamental right of private property ownership. Our party cannot be all things to all people. It can’t be. And our loudest opponents on the left are never gonna like us so let’s quit trying to curry favor with ‘em!

    AUDIENCE: (applause)

    RUSH: Right on!

    GOV. PERRY: Let’s speak with pride about our morals and our values and redouble our effort to elect more conservative Republicans. Let’s stop this American downward spiral!

    AUDIENCE: (applause)

    RUSH: Ladies and gentlemen, you know what? I now know how you feel when you’re listening to me. I now know how you applaud it. I now know how you get all revved up when you’re listening to me. Damn straight. Finally! Why in the world do we apologize? This comes from this defensive position that you always end up in when you accept somebody else’s premise in an argument. He’s exactly right: Why apologize at all for celebrating life? Stop apologizing for wanting to protect an individual’s right to build a business? Of course, the MSNBC story: “Rick Perry delivered an unapologetically socially conservative speech,” as though he’s supposed to apologize. I just love this bite. We have this one and…let me see… a couple more. And again we’ve edited the applause just in the interests of time.

    GOV. PERRY: This administration in Washington that’s in power now clearly believes that government is not only the answer to every need, but it’s the most qualified to make essential decisions for every American in every area. That mix of arrogance and audacity that guides the Obama administration is an affront to every freedom loving American and a threat to every private sector job in this country.

    AUDIENCE: (applause and cheers)

    RUSH: All right. So he’s out there articulating the truth, he’s getting stupendous applause and yet, “Nah-nah-nah can’t have Rick Perry. He’s from Texas. He’s too close to Bush. We don’t want anybody from Texas! Bush is from Texas. We hate Texas — or not ‘we,’ but the voters. The voters don’t want anybody else from Texas.” This is the message from the elites, the inside-the-Beltway geniuses who like to tell us what we will and what we won’t vote for or who we will and won’t vote for. I think Perry understands who we are. We have a choice. We have a decision to make as Americans.

    GOV. PERRY: Will history view us as the generation of Americans that kinda collectively shrugged their shoulders and said, “I guess there’s nothing that I can do? Will we just watch our nation continue this slow backwards slide? Will future generations of Americans living a life without any direction or decision that’s not made by some bureaucrat wonder: “Why didn’t somebody do something?” I’ve got more confidence in America’s energy and character. I totally believe it’s time to reconnect with the greatest attributes of our nation, to regain that resiliant spirit and recapture that love of freedom, remembering its true price. We’re all facing the same challenges in America. I stand before you today a disciplined conservative Texan — a committed Republican and a proud American — united with you in the desire to restore our nation and revive the American dream.

    AUDIENCE: (applause)

    RUSH: Right on, right on. Again, we edited the applause there. Now, this is not sitting well with the Drive-Bys and the State-Controlled Media.

  25. Sarah Palin has really grown in her understanding of a broad spectrum of issues. She will be a great addition to the next Republican Administration if she chooses to go back into Government service

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0911/63166.html

    “What Rick Perry was trying to say I believe is that there needs to be reform. Status quo is not acceptable because these programs are insolvent…so he’s saying reform is necessary and we either reform these programs ourselves or the world capital markets will reform them for us.”

    While the first part of her comments trend toward the line of criticism that “Ponzi scheme” breeds fear in senior voters, Palin later underscored what Perry supporters have been arguing – that he is talking about a system fix and actually went further in that regard than Perry did in his own answer on the debate stage.

    For people gazing into the crystal ball for a sign of where Palin is headed, this will add another scrap toward the theory that she may get behind the Texas governor eventually.

    Texas Gov. Rick Perry has a wide lead over rival Mitt Romney in a new GOP presidential poll, and is viewed as having the best chance to defeat President Obama next year.

    Just hours before eight Republicans face off tonight in another key debate, the CNN/Opinion Research Poll shows Perry leading Romney, 30%-18%. More than 4 in 10 GOP voters also say Perry is the most electable candidate, compared with 26% who say Romney can beat Obama.

    CNN and the Tea Party Express are sponsoring tonight’s debate in Tampa, the first to involve groups that back the anti-tax, small government movement. The debate begins at 8 p.m. ET.

    Perry’s electability “may go a very long way toward explaining his rise in the polls, since three-quarters of all Republicans say they would prefer a candidate who can beat President Obama over one who agrees with them on major issues,” CNN polling director Keating Holland says.

  31. It is amusing to see how the demRats & rinos freak out over articles about how well Rick Perry is doing in the polls.

    It will be hilarious to see their reaction in the latest CNN Poll that shows that Perry’s lead has grown after the Reagan Library Debate since it clearly reveals that True Repulicans agree with Gov Perry on Social Security, the Economy and the rest of the important issues.

  32. New CNN Poll: Perry on top when it comes to electability

    “Perry doesn’t simply have the most support in a hypothetical ballot – he also tops the list of GOP candidates on every personal quality tested,” adds Holland.

    Thirty-six percent, for example, see him as the strongest leader in the field, with Romney second at 21 percent. According to the poll, 35 percent say Perry is the Republican candidate most likely to get the economy moving again, with Romney in second at 26 percent.

    Nearly three in ten say that Perry is the candidate who is most likely to fight for his beliefs, with Palin in second place at 23 percent and, significantly, Romney in a distant tie for fourth at just 11 percent.

    But Perry’s biggest strength may be the electability factor, with 42 percent saying he has the best chance of beating Obama next year. Some 26 percent say Romney has the best chance of defeating the president.

    With just over five months to go before then, Florida GOP officials say Mr. Perry has made significant inroads in the state since entering the race last month.

    He has hired one of Florida’s top consulting teams: the Tallahassee trio of Randy Enwright, Jim Rimes and Rich Heffley, who handled campaigns for President George W. Bush and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

    The Perry team has secured the backing of important fund-raisers such as A.K. Desai, an insurance executive, and Joe Fogg, former Florida finance chairman for Rudy Giuliani, both of whom are helping host a series of Perry fund-raisers this month.

    And he has won endorsements from state Rep. Dean Cannon, the House speaker, and state Sen. Don Gaetz, the designated next Senate president. “Those endorsements bring with them a lot of organizational people,” said Orange County GOP chairman Lew Oliver, who is also backing the Perry campaign.

    State Republicans say Mr. Perry’s decision to participate in the Presidency 5 straw poll in Orlando later this month has excited GOP activists.

    Rick Perry: I am going to be honest with the American people

    By Rick Perry

    I am going to be honest with the American people. Our elected leaders must have the strength to speak frankly about entitlement reform if we are to right our nation’s financial course and get the USA working again.

    For too long, politicians have been afraid to speak honestly about Social Security. We must have the guts to talk about its financial condition if we are to fix Social Security and make it financially viable for generations to come.

    Americans must come together and agree to address the problems so today’s beneficiaries and tomorrow’s retirees really can count on Social Security for the long haul.

  39. http://directorblue.blogspot.com/2008/09/jamie-gorelick-mistress-of-disaster.html

    In 2004, observers were “astonished” to discover that a key member of the 9/11 Commission had a fatal conflict-of-interest. Jamie Gorelick had served as a Deputy Attorney General under Bill Clinton from 1994 to 1997.

  40. http://directorblue.blogspot.com/2008/09/jamie-gorelick-mistress-of-disaster.html

    It was later revealed that Gorelick had established a pre-Patriot Act “wall” that prevented the foreign intelligence and criminal investigative communities from collaborating.

    The result: shortly before 9/11, Gorelick’s wall “specifically impeded the investigation into Zacarias Moussaoui”, the so-called “20th hijacker.”

    At the time, an enraged FBI investigator wrote a memo to headquarters which included the sentence, ‘Whatever has happened to this — someday someone will die — and wall or not — the public will not understand why we were not more effective…”

    The 2004 disclosure that Gorelick’s service as a 9/11 Commissioner was the archetypical conflict-of-interest should have triggered a cacophony of complaints and demands for a new investigation. Instead, the mainstream media turned deaf and dumb and the controversy faded into the background.

    Gorelick’s “wall” wrapped a blindfold around America just when it needed its vision to stop the attacks that killed thousands and which sucked a half a trillion dollars out of the economy.

    Where did Gorelick turn up next?

    Though she had no training or experience in finance, Gorelick was appointed the Vice Chairman of Fannie Mae and served in the role from 1997 to 2003. During that six-year period, she earned over $26 million.

    During Gorelick’s tenure, FNMA suffered a $10 billion accounting scandal, an ominous harbinger of the firm’s looming troubles. One of the falsified transactions helped FNMA hit earnings targets for 1998, which triggered bonuses for top executives including nearly $800,000 to Gorelick.

    Put simply, FNMA’s collapse helped touch off the current swath of instability in the financial system.

    It’s not often that one person plays such a key role in two unmitigated disasters.

    Democrat Jamie Gorelick is just such a person; that is why she has earned her nom de guerre “The Mistress of Disaster”.

  41. Pawlenty just endorsed Romeny. Interesting. I wonder why he did it so early in the race just before tonight’s debate? Is Romney trying to stop the bleeding? THE NEW YORK 9TH

    It’s a different poll but the same result for David Weprin.

    The left-leaning Public Policy Polling released a poll Sunday showing the Democratic state assemblyman running six points behind Republican Bob Turner in the special election contest for the congressional seat previously held by Anthony Weiner.

    The survey comes just a few days after a Siena College poll also gave Turner a six-point advantage, 50 percent to 44 percent.

    PPP suggests that President Obama’s sagging approval rating in the traditionally Democratic district — just 31 percent approve compared with 56 percent who disapprove — could be dragging down Weprin’s standing among voters.

  44. http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2011/09/12/cnn_poll_gop_voters_say_perry_most_likely_to_beat_obama_111293.html

    Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who has rocketed to the top of the GOP field since announcing his candidacy Aug. 13, not only appeals to Republican voters as the strongest leader and most likable candidate in the field, but also as the one most likely to defeat President Obama in 2012, according to a new CNN/Opinion Research poll.

    Forty-two percent of Republican voters say Perry has the best chance of defeating Obama next year while 26 percent say the same of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin comes in third with 7 percent saying she has the best chance of winning in 2012. Five percent say the same of Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Rep. Ron Paul.

  45. http://www.theatlanticwire.com/politics/2011/09/perry-still-running-away-gop-primary-new-poll/42335/

    The reason for the preference for Perry looks pretty clear from the poll: Republican primary voters want someone who can beat Barack Obama, and Perry’s tops on that list. According to CNN, 42 percent of voters leaning toward the GOP think he’s got the best shot of beating Obama in a head-to-head match up compared with 26 percent who like Romney.

    The survey also found Perry to be the “strongest leader” in the field by a 15 point margin over Romney. But those measures may not even be the most concerning part for Mitt. The former Massachusetts governor, whose staked his candidacy this time around on being the guy who says the word “jobs” the most, is even losing to Rick Perry on hypothetical handling the economy. From the poll: “35 percent say Perry is the Republican candidate most likely to get the economy moving again, with Romney in second at 26 percent.”

So many folks seem to think that all a POTUS has to do is wave a magic wand,and suddenlymillions of jobs materialise out of the air. The potus can only CREATE A BETTER BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT,(TAXES ETC). Until there is DEMAND supply will NOT increase. Supply will not increase unless there is a HELL OF A LOT LESS GOVERNMENT, trying to MICROMANAGE American business. If Perry’s intent is to take the FED out of American business then it is likely that he will accomplish something towards dragging America out of the SLIME PIT which Soetoro has dragged us INTO. I would applaud that accomplishment by itself. Whoever is elected POTUS is going to have to be a bit of a HOUDINI as well. If it is Perry I am sure that at least he is an NBC,and has a vague idea of what needs to happen

Political pundits have been dismissing Perry’s lead by claiming that early polls “mean nothing.” But when you examine this view closely, it turns out to mean “early polls meant nothing in the 2007-2008 cycle.” In general, early polls mean a great deal in Republican primaries. The 1996 Republican field was much broader, but Bob Dole had a very substantial early lead in the polls and won the nomination easily, losing only 6 states. 50. ………..which is a HELL of a lot more than our present SO CALLED POTUS seems to understand. A POTUS has only TWO HANDS. Just exactly how Perry would tackle a position that now requires an OCTOPUS, and eight hands………thanks to all of the ASSISTANTS TO THE ASSISTANTS who in turn answer to an ASSISTANT to Soetoro, and subsequently costing the taxpayer 3 times as much to accomplish………(IF OR WHEN IT EVER ACTUALLY GETS ACCOMPLISHED AT ALL.) 51. York: Will immigration cripple Rick Perry’s bid?
    (excerpt)
    Romney seemed clearly ready for a confrontation with Perry over immigration, but the debate moved on, and the moment passed. But there will be a reckoning, and probably soon, because on a number of key immigration issues, Perry’s positions will alienate a significant part of the Republican primary electorate. Romney or some other candidate is sure to take advantage of that.

    Start with the border fence. Perry opposes it. “Building a wall on the entire border is a preposterous idea,” he said recently in New Hampshire. “The only thing a wall would possibly accomplish is to help the ladder business.” Perry says he supports some forms of “strategic fencing in certain urban areas,” but that’s all.

    Then there are measures to stop employers from hiring illegals. Perry opposes E-verify, which is a program requiring employers to check the legal status of new hires. It has been very effective in stopping the hiring of illegals, but Perry does not support requiring private businesses to use it, and he doesn’t want state agencies in Texas to use it, either. “E-verify would not make a hill of beans’ difference in what’s happening today,” Perry said in a 2010 debate.

    There’s more:
    http://campaign2012.washingtonexaminer.com/article/will-immigration-cripple-rick-perrys-candidacy
    ***********************
    The immigration issue is something which Perry will have to address more fully. After all, he did oppose AZ’s immigration bill, and he also presided over the passing of TX’s Dream Act. Read it, if you dare.

  52. I for one do not really care WHO becomes the next POTUS, so long as he has a PROVABLE DETERMINATION, and NECESSARY MENTALITY to put America back where it was prior to Soetoro. If such a person is Perry then fine, I would vote for him. To date I am still not committed to anybody. I will get committed when I see the sort of actions coming from the candidate that I believe will take our country back where it should be. Polls don’t mean much to me. They can be rigged to say anything,anytime,anyplace. UP is DOWN,and LEFT IS RIGHT in the political world, until PROVEN OTHERWISE.

    [As I said at the Reagan Library recently, Social Security benefits for current recipients and those nearing retirement must be protected. For younger workers, we must consider reforms to make Social Security financially viable.]

Perhaps we could copy the “GREAT WALL OF CHINA” and put the unemployed to work building it along the Mexican border. There would be MILLIONS of people who might be willing to COMPETE for a position as STONE MASON at $1.00 per hour.(This would be a public works project),and FREE OF ORGANISED LABOR. Perhaps we could call the organisation the WPA, or if you want something more glamourous sounding lets call it the Civilian Conservation Corps.(The word Corps, does NOT MEAN “CORPSE”).

  62. Shouldn’t we press Perry’s position on e-verify? In the State of Colorado, opposition to e-verify is usually from the far left pro illegal immigrant gang.

    Or are we not allowed to ask any questions? Just submission….

  63. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/09/12/rick-perry-social-security_n_958443.html

    So far, there are no signs that Perry has suffered great damage over the Social Security issue. A new CNN/Tea Party Express poll out Monday showed Perry with the same lead over former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney as he had two weeks ago, 30 percent to 18 percent.

    More importantly, perhaps, Perry smoked Romney on the question of electability, with 42 percent of voters saying they think the Texan has a best chance of beating President Obama, compared to Romney’s 26 percent

  64. FS……………..
    When you say Romney is finished I tend to agree. I do NOT see him winning anything. His record in Massachussetts tells me that…..pure, and simple.

  65. FS @ 12:36

    Perry is blowing out the competition, before people discovered a weakness in immigration. This needs to be brought up tonight and a valid response needs to be heard. Against e-verify? Why?

  66. I must agree,

    Although I do not agree with Leo on most, I do believe that he is correct that Sarah Palin will not enter the election race. Not only is it statistically impossible for Mrs. Palin to win, it simply is not in her favor to seek the office of Presidency.

    Having said that, that doesn’t mean she will not enter the race. Rather if she does, its intentions would be to raise factors competitors should be discussing during debates, knowing she herself is not the benefactor in the end. Would that be wrong? Certainly not.

    To further briefly explain, all the major components of being elected are against her and she is fully aware of such. As Karl Rove explains the “electability” factor models, one must reach to the alternative groups, such as African Americans, Latinos especially, Labor Unions and the likes. If not, then no chance in hell of getting elected. Sarah, is rightfully against such “reaching across the Isles” for votes, hence, not electable.

    In short – at this current time – there is no possibility under the current model of the “electability model” while at the same time being a Constitutionalists abiding by oath and office of due binding laws and simultaneously win the election. Unconstitutional legal obligations and promises are made, financial paybacks become a major factor and past paradigms become just that, a part of the past. So they ask you to believe today, not what was they did yesterday.

    Otherwise, Like Sarah, they wouldn’t be electable. Is that the sign of an American “Leader”? Absolutely not. Is that what we desire and need? Again, you know the answer to that…..

  67. If you cannot manage Massachussetts, how the hell are you ever going to manage America?

  68. I am looking for more from RP than the Paul Ryan “pass the buck plan” to younger folks. Looks like the 18 to 50 group will get stuck holding the bag for this Ponzi scheme.

They think it is just another tax they pay, and that it won’t be around when they retire. And they believe that our leaders are not being honest about that fact when Social Security is discussed.

    I don’t have a crystal ball about how this will all turn out for Perry, but it doesn’t surprise me that, going into Monday night’s debate in Florida, the latest poll from CNN this morning shows him continuing to surge ahead in the race for the Republican nomination, even in the aftermath of his Social Security remarks and the subsequent criticism of them. And I am not advocating on behalf of Perry or suggesting that Social Security be eliminated. I am just pointing out that the assumption his remarks will hurt him may be inaccurate. Many of the same folks who are making the predictions were also saying in 2010 that he would not survive his remarks on Texas secession.

    If I were advising his debate opponents, I would say, “Be very careful if and how you attack Perry on Social Security.” Though he did it a bit awkwardly, Perry has underlined a huge concern that strikes many Republicans as authentic and true. Those are two values in great demand in this election cycle. It could be like the old story of Br’er Rabbit. Perry says, “Oh please, please, don’t throw me in the briar patch.” And in the end, he comes out ahead, while the Washington pundits and campaign operatives come away shaking their heads asking, “How did that happen?”

  70. …not what it is was they did yesterday.

  71. If I had to guess, Perry is probably against e-verify because it is additional regulation on small businesses. I could be wrong. Just my take.

  72. On the other side of the management coin we see Illinois. If Soetoro could not do anything to help manage Illinois…….look around you NOW. He was INNEFFECTIVE at BEST in Illinois, and even WORSE as the POTUS. NOW THE US LOOKS LIKE A CHICAGO SLUM AND IS FINANCIALLY COMPARABLE! A hell of a lot of people doing…..NOTHING!

    “As you can see below, E-Verify clearly proves there is no match for the Connecticut social security number that he has been fraudulently using for years. …

    Further evidence of Barack Obama using a Connecticut Social Security number that was not issued to him was found on the Obama’s 2009 IRS Tax Return. Whoever placed their documents online at the official — whitehousedotgov website with redacted social security numbers did not follow the proper protocols so the redacted information was easily recovered by professionals. They later noticed their error and fixed it, but not before people had downloaded the original pdf documents and recovered the redacted information.

    An affidavit by Mr. Felicito Papa, a professional web developer, attests to opening the White house’s pdf files with Adobe Illustrator. He was able to uncover and reveal the redacted social security numbers on IRS documents. In his affidavit, he states that the SSN number that Barack Obama is using is 042-68-4425. That is the same number that appears on the fraudulent Selective Service Record, and doesn’t match his name in E-Verify. Now he has used it on an IRS document.”

    I would have to agree with your take here on this subject matter Tina. This is for various factual reasons and proven past History of such notions pertaining to Perry. This of course would be highly detrimental to the United States and Taxpayers, but as Rove correctly stated, Perry “MUST APPEAL” to the Latino group if he wishes to become the next President.

    Question is: How does a Politician correctly appeal to the Latino group that want’s nothing more than free federal and State benefits at the cost of American working taxpayers, Amnesty for family and other Mexican illegal immigrants, taxpayers paying for Primary and Secondary education for illegal immigrants as well as Taxpayers paying for Federal grants to – and reimbursements to States – for acceptance of illegals at the universities?

    I ask myself exactly that strategic question. How can Perry appeal to such group, whilst claiming Federal restriction beyond his potential Executive authority? Certainly one must look back on his history in Texas to resolve that question as well as review his newly proclaimed reclassification of laws and powers. Either way, it makes him a liar and will not bode well in the near future debates. Don’t think for a moment the media will refuse to rope-and-cage him on this subject. They will, when the time is right.

  85. I would like to take a moment to add to my last comment regarding the COST OF OPERATION. Organised labor is also a very large part of the reason why America is having a problem competing with the rest of the world. Every square inch of material used in the production of an item reflects a high labor cost just to get it to the material stage. So when our presses, our shears,our welders,and our fabricators compound the high material cost with their equally high LABOR costs there is little room left for another important aspect of business………PROFIT. That is a very large part of the SUCKING SOUND that we hear swirling around American business. In truth the SUCKING SOUND is generated by the movement of American business to Taiwan, Mexico,and other countries who are more than willing to do the same job as their American counterpart for 1/3 the wages. Like it or not that is the BOTTOM LINE.

  86. Rush: New York Times admits that bo is NOT Qualified and Romney and Perry are Qualified to be President.

  87. Just to add Tina,

    E-Verify is not a restrictive burdensome “Regulation” on Businesses, its not. It”s simple, its not time consuming, it’s not a cost increase on Businesses – small or large.

    It is no more than a requirement of a company verifying my College Degree, Birth Certificate, Social Security number and Valid Drivers license.

    If fact, E-Verify can pursue much further integration for data integrity verification than this infant stage it currently resides. Not difficult.

  88. From the ‘net:

    Perry on E-Verify: While many businesses in Texas do use E-Verify, all of Texas uses the I-9 employment eligibility program which E-Verify depends upon to verify workers. E-Verify is not as reliable as the I-9 and E-Verify costs about $150 per verification, a problem for some small Texas businesses.

I am already required to check paperwork and passports which I do so I feel it’s covered normally. e-verify is just regulations on top of that.

    Ron Paul is worried that a fence will keep Americans in so Ron Paul does not have the answers on this one. We have to stop people from coming in, and need better defenses at the border. I happen to think Rick Perry and Ron Paul are both wrong about the fence.

  97. Cabby @ 12:05

    Thanks for providing that Byron York article. I was unaware of some of those positions. It appears now that FS is calling Byron York a DemRat….crazy.

    That being said, Romney’s position of turning off the magnet (e verify, opposition to the Dream Act etc) could be another wedge issue.

  98. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424053111903532804576566503132048630.html

    As the candidates gathered Monday night in Florida for another debate, this one staged by tea-party activists, there was little doubt Gov. Perry has established himself as the front-runner. A pre-debate poll by CNN, which co-sponsored the debate, showed him leading former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney 32%-21%, just the latest in a series of similar findings.

    Yet the question that nags Republicans about Mr. Perry is a simple one: Is he too ideological, too conservative or too extreme to win a general election?

    As it happens, that is the same question that dogged Ronald Reagan in 1980, right up until he won a smashing general-election victory over President Jimmy Carter. So maybe the real question is whether Rick Perry could be another Ronald Reagan.

    Some similarities are striking. Then, as now, Republicans were facing a race against an incumbent wrestling with severe economic problems (inflation then, joblessness now). Then, as now, a safer and more moderate establishment choice was an early favorite. Then, it was George H.W. Bush; now, Mr. Romney plays that role.

    Now some conservatives see a similar mindset at work. “The GOP establishment’s hand-wringing over conservatives who, in their minds, cannot beat Barack Obama is beyond tired rhetoric that needs to be rested once and for all,” argues Keith Appell, a conservative GOP activist. He has emailed around a 1980 Time magazine article titled “But Can Reagan Be Elected?”

    You made a good point in this part of your comment. I agree with that part of it.

  102. As a business person, the other thing we need to do is to train more technical people and nurses in the US. We go outside the US to bring in nurses, while US students are turned away from nursing schools because we don’t have enough nursing teachers at our colleges. We have a shortage of IT workers because high schools do not stress engineering and IT careers. Too many kids think they can get rich playing basketball, etc. That’s not true. In India and China kids are studying for 10 hours a day. They are not in sports. That’s why we see most of our technical professionals coming from India and China now. We need trained US workers. No one is talking about this.

  103. People who are opposed to e-verify do not want to stop illegal immigrants from working. It is a huge issue in Colorado and i’ve listened to all of the various positions on the subject.

    Perry’s opposition to e-verify, signing the Texas Dream Act and supporting the guest worker program is turning on the magnet that Romney referred to.

    Does Perry advocate these positions for the entire country if President?

    WHAT IS WRONG WITH ASKING THESE QUESTIONS?

  104. Our school and college system is outdated. We need to stress in high school more courses for today’s jobs like in health care. We have vocational courses like auto mechanics. We need to stress more health care courses to prepare people as x-ray techs, and many more autocad for people like technical drawing and drafters, etc. Train people for where the jobs are.

  105. http://www.governor.state.tx.us/priorities/education/

    Education reform has been a top priority for Governor Perry during his 20 years of public service. He has worked to raise the overall quality of education in Texas by aligning the higher education standards more closely with the needs of business, balancing accountability with incentives for teacher and school performance and increasing the emphasis on core subject areas like math, reading and science.

  106. If illegals are being hired, it’s because the employers are hiring them. The employers are required to check documents already. If they hire illegals anyway, e-verify will still not stop that problem, IMHO. We have to raid businesses and punish employers who break the law by hiring illegals. Also, illegals are hired because employers are hiring them below minimum wage. Perhaps we need to reduce minimum wage laws so more US people are hired. This is a huge issue for young people who are losing out on simple jobs that illegals are taking. For example, the beach employers always bring in kids from Russia because they pay them less when our college students need jobs.

  107. As with his stellar performance creating Jobs in Texas, Gov Perry has also excelled in improving the Educational System in Texas.

    http://www.governor.state.tx.us/priorities/education/

  108. Ask the questions, Paxson. But to say we are for illegals, is just being a bully. You accuse others. Let’s have a civil discussion, and realize where we are coming from. You spent two days telling me how libertarians hate big government and then turn around and propose a typical big government solution.

  109. http://blog.chron.com/texassparkle/2011/09/gov-perry-and-higher-education/

    Perry’s first poke at this sclerotic establishment came early in his first term. He suggested converting the money that the state gives to public colleges and universities into individual grants handed straight to students. Money is power, and Perry’s idea was to place the power in the hands of “consumers,” as he put it, rather than the administrators, to increase competition among schools and thereby lower costs and increase quality. “Young fertile minds [should be] empowered,” he said at the time, “to pursue their dreams regardless of family income, the color of their skin, or the sound of their last name.”

    Read the whole thing. The status quo of academia has fought Perry every step of the way.

    One of the things I like about Perry is his willingness to try innovative things. This country really is not a “one size fits all” kind of place. Each state has it’s own set of problems and should be able to deal with it in it’s own way. We seemed to have lost that with the ever increasing federal government encroaching on state’s rights.

  110. http://www.tnr.com/article/politics/94172/rick-perry-higher-ed-reform

    Rick Perry Is a Higher-Education Visionary.

    He’s got some smart ideas about higher education. The fact that most liberals think otherwise reveals a glaring weakness in the progressive education agenda.

  111. Bully? CABBY references a Byron York piece and is labelled a DemRat and that the issue doesn’t matter.

    It appears that Perry has the trifecta of positions that are soft in illegal immigration. Dream Act, guest worker TIN’s and opposition to e-verify.

    Illegal immigration is not his strong suit. Lets put it that way.

  112. Since you are well verse in free market principles and libertarianism, Paxson, you will be well aware that Adam Smith, one of the greatest economist who ever lived, wrote that businesses will hire at the lowest rate they can find someone to work at. As Old Salt said, unions are wrecking America because they are too expensive. Employers hire illegals because they can hire them at lower rates. People get unemployment help and then they won’t take lower paying jobs. Folks say they won’t work at MacDonald’s and then take welfare. Americans have to realize they either have to study in areas where there are jobs, like in health care, or they will have to take lower paying jobs. Otherwise, they will lose their job to an illegal.

  114. I had never heard of Sandy before, what a wonderful story!!

    BTW, I don’t know about the rest of you, but the repeated, long posts about Perry are making me LESS likely to vote for him….. Anyone who inspires such obsessive behavior isn’t someone I would want to vote for.

  115. Tina @ 2:00

    They won’t lose their jobs to an illegal if the methods of identifying those illegals is more firm with programs such as e-verify. Not to mention the fact that this class if illegal worker suppresses the wages of legal workers.

  116. I agree with Cabby on many things and did not call her a DemRat, and I like Bryon York. You keep confusing me with Leo. I am my own person. And the problem with American jobs and illegals is very complicated. Not one thing will solve it. I know for sure Ron Paul seems out on left field regarding immigration. As a libertarian, he doesn’t want to limit anyone’s freedom of movent and won’t build a fence because it will keep Americans in. So if you don’t like Perry’s position, Ron Paul is not the answer. Actually, Romney seemed pretty strong on this issue in the last debate to be honest.

  117. Rush: The Also-Rans “are going to attack from the left Perry on Social Security and that is a mistake.” Romney has called SS a “Ponzi Scheme.”

  118. With all due respect to the lawyers, let’s remember, all the legal minds in Congress always want more laws to solve our problems. We want less laws, less taxes and more business solutions to do what is right. Because business people will always get around something. If wages are too high in the US, they will ship the jobs overseas to find cheaper labor, or they will hire more illegals in the US. That’s the issue.

  119. Tina @ 2:08

    Again Tina, I do not support Ron Paul in these primaries. I like Herman Cain. I suppose you are right, you aren’t FS, but the DemRat label being thrown around against anybody who has any legitimate questions (including Byron York, no DemRat) is just getting old.

  120. The status quo of academia has fought…

    _______________________________________
    Academia is a huge problem with their system of tenure. They are often financed by Saudi Arabia or overseas investors. They are not pro-American and are often too liberal. Their pensions drive up the cost of a college education and they are too busy teaching people stupid stuff like art history which does not train folks for a job.

  121. I like Cain too Paxson.

  122. Perry seems to support the trifecta of positions that create the “magnet” to illegal immigrants. Dream Act, Guest worker programs and opposition to e-verify.

    What would his positions be as President? It’s a fair question. There are medical clinics here in Colorado that cater almost solely to illegal immigrants who are working here illegally. The costs are astronomical and needs to be addressed.

  123. I mention Ron Paul, not because I think you support him, Paxson, but because I feel he’s too extreme. You’ve made clear you do not support him.

  124. I have not made up my mind on a candidate yet. I like Perry very much, but also like Bachmann and Cain. There are still things about Romney I like too. Yes, he did Romneycare, but as a business person, I like Cain’s and Romney’s business experience and feel that is vital with our economy down in the dumps. Perry shakes things up. I’m worried Romney is not a can do person. Perry has brought the need to shake up Social Security in this debate that Romney was ignoring too much. But I still do not dismiss Romney or Cain and would support both if they get the nomination.

  125. Rush: Just went through a litany of politicians including Romney who have referred to Social Security as a Ponzi Scheme.

  126. Romney is definitely a “can do” person and he is very intelligent. He took over the Winter Olympics in Utah when it was deeply in trouble and ade it a success. Where I fall away from Romney is that he always does the politically expedient thing. For instance, during those Utah Olympics he snubbed the Boy Scouts of America foe their position on gay troop leaders. Crazy.

    Romney definitely has the capacity to come up with a plan to fix social security. As does Herman Cain. We’ll have to see how Perry works himself through this social security issue.

  127. Social Security is a Ponzi Scheme. One of the main issues I do happen to agree with Perry.

  128. http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/print/276859

    In any case, it’s certain that Perry’s Ponzi-scheme claim is in no way original. Not only have a raft of conservatives called Social Security a Ponzi scheme over the years, quite a few very respectable liberals have done so as well. It is clearly wrong either to treat the Ponzi-scheme analogy as unprecedented or to rule it altogether out of legitimate public debate. A historical tour of the use of the Ponzi-scheme metaphor will make the point.

  129. Michelle Bachman is done in my mind. She looked very weak on the stage next to Romney, Perry, Gingrich and the rest. She didn’t answer questions. It was disappointing to me as I really wanted her to do well.

  130. I agree with that Paxson, but then Cain said Palestinians should have a right of return which is a major mistake. He’s very weak on foreign policy; much weaker than Bachmann. But if you are willing to accept Cain being weak on foreign policy and still support him, you should be willing to accept the weaknesses of other candidates assuming they learn and grow stronger.

  131. Newt is actually one of the strongest in foreign policy and Santorum of the GOP candidates. Bachmann is very strong as well. Perry and Romney are quite good too. Huntsman is very sharp, but I disagree with his policy of isolationism as I do with Ron Paul, as stated previously. But this election will not be about foreign policy. It will be about the economy and jobs.

  132. If I were running for President, against an illegal alien who did not qualify Constitutionally to hold office, I would out the phony, and get him declared ineligible, and thrown off the ballot.

    Obama, I am talking about you!

  133. An example of Social Security deciet, and those that are “Reformed” Democrats, but now believe today.

    Remember when President Bush’s call to allow Americans to take a portion of the money they pay as Social Security taxes to set up private retirement accounts. Why the suggestion? The more of what a person earns that’s in his pocket and under his control, the better off he will be. For now, let’s look at some of the gross political deceit, lies and unkept promises that have become a part of Social Security.

    Here’s what a 1936 government Social Security pamphlet said: “After the first 3 years — that is to say, beginning in 1940 — you will pay, and your employer will pay, 1.5 cents for each dollar you earn, up to $3,000 a year. … Beginning in 1943, you will pay 2 cents, and so will your employer, for every dollar you earn for the next 3 years. … And finally, beginning in 1949, twelve years from now, you and your employer will each pay 3 cents on each dollar you earn, up to $3,000 a year. … That is the most you will ever pay.”

    Had Congress lived up to those promises, where $ 3,000 was the maximum earnings subject to Social Security tax, controlling for inflation today’s $50,000-a-year wage earner would pay about $700 in Social Security taxes, as opposed to the more than $3,000 that he pays today.

    The next big lie is from the same Social Security pamphlet: “Beginning November 24, 1936, the United States government will set up a Social Security account for you. … The checks will come to you as a right.” First, there’s no Social Security account containing your money, but more importantly, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled on two occasions that Americans have no legal right to Social Security payments.

    In Helvering v. Davis (1937), the court held that Social Security was not an insurance program, saying, “The proceeds of both (employee and employer) taxes are to be paid into the Treasury like internal-revenue taxes generally, and are not earmarked in any way.”

    In a later decision, Flemming v. Nestor (1960), the court said, “To engraft upon Social Security system a concept of ‘accrued property rights’ would deprive it of the flexibility and boldness in adjustment to ever-changing conditions which it demands …” That flexibility and boldness mean Congress can constitutionally cut benefits, raise retirement age, raise Social Security taxes and do anything it wishes, including eliminating payments.

    If a private retirement company reneged on its promises, we could take it to court. If Congress reneges on its promises, there’s no judicial course of action whatsoever.

    Vital to any Ponzi scheme, like Social Security, is the ability to recruit as many suckers as possible. In 1999, a little noticed part of President Clinton’s plan to “save” Social Security was to force 5 million previously exempted employees into Social Security. If they were forced into Social Security, it would have created billions in additional revenue. Guess what. Twelve senators, including five Democrats — Dianne Feinstein (D. Calif.), Barbara Boxer (D. Calif.), Christopher Dodd (D.-Conn.), Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) and Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) — descended on the White House to demand that President Clinton not support forcing 5 million of their constituents into Social Security. They warned of the adverse impact on employees in terms of lower rates of return and lost flexibility.

    Isn’t that great? These are the same politicians who resisted President Bush’s call to allow Americans to take a part of their Social Security taxes to put into private retirement accounts. If they’d go to bat for those 5 million workers to remain out of Social Security, to avoid the adverse impact of lower rates of return and lost flexibility, why would they fight to deny tens of millions of workers a right to use a portion of their taxes to do the same?

  134. Neither Romney or Cain have plans to save Social Security. Romney has no plan. Cain’s plan is to copy the Chile Plan which is an abject failure.

  135. Cain may be weaker on foreign policy, but he has all of the right views that I support. I am under no illusion that he will win, but these voices in the primary only make the eventual winner stronger. That’s why I’d like to see Palin in there too. She is sounding better and better to me over time. Even if she may not be able to win, her voice on crony capitalism etc would only enhance the field.

    She took on the Republican establishment in Alaska, and won. I was raised in Alaska and know first hand how entrenched that those individuals that she took on were. There is no love lost between RINO Mirkowski and Palin.

  136. Rush: Romney called Social Security a “Criminal Ponzi Scheme in his latest book!

  137. Paxson | September 12, 2011 at 2:34 pm |

    ———-

    Good points. I should have mentioned the Olympics myself.

  138. I agree with Cain’s views too, Paxson, which is why I can support him over someone like Ron Paul. Had Cain been stronger on foreign policy, he would have been my candidate, but I have not dismissed him, and would even like to see him as a Veep choice, possibly if he grows in his foreign policy positions. The other slight worry about Cain that I have is that he had colon cancer, but that is not a deal breaker for me.

  139. We also need to consider electibility. I still think Romney and Perry are strongest on this. As a woman, I hope they would consider a woman or a minority as a Veep choice, but I want the strongest ticket to beat Obama as my first requirement.

  140. Tina,

    I enjoy reviewing your posts. At this time with all due honestly, I am highly suspect of your writings and political paradigms. Although I review them with “Red Flags”, I am most certainly willing to hear what you have to say.

    Nevertheless, just me being me. I am by nature and education an analyst.

  141. It will be amusing to watch romney try to weasel, squirm and flip-flop his way out of this trap that he has unwittingly laid for himself.

    LOL!

    “[T]he American people have been effectively defrauded out of their Social Security,” Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, wrote in his 2010 book “No Apology.” “In 1982, the government raised Social Security taxes with the intention of creating a surplus that could be set aside in some fashion for the baby boomers when they retired. But for the last thirty years, the surplus has been spent, not on retirement security, but on regular budget items.”

    “…What would happen to the bankers responsible for misusing the money? They would go to jail. But what has happened to the people responsible for the looming bankruptcy of Social Security? They keep returning to Congress every two years.”

    Matt David, Hunstman’s campaign manager, said in a press release on Thursday. “Governor Romney’s shameless pandering last night on social security is just another example of the problems with his ‘say anything’ approach to political campaigns.”

    Romney’s campaign declined a request for comment.

  142. See Tina …we actually are a lot closer to each others views than you think … I want to know everything about all if the candidates so we know what we are getting and what we need to change about the eventual winner. It will likely be Perry and it isn’t my intention to make him unelectable, we need to hold his feet to the fire to make his views our views.

    Mitt Romney’s demagoguing of Rick Perry for calling Social Security a Ponzi scheme is just mind-boggling.

    Let’s put aside for a moment Stanley’s invaluable column on the home-page today, demonstrating that, for nearly half a century, reputable commentators across the ideological spectrum have referred to Social Security as a Ponzi scheme due to the undeniable fact that its structure is — and has always been — unsustainable. The fact is that, just last year, Romney himself compared social security to a fraudulent criminal enterprise.

  146. Sorry. I meant to say if he is pro Dream Act etc. we need to know that now.

  147. We need to support, at minimum, a do nothing government, because every
    time they pass and sign a new law, you bet it will cost us money and enrich
    those involved.
    This next election we must ask all elected to at least attempt to roll-back the
    progressive swampland that has been created. We won’t get anywhere near
    all that we want in one or two election cycles, but we must insist on some of it now while lining up the candidates to carry out the next phase.

    Until five minutes ago, Romney used this system would be deemed criminal if someone in the private sector tried to pull it off. Now, he calls Perry “reckless” for saying it is criminal. I hope someone asks him what changed his mind.

    ….. As a woman, I hope they would consider a woman or a minority as a Veep choice, but I want the strongest ticket to beat Obama as my first requirement.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    May I ask “Why” you prefer a Woman or a Minority as such choice? Rather than qualifications regardless of sex, height, minority or otherwise, why do you “Prefer” such a notion to begin with? This is an illogical trait in liberalism based on sexism and affirmative action, and completely ignores qualifications. The root of these current problems ongoing.

  150. CW,

    Thanks for the fine piece on Sandy Bradshaw.
    I have sent out many emails of our URL with
    brief description of the the heart-tugging moments.
    Most should read, so hoping some will join us here.

    Vic

  151. Well William I could turn that around on you and ask why is a man always the best choice? The tallest person often wins elections. Why can’t short people be considered? More women have been graduating college in recent years than men. They’ve run many top corporations recently as well. More women are starting to be govenors too. Given that we have never had a woman as President, it would be very nice. I concluded with saying that we should pick the best ticket. The best candidate might be a woman. Who knows?

  152. Forgot to mention, that more women, than men, since we live longer on average, are part of the voting electorate, so it would be more democratic to have a woman as president, but right now, we need the best candidate, male or female.

  153. It is HILARIOUS to watch the boHillary demRats’ franticly skip from issue to issue as all their smear attempts against Gov Perry fail!

    LOL!

  154. Jobs proposed to be funded primarily by eliminating deductions for those with incomes above 200K. Looks like small businesses would fund the plan and further depress hiring. Hope it is DOA at House.

  155. By the way, William, I am very against affirmative action. Again, since I run a business, I see the useless time and energy it takes to put together an affirmative action plan. It was suppose to be a short term thing to help women and minorities get ahead. It’s become permanent and needs to be abolished completely. They are useless exercises. People hire who they want anyway, as I have said, and find ways to get around rules that clueless politicians give us. However, since there are more women than men in America, the minority class of men, have been ruling the majority of women for hundreds of years, which should go against your beliefs of democracy and freedom. I am all for the “most” qualified candidate winning which is not Obama.

  156. Unfortunately the only woman in the Republican Primary is Bachmann and she had made herself an UNELECTABLE JOKE and ruined any hope that she might have had of being Rick Perry’s VP choice.

  158. FS, It is offensive to say women are an unelectable joke. She is not a joke. She is very bright and has the strongest background of tax policy of any of the candidates.

  159. FS. Given the fact that you are the only true voice here, what is your position on the Dream Act? Do these Dream Act laws intensify the magnet that draws more illegal immigration? Will Rick Perry support a federal Dream Act?

    I have been very impressed with Gov Palin in her interviews and speeches lately. In 2008, Palin was very strong on energy issues. Now she is well versed on all the issues from Foreign Policy to Economic Issues. She is obviously a very intelligent capable person.

    I would not be surprised to see Sarah Palin elected the First Woman President by a landslide in 2016.

  165. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2009/02/palin-perry-201.html

    “He walks the walk of a true conservative,” Palin writes. “And he sticks by his guns — and you know how I feel about guns.”

    “Not every child is born into ideal circumstances,” Palin adds, “but every life is sacred. Rick Perry knows this — it is at the core of his being.”

  166. A temporary guest worker program for technical, highly trained computer professionals and nurses, is a good idea since our colleges don’t train enough IT and software people. Are you people on this blog in business because companies in this country are screaming for technical folks even though millions are out of work. Those millions don’t have the skills needed for todays work force which is another reason why the top technical companies are going to China, India and Israel. Israelis, Asians and Indians stress education. US parents no longer do. US parents stress sports and TV watching if you judge by what people do.

    Romney is also for a guest worker program. But again, if we reform our education system and get more people into IT and nursing, we will eventually be able to have more US employees in these jobs. The problem is that our colleges and high schools are educating folks in the wrong fields, and our parents have been given the wrong idea that if Mary or Johnnie just get good enough in soccer or sports, they will get a college scholarship. That is just not true for the majority of Americans, as only 5% of kids get sports scholarships to college, but the majority of kids are in sports and are not studying the amount of time they need to make it in technical and nursing fields. But we need a fence to guard the border too.

    Free Speech says, “However, a Perry/Palin Ticket would be strong!”

    I tend to agree with that at this point, considering that the strong ones likely to emerge before the primaries will be Perry and Romney. I have problems with Romney’s history of flip-flops over the years and somehow don’t have the desired trust in him. If Perry were to win the nomination, he just might choose Palin for his running mate, but we can’t be certain.

    Don’t forget the tea party debate conducted by CNN at 8 PM Eastern! Maybe this will shed further light.

    Maybe It’s Time for a C-Student for President

    http://godfatherpolitics.com/905/maybe-its-time-for-a-c-student-for-president/

  180. Here is a teaser for my prior post:
    “Perry got a D in economics. Good for him. It was most likely Keynesian Economics, one of the most boring and convoluted courses ever devised by academia.”

    “Given what academics from Harvard, Yale, and other Ivy Leaguers have done to our nation, I think a C student should have a shot at the presidency. All he has to do is follow directions. It’s all written out in the Constitution.” And so on…..

  181. Like Rick Perry, Steve Jobs, Ted Turner and Bill Gates did not do well in college. In fact they did worse, they were all college dropouts, but enormously successful in the real world.

    carter is the United States Military Academy grad and bo was allowed to graduate from harvard despite the fact that he could not write a coherent 3 page paragraph without many gramatical errors.

  182. II believe that national security is the most important problem our country is facing today. One of the major threats is radical Islamism, and its goal to kill us and to destroy our nation. If you think our country is in economic trouble now, you’ll see even greater chaos if we experience another terrorist attack like 9/11. A president with business experience will not be enough to save us.

    Is any one else here seriously concerned about the overthrow of so many Middle East countries in the past year? Egypt, Libya Syria, etc? Has Obama’s tenure emboldened the rebels? Will all of the new governments be ruled by Sharia Law and the tenets of Islam? I do not believe that all Muslims are evil. Absolutely not! But it is difficult to determine who supports us and who wants us dead.

    We need an individual who is willing to identify the evil confronting us and who has the intestinal fortitude to meet them head-on; someone who has come face to face with the enemy and does not fear them. In my opinion, that person is Allen West. I am still hoping that Sarah Palin will decide not to run but instead give her support to Allen West.

    Getting off my soap box, again.

  183. My dream team is Palin and West in any order. The dimmies would turn themselves inside out if that came about. It would be beautiful to behold.

  184. We are making some progress here today folks with respect to coherent debate. Somebody will bring FS around kicking and screaming someday.

  185. Jonah, when you are on your “soap box” you have good things to say!
    I agree with you about the serious national security threats we face. I doubt if many of us fully realize what peril affronts us. As long as things go along fairly smoothly, it is hard to keep up our alert. Someone like Allen West would make a good VP selection, since I doubt that he will get into the race.
    I personally would like to hear more from Perry on national defense.

  186. http://www.newsmax.com/Newsfront/fund-sarah-palin-/2011/09/02/id/409556

    “Given the elaborate editing that went into this production, is it likely that Palin would have approved a visual nod to Perry as a mere coincidence?” asks blogger Robert Stacy McCain, a keen-eyed Palin watcher. “I don’t think so.”

    My dream team is Palin and West in any order. The dimmies would turn themselves inside out if that came about. It would be beautiful to behold.

    That would be a great ticket for 2016, but it is not going to happen in 2012. A Perry/Palin Ticket is quite likely however.

  192. Jindal to endorse Perry

    Tampa, Florida (CNN) – Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is backing Rick Perry for president, a major endorsement for the Texas governor as the campaign for the Republican nomination enters the crucial fall stretch of the primary calendar, a source tells CNN.

    Jindal is on his way to Florida and will be Perry’s guest at Monday night’s “Tea Party Republican Debate” broadcast on CNN from Tampa, the source said. Jindal is expected to formally make the announcement prior to the debate.

    On Monday, Sept. 12th, CNN will broadcast the “Tea Party Republican Debate,” live from Tampa, Florida at 8 p.m. ET. Follow all the issues and campaign news leading up to the debate on CNNPolitics.com and @cnnpolitics on Twitter.

    Cabby,
    That means a lot, coming from you, especially. YOU are our Matriarch here, at citizenwells. That demands some respect, IMO. Wisdom comes with age. BTW Who is the oldest man here?

  194. http://hotair.com/archives/2011/09/12/trump-card-bobby-jindal-endorses-perry/

    Neither endorsement breaks either guy out of their niche. Romney’s running as the safe, northern, Wonder Bread establishment candidate and Perry’s running as the bold, southern, grassroots favorite with executive experience. Pawlenty and Jindal are natural matches for their respective endorsees. Jindal’s endorsement matters more, though, because Perry’s immediate problem is proving that he’s electable. The more big-name conservatives bypass the “safe” choice in the field to roll the dice on him, the more credible Perry looks. (And in fact, he already has an event lined up this week with another prominent southern governor.) When Romney inevitably hits him again tonight on Social Security, Perry can point at Jindal in the audience and say that the governor of Louisiana — and esteemed policy wonk — would never throw his endorsement away on an unelectable candidate. Which is true enough: For Jindal to commit this early in the race, he must be awfullly confident in Perry’s chances. If he’s right, there’s bound to be a cabinet position in it for him.

  195. http://www.theatlanticwire.com/politics/2011/09/bobby-jindal-endorses-rick-perry/42370/

    Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is endorsing his state’s neighbor, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, CNN’s Mark Preston reports. Jindal will be Perry’s guest at the Republican debate in Tampa Monday night.

    The two southern governors have publicly praised each other in the past. In his 2010 book, Fed Up, Perry called Jindal “one of the brightest, most capable governors in the country” and someone who’ll “come up with a health care delivery system that we will like, and we will go over and appropriate it from him and put it in place in Texas.”

  199. http://www.cnn.com/2011/09/12/opinion/erickson-poll-romney-trust/

    CNN) — There is a lot of buzz about CNN’s new poll that shows Rick Perry seemingly solidifying his lead among Republican in the primary contest. Forty-two percent of Republicans think Rick Perry has the best shot at beating Barack Obama. Forty-five percent of seniors support Perry compared to 21% for Mitt Romney.

    There is one question that is not getting as much attention, though in my mind it explains every other question. CNN asked, “Which Republican candidate is most likely to fight for their beliefs?” The winner? Rick Perry with 29%, followed by Sarah Palin at 23%. Mitt Romney? Michele Bachmann? They tied at 11%.

    The answer to the question really says very little about Rick Perry and a great deal about Mitt Romney. It plays into the “opportunist” critique that many primary voters have of Romney.

    In his book, Mitt Romney compared those responsible for the “looming bankruptcy” of Social Security to people engaged in a criminal enterprise, but this year he attacks Rick Perry for calling it a Ponzi scheme.

    Pro-life voters are still skeptical of Romney’s conversion. Fiscal conservatives are skeptical of any governor of Massachusetts. Tea party activists joke that the only issue Romney has not flipped on is the one he should — “Romneycare.”

    As Romney amps up his attacks on Rick Perry and the race increasingly becomes a two-man race, Romney’s path to victory is across a very tight rope with his accumulated history of positions piled high on his shoulders.

  200. Confirmation is good. LOL

  201. demRats are incapable of logical thought. That is why they are so surprised by Gov Perry’s success and can not present a logical argument against him.

  202. http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0911/63292.html

    The failed presidential candidate’s decision to sign on as a national co-chair for Romney’s campaign surprised many former staffers and fundraisers. And to a livid Roger Underwood, Pawlenty’s Iowa campaign co-chair, the former Minnesota governor’s decision to pin his endorsement to an attack on Rick Perry’s position on Social Security was “really disappointing.”

    Rick Perry brought up some interesting points about Social Security and I was saddened that Romney quickly treated those concerns as if they were not really concerns,” he said, who hasn’t yet picked another candidate to support. “So it surprises me that Governor Pawlenty would jump on someone who so quickly disses those concerns, when the reality is Rick Perry is speaking truth. We have an absolute train wreck at our feet.”

    Pawlenty’s senior Florida team was poised to back Pawlenty’s pick. But in the hours after the announcement, which arrived on the morning of Florida’s first GOP primary debate, none came forward. (Ann Woods Herberger, Pawlenty’s former senior finance director, has joined Jon Huntsman.)

    Florida state Rep. Carlos Trujillo, one of the many freshman lawmakers who endorsed Pawlenty, said the announcement had little sway over his own deliberations.

    “No, absolutely not,” said Trujillo, who remained undecided as he prepared to attend Monday’s debate. “It’s funny — when people get out of races, their endorsements become more political allegiances for benefits than the support of philosophical principles.”

    While Rich Killion, who was Pawlenty’s senior adviser in New Hampshire, said, “Endorsements from people I like and respect are clearly noted, but won’t impact my decision.”

  203. “MS NAPOLITANO, SHOW US THE BORDER”

    By Katie Kieffer
    Sept. 12, 2011

    Excerpt:

    “Out of sight is out of mind. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano can give the impression she’s doing her job and keeping Americans safe when Americans are unaware of the dangers lurking next door.

    […] Nevertheless, Napolitano refuses to publicly acknowledge the extent of border violence from drug cartels. She also refrains from pressuring the media to cover the preventable destruction and bloodshed on the border as much as it covers natural disasters.

    Between 35,000 and 40,000 people were killed in Mexico since President Felipe Calderón launched his war against drugs in 2006, reports the Associated Press.

    I think Americans deserve to know about the drug cartel violence spilling onto our border. It should be printed on the front page of every major newspaper and discussed nightly on prime time television. We’re not talking about violence occurring across the ocean in Libya. We’re talking about brutal gangs operating out of our next-door neighbor, Mexico.

    Let’s say you look outside and catch your next-door neighbor decapitating, scalping and removing the skin from the faces of a family that lives across town. Then, you watch him stuff the skin from the faces and scalps into a woman’s purse and showcase the purse as a bloody “trophy” (this happened last month outside a Sam’s Club store in Acapulco).

    Assuming you can’t move, what would you do? Close your blinds, grab a beer and turn on the football game? Or, would you build a 21-foot-high wall around your house?

    On March 24, Commissioner of the Texas Department of Agriculture Todd Staples wrote a letter to Napolitano asking her to “recognize the threat of Mexican drug cartels as being a clear and present danger to our citizens and to the safe production of the United States food supply.”

    Staples asked Napolitano to visit the site ProtectYourTexasBorder.com where Texas farmers and ranchers explain how drug cartels drive them to “abandon their land, leaving it vulnerable to criminal occupation, while retreating from farming and ranching and jeopardizing the food supply upon which we’ve all come to rely.”

    Perhaps Napolitano was too busy fine-tuning her “If You See Something, Say Something” Walmart infomercials to bother replying. She delegated the Assistant Secretary for the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, Betsy Markey, to respond to Staples on her behalf.

    […]

    “Napolitano’s “boss,” President Obama, seems more concerned with sweet-talking Hispanic voters than acknowledging cartel violence. He told the city of El Paso on May 10 that the 700-mile border fence was “basically complete” when it was really only five percent complete, five years after approval.

    Napolitano’s “partner” in fighting the drug war, Attorney General Eric Holder, struggles to oversee the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The ATF’s “Fast and Furious” program lost track of over 2,000 major weapons crossing the border. Drug cartels likely acquired hundreds of powerful firearms and a significant leg up thanks to Holder’s mismanagement.

    This September, PBS launches a new series featuring Calderón. Time Magazine reports: “In an effort to boost Mexico’s weakened tourism industry … (Calderón) will bravely lead camera crews into caverns, up rivers and down sink-holes, often while wearing an Indiana Jones-style hat.”

    So Napolitano stands by as the American public subsidizes a PBS show enabling Calderón to lure wealthy American tourists into drug cartel country. Does Napolitano work for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security or Mexico’s Secretaría de Turismo?

    Ms. Napolitano and her partners should acknowledge the brutality on the border instead of ignoring or underestimating it. They should show Americans the border by asking their pals in the mainstream media to cover drug cartel border violence 24/7/365 (just like a hurricane) until it ceases.

    If Americans fully understood the drug cartels on the border, they would be more open to decriminalizing drugs. A strategic, states’ rights approach to decriminalization is worth trying, but Americans won’t approach the war on drugs differently if Napolitano keeps telling the public: “some of America’s safest communities are in the Southwest border region.”

    A November 2010 UK medical study published by The Lancet shows that alcohol is more lethal than heroin and crack cocaine and drastically more harmful than marijuana, ecstasy and LSD. Meanwhile, Forbes reports that drug abuse dropped by 50 percent in Portugal just 10 years after decriminalizing all drugs.

    Show us the border, Ms. Napolitano. Acknowledge the national security threat from drug cartels. Modify your approach and protect Americans.”

  204. http://blog.chron.com/rickperry/2011/09/tim-pawlenty-flip-flops-endorses-mitt-romney-over-rick-perry/

    One of the great joys of any primary season is watching the candidates rip each other’s eyes out for months….and then, after they drop out of the race, watching them flip a 180, walk back everything they said about their opponents as they endorse their frenemies. It’s a shameless, albeit unspoken grovel for a job in the new Administration…or maybe just something to keep them out of the house for the next 15 months.

    For whatever reason, former Minn. Gov Tim Pawlenty cartwheeled into an endorsement of Romney Monday, bearing Mittness to him as “unmatched in his skills, and experience, and talent when it comes to turning around this economy and growing jobs.” For his flip, T-Paw is now a national co-chair of Romney’s campaign…but says he doesn’t want to be considered for Vice President.

    That great stampede you just heard was Pawlenty’s 2 percent support lining up behind Mitt.

    Now, you may remember Pawlenty as someone who christened Mitt’s Massachusetts health care plan as “Obamneycare” for its similarities -inspiration, actually – to the much-loathed (in GOP circles) new federal health law.

    “Look, Obamacare was patterned after Mitt’s plan in Massachusetts,” T-Paw said at a GOP debate in August. “And for Mitt or anyone else to say there aren’t substantial similarities or they are not essentially the same plan — it just isn’t credible. So that’s why I called it Obamneycare, and I think that’s a fair label. I’m happy to call it that again tonight.”

    And T-Paw said in that Ames, Iowa debate that Mitt’s spending record and judicial selections as Massachusetts guv were downright Obamanian:

    “Mitt ran up spending on his watch as governor — 44 percent in four years. In the area of judicial selections the Boston Globe said two out of three or so of Mitt’s judge selections were either pro-choice, Democrat or liberal. I appointed conservatives to my supreme court. We have to show contrast not similarities to Barack Obama.”

    And did you remember then-T-Paw spokesman Alex Conant criticizing Romney for not taking a stand on the debt ceiling debate, saying “Apparently, Gov. Romney is still checking his gut to figure out where he should stand.”

  205. http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0911/63292.html

    “We are grateful to the Washington Post, The New York Times, Time Magazine and other great publications whose directors have attended our meetings and respected their promises of discretion for almost 40 years. It would have been impossible for us to develop our plan for the world if we had been subjected to the lights of publicity during those years. But the world is more sophisticated and prepared to march towards a world government. The supranational sovereignty of an intellectual elite and world bankers is surely preferable to the national auto-determination practiced in past centuries.”

    Texas is on FIRE and Obama sits on his BUTT!
    So far nothing much is being reported by News media..

    http://moonbattery.com/?p=2011
    ————————————————————
    Here’s what the federal government is doing about the historic wildfires
    that have been devastating Texas — grounding firefighting aircraft:

    Nearly half of the federal government’s firefighting air tankers are
    sitting idle at a California airport, grounded by the Obama
    administration in a contract dispute just weeks before wildfires swept
    through Texas killing a mother and her child, and destroying 100,000
    acres. …

    The U.S. Forest Service terminated the contract with Aero Union five
    weeks ago to operate seven P-3 Orions that are critical to the agency’s
    firefighting mission, leaving the federal government with 11 tankers
    under contract to help battle more than 50 large uncontained wildfires
    now burning nationwide.

    That’s down from 40 tankers used by the Forest Service just a decade
    ago, according to Rep. Dan Lungren (R.-Calif.), chairman of the House
    Committee on Administration, who is challenging the decision to dismiss
    the largest provider of heavy air-tanker support to the federal
    government.

    Again we see that the only areas in which our explosively expanding
    federal government shrinks are those few that pertain to its legitimate
    responsibilities.

    Due to Obamunist “transparency,” the government isn’t saying why it
    abruptly canceled the contract right before the start of the fire
    season. We do know that Aero Union passed its annual inspection.

    Eventually the grounded aircraft will be replaced by inferior planes
    that — like Comrade Obama’s Darth Vader buses — come from Canada. These require more downtime and carry a smaller load of fire retardant.

    It’s tempting to blame this latest debacle on Obama’s war on red states
    (see here and here and here and here and here), but California will be
    hit too as the fire season heats up.

    Fortunately we don’t need to know the shadowy motives of the Obama
    Regime. We only need to know that it is urgent we get these people out
    of power as soon as possible.

    Obama get the dam planes in the air

    Yes, Hap. From my days in the once Great State of California, I remember those Santa Ana winds. When bo’s criminal cohorts start setting fires in Southern California like they have done in Texas, California will go up in smoke. It saddens me more than I can express.

  210. I like sarah palin, rick santorum, or marco rubio (until SCOTUS determines who is a NBC, I would suggest he is eligible) for VP…..Newt, for Sec of State. Mark Levin, atty Gen’l,Paul Ryan, sec of treasury and Sheriff Joe Arpaio head of Homeland Security….. These are honorable and able people and could run their departments without the need of useless czars…….I would also Eliminate Dep’t of Ed, Energy and EPA. Go after and remove the redundant departments within departments. Eliminate capital gains and estate taxes…..and reduce corporate tax. Currency from the entire world would flood this economy instantly. Strengthen our Military and INCREASE the Defense Budget wisely while removing the waste and fraud.

  222. How can you compound interest on an I.O.U? I posted an angry statement about Congress raiding our SS Trust fund several months ago. This was never a voluntary obligation, we, as taxpayers, were forced into it. Yet, no one objected, we all paid into it, blindly trusting our government to be honest stewards of our money. It was never designed to be a retirement program, just a supplement. But, when it was created, TPTB knew that most people would die before they could collect. HAHA, we are now living longer and the huge population of Baby Boomers are entering the age of retirement expecting OUR end of the bargain. I say, make those that squandered the money figure out how to make it solvent. Ya think those one term congress people who are retired and living off our dime should give up their benefits? Or their spouses that receive benefits? Or the current people serving……what can they do to rectify the situation. All I hear is that we ALL have to make some shared sacrifices. Shared my azz. We lived up to our end of the bargain. Congress should/must solve this without any sacrifices from those that have paid in.

  225. http://internationalbusiness.wikia.com/wiki/Strengths_and_Weaknesses_of_the_Chilean_Retirement_System

    • High administration costs resulting from the wages of the administrators and the investment in new technologies and marketing tools for the system. The administration costs are projected to reduce a worker’s final pension savings account by at least 15%.
    • There is a lack of choice in portfolios. Each administrator is only allowed to offer each worker 5 different portfolios to choose from, which are all very similar.
    • Workers in Chile have very little or no experience at all in investment. Some employees will want to choose a portfolio with the highest return, but with the highest risk. Therefore, the worker’s lack of experience puts them in danger of losing a great deal of money.
    • The government has promised money to retirees with the minimum pension guarantee. As Chilean workers begin to retire, the government will have to come up with the funds to pay these workers.
    • Those who do not meet the 20 years of contributions required to receive the minimum pension guarantee are left with no help from the government.
    • Although it is said that the system is flexible, there are so many government mandated rules, regulations, guidelines and guarantees that prove the system otherwise.
    • The system singles out women. Since women earn 33% less than men in Chile, spend less time working because of pregnancies and raising children, and retire at least 5 years before men, they are not able to set aside a portion of their paycheck into their pension savings accounts. Therefore, women are disadvantaged- they have less opportunity to contribute to their own savings accounts, but have the greatest need to be benefitted by it.
    • The system also singles out the self-employed. The self-employed cannot afford to pay into the system because they are never guaranteed a pay check. If they don’t make money for a few months, they simply can’t afford to set aside 10% of their wages each month.

  228. Speaking of Sheriff Joe, I got his email today.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Dear Friend,
    If you contribute to just one Member of Congress this year, I hope it will be Paul Gosar.
    When Paul was an underdog candidate in 2010, I was one of the first to endorse him. I supported Paul because I thought he had what it took to defeat a liberal incumbent Congresswoman — and I was right!
    Dr. Gosar’s campaign against liberal Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick was always against the odds. He was a small-town dentist with no political experience… she was a powerful Congresswoman with the full support of the Liberal Establishment.
    Kirkpatrick had every advantage – including big contributions from the most notorious liberal special interest groups.
    Kirkpatrick’s campaign finance reports are filled with big contributions from Big Labor – the same people who boycotted Arizona over SB 1070 – as well as left-wing environmental groups, abortion advocates, and Democrat Congressional leaders like Nancy Pelosi and Anthony Weiner.
    Against the odds, Paul won an upset victory… and he’s been a great Congressman. He’s a conservative who believes in lower taxes, smaller government, and the principles of the Constitution. And he’s not afraid to stand up for the rule of law and a secure border.
    As a Congressman, Paul Gosar has been a strong ally and outspoken defender of Arizona’s SB 1070. Paul stands with Arizona in our battle against the federal government… and he stands with law enforcement in the fight against the organized crime cartels, human smuggling rings, and drug kingpins who are waging war on our nation’s Southern Border.
    If you believe in a secure border and the rule of law, you have no better friend in Congress than Paul Gosar.
    That’s why national Democrats have targeted him for defeat next year. They have convinced Ann Kirkpatrick – the liberal Congresswoman who Paul defeated last year – to seek a rematch, and they are already pouring money into his rural district.
    In Congress, Kirkpatrick was a top ally of Speaker Pelosi, providing critical votes to pass out-of-control stimulus bills and government-run healthcare. She is a liberal’s liberal, siding with the federal government over Arizona and her own constituents. She also has a terrible record on border security. As a Legislator, Ann Kirkpatrick:
    Voted against prohibiting illegal immigrants from receiving state aid
    Voted against making it a Class IV Felony to smuggle an illegal immigrant into Arizona
    Voted against denying bail to illegal immigrants charged with felony offenses
    Voted against creating a border security fund for a radar system with cameras
    Voted against allowing the National Guard to defend our borders in a state of emergency
    The stakes in this battle are as high as they could possibly be. Our country is at a crossroads, and we need every patriot to join the fight. If you believe in freedom and the rule of law, I need you to join me in supporting Congressman Paul Gosar today.
    I know Paul, and I can tell you that this is a man who is not afraid to do battle. As a Freshman Congressman he has led the fight for a secure border, and he has stood shoulder to shoulder with the men and women who put their lives on the line everyday in the fight against crime.
    I have no doubt that Paul Gosar will remain a leader in this fight… but first we have to get him re-elected.
    Paul represents Arizona’s classic swing district. In the last twenty years, Northeast Arizona has had six different members of Congress… three Republicans and three Democrats. In 2008, liberal Ann Kirkpatrick beat her conservative opponent by 25,000 votes. In 2010, Dr. Gosar beat Kirkpatrick by 12,000 votes. Next year’s rematch could go either way…
    This contest will be one of the closest races in the country: National Democrats have already made Paul one of their top ten targets nationwide. With money flooding in from Democrats around the country, I need you to help me level the playing field.
    I’ve promised Paul that I’ll do everything I can to help him defend his seat. I’ll speak out on his behalf, I’ll defend him against liberal attacks, and I’ll campaign for him in his district…
    But right now what he really needs is support from patriots like you.
    Will you join me in standing with Paul by contributing the maximum you can to his campaign today? Individuals may contribute up to $5,000, couples $10,000. But whatever you can give – whether the maximum or just $20 or $30 – will make a tremendous difference.
    The Nancy Pelosi-Anthony Weiner-Open Borders crowd has demonstrated they’ll do everything they can to defeat Paul Gosar next year. Will you stand with me to fight back and defend him?
    Sincerely,
    Sheriff Joe Arpaio
    Maricopa County
  234. mitt is getting almost no applause. His campaign is dying on that stage.
  235. bachmann is not doing well at all, it is as if she is not hearing the questions or the great answers by Newt and Perry
Individual accounts need some work by Cain, but he looks confident. Romney looks confident and presidential. Sorry, FS. Huntsman is giving slick non-answers, smiling at everyone. Santorum is doing well too.
Newt is the think on your feet kind of guy and once again works for a certain unity. Bachman is consistent but leaves one wondering of her strength to convince those she’ll lead of her ideas. Cain is understated in his common sense. He would be good in some powerful position – VP if allowed to contribute fully. Paul is another one who probably wouldn’t communicate his power well to those he’d have to influence to get his slash and burn ideas actually moving.
  242. Excellent answer by Huntsman.
  245. Cain just Flip-Flopped on auditing the Fed. That will come back to haunt him since he is on record against auditing the Fed.
  246. Perry and Newt are the most confidant and consistently giving the strongest answers. mitt looks very nervous and afraid. No wonder the audience is clearly against him.
  247. Newt is doing great getting big applause from the audience.
  248. Audience is booing mitt again.
  249. I think Cain has always said to “fix” the Fed not abolish it …. whether auditing it alone would do that could just be another political ploy for not doing anything to it substantially in its very structure which is way too big.
  250. Perry is spending way too much time on the question re: cervical cancer. He should have just said it was a mistake and left it at that. They are now going after his obvious past lack of thorough thought and understanding of what should be some core convictions. Santorum has the best inner guidance via morality and the natural law without a doubt that he’d do anything less than his convictions.     PERRY HAD THE CLASS NOT TO VIOLATE THE 11TH COMMANDMENT AND CALL santorum OUT ABOUT HIS WIFE’S ABORTION!
  254. As I said, why is simply auditing the Fed some kind of great answer to the real fact that it is just too big, has too much power, and needs to be shrunk and “fixed” as Cain says. I doubt if just auditing is any solution for Mr. Cain.
    Anyway, everyone of these conservative candidates (with possibly the exception of Huntsman and Paul, for wholly other reason) is someone with capabilities to begin making immediately necessary changes if given a position with the help of a predominantly conservative congress. The Senate also needs to be changed.
  255. The format of the debate is GREAT, imho. Wolf Blitzer comes across as fair-minded, and I like the idea of giving more time evenly to all the candidates. The time i passing so quickly, because it is a very lively presentation, which seems to indicate that the candidates are engaged and enthused. It is also a plus to have questions from the audience.
  256. After bachmann and santorum’s cheap DISHONEST attacks on Gov Perry, I am not listening to a single word those 11th Commandment cheap shot creeps say. They are both toast anyway stuck in single digits going down slinging mud.
  257. “i” should be “is”. (too excited)
  258. observer | September 12, 2011 at 9:24 pm |
    Don’t get me wrong, I am impressed with Cain tonight but the fact is he Flip-flopped on auditing the Fed.
  259. Perry will probably get better in debates. He is doing okay for the nomination. I think Mitt is far more polished. Bachmann just had a big applause there on Obamacare. If Ron Paul thinks the churches will take over healthcare, the GOP will lose if they follow that plan. This will be a scary debate for many in America with that response.
  260. Great answer by Perry on securing the border.
  262. Great proposal by Cain, a regulatory reduction commission with businessmen who have been abused by bo’s agencies.
  263. ron paul is being booed for siding with muslim TERRORISTS>
  264. Great answer by Perry on Afghanistan!
    Except for the cheap shots by romney, bachmann and santorum. This has been a great debate.
  265. Ron Paul was a disaster on foreign policy on the last question. Huntsman wasn’t great; he’d feed the young women to the wolves. perry was great saying we would keep some people there to help. Santorum and Newt were great too.
  266. Newt and Perry won this debate. They gave the best answers by far. The BIGGEST LOSER was mitt, followed by bachmann and santorum.
    I was also impressed with Cain.
  267. PERRY HAD THE CLASS NOT TO VIOLATE THE 11TH COMMANDMENT AND CALL santorum OUT ABOUT HIS WIFE’S ABORTION!
    You are mistaken about the facts and that’s a cheap shot. Santorum’s faith which is based on the morality of the natural law which is to attempt to save the lives of both mother and child. His wife developed an infection with high fever and the labor was sped up (not induced with the intention to end a life) with the intention of hopefully both lives continuing. It was not a deliberate act to intentionally kill the child which is what abortion is. And that is what his faith and what he has always stated and what the prolife movement permits. Both persons with the help of current medical science are attempted to be given as much chance as possible to live. There was no deliberate intention to kill one over the other. You sound like the obfuscating intentions of the pro-abortion apologists who leave out the core reality of the actual facts.
    And that’s just disingenuous!
  268. Huntsman should lose many women votes based on his response to not help women in Afghanistan. Thank goodness he is nowhere man in the polls.
  269. Great answer by Cain. He would bring a sense of humor to the White House.
    Fantastic Debate!
  270. observer,
    The fact is that santorum alleges that he is pro-Life yet his wife had an ABORTION.
  271. Wolfy tried to promote the lib talking points but he was allowed to succeed about as much as his “success” on jeopardy! Thank goodness conservative public was allowed to get their questions in so that fundamental discussion could take place.
  272. My final conclusions are that Romney and Bachmann were strong. Perry finished strong, but was nervous at many points. I am sure he will continue to improve. Cain, Newt, and Santorum were confident and very good too. huntsman was okay in some places, but got killed on the immigration issue as did Perry. Paul and Huntsman were terrible on foreign policy.
  273. observer,
    I am not the one being disingenuous and inconsistent and hypocritical and trying to rationalize abortions. That’s santorum.
    The fact is that santorum alleges that he is pro-Life yet his wife had an ABORTION.
  274. observer | September 12, 2011 at 9:56 pm |
    For a lib, I thought Wolf was fair, cetainly a lot better than brian williams and that politico creep.
  275. Free Speech you are perpetuating a lie. Get the facts and the morality of the actions taken straight. There was no abortion. The same moral actions are taken when there is an ectopic pregnancy. There is the attempt to save both lives and that is morally permitted not deliberate action taken to intentionally kill one of the individuals which is what an abortion is. If you have a different morality not based on that natural law then that is your difference but says nothing about the moral action taken in this particular case.
  276. No matter how many times Rep. Paul debates, he always manages to spout the erroneous belief that the Islamic terrorists attack us because it is our fault for meddling in their countries. Sen. Santorium comes a little closer, but he is wrong, also, by stating that the terrorists don’t like the U.S. success and freedom. Both assumptions are wrong.
    The Islamic terrorists attack freedom-loving countries because they BELIEVE – they have been taught to BELIEVE – that their god, Allah, demands that Islam conquer the world and in so doing, either kill the infidels or force them into servitude. It is their stinkin’ thinkin’ that governs their actions.
    They hate Israel and they hate America. They have infiltrated Europe with the goal of CONQUEST eventually, and they are doing a good job of it. They’ve been attempting this in one way or another down through many centuries.
  277. Tina,
    What were you smoking. mitt died on that stage. he was uptight, hesitant, fearful and evasive and under-handed and he was booed almost everytime he spoke. Clearly mitt was the BIGGEST LOSER of the debate.
  278. Very, very true, Cabby.
  279. If Wolf was so fair then he would not have hammered his limited slanted for a purpose questioning when he didn’t get the cheap response desired. As Krauthammer stated that Obama is being realized to be a mere mortal who is in a position way over his head, Wolf was tonight amongst those who also were of a caliber over Wolfy’s usual acquaintance. To make something positive by comparing it to another negative doesn’t make it that much better!!!
  280. All in all, I thought this was a great debate! It seemed that the candidates had more liberty and felt free to express themselves unstintingly. Romney seemed quite a bit more animated at times – even a bit nervous. Perry remains cool and collected. I like Cain very much but his exposure has been limited up to now. Perry has a nice presence among the group. He appears unfeigned and comfortable in his own skin.
  281. Sorry, FS. Romney had many more good answers on his plans, on immigration, on almost everything. In fact, he had more facts this debate than others. Perry was very good too, but he has to be a bit better to debate Obama. Perry is a better speaker off the cuff than he is in debates, IMHO.
  282. observer | September 12, 2011 at 10:08 pm |
    Don’t care to debate you about wolf’s performance either, but evidently you agree he was more fair than brian williams and the politico creep?
  283. Tina | September 12, 2011 at 10:13 pm |
    Fair enough. I still don’t see what you saw in romney. Imho he was nervous, fearful, evasive and dishonest and there is no question that he was booed repeatedly by the audience and when he did get polite applause, it was very weak.
  284. Dang , I missed the whole thing. Thanks all for the observations.
    I agree.
  286. The muslims want to wipe out infidels who won’t submit, yes, but they have a more important matter before that. Which is Israel, and it’s backer, the US.
    The bible and the koran cannot both be right. They contradict one another. And as long as the jews have the land, it is a spotlight on the fact that Isaac was the favored son. The muslims think that ishmael was the favored son, and so they absolutely cannot countenance the jews having that land. It screams at them that the bible is right and the koran is a lie. And so the true believing muslims cannot accept it. No peace agreement or land deal will suffice to them. They need the jews gone and they will not stop agitating for the destruction of Israel.
    observer,
    I suggest you read the truth about santorum. I am tired of debating you about the hypocrit santorum, his campaign is DOA.
    *********************
    Once again, you are outing yourself, Free Speech, by posting links from liberal sites criticizing Santorum. The procedure done was to save the life of the mother, and THAT is considered morally and right by nearly all, if not all, pro-lifers. You don’t speak from adequate knowledge; furthermore, there is no need for you to be so abusive about it.
  290. Bottom line, I am prepared to vote for anyone in that debate for POTUS, but Huntsman and Paul. I expect Perry and Romney to remain the front runners, but still feel Bachmann was good. I also feel Cain may move up a bit in the polls. he better explained his 999 plan, and I loved his answer on health care about Association plans.
  291. Cabby,
    Regardless of the source of the sites, the fact is that santorum’s wife had an abortion and santorum is a hypocrite.
    I agree. However, I thought that Newt and Perry were the best with Cain as a close third. Cain had some great moments.
  293. Free Speech, I didn’t mean to be so strident in my last post. I do agree with you on a number of things, but the abortion issue needed to be clarified.
  294. Newt is always good, FS, I agree. I don’t know if he can win, but he is very sharp, and I agree with him on everything he says. I also think you should understand women will want Bachmann to do well. If men keep knocking her down without a good reason, calling her crazy, etc., women could get as angry at the GOP as we got at the sexist Dems.
    Ditto!!
  296. Newt is really a very brilliant man, but I don’t think he could beat Bummer. It i too bad that he has developed quite a lot of baggage over the years.
    No problem. I am enjoying having a more civil debate with you and I can’t complain about other people being strident, now can I?
  298. They are repeating the debate tonight on CNN if you missed it at 11pm.
    Tina,
    Bachmann was my favorite until she started taking cheap shots at Perry and I heard about how poorly she was thought of by her own staff members.
    I agree but he would make a great Secretary of State.
  301. Tina,
    Please understand that I don’t have a sexist view of world. I grew up in a household of women. I have 3 sisters. Once again I live in a household with women. I have a Daughter and a Wife that I regard highly. I would lose to see a Woman President. I would support Sarah Palin as POTUS or VP, but I will NOT vote for Bachmann.
  302. I understand, FS. No worries.
    Thanks for the kind words, FS. I’ve enjoyed tonight’s discussion, too.
    I agree about Gingrich making a good Secretary of State. How about Ron Paul for Secretary of the Treasury? Palin for Secretary of Energy? Just random thoughts. I suppose it is too early for speculation. I would love to see as VP someone with military experience like Allen West. We can dream.
    I agree but ron paul just needs to retire. None will select him for a cabinet position. My instinct is that Perry will pick a woman VP.
  305. I missed the live debate. Wolf seems to be doing a decent job getting the candidates to be candid
  306. Here’s quite a different view of the debate via the comments from business owners and investors:
  307. This Will Tick You Off
    If this doesn’t tick you off nothing will
    Al Ash
    Yesterday during the 9/11 ceremonies in New York the director of the C-SPAN telecast took a shot of Obama and his wife while the World Trade Center American flag that survived the attack was being folded by local police and fire fighters. Watch the video until the folding of the flag is almost finished. At that point read Michelle’s big lips as she leans over to Obama and says “ALL THIS FOR A FLAG” and then shakes her head side to side in disapproval while Obama nods his approval of her statement. These people have absolutely no respect for our country and are a total disgrace.
    This is what happens when people elect a man they knew nothing about. We must correct this mistake in November 2012.
    Romney vs Perry
    David Gergen, CNN senior political analyst: “There’s no question that Romney and Perry will remain the frontrunners Romney has a better command of the facts. He’s a more practiced debater. He gave one of the best answers of his entire campaign when he was asked how he would balance the budget. But Perry has the command presence, and even though people took shots at him as you said, he deflected reasonably well, he came in as a better debater, he was more even this time.
    “He talks a lot of Texas. He’s going to need to move beyond Texas. He’s clearly going to have to beef himself up on the international side. I would have to tell you, Rick Perry walked in here as a frontrunner tonight. And I imagine he walked out as the frontrunner.
    Erick Erickson, CNN contributor and RedState.com blogger: “I think this may be the first debate where Mitt Romney didn’t come out the clear winner. Perry needed to do well. I think he did well. I don’t think the Social Security exchange helps Mitt Romney at all at a Republican primary. He’s foolish to continue. I think the majority of Republican voters agree with Perry. For the life of me, I can’t understand why Romney would go with this. [Michele] Bachman was going to make this a key point and backed down from this.”
